Thoughts on master bath with no tub

We are planning on taking ours out and putting in a nice shower - probably a "mediocre" one though, LOL! Just big with a couple of nice shower heads and a bench.

I won't miss dusting the tub, but I will miss the convenient place to keep my fold up drying rack!

I say do what you want! But it's amazing to me how many people don't use tubs. Really? Yowza...I LOVE my bathtub. It is my saving grace, lol. Hot water is cheaper than therapy...I have a lot of fibromyalgia pain and degeneration in my neck (at 27...), sometimes a hot bath is all that keeps me from wanting to cry due to the pain. We would never buy a house without a master bath tub, and my husband knows that, lol, but obviously I am in the minority!

Do what makes you happy :thumbsup2 it's your house!

I'm with you! I'm very surprised at the number of people who say they don't use a tub. Our family could not live without a tub. On bad days I've been known to take upwards of five or so tubs in a day to try to soak way the pain.

It's your renovation and if you prefer just a shower then go for it. I always prefer to see people renovate how they want rather than what will sell. Enjoy your home while you live in it and don't worry about what the "next" family wants.

We took out the soaking tub and small-ish shower stall in the master bath and replaced them with an awesome shower. We have the multi-head spray, rainfall shower head, built-in shelves (both corner and recessed), as well as a large built-in seat. We did this 5 years ago and haven't regretted it even once. Taking out the tub also gave me room for a small vanity table, which I use daily.

I did try out our new soaker tub when we remodeled the house 2 years ago. I think I can count on my hands the number of times I used the old tub in 30+ years, always for therapy, but we used to have a hot tub too, and that was what I most frequently used if I had soreness. But since we put in a massaging shower head in the master bath, that works far better.

Thanks everyone for your insights. Good to know I am not the only one who doesn't use their tub.
We will eventually sell this house but no plans in the near future. I am keeping that in mind though as most homes in our area have large master baths with jetted or soaking tubs.

I think if we really trick out the shower they won't even notice!!

The jacuzzi tub was one of the most exciting parts of buying a new house for me! Three of my four kids have taken all their baths in there (#4 is too little yet) because we have our master downstairs and I'm not going upstairs to give the kids baths. In fact, my 9yo son is in the tub with the jets on this very minute! I loved the tub when I was pregnant and I've used it for countless ice baths after running. The main reason I like it is because regular bathtubs aren't big enough to be mostly submerged--and what's the point in that??? I would really hesitate to buy a house without a nice tub. BUT, that's just me and I'm a firm believer that you should build the house you want, as long as you can handle the repercussions for resale.

Soliciting some opinions. We are thinking of remodeling our master bath and removing the jetted tub. We want to expand our shower and really make that nice.

We never use our tub and have three other bathrooms with tubs in the house if we ever need one.

Anyone do this? What do you think of this idea?

We did exactly this about 10 years ago and I have not regretted it at all.I love my huge shower!

I practically live in my tub! I soak almost every night. I personally would never buy a house without a master tub.

Everyone says they don't care about resale until they have to sell. People move on average every 7 years.

We are going to be doing the same thing soon. Only one bath on the first floor where our bedroom ! So renovations to include a new master bath with shower only and adding a powder room for guest. Now , my big question is to keep the dining room or not!! Will have a table that can fit up to 10 and z bar with seating for 4. Maybe I need to start a new thread on whether to keep or get rid of the Dining room or not !

I take a bath every night (shower in morning.) My mom takes a bath every night, too, so I guess that's just what I grew up thinking is "normal." I love it, though. Our master bath is a small combined tub/shower. I'd love a larger tub! I always get excited when we have a hotel room with a large soaking tub. Lol

Personally I wouldn't buy a house with no tub in the master bathroom, but I see from this thread that I'm the minority opinion!

I would love to remove our garden tub and expand the shower- it is a tiny little fiberglass one and we have used the tub maybe 2-3 times in the 16 years we have lived in our house.

In fact, we actually covered over our tub with a wooden platform- it is where the litter boxes go. If we had the tub taken out, we could expand the shower and have floor space for the litter boxes.

We have an outdoor hot tub which sees near daily use for pain issues. Hotter water, uses less than filing a tub daily so better for the environment than that, and we can go in together :goodvibes

I know for us, before we decided to go for new construction---a large, nice, shower and no tub was a selling point and a tub was a detraction---looking at other new construction I think the trend is headed that way right now . . .

How long are you planning to stay in the house? Since your house has 4 bathrooms I would assume you're in a nicer market. I think not having th big jetted tub in the master suite might cause you problems for resale at that market point since it's pretty standard. With a higher market house you don't want anything to stand in the way of selling since there is less demand.

BUT If you plan to stay forever don't worry about it.

A high end luxurious shower could be a selling point (a point of differentiation).

OP If it was your only tub I would say keep it but with other ones in the house I dont see any reason for you to not to get rid of it.

Another vote for shower only - my master bath has a fabulous shower. Have never missed the tub and have been here 10 years.

I would do it. As a potential buyer, I wouldn't let the lack of a bathtub in the master deter me from buying a house I really liked otherwise. It's something that can be changed again or added down the line for a potential buyer, if they really wanted to.

Girl, I don't blame you! If we had the money for a hot tub I'd be using that EVERY chance I got, lol.

I think every house needs at least one bath tub, just not in the master bath.
I am also in drought stricken California, and using a low flow show head 1.5 gallon per minute and turning the water off while soaping up, I use about 3 or 4 gallons of water to bathe. I would need 40 to 60 gallons if I took a bath, a horrible waste of precious water.

I would never ditch my big tub or purchase a home without one.

OP..Most likely, you or your heirs will eventually sell the house. No master tub would be a huge negative. IMO
