Hurricane Gustav (forcast models in first post) Be safe those in the path!

Low end Cat 3.....still nothing to mess around with. :sad1: Erin came into the panhandle a Cat 2 if I remember correctly, that was back in 95, and she ripped us apart! :guilty: :sad2: We down played her and definitely learned our lesson to NOT do that again. OPAL started coming in as a 4, but dropped to a STRONG 3 and devastated us, but we were pretty prepared and recovered rather quickly. Let's not even talk about IVAN(Cat 3)....everything a hurricane could be...storm surge, wind surge, rains, tornadoes...:sad2: I believe he was a 4 coming in and just dropped to a 3 upon coming ashore. If anyone from the panhandle remembers better...I'll take the correction, but I think I got the categories right for the hurricanes I mentioned. I lost my home to a category 3 hurricane(DENNIS '05), so they are NOTHING to mess around with. :(

Sorry but IMO even a Cat 2 is still a major storm let alone a Cat 3.
NOTHING run of the mil with hurricanes.

Sorry but I would be following what the experience mets saying.
Nowhere does Loy say the hurricane is "nothing". But I think it would be wise, now that the facts are changing, to dial the "mother of all hurricanes" hype back a bit. If you want to remain credible with people, you need to be straight with them. As Loy noted, the "facts" of 24 hours ago warranted the severity of the alarm, but not so much now. With the reduction in the storm surge forecasts (not Loy's), it appears that the largest concern of NOLA's levees may be moot if they perform as hoped.

I think just the fact that it hasn't increased in intensity is a hopeful sign particularly since they've been so worried about the storm surge and this is apparently heavily dependent on storm strength. I agree though that it could still rain like crazy and tornadoes are a concern too.

We're doing well here. We've lost power a couple of times, but we've been lucky and it's came back on quickly. THe longest so far was for a couple of hours earlier. We have lots of rain and wind, but not as bad as what was originally expected.

OUr family that stayed in Lafourche parish (mandatory evacuation area) are also doing well. We actually lost power and they haven't lost power yet! How crazy! They are all saying it's not too bad down there so far, so we are thankful for that.

We're struggling getting cell phone signals now, but we were able to talk to them earlier.

OPAL was a nightmare! It wasn't downgraded to a TS until it hit OHIO. YES Ohio, 12 hours after she made landfall! 300 miles inland and we had no power for days. IVAN was even worse for the pandhandle.

My cousin lives in Navarra(sp) Beach. He got caught by Ivan and couldn't get out. He road out the storm under the stairs of his house. He swore never again would he stay, if he was in the path.

Hubby and I used to live in Navarre and then Gulf Breeze and after hurricane Dennis we were through living by water. We now live further inland here in Crestview. :goodvibes

He had sent his wife and kids up here to his mothers days before. But he had to stay and finish up some things for work. He was packed and started out of his nieghborhood to come up here. When he saw his elderly neighbors trying to put up plywood. He said he couldn't pass and not help. By the time he got done doing that for them, it was too late for him to go anywhere. It was his first big hurricane. He was scared to death and swore never ever again.

I am not sure where that is located. I am thinking that it's the industry canal. Which if someone can correct me, if I'm wrong. It's not far from Jackson sq.

This was taken from the river in front of Jackson sq. You can see how close the water is to the bank. This was taken Feb of 06.

I was just watching cnn and there was all this flooding in NO..showed buildings with water almost to the roof. So the levees are not right at the edge of the canal?
There are areas on the other side of the levee that are getting flooding?

Wow. Have several friends living in Crestview and my FIL lives in DeFuniak Springs. My husband's aunt lives in Ft Walton but can evacuate to FIL's.
We live in south Dade County but are away from the water in an area that hasn't flooded in over 500 years. I wouldn't live on the water after living in So Fla for 33years. Just crazy.

For my pic, I was standing on top of the levee. As far as I know they are all built right on the waters edge.

Yep..we get plenty of Navarre, FWB, and sometimes Destin residents coming this way for a hurricane since we are further inland. More chance of tornadoes, but still a bit safer as far as wind surge and storm surge is concerned.

hey everyone.....We just received our power today at 4:30pm. DH is tired. he has worked everyday nonstop. It is pretty bad here. officials say that it will be 4 - 6 weeks before some people get power. Please keep up your prayers. it truly is a miracle that we have power. We live out in the country, and are usually the last to get power. Gas and ice are in great need.....
