BL Summer Challenge 2009

:welcome: to the new additions, so glad to have you join us.

maznorm - I am right there with you on the fruit, it just isn't one of my favorite things to eat, veggies aren't a problem at all either. WTG on your loss so far, you are doing great!!!

I have a lunch out today with a friend but shouldn't be a problem to stay OP since we are going to Subway, will get lots of veggies. There is a lot on the list to get done today so a busy one is ahead but it can be positive, when I'm so busy, I don't think about snacking:thumbsup2. It is going to be a warm one here today but plan on getting out and planting a few flowers we bought last night along with working in a couple of flower beds. Maybe some of the sweating will take off some pounds:rotfl2:, if it was only that easy.

Must head off to check a few more things then it's time to sign off. Have a great Monday!!

Morning to all!

Welcome aboard to all of our newbies! Sorry I don't have time right now to welcome you each individually.

Now I KNOW why I only weigh once a week. After reading lots of the responses about weighing every day, I thought I would try it. Well... Saturday morning was great... I had lost the .6 that showed up for Friday's official weigh-in and I thought I was heading in the right direction. After a really good weekend (eating on plan and exercise), this morning I am up 1.2 lb. from Saturday morning! I will NOT be looking at the scale again until Friday morning. It is making me crazy.

Anyone have any great new recipes to share? DD made a "Hungry Girl" recipe last night that is very yummy. It is the

Yum Yum Brownie Muffins

1 box of devil's food cake mix
1 15 oz. can of pure pumpkin (not pie filling)

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mix the two ingredients together. DOn't add anything else that might be mentioned on the box. The mixture will be very thick. You might be tempted to add other things to make the batter smoother. DOn't do this!

Place the batter into a 12 cup muffin pan lined with baking cups or sprayed with nonstick spray. Bake for 20 minutes.

Makes 12 servings.

WW points - 3 pts. per muffin
Calories 181
Fat 3.5 g
Fiber 2 g

These were very tasty. Not particularly "brownie-ish" but like a nice chocolate cupcake. Too many points to have with breakfast, but it made a nice evening treat last night. And the pumpkin is actually good for you!

Have a great day everyone................P

Good monday morning fellow losers.
Thank you so much for all the well wishes and hugs. We talked to the oncologist yesterday, and my mom had multiple medical issues and isn't a candidate for chemo or radiation, so she's going to come home, and try a pill which inhibits an enzyme, and may slow down the cancer progression. She's in pretty good spirits, and excited to get home to her own bed. We're going to take it all one day at a time.
This thread is such awesome support for me, and I'm going to be ok.
I did step on the scale today, and am the same as friday, so I'm thrilled. I think stress, if you don't eat through it insanely, increases your metabolism.:rotfl:
Which segues nicely to the previous QOTD. I've almost always LOST weight on my WDW and DCL trips. I'm sure it's because I'm more physically active, and (in the PAST) I was often eating more wholesome or high end meals than I did at home. (Convenience foods and long hours in a chair were easy to improve upon.) This time I will be traveling with a Weight Watchers leader! So we will have our lovely table service meal of whatever we want, preparing breakfast (except for one) at the villa and being VERY conscientious of what is eaten the rest of the day. A nice discovery is that a DOLE WHIP is only 3 WW points! :thumbsup2 There's my treat!

.
Sounds like you will have a very healthy trip. Thanks for the dole whip tip! They are so good, and to compare that with a mickey ice cream bar which are my favorite, the dole whip wins hands down.

Ugh - not a great weekend for my weigh loss plan. DH and I are both sick with allergies/cold - no energy to exercise. Can't even take a nice walk outside because of how high the pollen is here. I really wanted to make up for my Applebee's over-cal meal with some exercise. Oh well. On the positive side, I was only 90 cals over my goal yesterday, despite not having the energy to track cals while I was eating. Today I should be on calories even without working out.
The allergies have been brutal around here too. Hope you are feeling better, and nice work staying close to your allotted calories. Sometimes when I'm not feeling well, I eat and eat.
I wasn't a very good BL particapant last week but, this week I'm going to do better. I finally didn't have to take any meds this morning for my cold. I hope we all have a great week!:flower3:
You're here now, and no guilt allowed. Everyone here is a good participant, even if real life doesn't let you come and post, you're working your plan, and making healthier changes. Glad you're feeling better.
We saw UP today. It was cute. It is amazing how much the computer animation has improved since Toy Story came out.
My son so wants to see this, so I'm hoping we'll get there next weekend. It does look cute.

Hi everyone,

I hope it is not to late to join. I'm 39 years old I have a DD14 and DS12. I need to lose 50lbs. I work full time at a bank and spend most of my day sitting in front of a computer.:surfweb: My husband lost 50 about 2 years ago and has maintained his loss. I gained back all 20 of the pounds I had lost within a year.

We are going to WDW for 10 days at the end of this summer. I would love to wear my size 12 shorts when I'm there. When we are on vacation I find that I do not over eat because there is no stress when I'm on vacation.
Welcome aboard. I think Luvbaloo already said to send her your starting weight and our weekly weigh in is on fridays.

I would like to join also, if it is not too late. I would like to drop 3-4 sizes before my trip in September and /or lose about 40-50 pounds. Right now, I'm a size 14-16.

I wasn't an overweight kid..just the other day, I found a mini-skirt I used to wear in my 20's and it was a size 6!!!:scared1:

I was doing well with weight loss a few months ago, but I had an illness for which I was taking Prednisone..Prednisone gives me a ravenous appetite so I backslid..not completely, but enough to make me feel bad.

Good luck to all here!
Welcome, the more the merrier. This is a great challenge, and we're all going to have a great, losing summer.
I have lost 2.5 pounds this week. This brings me down to 201.5 pounds. I am going away for the weekend in a few weeks and I want to hit my 5% goal by then. If I lose another 2.5 this week I will get my silver 7. Then I have 2 weeks to lose 3 pounds. It’ll be tough but I hope I can do it.
Congrats on the weight loss!! If you set your mind to it, you can do it. Maybe this week you'll reach One-derland!!

Going to lay by the pool today. :woohoo:

~Karen
Wish I could join you.

One day my whole family decided to get ice cream and I got one of those huge pickles. It's not ice cream, but I love those things and I was satisfied!
Sometimes we also go to Beaches & Cream and share a Kitchen Sink sundae for lunch! Who can beat ice cream for lunch!:cheer2:
Now I don't know if I could eat a pickle while everyone else had ice cream, but sounds like you love pickles. The kitchen sink looks and sounds amazing.

As hard as it is right now, you need to remember that overeating is only going to make you feel WORSE in the long run. You can't control your mom's health... you can't control how she is feeling or what the doctors will tell you. But you CAN control what you eat and how much. You can control if and how much you exercise. During this time of out-of-control stress you need to be able to control SOMETHING.... so let it be your food. Definitely easier said than done, I'm sure, but something to keep in the back of your mind.
Thank you so much for this wonderful advice. It is so true. I did pretty well with my eating yesterday, and today got up and did a watp exercise video. I can control it, and I will.

Kathy, I am so sorry to hear about your Mom and am sending you and your family good wishes, thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery! Your WISH friends are here for you. :grouphug:

I am off to America's favorite retailer to get some staples.
Thank you lisa.:flower3: Just what is america's favorite retailer?

Lisa I did wear a pedometer last time I went to Dw and one day I even hit 25000 steps. ANd remember that I have a bad ankle and we either took an afternoon back at the room or got back to the room in the early evening and had dinner at the food court and then back to the room to ice my ankle and watch the olympics.

ITrails End in FW We love to camp and it the place to eat in FW. I also love Sci Fi for the atmosphere

HAve a great day everyone.
25,000 steps is amazing. I've heard real good things about trails end. We did the hoop de doo last trip, and i wish we had more time to explore the campground when we were there.

Have a wonderful day.:)

P
Oh no, don't start the daily weighing!! It's like a rollercoaster, and it can become addictine. That 1.2 is not true. Don't listen to that scale. Don't come over to the dark side of daily weighing.:rotfl2:

That recipe sounds great, P. Thanks for sharing.

monday qotd- What do you do for exercise? How do you keep motivated to keep it up?
I don't think this was asked yet this challenge, but correct me if Im wrong.
I do the Walk away the Pounds videos, at least 5 days/week. It helps me keep my motivation by never skipping two days in a row, and also last summer I stopped completely and packed on 20 pounds, so this time I will not let myself stop exercising.

Morning loosers!

monday qotd- What do you do for exercise? How do you keep motivated to keep it up?

Right now I am swimming as my exercise. I love being in the water so my only challenge is getting my patootie over to sister's house each evening. I started with a couple weeks of 30 minutes of gentle movement (joint issues) and starting last night, kicked it up to 30 minutes of laps and water aerobics, with a 10 minute treading water cool down.

The instant I hit my 10 pound loss (this week..tomorrow?) I'll be adding in walks, to start building up some muscle and stamina. I have 14 weeks till I hit WDW and I want to do more than just walk from park bench to park bench. :lmao:

.

Monday qotd- What do you do for exercise? How do you keep motivated to keep it up?

I haven't been able to set aside time to exercise recently, so I've been trying to just keep moving the entire time I'm at work. I work at the Disney Store, and normally work an 8 hour shift. I got a pedometer yesterday because I'm kinda curious how much I actually walk during my shift.

Maria, tessiemez, and Tammy- thank you so much for your support and prayers. It is a surreal time and we are all taking it one day at a time, until we have more information, and are able to set up a plan. The waiting is definitely the hardest part, and she's already so weak, I hate to see her going through this. But on the other hand, she's a very tough lady and has come through a lot, so I hope she has the strength she needs to fight this.

My prayers are with you, your mom and your family.

Saturday qotd- When you go on vacation to WDW or elsewhere, do you stick to your weight loss plan completely, forget about it all together, or do something in between?

When I go on vacation to places other than Disney I usually do well following a diet (Usually). Vegas I have been good there, but I've also fallen off because my mom and I eat almost every meal out when I'm there. Disney - I even tried to be good in March and well, I just couldn't do it. In August, I'm not planning on watching what I eat. It's my big vacation. I'll work hard when I get back.

Sunday qotd- What is your favorite wdw restaurant?

Boma - HANDS DOWN!! Then probably Ohana

monday qotd- What do you do for exercise? How do you keep motivated to keep it up?

Mostly walking - outdoors and treadmill. I also enjoy lifting weights. I haven't done much recently though. I'm trying to work back into getting back on track.

Saturday I did ok, not perfect. We ended up staying at my BIL's house after the shower till around 7:30pm and we didn't get home till 9pm. We ended up eating the leftover's from the shower. I tried hard not to overeat. I did have a few desserts, but didn't overdo it. My weight is up from this day, but like last Saturday, it will just take a few days of good eating to lower it. I have faith I can still lose this week.

Yesterday on the way to the Nascar race my allergies came out with a vengance. I only get grass allergies sometime in May and June for a few weeks. I knew it was coming, because i could slowly feel them get worse. It was so hot at the race yesterday. Even after applying sunscreen 4 times I still got red. I was exhausted last night when we got home at 10pm and went straight to bed. I did manage to keep my calories at 1515 for the day though, so that is good. I had hoped for closer to 1500, the bag of sunschips with my organic hot dogs I grilled when we tailgated pushed me on the high end.

I also wanted to share a recipe with everyone. It's for a hummus that I constantly make and always have on hand for a quick meal or snack.

Clean Eating Hummus - from one fo Tosca Reno's clean eating cookbooks

1 can chickpeas
1 tbsp olive oil
1/3 cup tahini paste
4 tbsp lemon juice or juice from 2 lemons (I use santa cruz organic lemon juice)
a little sea salt to taste

When mixing in the food processor I add a little water at a time to get it smooth and loosen it up.

I eat this with crackers, veggies, as a spread in sandwiches (it's awesome with tomatoes and cucumbers in a tortilla). It also makes a mean healthy egg salad sandwich. Replace the mayo with the hummus and add a little spicy mustard. You can also replace the mayo with it in deviled eggs, again add a little mustard and top with paprika.

Monday qotd- What do you do for exercise? How do you keep motivated to keep it up?

I do Wii Fit - it's great because it's right in my living room. I get up and workout 30-60 minutes before getting ready for work. It motivates me because it tracks my exercise time, graphs my weight and BMI, etc. I know that if I mess up it will tell me the next day!

I worry that its not as challenging now that I've been doing it a couple months so I'm toying with purchasing a gym membership...

I'm not doing a very good job of keeping up with this thread! Hopefully once the kids are out of school things will be less crazy around here!

Sat. QOTD: When you go on vacation to WDW or somewhere else, do you stick to your weight loss plan completely, forget about it all together, or do something in between?

I try to stick as close to it as possible. I don't stress about trying to get the nutrition info for everything I eat so I can figure out the WW points, but I at least try to limit my portion sizes and not go overboard on things like cheddar cheese soup and choc. mousse.

Sun. QOTD: What is your favorite WDW restaurant?

It's hard to pick just one, but I think I'll have to say Crystal Palace because they have a large selection of food that's all "normal". I'm not into exotic things. I don't even eat Mexican or Chinese food at all. I'm happy with the buffet of cold cuts and cheeses!

Mon. QOTD: What do you do for exercise? How do you keep motivated to keep it up?

I'm doing the Wii Active 30 day challenge right now. I also do the Wii fit and walk the dog. I keep motivated by weighing in at WW each week. I know if I don't exercise, the weight just isn't going to come off!

Pjilla - Those chocolate pumkin muffins are really good. I learned that recipe when I did that several years ago! My kids even love them. I think I will go and make some later today. Sometimes you just need a little chocolate:goodvibes

Friday's QOTD - I weight myself every morning right after I get up. Sometimes at night also. Bad habit but I can't seem to stop. I was not very happy with my weight loss this week (0.8)but it was that time of the month so I am glad I didn't gain. So I weighed Saturday morning and was down 2.2lbs - so sometimes weighing daily is a good thing! In the past I would be discouraged if I gained weight but this time around I have just decided to wait a few days and see what happens, without getting upset or eating something I shouldn't.

Sat - In the past when we were on vacation I just ate whatever I wanted. I am going to do a modified version of that this time. We are going to Fort Wilderness for the 4th of July (not to the parks though) so I will be able to cook healthy for most of our meals. I will probably have a few things I wouldn't eat at home though. At the end of July we are camping in GulF Shores so I should be ok that vacation also. In October we are going back to Disneyworld. We are camping but we are going to the parks and I know that we will eat at least 2 meals out a day. That will be more challanging. However we are running the tower of terror 13k so maybe that will make up for eating more!!

Sun - My favorite restaurant is Pecos Bills in Magic Kingdom. I love their hamburgers and sauteed onions. Yummy! The good thing is that my dh and I usually split one hamburger so that helps. I also love to eat the Cinderellas's castle.

Today's QOTD - I am currently doing the couch to 5k running program. We are actually starting week 2 later tonite. Next 5k we are doing is on Aug 1st. Before that we were walking/jogging for about the past 3 weeks. I know that doesn't sound like a long time, but this is actually the longest time frame we have consistently done our exercise and not quit for various reasons. Yesterday we didn't walk, but we were out in the yard all day working so I think that counts too!! We also have a total gym that I like to use but am having a harder time working that into the routine.

Kathy - I am really sorry to hear about your mom. It sounds like she is feeling better being at home.:grouphug:

Hope everyone has a great week losing!!!!:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

Jennifer

Saturday qotd- When you go on vacation to WDW or elsewhere, do you stick to your weight loss plan completely, forget about it all together, or do something in between?

Here is how it works for me: I have gone to WDW and eaten way, WAY too much. I have also gone to WDW and exercised flexible restraint, eating until I'm comfortably satisfied and not stuffed, even at a buffet, splitting an entree with DH instead of finishing a whole one myself, or getting a kids' meal, sharing a big hot fudge sundae (or even 2) with the entire family instead of everyone getting their own. I can tell you that I actually have a better time and enjoy what I'm eating more when I am mindful of what I'm eating and purposely not overdoing it. Generally, it works out to maintaining my weight - the increase in food and the increase in activity tend to match up pretty well. If I don't pay attention, though, and eat until I am stuffed on a regular basis, I can tell you, I can overeat ANY amount of exercise.

A side-note regarding the kitchen sink - we did get one one time and it was fun, but SO much ice cream, but we'll probably never get another one because it just seemed like too many competing flavors. The mint chip, strawberry, coffee ice cream combo with the pineapple sauce etc. etc. just didn't agree with me, I guess. :confused3

Sunday QOTD - Fave WDW restaurant?

Definitely Boma. We are vegetarians and they have many, many dishes that we all enjoy greatly. I only wish they had a soft serve ice cream machine! That noodle dish they have at Hollywood and Vine is SO good, too, though. And I LOVE the veggie platter at the Tangerine Cafe.

Mon. QOTD: What do you do for exercise? How do you keep motivated to keep it up?

I have really gotten this together over the past 2 years. I started with the C25K program and have since found that having a fun race to look forward to as well as a training program to follow really keeps me on track with the aerobic workouts. Plus there is something so self-reinforcing about the running. I do start to feel the grumpiness coming on when I go more than about 3 days without a run, and I usually feel so good when I'm running, and after, that it's easy to want to go out and do it now.

The strength training and cross training has been a longer time coming, but I do have a Gaiam resistance band workout that is like therapy for my back, so I usually manage to do that once or twice a week - gotta keep the back working well. I recently started a push-up challenge, as well. Nothing like a little structure to keep me going! I'm in week 2 now and the muscle soreness has stopped and I can already tell I'm a lot stronger!

Melanie - those hummus ideas are GREAT! I love hummus. I'm going to have to try that hummus egg salad!

Monday QOTD- What do you do for exercise? How do you keep motivated to keep it up?
I mostly do cardio at the gym - elliptical machine or walk/jog intervals on treadmill. I have tried to work in some strength training but I lose focus or get bored. I have been trying to do the Biggest Loser Bootcamp DVD once a week at least, which incorporates cardio & strength training.
Now that exercise has become so much of my routine, I want to do it. I haven't been to the gym since Thursday because of my cold and I am bummed. My iPod Touch is the other essential item for my work outs. I have a few podcasts that I follow & just got an audiobook, but mostly I love watching TV shows. I bought this most recent season of the Biggest Loser from iTunes and would work out to that - it was so motivating! Now I'm trying to decide what my next series should be...

Monday QOTD- What do you do for exercise? How do you keep motivated to keep it up?

I do a few different things for exercise. I walk on the treadmill (alternating 3 minutes flat then 3 minutes full incline), or I do a combo walk/run on the treadmill. I usually wear ankle weights on the treadmill. I will walk outside if I am away from home (like on my break at work) or if I have someone to go with. Sometimes I will wear weights for this also.

I do the Wii fit occasionally (maybe twice a week). I do some yoga and some aerobics. I have created my own Wii powerstep program and it is a pretty good workout plus I can watch tv at the same time.

I have a few DVDs that I use regularly. I was doing Jillian Michaels 30 day Shred for several weeks, but the knee pain it was causing was unbearable, so I switched over to the Biggest Loser Cardiomax. It still causes some knee pain, but I can modify it somewhat and it isn't too bad. I also do the Dancing With The Stars Latin Cardio Dance, but I don't love it.

I also occasionally take a bike ride with DS or I'll spend a few minutes running the stairs at home or I'll stop what I am doing and do 100 jumping jacks.

When I go to the Y during DD's swim season I use the treadclimber and the ellpitical, plus some of the Nautilus weights. I haven't gotten up the nerve to take a class yet, but I would like to.

What keeps me motivated??..... The fear of the weight returning. I am SO much happier with myself at this weight... it still amazes me. I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror at work today and my thought was "WOW, am I really that slim???" What a thrilling feeling. And as I get older and my metabolism slows down, I need the exercise more and more. I KNOW if I stopped exercising that I would probably never lose another pound and I would gain. Just too scary to think about...........................P

Sat. QOTD: When you go on vacation to WDW or somewhere else, do you stick to your weight loss plan completely, forget about it all together, or do something in between?

I try to stay OP, but it really depends on where we are vacationing. We don't have any WDW or DCL trips planned, but we are taking a weeks fishing trip in the Eastern Sierras in Oct. The really nice thing is we are renting a cabin for the week, so we will be preparing most all of our meals.

Sun. QOTD: What is your favorite WDW restaurant?

San Angel Inn in Mexico

Mon. QOTD: What do you do for exercise? How do you keep motivated to keep it up?

I take a 3 mile walk on my lunch hour and I also use the Wii fit.

Monday QOTD: What do you do for exercise?

I run or walk 4 mi most days, I also do 1 hr. of yoga once a week. My motivation is the WDW Half Marathon. I know that if I don't keep up my base, I won't be able to do the training to get through the race. I have finished twice, and I want my third medal! I'm also really trying to lose weight, so that motivates me -- if I don't move the pounds won't either!

Maria :upsidedow

Hi everyone,

I hope it is not to late to join.

Welcome, Riverhill!

I would like to join also, if it is not too late.

Welcome, luvthemouse71!

You may want to check the sticky at the top of the WISH board for information about our challenge and post #12 for information about the COW (challenge of the week).

Great job!

monday qotd- What do you do for exercise? How do you keep motivated to keep it up?

Ooohhh, you've found my achilles heel . . . this is an area that I need work although I am much more active in 2009 that I have been in a long time. Thanks to the COW I use my pedometer every day and have added a walk around the block. I like the 30 day shred DVD but it is too intense for more than a day or two a week -- I don't care what you say, Jillian, I am not doing jumping jacks -- ever! I will answer part 2 below . . .

I have faith I can still lose this week.

Sure you can!

What keeps me motivated? Inspiring posts from all of you! :thumbsup2

Corinnak, I was admiring our clippie when I was checking the boards with my iPhone -- it even looks good when it is small!

Today was not a good work day but I am staying totally OP. I am taking my Peroni (3 pts) and sitting on the porch and doing the single digit dance for DL. Then I will take a walk.

Have a great evening, losers!

Monday QOTD- What do you do for exercise? How do you keep motivated to keep it up?
I have been walking around my neighborhood. Usually 2 miles. I have been adding some jogging in with my walk. Some days that feels easier than others. I really wish it got daylight early enough for me to do my walk/runs in the mornings, but it doesn't:headache: It just seems harder for me to work them into my evening, but I am managing.

My main motivation is the fact that it is summer. I want to keep losing weight, and I don't want to get any more flabby in the process!;)

Oh by the way, I joined sparkpeople.com this weekend, and it is wonderful! I am loving it. Journaling my food and calorie intake on the website has really kept me focused and motivated! Plus I am finding some good looking recipes on there that I look forward to trying!
