OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Yes and no, the buses will leave if filled, but they also will leave after a period of time. I do not know exactly, but it always seems to be long time. (Note it is probably less than 15 minutes but invariably, I am the first one to walk up as a bus takes off )

I cannot speak too much about the All Star traffic, other than it should not take that long to get there. They do not use Osceola to get back and forth to the AllStars. It really depends on the intersection of Buena Vista and Osceola. If that backs up from the Epcot side, then it could take a bit.

I would not cut your ADR too tight. You never really know what race day will bring You may breeze right through the finish area, or at a 5:15 timeframe, it can take a while to get past the photo op line. I would allow an hour after your finish line crossing to get out of the finish line and family reunion area and then to get to the resort.

Bus related, it's also worth noting that the buses that I saw were coach style with a few steps to climb up (not a big deal) and then down (a big deal after being seated and being marathon stiff). Take it easy, and have a strong friend in front of you just in case you have a tumble.

That I do remember doing, as my DBF had to lift me on and off of buses for the remainder of that day and the next and will not let me forget it.

One way to reduce marathon stiffness is to walk around for a while once you're done. Let your legs cool down slowly and smoothly, not abruptly. Also, take an ice bath when you get back to your resort. 15-20 minutes in the tub will make a huge difference that night and the next day.

Coach,

After taking too much time off, i stopped for 3 weeks, for calves and achilles to heal am not sure how far to run this weekend. They seem to be doing a lot better. I have dropped my back to back runs. I did manage to do 12 miles last week on treadmill (easier on calves) the week before i did 9 on trail so calves hurt a bit after. I have done an 18 miler back in the beginning of Nov. How far should i try and go this weekend? 12 or 15? i was not thinking more than 15 since i did 9 and 12. I was also wondering if i should just do 12 since it is safe. What do you think do them on trail or treadmill?

Am nervous about the back to back. Am pretty sure i can finish the marathon but it wont be a PR. WIll try and run the half as hard as I can since i know marathon will be an issue because of the training regardless of how my calves feel.

Thanks

Kris

While a treadmill is boring, I think based on your post that it may be the safer alternative. I think I would shoot for 15 but give yourself permission before starting to bail at 12. Both of these will be beneficial in getting you through the marathon on Sunday.

Take time on Saturday after the half to walk around and keep your legs loose.

I echo the walk around for 30 minutes or so post run to help the legs to warm down. Even with that, you will find that siting for the 20-30 minutes it takes to get to the resort will create a little leg problem. Do not feel bad about backing down the bus steps. It's more secure and tells the world "I just ran a marathon"

More than likely, it will just be me going back to the resort. I have no problem being the last person off and taking my good sweet time going down those stairs :cutie:

I usually go down the stairs sideways but will give the backwards a try if I'm in a jam. Thanks for the advice on the timing for getting back to the resort after the race. I will make a later lunch ADR and see what happens.

Anyone watch "How I met your Mother"?

In one episode the guy that always wears a suit ran in the New York Marathon then road the subway home. When he got it he stop he couldn't move his legs, he had to call someone to come and get him. So know how that feels.

at this point i am praying for a miracle for my ankle to heal where i can at least walk fast. I hope this miracle would come on Christmas day. Just crossing my fingers here. Anyone walking on the 1/2 Marathon? Want some motivation to walk and get someone to push me with a hurt or not fully heal ankle.

I've been following this thread for several months as I've been training for the half (my first!). I've been on track with my training and felt very prepared for the race until yesterday when I started experiencing very sharp pain in my lower back. After some research I am pretty sure it's sciatica. It's painful when moving my left leg. I'm scheduled to do my last long run tomorrow (11 miles). I'm most likely skipping the run since I'm in pain, but any advice on running at all before the race?

If yesterday's long run was your longest then I would suggest running 16-18 next weekend. If you do not get there do not fret as you will most likely make the distance at the race, though you will need to play with the mental side of the run on race day.

Thanks Coach. I got up early this morning and ran 18 today. Temps were in the mid 20's so it was a little on the cold side and I fully expect to be wearing a lot less layers come race weekend. Did ok, and at a steady 11:20 pace using a 4:1 ratio. Legs feel good and now I feel a lot better about kicking back and enjoying the day tomorrow!

Merry Christmas to everyone. I hope those of you nursing injuries heal quickly. Everyone else, enjoy the holidays, your taper and the build up of excitement leading into race weekend!

I will be praying for you too! You have two weeks and I will pray that by New Years Eve, you will be celebrating your ability to complete your races! Hang in there!

Yes, the package offers bleacher seating at and near the finish. I think the packages are a great deal for those who may be mobility challenged.... Note that the seating is a reserved section but individual spots are not reserved. So getting there kind of early is better than arriving just in time.

Kind of. The finish line is in the Imagine parking lot. It is under a quarter mile from the monorail and bus stop... But it is across a parking lot. You may want to consider something to assist getting from transportation to the finish line.

Precisely, they are a set of porta potties that are reserved for package users.

Yes, the package price is per person. Again, I think in the case of your MIL this will be something that she would appreciate. I am not sure that the upper package is worth it as if I recall correctly, the runners retreat is the adder to the next lower package.

Note that is you are staying at an Epcot Resort you may do better by having her come out by the Atlantic Dance Hall to the beginning section of the YC. There are a few benches and if you coordinate vis phone, you should only have her out there for a short time. (

Hope this helps.

This does help a lot. I'm at my mother-in-law's this weekend and will be talking to her about this option. Might even get it for only part of the group to help defray the cost.

Skip the run if I am not too late. Find a sports massage and explain the feeling you are having. Look into a fox roller and google foam rolling back. Here is a decent link on general exercises and stretches.....

Thank you Rick. I need all the luck i could get cause this year has been one of the worse year of my life with all the health issues i have been having in the last couple of months. Havn't train at all and just wishing and hoping that i finish within time frame for the metal. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas!!!!

Hey there! I am definitely going to be walking most of the Marathon Relay. It can definitely be done! I had a knee injury just prior to the W&D half and I managed to get through that one! I met tons of great people along the course who kept me going! I am sure you will do the same!

Merry Christmas Everyone!!!
