Hurricane Gustav (forcast models in first post) Be safe those in the path!

That reminds me I need to go by gas. I have a feeling that gas prices are about to shoot up.

Leave if you need to leave. There is nothing in your house more valuable than your life. Do not get lulled into a false sense of security if a direct hit is not made, people who are on the Eastern side of the hurricane will be in a lot of danger as well.

Please do not think anything man made, levees, bridges, your home, can with stand the amount of damage a force of nature can bring.

My heart just sank when I saw the news this evening. We've already seen the gas price go up anywhere from 5-10 cents in the last 24 hours and I'm sure it will go up even more as the storm gets closer up the gulf. I'm sending out lots of prayers to all that is in the path. Please, Please be safe and leave if you can.
God Bless you all during this time.

Believe it or not, we have been feeling the effects of Gustav's rain bands in the Daytona/Orlando area, and rip currents/heavy seas from Hanna too - WFTV local weather shows:

Central Florida
Gustav is spreading heavy rain over our area today. We will expect rain from him the rest of this weekend, meanwhile, Hanna will cause rougher surf and rip currents along our east coast
.

It always surprises me how large these systems are! Stay safe everyone, and keep watching in case the tracks change :)

it will be me, the kids, and the dogs... DH works for dotd, and he got the call, he is packing his stuff now, and leaving at 10pm. :sad1:

My family and I are staying. As far as I know there has never been a mandatory evacuation of our AREA EVER. Most of the people from Livingston on here are from what we call Upper Livingston parish and we are far from the Amite River. Lower Livingston floods when someone tinkles in their back yard and sometimes if rain lasts for days they will evacuate the lower area. If we lived in a mobile home I for sure would be moving to a more stable shelter, but not leaving the area.
I would imagine the reason for there never being an evacuation for our area, is we are no where near open water so there will be no issue with storm surge what so ever. Not that we dont ever have problems from wind damage, but by the time storms get to us usually the strength is knocked down a bit. We are at least an hour from Lake Ponchatrain and New Orleans , also prob 2 hours from Vermillion Bay area.
If there ever comes a day that we have a problem with storm surge or a hurricane is still Cat 4 by the time it hits us .. .God help us all!!!

Us too. In Palm Beach County, it is pouring rain, all associated with Gustav.

I am glad to see that most people are taking this storm seriously. What is scary is that Katrina hit N.O. as a strong Cat 3 (if I'm not mistaken) and look what happened. I hope everyone stays safe.

I was just watching the national news and all I can do is shake my head.

They interviewed one lady who's new house was less than 50 feet *YES 50 FEET* from a levee in the 9th ward. She is refusing to leave. She said her house was 10 feet off the ground and didn't think she would have any problems.

What these people don't realize is that in Katrina they were on the west side of the storm. This time they will most likely be on the east side of the storm. Which is the more dangerous side of the storm. They will get wind like they never got Katrina.

Ya'll keep us in your prayers. We are on the Mississippi Gulf Coast preparing to evacuate late tonight or early tommorow. There aren't any hotels availabe for 4 or 5 hrs in all directions so I don't know where we are going yet. There are still alot of people here who have not recovered from Katrina yet:sad1:

As I said in an earlier post, Alabama has opened up shelters in Birmingham and Huntsville. I know in the news report they said that there wasn't any hotels left in North Alabama, and that people were having to go into North GA and TN for rooms.

You all have been in my prayers and will continue to be there until this is over. Please be safe all of you and if you are in the path please try to leave. I cannot imagine going through this again :sad1:

:( stay safe and I hope you're able to find somewhere to stay.

We're staying put too (Baton Rouge).

Stay safe, everyone! This is almost too much to comprehend, even for someone who wasn't directly effected by Katrina. I just can't imagine what you all must be experiencing. My prayers and thoughts go to all of you.

Those of y'all leaving from LA, I would advise getting on 55 or 59 heading north extremely early in the morning. I-10 in MS is open both ways, but I don't know how long that will last. It has been so busy around here lately, we are getting contraflow plans set up and ready to go.

The NHC told us today that anywhere in the cone is just a likely to get a direct hit as where the line is indicating. So if you live in the cone, get out now!

If you have any questions about shelters, gas, how to get around in MS, please don't hesitate to ask. I work for the state DOT so I have much of the information that you will need handy.

I'm sure most of you won't make it as far as Georgia in your evacuations, but if you have any questions or need any advice for this area (south of Atlanta on I 85), please ask. If I don't know the answer, I'll find it for you.
