Controversial topics board....did I do something wrong?

Since creating this board to allow for political and religious discussions, I’ve reduced related infractions by nearly 99%. I’d much rather provide members a place to discuss these topics with restrictions. In the past, we had a similar setup called the Debate Board, which was open to everyone and quickly became chaotic. I didn’t want to use that name again or make it visible to everyone. While this board isn’t for everyone, I feel it has helped keep these topics more contained, both for the community as a whole and to reduce reports, infractions, and bannings as much as possible.

Corey, may I ask a question? I have chosen not to go onto that board, but often when browsing the main boards list the thread with the latest post for Community Board is from that section. I am surprised to see certain topics, but then, right, they are in the sub-forum. Is that something that could be addressed? It's not a big deal, but considering some of the provocative thread titles over there it might be worth looking at.

Absolutely! I thought those were hidden too. I’ll fix it.

Meh. I'm just happy that the people that want to regurgitate the same talking points have their own space to talk amongst themselves.
Anything I'm not interested in I just scroll past. No need for a special place. And to be honest,

Not sure when the Debate Board went away, I started lurking in 2002 when I booked my Disney Cruise and joined in 2003 and kind of stayed on that forum for many years but never went there. Trust me I know how much work moderation can be, that was part of my job beginning in 1995 until I retired in 2021. It can be chaotic, but generally speaking, chaotic adds up to success.

Chaos also leads to frequent ‘hand slapping’ and the forum being seen as ‘heavy-handed,’ which is something I’ve been working to fix over the past year. I still have work to do, but I welcome feedback. Email is best.

After reading through a few of the threads I'm like wow. Cancelling your family members over their politics? Yikes It's worse, darker and more hateful then I imagined. Maybe once the election is over it will calm down... or it will get worse. I'm not sure it's my cup of tea, but it's given me some insight to some of the posters on here. It's actually pretty disturbing.
This isn’t the place to hash this out

I am not a member because I don't think discussions should be limited to just one board because someone thinks they are controversial.
No no, it definitely should be separated. Forums can turn into hellish places when allowed to browse with common areas. Religion & Politics are always a killer of fun. ;)

I think it is needed badly, and couldn't agree more to keep it hidden, & the need for asking to participate.

I find snap judgements aren’t always accurate. Anyone who’s interested should check it out for themselves. If it’s not for you, you don’t have to participate. You can even ask to opt back out. As with everything else, just because something isn’t for you, it’s not your right to disparage others that like it.
