The field trips are paid for by the school in the elementary grades, with some of that coming from the PTA. The PTA also helps with programs coming to the school. But, this was the first year the school had thier own fundraiser and would not let the PTA do theirs.

WOW!!! I never knew that schools covered some of those costs! Also what the fluff about the school not letting PTO do a fundraiser? :confused3

Also, Morketts, do you realize we will be there for the POTC3 Premier? Everything I have read is that if you don't want to wait for 12 hours to see the stars, the rides will be great...

DL is closed for a private event that day from what I saw on a release. I didn't think that the rides were open. :confused3

Or character breakfast on the 20th?

Let me know when you can start planning for 8/08. :) Kaitlyn is really hoping that you guys can join us for a few days in DL...along with the rest of us. It looks like we will be arriving 8/11. We want to spend a day in San Diego, a day in CAA, a day in DL. Todd's family will get there Thursday & we are talking about renting a 12 passenger van to tour the Hollywood stuff...you know for those of us who have never been there. DL on Friday. US on Saturday using the free shuttle that you can get when you buy the tickets online. ;)

John, it is easy to write an article, but very hard to put in the time, effort and emotions to help the kids day after day. Keep doing a good job.

HUGS

Very interesting article, John.

One question (and I realize this is a tiny part of the financial issue, but was just wondering): Did the districts cover field trips in the past? Here, parents pay for the field trips (museum admission, etc, at a group rate) and the PTO (fundraising) covers the bus costs. PTO also covers any low-income situations.

Devon hasn't had any field trips since we moved to MD over 5 years ago. They blame it on lack of funding and 9-11 scares. It sickens me to have all these education places around like the museums in DC or battlefield at Gettysburg, yet they can't take the kids.

Angie,

Steve said he sent Dennis e-mail a while ago with the name of the company who pays for pharmacists to do surveys. Did you ever get that?

For everyone else who wants to do surveys, and is not in the medical profession like Dennis, and either get paid or get points, these are some of the ones who I know are legit and can fix things if you have problems.

e-rewards
your2cents
survey sampling panel

let me know if you can't find them...

Thanks!

Kim

i'd love to get involved with some legit pay per survey companies....

My mom used to do it for one group out of Philly area when i was in hs...

I once got $20 to test chicken nuggets. Cool pocket change for an hour of my time.

Would you recommend any of the above....?

I'll have to ask him. I think he did not since he has not said anything. Probably to the alumni@usc.edu address, right? Would appreciate if Steve could resend.

The thing is, that when you look at this state to state, you have to compare all taxation . . . income tax, etc. Almost ALL taxes in Ohio (including our income tax) was originally passed to fund education. The same with our state lottery.

The politicians quoted in the paper are part of what they call here the "cave Man caucus" who don't give a hoot about public education. (they are very conservative Republicans - sorry Angie).

I liked the article. It sounds like you need some new legislature!

Good Morning!

Ahhhh Monday!

Here you can see what some of my local friends think of me!

That article was a personal attack that you must try not to take personally! I actually don't read much of our newspaper because there are always school board, administrator, and teacher bashing articles. The reporters don't know what it takes to run a school. Unfortunately, most parents and residents don't know either. Keep trying!

My favorite is surveyspot because you can get actual stuff instead of just points, but these 3 are all reputable and if you have any problems, I know the people who run them...

Last thing I heard is that they were closing at 6 p.m that day instead of midnight... So we should be ok early in the morning.

Kim

John, that letter gives me the stupidity headache. I get those when I know that nothing I say or do will change thier mind and it seems so obvious... Going to get excedrine now.

Kim

Thanks Kim for making me laugh, I needed that.

Thanks everyone else for the encouragement too. I often respond to people like this - FINE, vote me off the school board - my wife will THANK YOU! I bet they think it is like a JOB! It is work, but definitely NOT a job!

Some people who know me think I am insane to keep doing it!

So tell me, why is that?

Teachers, the school board, administrators . . . all used to be some of the most respected people in the community . . .

And no, I don't believe the blame all lies with the education community for the current perception. Some of it always does, but why are we ALL painted with that same brush? Lack of respect breeds on itself, and creates a snowball until none of us respect each other.

(off my soapbox now)

Honestly, I would be tempted to say WHY do you keep doing that...but I don't need to ask. I really do know the reason! It is for the benefits :rotfl: :rotfl: . Seriously, I know why you do it and I understand! Someone has to watch out for the kids.

My husband's theory for why....(he and I have discussed this in the past).

Most people really don't know what CEO's, chemists, wall street workers, business men in general, really do...so they can't hate what they don't know. Everyone went to school and they all "know" what teachers do. Many of them hated school as a kid so they continue with the hate. The rest he feels are just jealous. Anyway...

Exciting News.

Our good friends that we travel with and have gone to Disney with several times just returned on Sunday from a week at WDW. They had a "Dream" they each got the special Mickey Ears that you can't buy! They are so excited!!!!!
