Hurricane Gustav (forcast models in first post) Be safe those in the path!

Could you head east and up?

Here in the Dallas area they mentioned getting ready for evacuees. We likely have plenty of places to stay still but they did mention that East Texas was pretty much full now.

Hey there...:)

I am in Ascension Parish. What do yall think about the models showing it going into Vermillion Bay? I know it is still too early to tell but I talked to my dad this morning (he is south of Houston towards Galveston) and he said not to come that way. I think I agree with that. I don't want to get stuck west bound on I-10 with a west bound hurricane!!:scared1: I see that some of yall in Livingston Parish are staying so far. At what point would you decide to leave? I know we will end up on the dirty side but I just cant tell how close it's gonna be. The only hotels left are WAY north of here (think Arkansas and northern Alabama). Kinda hard to make decisions without alot of facts, huh?:confused3 Thoughts? Ideas?

If you haven't got ressies in North Alabama then you are pretty much out of luck. As it's being reported here most of the hotels are booked solid. They have opened shelters in the Birmingham and Huntsville area for people from the gulf. I met several Red Cross caravans heading South on I-65 yesterday.

People might can try some of the state parks and see if there are any openings there. I know some of them were used as shelters after Katrina.

The weather channel is saying for people to look at the Atlanta area.

Others closer by will be able to help you more but on the weather channel it showed that I-10 was already pretty busy. They didnt know if it was people already leaving or it was football traffic.

Gustav now a very dangerous Cat 4 Hurricane

DATA FROM AN AIR FORCE RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT INDICATE THAT GUSTAV HAS CONTINUED TO STRENGTHEN AND NOW HAS MAXIMUM WINDS NEAR 145 MPH...230 KM/HR WITH HIGHER GUSTS. THIS MAKES GUSTAV AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS CATEGORY FOUR HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON HURRICANE SCALE.
A SPECIAL ADVISORY WILL BE ISSUED AT ABOUT 200 PM
EDT TO MODIFY THE INITIAL AND FORECAST INTENSITIES. THE SPECIAL
PUBLIC ADVISORY WILL TAKE THE PLACE OF THE INTERMEDIATE PUBLIC
ADVISORY PREVIOUSLY SCHEDULED FOR THAT TIME.

and with that I am tearing myself away from computer and football games on tv and going to go play some golf...mini golf..lol

Keep safe everyone.....

The hurricane hunter plane is now reporting wind gust of 165 mph in the North East section of Gustav.

That would put it 15 mph over Cat 5 strength.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

They said a few moments ago, that Havana will take a direct hit. Those poor poor people!

We're in Livingston parish and we're staying. My mom and SIL and her family are probably coming up here from Lafourche parish. The majority of our family in Lafourche parish are planning on staying even though they were given mandatory evacuation. My grandpa is always in and out of the hospital needing blood (he has leukemia), so he doesn't want to be far from his hospital and doctors. :( My grandparents made it up here for Katrina, but for this one they don't feel healthy enough. I tried to explain that we have hospitals here, too, but my grandpa really doesn't want to leave his doctors/nurses that he is used to.

I was watching the weath channel yesterday and they showed the track that hurricane hunters had to take to get to Gustav. That because of no flyovers over Cuba and Jamica it looked like they had to do a lot zig zagging around.

So what happens if you refuse a mandatory evactuation order?

Police, ambulance, firemen, etc won't help you out. You're basically on your own. No shelters will be open in the parish. My mom said that walmart, walgreens, etc were all closing today around 2 or 3pm due to the mandatory evacuation order.

Hi, we live in Thibodaux. My brother lives in BR and we're going there tonight.
Not far from the projected landfall but at least not on the bayou.
However, my sons-24 and 32 refuse to leave town. We have the generator set up because they want to stay at our house. I'll be on pins and needles until the storm has past.

Ok...I have a hotel room!!! The closest I could find a hotel was Dallas. She said that Dallas was booking up pretty fast with "Gustav People". We are planning on staying and riding it out for now but I hated not having a plan B. We have food, water, generator, plywood etc. So we are prepared to stay but if this thing gets bigger and looks like it wants to drift more towards me, I am SOOOOO happy to have a place to run to (or crawl slowly up the interstate to).:scared:

Good luck to all of you. I hope you and your families stay safe and please make good decisions.

To everyone is its path, stay safe.  I hope the hurricane weakens before it makes landfall. :guilty:

My family and I are staying. As far as I know there has never been a mandatory evacuation of our AREA EVER. Most of the people from Livingston on here are from what we call Upper Livingston parish and we are far from the Amite River. Lower Livingston floods when someone tinkles in their back yard and sometimes if rain lasts for days they will evacuate the lower area. If we lived in a mobile home I for sure would be moving to a more stable shelter, but not leaving the area.
I would imagine the reason for there never being an evacuation for our area, is we are no where near open water so there will be no issue with storm surge what so ever. Not that we dont ever have problems from wind damage, but by the time storms get to us usually the strength is knocked down a bit. We are at least an hour from Lake Ponchatrain and New Orleans , also prob 2 hours from Vermillion Bay area.
If there ever comes a day that we have a problem with storm surge or a hurricane is still Cat 4 by the time it hits us .. .God help us all!!!

Praying for everyone to be safe and please evacuate if they say evacuate.

Thanks everyone for the prayers. If Gustav keeps on the projected path, we will really need them.
I'd like to add my prayers to everyone who will have effects from Gustav.
Everyone from Galveston to Mobile needs to keep paying attention because Gustav is getting very big and very powerful. He's getting to a size that enables him to plow through any high. He's also wobbled a bit and if the wobbles continue, the projected path is out the window.
No one should kick back and relax at this point. Prepare, don't panic!

crap

Cuba is going to be hit very very badly.

They said a few moments ago, that Havana will take a direct hit. Those poor poor people!

crap is right...too bad we can't use stronger words right now.

Sitting her up north I can't even imagine what you are going through. We get snow storms but I know that after the snow stops we can get out and life is back to normal, but dealing with this...I don't know how you all do it. I'd be a wreck right now because of all the uncertainty of where it's going to go. Thinking of everyone and hoping you all stay safe.
