OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

That looks like a lot of clothes. Unless the weather turns cold, looks like it has been warm in FL. Are you planning on carring fluid, or wearing a hat?
The last time I was down there for marathon weekend was in 2010. I wasn't running, but I think I'll forever remember how cold it was! I hope it's not as cold, and will probably take out some of the cold weather gear if it looks like I won't need it. I'm not carrying fluid for this race, and don't wear hats when I run.

If you are planning for cold (just in case), you might want to add some gloves to your list. Also, what about fueling (gels, etc), gear bag, bib belt/safety pins, music gear (if u use that), and sunscreen?

I forgot about the gloves! I just got some cheap pairs at Target as throw aways. My hands are always cold, even when it isn't that cold out, so I would be bummed to forget those! I think I'm going to pick up my gels at the expo. I tried to cram gels into my ziploc bag for the princess, and barely managed. I know I'll need more than what I can fit into a quart sized ziploc bag for the weekend. I'll definitely need safety pins, and sunscreen! Maybe I'll make a complete list and post for anyone that needs it because there are so many things to remember!

Commenting on the list... A third set of throw away clothing really is a waste. You can survive the 5k even in the throw down clothing.

Think top of head, ears and hands for a really cold morning. A couple 33 gallon yard bags are always nice. They can work for either a wind shell or a rain poncho. Just don't think you are going to run very far in one. I saw folks with them in 2010 coming into the finish and when they removed them, they were instantly chilled.

At the expo you can find Tyvek painters suits that are seamed so they can rip off on the run.

I usually have a couple pair of flannel warm up pants. If you use these, cut up the seams about a foot on each side so you can remove with shoes on.

Finally, Duct Tape. On a really cold morning taping the tops of your shoes where the mesh is can keep feet warm prerace.

About the Tyvek suits....they are probably significantly less expensive if you buy them at Home Depot or a paint store before you come to WDW, as opposed to Expo "Running Suit" prices. Seems like they were going for over $15 at the last expo or so? Heck, I got a whole track suit for $9.99 at Walmart the week before I went to WDW Goofy weekend in 2010, and ended up keeping the jacket for several races.

I actually started with 4 layers on top in 2010. And I think 2 on the bottom, but maybe 3. It was just darn cold. And 2 pairs of gloves...the cheap 2 pair for a dollar knit ones. Should have kept the 2nd pair on for the whole race. And 2 hats...
It's not so so much the while you are running part...it's the wait for the bus, and wait at the staging, and wait in the corral part, and then about 1 mile running and the clothes are coming off!

Thanks for the info. Between everyone in our family that is running, I think we'll have plenty to go around, so I'm sure whoever runs with him won't mind missing out on the bling.

Another question not related to the running part of the weekend, but the packing for the weekend part. Does anyone have a packing list that they've used in the past for Goofy or Dopey? I pulled out the duffel I plan to carry on with all my race stuff to pack for our Christmas trip, and then got the idea to pull out all my race stuff to see how it would fit. I got everything in, but feel like I probably missed some obvious things... The things I put in were
-3 race outfits including skirt, shirt, and undergarments
-3 sets of throw away clothes
-3 long sleeve tech shirts in case of cool weather
-3 pairs of arm warmers for cool/ warm weather
-5 pairs of compression socks/ calf sleeves
-2 running jackets to wear after the race while waiting for family to finish
-2 pairs of shoes
-10 bondibands (I don't really need that many, but I like to have my options :rotfl:)
- spibelt
-Garmin and charger
-body glide (any ideas if that has to go in my ziploc bag - I'm not sure if TSA will consider it a gel...?)

Is anything obvious missing from this list?

I would probably re-wear some of the clothing...either the throwdown clothes (if you don't need them---I agree with Coach that it isn't as necessary for the 5K), and definitely the arm warmers and compression sleeves.

As to your other post about getting gels at the expo....keep in mind that due to sponsorship deals or other factors, they may not have every brand of gel or shot block at the expo, so if you use something in particular that you have to have, consider bringing it.
and yes, if you fly with only carryons, your gels are subject to the 3-1-1 rules for gels and liquids. Shot blocks are not. And, it's ok to bring powdered sports drink mix in carryon or checked luggage.

AS FOR MY (sad, sad) training.... I suffered a severe glute/booty pull in my right cheek last weekend doing trapeze class. :sad2: Still can't run. Tried to do a little today...could shuffle/walk 1/4 mile in 4:05 or walk 1/4 mile in 4:25. That is not going to cut it! But got a massage and it has improved since Saturday, so fingers are crossed.

Well, I was supposed to do my long run this morning, but my three year old decided it was a good idea to get up at 2 am so I couldn't get out. Now I feel behind and am stressing about getting in another before tapering (I'm doing the 1/2) - it's hard working FT, the holidays and a toddler, KWIM?

I have to say though that this event is helping me in the holiday goodie department - I'm for the most part staying away from the cookies, etc. I made at home and here daily at work bc i don't want to gain any unneeded weight before this run - this goal is helping with that!

I'm only laughing because I skipped my morning run after my 3 year old decided to have a heart-to-heart at 2am.... :scared1:
I'm in a similar boat. Work FT, oldest child sent home with 102 fever, youngest child (age 3) is allergic to sleeping, holidays, running 1st full marathon. It IS super stressful. We do the best we can and accept that it's enough!

I definitely think I'll drop the third pair of throw aways. I was just tripling everything for the three races, but I'll probably just wear one of running jackets, then wash and re wear it after the longer races. Thanks for the tips about how to prepare throw aways for easy removal as well. If it's in the low 60's or cooler at the start I'll want something extra to keep warm with while waiting for the start.

As far as buying gels at the expo, I'm fine with both Gu and clif brand since I train with both. If anything I'll know that there are gels on the course if all else fails. I usually buy my sports beans at expos since I get them cheaper there than my local running store, but I might make a stop before I leave just so I know I have those.

Till this day, my left ankle is trying to heal and i am having 2nd thoughts of canceling the run cause its not getting any better. I tried to jog for a couple of feet and every time i hit the pavement it hurts. I am wearing compressions socks every day just to get the blood flowing. I can kinda walk but not for long cause then i feel the pain. Does anyone know what else i could do with this short period of time before the 1/2 starts? If not, i know that i can't get a return for the registration but can i transfer it to the wine and dine 1/2 for 2012?

I got gloves this past weekend at old navy - two pairs for $1. I used them for a race and they were great!

I agree Amanda! We should have called each other - I'm in schenectady, so we aren't too far apart! what was it with yesterday and 2 am? was there a full moon or something?

And now I think my husband gave me his cold - I was going to do my 10k on the treadmill but crapped out at 5k, just couldn't make it. I'm hoping if I am, it's going to go through fast and I'll aim to do the 10k on friday.

BTW, I just read your trip report from last year's 1/2 - great job! and I have no clue how you are being (a) a physician; (b) mother of three; and (c) full marathon. I'm an attorney with one kid and feel like I'm barely hanging on by my fingernails - kudos to you!

Do not run again until the half. Initially, it sounds counter intuitive and I know that you really want to try out the ankle to see if it is better. Don't. You may want to go for a short run on the first morning you are in WDW but other than that, take NSAIDs for pain and ice regularly.

On race morning, you will get further than you expect. Your training to date will carry you at least that far and any remaining miles are just not all that hard if you focus on getting to the next mile marker. If that is too far, then the next street light, road sign, crack in the road. Break it up as short as needed to keep the momentum moving forward.

Finally, on race day, if the ankle just does not want to work, then bail at an aid station.

Hang in there

I had a similar injury back this Summer. While I do not have any miracle cures, a couple other things to try...

First of all, if it is real bad, see a doctor. That aside, try some of the following...

Soak the foot and ankle in ice water. You can try holding ice on it, but I found taking a small trash can, filling it with ice water, and soaking on occasion to work much better. I still do this after "hard" runs.

Keep the foot elevated as much as possible. I work on a computer most of the day, so I used to sit with the foot elevated often.

Once in a while, lay on your back with your butt touching a wall. Let your legs go up the wall. This gives a nice stretch on the back of the legs. Do it for about 20 minutes. Your feet will kind of start going numb. Then get up. This essentially drains the "bad" blood and fluid. When you get up, you get a rush of new blood to help with healing.

As far as the race and training. Weight lifting helped me pass the time. Helps maintain some conditioning. If a bike or elliptical is an option, use it.

If there is no way to make it, contact runDisney and see what options they offer.

Good Luck.

I feel for you. I find out tomorrow if my "slim chance" of running the full is a 0% chance, due to a minor fracture in my ankle (dang volleyball). While the swelling is down, I can't run with a normal gait. If I can't run with my normal stride, I'm not going to even try the run due to the risk of a compensating injury. I like running too much to risk a larger injury.

I tried calling to do something with my registration, and didn't have any luck. You should at least call, maybe you'll get someone with some holiday magic!

So with just 2 weeks left until the Marathon my GF of 4 years left me. I walked into our apartment and with no warning or good bye all of her stuff was gone. I called her figuring I have been neglecting her while working many hours and training for this marathon. But she said she needed some space and for her mom to take care of her for a while.

We had reservations for the weekend, a room at the POP, now I cant find the motivation to train.

So sorry. Is anyone that you know going to WDW for the race? Or can you find some one to go with you and support you? This happened to my DD this year 3 days before the Princess, but she had me (mom) to go with her. It was a good time for us both. Hope yours turns out for the better too. Sending you pixie dust for healing.

The Disney Parks Blog has a cute video announcing the TOT Race is back (but is a 10 miler instead of 13K.) I mention the video because I think you can see what the tech shirts look like for the marathon weekend! I could be wrong - but Mickey gives Donald one for the half, the host one for the full, and of course, Goofy gets the Goofy shirt. Take a look and see what you think.

To all those nursing injuries, heartache, or emotional upheaval - hang in there! I hope everyone can still participate in the weekend. It's no fun having a setback - hope things work out!!

Probably not the best answer, but my half marathon PR for me came when I was angry about something. Things were not going right, I was afraid I was going to be distracted. Instead, I believe my anger on that day pushed me into a PR, by quite a bit. Nothing supplements an adrenaline rush like anger.

If you can play your emotions right, you could be in for a good run.
