DrHug is keeping an eye on the Daytona 500 today, well after he got up at noon anyway. Good for him! :goodvibes He enjoys watching the races even more since he did the Petty Driving Experience at WDW. Knowing how it feels in those cars really revs him up! He's my favorite NASCAR driver, ya know.

If any of you are interested in our funding school mess in Ohio, here is a link to a very good article. I am quoted at the very end.

Wow Jon. I believe NJ put a hold on any more state funding about 3 or 4 years ago, leaving the district tax payers more and more of a burdon. Now they have capped their % of increase for the school budgets, leaving many open to start more cutting and not being able to fix things. As for the % the state pays of the budget, I believe it is less than 50% also (I think it is WAY less).:sad2:

Marielle, I had the same question. We also pay for field trips & the cost of the bus is included in that amount. Of course the current principal has cut back the number of field trips per grade level to one per year. UGH! The teachers are begging programs to come to them in the school to compensate.

The field trips are paid for by the school in the elementary grades, with some of that coming from the PTA. The PTA also helps with programs coming to the school. But, this was the first year the school had thier own fundraiser and would not let the PTA do theirs.

Very interesting article, John.

One question (and I realize this is a tiny part of the financial issue, but was just wondering): Did the districts cover field trips in the past? Here, parents pay for the field trips (museum admission, etc, at a group rate) and the PTO (fundraising) covers the bus costs. PTO also covers any low-income situations.

Good question Marielle . . .

Most of what the school district covers for field trips is transportation - the school bus to get there. If there is a fee, like the trip to Cedar Point mentioned in the article, the kids pay to get in (or the PTO if a low income student). For some special trips, like to Washington DC, etc. the kids raise money to defer the cost.

The basic reason for cancellling field trips wwas the cost of transportation.

The thing is, that when you look at this state to state, you have to compare all taxation . . . income tax, etc. Almost ALL taxes in Ohio (including our income tax) was originally passed to fund education. The same with our state lottery.

The politicians quoted in the paper are part of what they call here the "cave Man caucus" who don't give a hoot about public education. (they are very conservative Republicans - sorry Angie).

I just found out there is a club libby lou in Downtown Disney. I asked John and Amy about it and John said he would pray for me.

Besides asking for help from Deity, should i make reservations in advance? Do I need to bring my inhaler?

Also, Morketts, do you realize we will be there for the POTC3 Premier? Everything I have read is that if you don't want to wait for 12 hours to see the stars, the rides will be great...

Angie,

I am having vacation planning take care of all my ressies. Do you want to meet somewhere for dinner on the 19th?

Anyone else?

Great article John! I like the comparison between Alex and Sophia's school experience. I was, however, waiting for the banana picture.

Can you believe it? They did not even want to hear about Bobby Banana, or Captain Spanx! What kind of a newspaper is THAT?

No problem, John1. Some of us conservative Republicans do care about children and education, but also expect financial responsibility with the money we give. Not insinuating that your district is not responsible, but there are some around here that aren't.

Now John1, I bet your local paper would LOVE to hear about Bobby Banana and Captain Spanx! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Angie,

Steve said he sent Dennis e-mail a while ago with the name of the company who pays for pharmacists to do surveys. Did you ever get that?

For everyone else who wants to do surveys, and is not in the medical profession like Dennis, and either get paid or get points, these are some of the ones who I know are legit and can fix things if you have problems.

I know that Angie . . . unfortunately those folks can give all of you a bad name . . . just like some ultra liberal Democrats do to me. ;) And, believe me, as someone in the grocery business, I certainly know how about financial responsibility!
