BL Summer Challenge 2009

Been working in the yard also this morning and man is it hot out there! We have one of those above the ground 18ft x 4ft pools. We got it put up today.

Then I came in and drank some gatorade and made myself a turkey sandwich. I have never liked tomatoes, but suddenly I love them on sandwiches and burgers. They really are good. Anyway, while I ate I decided to join on the Sparkpeople website. I entered in my toast with Polaner spread this morning, then my turkey sandwich and baked cheetos, and man oh man! I have ate half of my calories for the day. I have never really tracked calories before, and they sure add up fast!:scared1:

It figured my daily calorie range at 1,220 - 1,570. I first saw that and thought no problem, but I am really getting an eye opener! No wonder I haven't seen a loss the past 2 wks. I am probably taking in more than I should, all the while thinking that I am doing good. I hate to know how many calories I was taking in before, when I ate what the heck I wanted without worrying about it. No wonder my weight has gone up over the past few years!:sad2:

Oh well, this really motivates me to track everything I put in my mouth. I hope it makes a difference for me!

Oh, I almost forgot that I got myself a pedometer at the store last night. This am I took 2346 steps!

Now I think I am gonna go shower off some of my stink from working outside, and then tackle house cleaning this afternoon!

Not to get off topic, but I have been obsessing over those pools lately! I really want one. Our yard is on a very slight slope, though. Is it a pain to level the yard for those pools? I was thinking of getting the 12 ft wide one x 36" deep. Would you mind PMing me? I don't want to take over this board with non weight topics.

But on topic: Do you mean you have been taking in 1,220 - 1,570 calories and not losing weight? It seems like that would be low enough for some good results!

Thanks!

Good saturday afternoon everyone!! It's been a busy morning for me, and I'm just getting on line. It's been busy here which I love to see.
Thanks for asking about WW. It's going pretty well now that I am doing some more planning and really making use of my activity and weekly points. I think it really does help you to make better choices when you are going to eat something. That 5 point stuff I was eating didn't take me too far. :rotfl: I obviously have a long way to go but it seems like something I can stick with for the long run -- you know, like the rest of my life! :thumbsup2
It's so true that the healthy food takes you so much farther in satisfaction and energy, as well as point wise. Too bad the bad stuff tastes so good. I like the points system, because I'll look at something that I might want, but when I figure out how point heavy it is, sometimes it's not worth it. Not all the time of course, which is why i'm here. I think you said you were journalling before you joined ww, which is awesome, and hopefully is helping you make a smooth transition.

Hey everyone...I had the best dinner last night...Lipton chicken! So easy! I originally got the recipe from WW and thought you all might like in.
Thanks for the recipe. The frozen chicken is a good idea, seems like when I do chicken in the crockpot and leave it for the day, it gets over done, but that may just be the recipe, not enough sauce.

I'm definitely going to try to utilize the baby for whatever exercises I can. I do like to lay on my back and slowly "bench press" her! She only weighs a little more than twelve pounds, but after a minute or two you can really feel it in your arms!

I heard that celery, by itself, is basically a zero-calorie snack. Anyone know if this is true? I'd love something to idly gnaw on!
great exercise plan, and so rewarding to see her smiling face. I think celery is basicly a zero calorie snack, because you burn the small amt of calories chewing it up. On ww, it is free, so you can have as much as you want. Someone at ww once asked about taking points for brocolli if you at a double serving, and I remember my leader saying, don't worry about broccolli, that isn't what got us here, and it's so true.

I've got a shower tomorrow afternoon. I plan on eating breakfast and lunch here at home and then trying not to have anything unless there is fruit at the shower. At worst case scenario I'll limit myself to one goodie.

Sunday we are going to the Nascar race and we plan on bringing the grill and tailgaiting. This will be good for me since that means I can bring foods that will keep me on track and not have to rely on the junk sold there.
Sounds like a great plan for two busy days. Have fun.

Today was a planned higher cal day for me and we went out to eat dinner at Applebee's. But I'm still feeling guilty and gross and frustrated about it. I'm sad that I didn't actually enjoy the meal that much, considering how far it sent me over my calorie goal for the day. If I'm going to go off plan, I'd rather have a piece of pizza and a dessert.
Don't stress, what's done is done, and if you get right back on track, you will be fine. Hope today is a better day, and

I'm here to confess: I am the one with the real-life delays on the logo - it is underway now, though, so no worries. Father-in-Law visit requiring full-house excavation, end of school year mayhem and a technical difficulty that I won't even bore you with. I've sent a draft to Lisa and hopefully we'll have something very soon! Unless someone has beaten me to it...which is certainly possible at this point! I'm so sorry to hold up the show. :sad2:
What an adorable clippie, and thanks for posting the link too, I needed it also.

I stayed the same this week which is fine, it's been a rotten week. At least I'm actually journalling and counting points, even if I'm not staying within the range.
:hug:Hope you're having a better day. It's great you are journalling and keeping track of those points even if you are over. I always figure if I'm writing it all down, no matter how much over I am, it's better than when I don't journal and lose complete control.

I had a pretty good day yesterday, stayed OP and was able to get some things done around the house that needed it. We have ds's baseball game this morning then back home for housekeeping while dh & ds work a while. I hope to get a few flowers planted later this evening.
!!
We had baseball too, and baseball pics. I should get out and do some gardening, but don't feel like it. Have fun, and plant some flowers for me.

happy Saturday! what a crazy week it has been at my house --and today is my youngest DD dance recital. she works so hard it's awesome to see her beam on the stage ;)

CONGRATS to our losers and maintainers this week! I did see small loss, but a loss none the less and i'll take it! it's been a couple weeks since a loss ----
Congrats on the loss, and have fun at the recital. It's is awesome to see their little faces up there, so proud of themselves.

Well...... yesterday to work (casual Friday's) I wore my 10's. And today I just ironed up another pair of 10's. Yep - I'm hanging up my 12's because they are just too baggy on me - YEAH! The 10's fit fine! Next stop - Size 8 - All aboard :) All those 6's and 4's in my closet better watch out. I'm hoping by August they fit :) Hmm - maybe I can dream of being in them by July?
Melanie, that is fabulous. What a great feeling, and the way you're going, you'll be into those 8s in no time.

The end of the school year is always a crazy time at our house, too. I will be glad when school is out next Friday. Going to Disneyland the following week might have something to do with that too. :cool1:
How fun to have a trip coming up. I'm jealous. I just printed next years school calendar out, to look for week to plan a trip.

DH and I only chose Applebee's to get their 2 for $20 meal deal - appetizer and 2 entrees. We split the spinach-artichoke dip (I'm sure an insane amount of calories, I guessed using Ruby Tuesday's nutrition guide) and then had a cheeseburger (entree selection very limited, none of the WW ones). I only ate half the burger and drank water, so that's something. Before counting calories, I wouldn't have thought twice about the amount of cals in my splurge meal for the week. I think I'm more sad that I went that far over and didn't get dessert!
It is amazing how many calories are in restaurant food. The last time I went out, we went to 99, and I ate 12 points for my dinner, and I had researched before hand, then decided to get one of those little cheesecake shot glass desserts- it was like 700 calories, and more points than the whole dinner. You are so right, before you wouldn't have thought twice abouthow much you ate, but you only ate half the burger, and drank your water, so that's good.

Oh, I almost forgot that I got myself a pedometer at the store last night. This am I took 2346 steps!
Nice job on the walking. :thumbsup2

Saturday qotd- When you go on vacation to WDW or elsewhere, do you stick to your weight loss plan completely, forget about it all together, or do something in between?
I thought with summer coming quickly, we all could get some good tips from each other. I'm kind of middle of the road. For wdw, I find the walking definitely helps counteract the eating, and I pretty much eat whatever i want, but stay away from fried foods, and drink plenty of water, and usually only gain a couple pounds or stay the same. I have a harder time getting right back on track after a vacation, and then I will see a gain. For summer, we do some weekend trips, and I don't follow the plan usually, but this summer, I'm really going to try and be a little more controlled.

Do you mean you have been taking in 1,220 - 1,570 calories and not losing weight? It seems like that would be low enough for some good results!

It says that is how many calories I should be eating to loose weight. I have been eating more than that:headache:

Saturday qotd- When you go on vacation to WDW or elsewhere, do you stick to your weight loss plan completely, forget about it all together, or do something in between?

I have done both over the years. Usually if it is not Disney I will stick to my plan, WW, making sure I have all my weekly points to use on the trip. If it IS Disney it can be a lot more difficult. Usually I will try to bring my own breakfast (granola bar), eat a salad for lunch and have what I want for dinner. That way I am doing some healthy things while also having some of the things I really look forward to a Disney.

Have a great day everyone.

Saturday qotd- When you go on vacation to WDW or elsewhere, do you stick to your weight loss plan completely, forget about it all together, or do something in between?

What a timely question! We leave for vacation at Universal June 18th for 10 days (three days w/my SIL, so virtually no control over the food there ), and I've been trying to figure out how to handle it so I don't get my usual result, gaining 5+ lbs :scared1:

I am committed to working out, which will be different. The gym at our hotel is open 6 am to 8pm, so I should be able to workout most days. DH will be working out, and I will want to not be slacking, so that will help.

I'm planning on having 1 planned treat per day. For instance, the day we lunch at Margaritaville, I'm having a margarita and volcano nachos, and eating fruit and yogurt for breakfast, and a salad for dinner. Our hotel has a gelato bar, so I intend to find the smallest size they have. I will not be shy about ordering kids meals when I can. DS is 11 but eats like an adult (I am so glad he has his father's skinny genes!), so when we get takeout people just assume the kids' meal is for him. :rolleyes1

So, after all that, my goal is something in between instead of just forgetting how to spell D-I-E-T like I usually do :thumbsup2

Saturday qotd- When you go on vacation to WDW or elsewhere, do you stick to your weight loss plan completely, forget about it all together, or do something in between?

I don't stick to my weight loss plan completely but I do try to be aware of what I am doing and not go totally off plan. When I go to DL I am going to try something a little different. I am wearing my pedometer so I know how far I really walk -- I think I overestimate how far I've walked and overindulge. "I've been walking all day so I can have a real Coke." Ummm, I don't think so :sad2:. I don't even want to calculate how many points are in a Monte Cristo . . . if I have one I will only eat half.

Sarah, your plan sounds like a good one. And, Maria, I admire anyone who will work out on vacation -- you are truly dedicated!

Kathy, have fun with your trip planning. I always say planning is half the fun because it lasts a lot longer than the trip!

Its been a relaxing Saturday for me. I re-weighed this morning, and some of yesterday's gain was just bloat, but 0.9lbs is real gain. As my DH told me, I need to kick up the weight loss with some consistent exercise. Next week will be better again!

MEFORDIS ( & everybody else too :) ) - if you want to know exactly how you rank, just PM me. I am only posting some of the top % loss each week. Normally it is the top 10, but I may do something else if the mood hits me, but I'm happy to PM anybody their own ranking (ie #14 out of 30). So if anybody has a question just PM me. I don't open all the PM's right away (especially on Friday when they come pouring in!)

Thanks to everybody for getting their numbers in. There's only 7 numbers missing. Unfortunately, it looks like a couple of people have dropped out as they haven't sent in a number in 2 weeks. :sad1:

Saturday qotd- When you go on vacation to WDW or elsewhere, do you stick to your weight loss plan completely, forget about it all together, or do something in between?

Something in between. We did DL at spring break, and in the park, actually managed to eat fairly well, choosing veggies when possible and less pop than in the past. However the huge drive their and back (about 28hrs each way) we ate fast food the whole way, which wasn't good for the waistline.

Saturday qotd- When you go on vacation to WDW or elsewhere, do you stick to your weight loss plan completely, forget about it all together, or do something in between?

Well... in the past (previous to 2008) any vacation was an excuse to totally blow the diet. No exercise, no eating control, nada.

But I think I finally have a handle on it. When we were in WDW about a year ago I was really careful about what I ate, but I still enjoyed plenty of treats. I did gain a bit, but not a lot and I got right back on plan within 24 hours of returning home.

When we took our usual family vacation over the summer, it was hard. I did well some days and not so good other days (that damn cheesecake called my name SO LOUDLY). But I still got some exercise (just walking and swimming, but still something). I did gain a bit, but I got back on plan as soon as we returned home.

On a few weekends and overnights away we have had lately I have been really dedicated. I've brought my scale along if my time away included weigh-in day. I bring along a cooler of snacks, etc. I hit the exercise room at the hotel or ran outside if needed. And I am already planning what type of exercises I will be doing at our lake house vacation this summer (like what exercise DVD to bring along). I'm thinking about what our meal will be (we take turns making meals) and how I can incorporate a really healthy, low point meal that everyone will eat. And cheesecake is NOT on the menu this summer!! And I'm planning to bring a HUGE fruit platter to our annual "eat-a-thon" July 4th holiday with DH's side of the family.

So, my overly long answer to your question is...I do something in between. I don't totally stay on program, but I don't go overboard either.............P

That sounds like a good disney plan, and actually good for any vacation- salad at one meal, and a light bkfst.

I bet you will be surprised with the pedometer, and really clock some good mileage. I've never been to DL, but in WDW, I feel like we walk tons, and someone on the last challenge had worn their pedometer and I think they were up in the 16,000 step range if I remember correctly.

I have not had a good day eating wise. We got some bad news about my mom, and have had a stressful day. She was diagnosed with lung cancer, and there's lots more testing to figure out how advanced, and staging, etc, but it's emotionally draining. I initially had done ok, up to see her this morning, and then to baseball with my son, and really was planning not to turn to food, but this afternoon, ended up at my sisters house, all just sitting around and a box of chips ahoy cookies came around, and I downed about 8 of them, and then later they ordered pizza, but I only had a slice and a half. I thought for a little bit, that I would ask someone else to take over coaching, but I think it will be good for me to continue this week, and hopefully will help to keep me on track. So I'll at least check in daily and have a qotd every morning, and with all your help and support, I'll get through this without gaining any weight. (realistically, this week anyway, I'll be happy with a maintain.)

Hope you're all enjoying the weekend.

Thanks so much for being the weightkeeper, and glad your gain is almost gone. That's too bad we've lost a few, but it is a tough time of year to keep on track. At ww the leader was talking about if we stop coming now, and restart in september how much would we weigh then, and all of us agreed we would be up between 5 and 20 pounds, but if we kept going, even if we didn't lose anything over the summer with all that is going on, we'd be much better off than if we quit.

I have "in the past" way overdone it on vacations. We are planning a trip in a few weeks and I plan to enjoy some of my favorites in moderation, but I will be walking my butt off at Dollywood.

 No, I have a really hard time saying on track.

My2E's--I just joined Sparkpeople yesterday--seems like a really great website! Between that and TheDailyPlate, I think I'm getting a much better idea of what I'm consuming (I was having waaaay too much without realizing it, too)!

Thought I'd share my favorite snack this week:

*1 cup sliced mushrooms (15-20 calories);
*Some Better than Buillon Vegetable base--(one tsp has 10 calories, but I don't use a whole tsp);
*a few sprays of I Can't Believe It's Not Butter, which incidentally I can believe is not butter, but I don't really care (0 calories for five squirts!);
*a sprinkle of sage (well, a whole lot of sage for me. I'm a sage nut!)

I throw the mushrooms in a pan on low heat and sautee in the veggie base, sage and a few squirts of the "butter"--and a little water in the pan to help it along. This may not be people's cuppa tea--they are VERY flavorful!--but I'm addicted to them! I could eat them aaaall the time. In my vegetarian days I'd have them--light on the sage and veggie base--for breakfast.

Proud of myself today ... at Costco there was a sale on Baklava. I walked all the way to the register before turning around to put it back, but I did put it back. And *gosh*, that baklava looked yummy.

So, today on my way out the door I hopped on the scale and it said I'd gained
seven pounds! I was freaked until m husband pointed out that I had both my purse and the diaper bag on my shoulder. :lmao: I felt like moron, but a relieved one.

Mikamah--I'm so sorry for the struggle your family is going through. I can't imagine what a terrible time you're having. Your family is in my prayers, and I'm believing for your mom's speedy recovery! :grouphug: If you need it, we're here for all the encouragement and release you need. :-)

Keep up the good work everyone! We can do it!

I bet she did great, can't wait to see those pictures!!

Hey everyone.

Just had to share this. At Christmas time when I went to Vegas, I came to the realization that I had gained weight and my size 10 jeans were - well way too tight to wear to Vegas. I had bought the 10's out of desperation when I needed something to wear in September when DH came home from Afghanistan. Before that I was still squeezing into my size 8 jeans. So I was sad that I had to actually go buy 10's and 12's last fall and winter. I remember feeling so fat at Christmas time. No fun seeing family and friends and going to Christmas dinner and feeling yucky and fat.

Well...... yesterday to work (casual Friday's) I wore my 10's.

Off to finish getting ready for the shower and put on my 10's :) Wish me eating success at the shower today!

WTG on getting into the 10's and being comfortable!! You'll be in the 8's soon!! Keep up the great work.

I'm in the middle somewhere, if there is something I want, I just do a smaller portion. I try to get lots of salads in while on vacation along with plenty of water. While being at WDW of course I get in a good amount of walking so that helps too. I am much more aware of what I'm putting in my mouth no matter where I am now that I'm on this lifestyle change journey.

That sounds like a good disney plan, and actually good for any vacation- salad at one meal, and a light bkfst.

I wore my pedometer this past trip to WDW and I saw the 14,000-18,000 steps most days, I believe I even had a 20,000 one day.

I'm sorry to hear about your mom, will be keeping everyone in our prayers!!

Yesterday was a pretty good day, after ds's ballgame, they went to work, I did a few things around the house and then worked on a cross stitch piece. Once they came back, we went out and worked in the garden, planted a few more okra plants that FIL brought over, tended up everything, put stakes and tape around everything since we'd seen deer tracks and got everything watered. I'm really looking forward to it all coming in so we can have some to eat now but more importantly to have this winter. It has been several years since we've planted anything and I'm glad we decided to give it a go again this year. I'm already making my list for next year so we can make it bigger and better:thumbsup2...not sure that dh will like to hear that;).

It is raining here this morning, didn't know it was in the forecast but enjoying listening to it fall. Hope it will wash away some of the pollen, etc.

I'm making a not so healthy brunch item today but will adjust my dinner as necessary tonight.

Hope everyone has a great Sunday!!

Maria, tessiemez, and Tammy- thank you so much for your support and prayers. It is a surreal time and we are all taking it one day at a time, until we have more information, and are able to set up a plan. The waiting is definitely the hardest part, and she's already so weak, I hate to see her going through this. But on the other hand, she's a very tough lady and has come through a lot, so I hope she has the strength she needs to fight this.

The multiquote thingie isn't working for me right now, and I really like it.;)

Tammy- your garden sounds awesome. Don't they say a couple years off will help the soil rebuild nutrients, so you should have a really good crop this year. There's nothing like fresh tomatoes, those are my favorite.

tessiemez- that recipe sounds delicious, and very healthy. I'm not big on mushrooms, but I bet I could do the same thing with other vegies. Way to go on the baklava!!:cool1:

CruiseBoundnKY- Moderation is the key to this whole weight loss thing. Sounds like you have a good plan for dollywood. I hear that it awesome there.

Sunday qotd- What is your favorite wdw restaurant?
Mine is Crystal Palace, and I totally overdo it there. I love the food, and we've always had so much fun there with pooh and friends. We've been there for all 3 meals on our last 3 trips, and it is our must do for future trips.
