I love credit cards so much!

We spent 5 days at DLR/DCA last Spring Break and could have stayed longer. Still felt I didn't see everything and wanted to ride Radiator Springs Racers more!
FYI there's an Alamo rental car office in Downtown Disney. We found a great price thru Costco.
I'm sure we could do more than 3 days at DLR, but I can only take a week off work and we want time for San Diego too. With our friends living there now, I'm sure this won't be our last trip to So Cal.
Thanks for the tip on the rental car from Downtown Disney. I don't have a Costco membership but I'll look into that location.

We will just miss you guys at DLR! We'll be there June 29-July 2 and then we head down to San Diego to finish our vacation down there :) We are driving from Denver. I'm forgetting which it was but IIRC, your family was either at WDW right before or right after this past Aug/Sept.
Yes, I remember we were at WDW around the same time too! We were there 8/27-9/3 last year. :)

One path to consider is spending Avios on Aer Lingus - There's a good primer on this here https://milecards.com/1588434411/ho...lights-with-avios-and-save-big-on-surcharges/

You'd want to check out the Avios off peak calendar to plan your travel accordingly.

The nice thing about Avios is that it accepts transfers from UR, AMEX MR, and SPG. There's also a BA card that sometimes has great sign-up bonuses. I got a 100,000 Avios bonus years ago; last year around April there was a 100,000 bonus offer, looks like it's at 75,000 now which is better than its usual 50,000.

ETA: United has low fees but one way costs 30K in Saver fares so the trade-off might be parting with more points/miles.

You don't want to use BA Avios to fly AA to London. You will still incur huge taxes and fees. Flying on AA metal using AA miles would be my suggestion. There are other ways though. Here is a pretty good post on options that also list the taxes and fees. https://upgradedpoints.com/best-ways-to-fly-to-london-with-points
Thank you both for these links! Very helpful. I will have to play around with it and see what the cash prices are for summer on the different airlines. Unfortunately we have to travel in July & August because of the kids' school schedule, which is probably all peak pricing for award flights. And we'd need a lot of miles for 4 round-trip tickets, even in regular economy. It may make more sense to just pay for the flights with UR points through the CSR.

Don't forget parking in your budget if you get a car at lax. Some hotels charge, some don't, up to $20/night.
Yes, I noticed that. I'm leaning towards the Hotel Indigo on W. Katella, which has free parking, but I'm waiting to book until I get the rest of the points I need from the IHG Accelerate bonus this quarter. Hopefully they don't sell out of reward nights before then.

I’ve been following this board for a few months and think I am ready to dip my toes into the water…I must admit I still get headaches and my eyes may glaze over a bit when too many CSP, CSR, CIP, RIP (lol) acronyms are bandied about.

A bit of history… I am 54 and would travel the world if both my finances and my hubby were in agreement. MY dh is 61 and isn’t so inclined. He has some health issues and is looking at open heart surgery sometime ??? this year. We have a WDW trip for 10 days scheduled for March and that will be the extent of travel for this year, except maybe a trip to Alaska to visit my parents around the end of the year, health willing. If my Disney Jonesing gets too bad we MIGHT do a short trip to DLR sometime early 2019, but my dh proclaims he HATES DLR, even though it was 1993 when we were last there!

My goals: Travel is mostly on the west coast; Alaska, L.A., Vegas, B.C., and when we have an AP to WDW we try to squeeze in 3-4 trips to Florida. We fly Alaska Airlines because it works the best for us. As long as they keep the direct PDX-MCO flight we have little interest in SW Air. We will be getting an AP again sometime after Star Wars Land opens. I would like to maximize my AK Air miles for that travel and have the ability to book WDW hotels with points.

Credit: I believe I am at 1/5 as of 1/4/18. TU 834 EQ 832 (Dipped in 12/17 to high 700’s due to credit utilization)

Disc IT 11.5k Joint no fee 02.09.94

US Bank Flex Points 20k Joint no fee 08.01.11

CITI Costco 20k Ind no fee 08.25.13

AMEX Blue Pref 20k Ind no fee 01.04.16

Disney Visa 15k Ind no fee 10/13/17

Additional info: My monthly spend is not large and I don’t want to MS. Three thousand in three months is a number I can usually attain. There will be times that number can increase; when my husband has his surgery as we have a large deductible to meet (time unknown as of now), in October insurance is due, and this March we are going to DW. I usually pay for this with Disney Gift cards bought at a discount (currently @ BJ’s with my 5% Discover, or AMEX at grocery store for 6%) but can certainly use a new CC to pay for some of it.

Cards with a large AF but with travel credits are not of great interest to me right now due to the uncertainty of our travel abilities this year, but could be of more value once we are ready to get our AP in late 2019 or early 2020.

I can probably qualify for a Business card on a Rental Property Income of around $6k annually.

This is mostly an individual endeavor. I have not spoken to my DH about it, because he would most likely freak out. I can probably get a card or two in his name, but I will be responsible for the spend. I just sent him out SPECIFICALLY to put a small spend on our US Bank Visa just to keep activity on it and he managed to use the WRONG card! LOL! During the Economic Crash we had a few cards closed by the issuers due to lack of use.

Thanks in advance for the help. You all are so friendly and helpful here!

wow, you need a new alaska card. take one out in your husbands name so you can leave your record free to get all those other cards. those alaska boa cards can be churned every year or everyother for the 30000 points. i've actually had 2 within 6 months without cancelling any. the app to apply when booking airfare was too tempting and even thou it did not go through while booking for the extra $100 off. it did go through within the month. don't think it has $100 off anymore but they are running the bogo free.

Thanks! I think I will refer my dh for now on the AK Airlines. Although I remember the FA'S were talking about sign up bonuses the last flight we were on but can't remember the particulars to know which would be a better bonus. I better wait till our flight in March to find out.

Do you have enough points to book part of the stay? I did that for our 3 nights in Paris. Booked Fri & Sat with my 2 free nights and then when I had the points for the 3rd night a month and a half later I called to add Thurs to the rez. Different hotel chain but it might be worth a shot.

it was 31000 last flight we were on in november, extra 1000. don't remember if it offered the bogo, which is much better than the companion pass.

Well you're starting in a great place - you are at 1/24 for Chase's purposes (I see you say 1/5 above but it's expressed as 1/24 meaning 1 card in the last 24 months).

One of the topics we've discussed a lot around here recently is using Chase Ultimate Rewards (URs) to book hotels and packages at Disney World. URs are easy to earn for beginners, but much harder for those who have applied for a lot of cards recently due to that pesky 5/24 rule mentioned earlier. URs are amazing because when you have a Chase Sapphire Reserve (CSR) they are worth 1.5 cents per point towards travel such as hotels and airline tickets. Additionally, URs can be transferred to partners too if that makes sense for you. Just yesterday I had a post that detailed all the cards that you can use to earn URs so I'll paste an excerpt here:

85k = Chase Ink Preferred (CIP) => 80k bonus + 5k min spend (business card)
54k = Chase Sapphire Reserve (CSR) => 50k bonus + 4k min spend + $300 Travel Credit which can be hit twice in the first year
59k = Chase Sapphire Preferred (CSP) => 50k bonus + 4k min spend + 5k AU
33k = Chase Ink Cash (CIC) => 30k bonus + 3k min spend (business card)
18k = Chase Freedom (CF) => 15k bonus + 2.5k AU + 500 min spend
18k+ = Chase Freedom Unlimited (CFU) => 15k bonus + 2.5k AU + 750 min spend (1.5x URs)

Many of these cards also don't charge the Annual Fee for the first year so that's a great benefit! Now I'm not specifically recommending you go right out and hit all of those cards. BUT if you did you'd earn over 267,000 URs which would be worth over $4,000 in hotels at Disney, Flights OR could be transferred to a program like Singapore Airlines which I believe can be used to book on Alaska Airlines (I am SO not an expert on this one so please check me on that).

The reason you'd want to consider Chase first is once you're over 5/24 (5 cards in 24 months) the cards I list above will not be available to you again (unless you wait to be under 5/24 again which sometimes doesn't make sense). Once you move past Chase there are numerous options including BofA Alaska Airlines cards, Barclay Arrival+ and other cards that offer flexible travel points, Hotel specific cards and of course the AMEX Membership Rewards (MRs). MRs can be earned on over a dozen cards and also have some nice travel partners and redemption options.

I know this doesn't exactly give you a road map but my advice would be to do some reading and ask some more specific questions as you narrow things down. Remember that you're in a great starting spot and with a good plan you can achieve A LOT of free and deeply discounted travel.

Also - when you're ready to apply please consider supporting other DISers by using links on our DISchurners group on Reddit where it makes sense.
Thanks @SouthFayetteFan . I will absolutely use a Dischurners referral when I start applying.

It looks like I need a CSR before I can get a CSP. Trying to figure out what constitutes travel expenses. Ride share, parking at airport?, airline fees. With my March flight booked and paid for not sure I can take full advantage of the credit this year. Does Disney room charges count, or will it code as something else?

Neither of us have TSA Pre but it looks like that may be an additional perk above the $300 credit???

If I were to get the CSR now I would be able to meet the 4k spend with our organic spend plus some Disney trip expenses. I think after that I would like the CFU for the 1.5% everyday. I would apply for the CIP when my dh is scheduled for surgery, won't have any problem meeting that spend with our medical deductible! That will put me at 4/24. Does it matter if I apply for a business card before I get all my personal cards? I know most all this has been discussed here, but with all that is going on in our lives right now my mind is total mush. Sorry to be a pain!

Yeah, the Companion Pass is pretty useless for us. I can usually find a sale fare for the same cost, maybe $10-20 more, if that.

Chase has a new rule that a person can only hold one of the Sapphire cards at a time. In order to get around this you need to get them both at once. So, apply for the CSR and if you’re auto approved immediately apply for the CSP. If you aren’t instantly approved for the CSR, call right away and find out what info they need, then after approval immediately apply for the CSP and repeat with another phone call if that one isn’t instantly approved. It’s a lot to spend at once, but it’s currently the only way to his both cards if you didn’t already have them prior to the new rule.

Chase’s definition of travel is very generous. I believe everything you’ve listed will count toward the travel credit, including anything you charge to your WDW room. When you check out, everything is combined and counted as a hotel charge. Pretty sweet!

You do not need to get a CSR before a CSP but due to new Chase rules, you cannot get both unless you apply for them both at the same time (using different browsers). However, if you do that, you would have 8k spend to meet in 3 mos which can be really hard to make. Parking at the airport would code as travel. I'm not familiar with ride share, unless you mean Uber or Lyft and those also code as travel. Any Disney expenses charged to your resort room and paid for there will also code as travel. So, any of those expenses would trigger the $300 travel credit on the CSR.

The TSA precheck is an additional benefit beyond the $300 travel credit and available on the CSR.

The Chase business cards require you to be under 5/24 but do not count against your 5/24 so your plan to mix the CIP in between your other cards is fine as long as you are still under 5/24. The spend on the CIP is 5k so definitely makes sense to apply for that one when you have some big expenses.

YOU ARE NOT A PAIN :D you are amongst DIS family here and this is what we do!!! @peel already has you covered on CSR/CSP, just want to add if you do that make sure you do it when their Recon and security lines are open- so during the week. Seen way too many people stuck because they did it on a Sun afternoon and couldn't talk to the department they needed until Mon!

Lots of things make travel on the CSR! Yes ride shares, rental cars too, airline charges, idk airport parking but absolutely yes on Disney resort charges! TSA pre is in addition to the $300. You get one TSA pre or Global Entry reimbursement every 5 years.

I wouldn't put the biz card off until last because if Chase has decided they extended too much personal credit they will deny you a biz card and they will not reallocate from personal credit lines to a business one. People try to avoid that by dropping personal CLs but sometimes they just results in severely lowered CLs and still no biz card when they apply. And once you drop a CL with Chase you cannot get it back.

JINX! Thanks guys.

Well that means I would need to wait for those until the surgery is scheduled. Between the medical expenses, organic spend and whatever else misc. I should be able to meet the 8k. Or else I could wait till fall when insurance premiums are due. That is close to 4k in itself. Ugh.

Okay, so plan B....CIP first??? Would rather have the no fee CIC but definitely the Preferred has a better bonus. Not really sure about more than one business card, so would probably only do CIP or CIC. I don't really have a legitimate business, just one rental property and MINOR Internet Sales. (FB, CL) . If I were to get that now I could use WDW charges to help meet the larger spend.

Second card CFU unless surgery comes up. ???

The smoke is coming out of my brains now... need a glass of wine!

You're welcome! Glad you're consulting with our awesome group here!

So everybody that responded thus far has covered the CSR/CSP double dip concept...your problem there might be hitting $8k spend in 3 months. Before you dismiss that I'd really consider if you can make it work.

If you have some extra cash you could prepay bills/utilities (cable, cell, water, electric, gas, insurance, etc). You could also buy gift cards to places you'll shop at in the future (gas/groceries?).

Now if you absolutely can't make $8k spend work you'll need to select one or the other. This isn't necessarily an easy decision...CSR has the $450 fee vs CSP which is waived in yr1 and $95 thereafter. CSR has the travel credit and TSA credit where CSP has nothing. CSPs bonus is actually better with the 5k for adding an AU. CSRs travel redemptions are 1.5x vs 1.25x on CSP. Both transfer to partners at 1:1 though...again all of this assumes you decide you can only get 1 of the 2 (and remember once you get one you can't get the other for 24 months unless you do the double dip). I think in most instances the math favors the CSR (especially if you can use the travel credit) BUT in the right circumstances CSP could be better (especially if you are going to transfer to partners where the points are worth the same amount).

Once you make a decision on whether you can go for both or not perhaps you may want to circle back for some additional advice! Good luck - you're in good hands here ;) - and you absolutely ARE NOT a pain! Without people asking questions around here how would I pass my day at work...lol!

I'm a big advocate of CIP first and then a CSP/CSR double dip if you can swing it.
When all is said and done there you'll have almost $3k worth of points toward travel (and in an emergency situation you could just cash out for $2k which is nice to have as a fallback!).

The CIP spend of $5k is only $1k more than CSP or CSR and like I said in an earlier post there are some ways to prepay some things to hit that without spending money that you wouldn't have spent anyways.

The CIP is an excellent first choice! Your rental income and internet sales both count as legit businesses so no worries there. Just choose one and go with it (maybe the one you've been at the longest). I have a CIP and chose it for the signup bonus. I plan to product change it to a CIC after a year because I prefer the earning categories.

I know you didn’t want to do Manufacture Spend, but it is super easy if you open certain bank accounts to meet the spend. I met the CIP spend by opening two PNC bank accounts, a checking and a savings. I set my cash advance limit to $100 and then opened the account online and funded with the CIP. The funds posted and I transferred it back to my main account and then paid the bill.

Also, for my “Business” I said I had $5 in revenue. You definitely have more than me, so I would try for the CIP and the CIC down the line.

The Chase 5/24 rule applies to ALL new credit card accounts (from all issuers) appearing on your personal credit report at the time of application.

Unfortunately in your initial comment you said 3/24 with Chase and I think we all probably thought that meant you were 3/24 and understand how it worked. The "With Chase" part should've caught our attention that maybe you didn't quite understand. Sorry for your denial, wish we could've provided better advice.

Do you know the dates the new AMEX accounts were opened in 2016 (as listed on your credit report)? I ask this question because without knowing this info, any advice we give would be based on assumptions...

Yes, my mistake on the all cards vs. Chase cards. Now its time to re-evaluate and come up with a new plan. I'm going to sit down and figure out the dates of all my cards (and DH's while I'm at it) and create a spreadsheet to keep track of it all. Two of the AmEx's will fall off this year, I just need to figure out when.

Luckily we have quite the stash of various points right now so we've got our upcoming travel covered. It just pains me to not we meeting a minimum spend now. Thank you all for your help!

Perhaps consider an AMEX biz card to pass your time until one falls off :) There's been a lot of excitement lately around the SPG Biz and another card many seem to have picked up is the Business Gold Rewards (which earns AMEX MRs).
