Hurricane Gustav (forcast models in first post) Be safe those in the path!

Those of y'all leaving from LA, I would advise getting on 55 or 59 heading north extremely early in the morning. I-10 in MS is open both ways, but I don't know how long that will last. It has been so busy around here lately, we are getting contraflow plans set up and ready to go.

The NHC told us today that anywhere in the cone is just a likely to get a direct hit as where the line is indicating. So if you live in the cone, get out now!

If you have any questions about shelters, gas, how to get around in MS, please don't hesitate to ask. I work for the state DOT so I have much of the information that you will need handy.
I don't think there's much choice. From what we heard earlier they're prohibiting evacuation traffic on I-12 (which merges back with 10) and are evacuating through I-55 toward Jackson. I don't think they can even go toward coastal MS, at least not if they have to go through or near the Baton Rouge area.

From the models in the first post, it currently looks like 2pm Monday afternoon is the estimated time it will hit.

excellent info!
Thanks for posting that!

There are many many more than that, but I just posted a few. Also, if anyone has any questions about highway conditions, shelters, gas stations, you can call 866-521-MDOT (6368).

If someone is dead set on getting to I-10, they can go highway 90 around to the MS state line then get on I-10 in MS to head toward Mobile.

Skuttle- Hi..remember me? I went to high school with Ryan. Please stay safe!

My family is all in Thibodaux, and they are heading out at 1AM tonight, evacuating to our home in South Carolina.

Our prayers are with everyone in the path of this storm.

We heard Ray nagin on the radio tonight. I can't believe what I heard! First off...his primary mesage was get the h*// outta town. :teacher: Then he goes on to say that if you stay to make sure you have your ax with you...because you WILL need it to chop through your roof when the water rises! The mayor of New Orleans basically just told the world that the levees will fail again. Some of you New Orleans area folks help me out. I so could be wrong here, but wasn't it him who was saying that the levee repairs were going good?!?:scared:

Don't get me wrong...I agree with everything he said. (Now THAT should make the news! :lmao: ) I just can't believe he said it!

I heard a couple of months back that the levees would fail. Folks...please get out! Don't take the chance! It's looks like it's going to be big.

It is not the city of NO that is rebuilding the levees...enough said!!!

All I can say is WHY???....I hope all of you in this area remain safe, and you are in our thoughts!!

HMMMM... we have never left for a storm in my life. As i said before there has never been a reason, but I am really wondering now if we should get the heck out of dodge. Im getting a tad freaked out!

UGHHHHH

Speaking of getting the heck out of Dodge........we are loading up and getting out of here!!! I swear if my house is not here when I get back I am gonna be seriously p.o.ed!!!!!!! Yall be safe!!:thumbsup2

I'm just jumping in here to let y'all know... my daughter goes to LSU and left Baton Rouge today at 3:30 and is ALMOST home (just southeast of Houston) now, it is 12:55 now. The drive normally takes 4 1/2 hours, today it is taking just over 9 1/2 hours. She stayed on I-10 the whole way. It was pretty good going until she got to Beaumont. Between Houston and Beaumont was a nightmare.

Good luck to everyone and stay safe.

I dont know what to do.. Im really having a moment right now.
We live right outside of Baton Rouge, so storm surge isnt a issue, but they are predicting very very high winds here in the area, close to what Betsy was and for that storm, gusts went as high as 95mph. That really scares me.

My husband must stay, he works for Exxon plastics and will have to be at work , no excuses.
While I normally travel with my lil one alone, im just really worried about the trip taking much longer than normal and what if something happens?!
Im thinking I will head to Huntsville Al. Guess ill just pack for WDW too since we leave next Tuesday , Ill just go from Huntsville to WDW .

as i said before UGHHHHHHHH!!!

When you live in a bowl, its foolish to think that it will never flood again. I don't understand ANYONE who decides to stay & put other people (rescue) in danger because of it.

Transportation & days notices were given. No excuses for staying this time. ESPECIALLY after last time. You cannot protect property against a storm. Risking your life to try to do so is stupid.

DH was deployed to NOLA last time. He still talks about the smells & images. You live there....it should be even more engrained in your head. Why do you want to go thru that again? Get out.

He hasn't been called yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were sent again.

Hurricane warnings issued:

...HURRICANE WARNINGS ISSUED FOR THE NORTHERN GULF COAST...

AT 4 AM CDT...0900 UTC...A HURRICANE WARNING IS ISSUED FOR THE
NORTHERN GULF COAST FROM CAMERON LOUISIANA EASTWARD TO THE
ALABAMA-FLORIDA BORDER...INCLUDING THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS AND
LAKE PONTCHARTRAIN. A HURRICANE WARNING MEANS THAT HURRICANE
CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED WITHIN THE WARNING AREA WITHIN THE NEXT 24
HOURS. PREPARATIONS TO PROTECT LIFE AND PROPERTY SHOULD BE RUSHED
TO COMPLETION.

AT 4 AM CDT...0900 UTC...A TROPICAL STORM WARNING IS ISSUED FROM
EAST OF THE ALABAMA-FLORIDA BORDER TO THE OCHLOCKONEE RIVER....AND
FROM WEST OF CAMERON LOUISIANA TO JUST EAST OF HIGH ISLAND TEXAS.
A TROPICAL STORM WARNING MEANS THAT TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS ARE
EXPECTED WITHIN THE WARNING AREA WITHIN THE NEXT 24 HOURS.

Those in the path..do what you have to do to be safe.

I will be gone the rest of the day. Take care all.

Not sure if this was meant for me or not.

But just in case it is.. There is no reason my area should need to evacuate unless it is a huge storm. They dont evacuate my area ever, no need to since there is no storm surge. People around here dont have to protect their property from the storm, we dont leave because we dont need too. I dont live "in the bowl" or close to it. Katrina was a breeze for us... literally lol. We did lose power for a long time, but thats not an issue, especially in the land of the generators. Our main prob after katrina was my small town was jammed with evacuees and we just arent set up for that many people but life did kinda return to normal within a cpl of month. That shouldnt be an issue this time because of Louisiana's early response and sending everyone north.

Now with that being said, I will leave this time just because it is now being said that is one could be as bad as Betsy, which was a pretty bad one for the Baton Rouge area. That was in 1965 and we havent had one like that since.

Headed up to Alexandria which is just a cpl of hours away, but will be far enough away to miss the big winds, will get rain of course, but thats not big deal.

Off to pack!
