Soliciting some opinions. We are thinking of remodeling our master bath and removing the jetted tub. We want to expand our shower and really make that nice.

We never use our tub and have three other bathrooms with tubs in the house if we ever need one.

Anyone do this? What do you think of this idea?

Go for it. Those big tubs are nothing but a waste of space. Some HUGE percentage of people never use their tub. We have one in our master and it's been filled *maybe* twice in the 8 years we've had it. Waste. Nothing but something more to clean.

The only time I wouldn't remove it is if it is the ONLY tub in the house. A house should have a tub somewhere so that there is a place to bathe small children.

We've been considering remodeling our bath to do the same, but probably won't because we are already seriously underwater on the house and we plan on selling in 3-4 years time. Just more money to lose! LOL.

If you don't use the tub get rid of it. For us the tub was used maybe twice a year and collected dust and hair the rest of the year. We made the move to the big shower and it's the best.

I am a big tub user, but as long as you have other tubs in the House I would think it's ok

When we remodeled our master bath several years ago, the architect was insistent that we put in a large soaking tub. Her reasoning was for resale. I just looked her square in the eye and said "I'm designing this house for me, not some future owner!" We have a tub in the kids bathroom and that's all I've ever wanted. Personally, I'd love a huge shower with a lot of water jets.

Get what you want and enjoy!

We have one full bathroom and removed the tub - the tile/glass shower is half the room. the best thing I ever did - I was not worried about resale since I plan to stay in the home until I cannot anymore - I never used the tub

My realtor told us that as long as there was one bath in the house, it was fine to have a master with just a shower.
So, we converted our old tub to a nice large modern shower.
--Our house sold about a year later without a problem. (Well, except we only had a one-car garage which seemed a huge sticking point for most buyers). We didn't know we'd be moving so soon after remodeling the bath and kitchen.

We have a huge soaker tub in our new house. I'd really liked to have left it out, but didn't know what to do with the space. It's never been used for bathing....it's a place for hanging clothes to dry that can't go in the dryer.

Good for you and I agree 100%. I can't stand all that crap on HGTV or internet real estate stories extolling future resale value over present enjoyment.

We are planning the same exact thing. I think it's a great idea!

Are you remodeling for selling or living in it?

If it is for living, go for it.

If it is for selling do the bare bones because you won't get that out of the house dollar-wise.

We built our house 14 years ago. The size of our master was usually built with a whirlpool tub. We said no to the tub, put in a standard shower and used the extra space for the mother of all linen closets!!! Never regretted it for a second. Our neighbors, same builder, built same time as us. They were a bit younger than us, and did the tub and a fancy glass shower. In 14 years, neither has ever been used! They use the other upstairs bath with the basic/tub shower.

How long are you planning to stay in the house? Since your house has 4 bathrooms I would assume you're in a nicer market. I think not having th big jetted tub in the master suite might cause you problems for resale at that market point since it's pretty standard. With a higher market house you don't want anything to stand in the way of selling since there is less demand.

BUT If you plan to stay forever don't worry about it.

The bath in our bathroom has no tub. It's just a little closet. Our house was built in '71.

When we remodeled a master bath in a house before we sold it we took out the tub and replaced it with a big walk-in shower with a bench seat. The house had two other bathrooms with tubs (one regular and one soaking). I still think that shower sold the house....

That's what I really want. I think it is the perfect set up for our golden years in case of mobility issues, too.

They shower upstairs when they have a master bath? That seems bonkers to me.

The masters is upstairs, the other bathroom is right outside the bedroom door. The master has large windows, that they didn't put curtains in, and the glass walls of the shower are harder to clean, than the basic shower, so they just use that. They have no kids, and it's just him now, so he is the only one in the house, so it's not like there is a crowd lining up to use that bathroom.

So not using the master bedroom then either? I guess that makes it more logical.

Ha! Dh and I were just discussing this exact issue.

I want just the shower. He would be fine with that if there wasn't the possibility we could be moving with job relocation.

There is a standard tub in the main bath, but the master currently has the giant 2 person jet tub. It's such a pain to clean.

I think we're meeting in the middle and putting a smaller freestanding soaker tub in just for resale. I'd still rather have extra cabinets and a designated make up area. :sad1:

Our jetted tub gets used on a regular basis by dd. When she was little she used to have winter "pool" parties in it with 2 friends :rotfl2:.

In the 10 years we've been in the house I've been in it once. I don't think dh has ever used it.

Dd is almost off to college so if we get to the point of remodeling I'd remove it.
