OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Merry Christmas!!

Almost time! And my new long run distance (with some walking) is up to TWO miles! :cool1: :sad2: But...that's the best I have done since I hurt my booty last weekend. It IS getting better. Will be drawing on some major mental toughness for the race weekend.

Keep it up, everyone!

Holiday weight control tip:

Run to your relative's house for Christmas dinner!

My training schedule says I should be doing 12 miles today, but today being Christmas day and me a Dad with a 5 and 6 year old, time didn't allow for much beyond unwrapping, taking pictures, hours of toy assembly and electronics configuration, breaking up the odd fight over who gets to play with what new toy...

When it came time to go to my parents house for Christmas dinner I put on my running shoes and met my family over there. They live pretty close so I added some extra distance and hills, coming out to 10 miles. I showered at their house, changed, then dove into the turkey dinner. It wasn't the 12 miles I was supposed to do, but certainly better than I thought I would do today.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night.

Betsy Hope every day brings a 2 mile improvement in your condition. That way, you'll be up to 26 by the time race day rolls around.

Fellowship9798 Good for you. MOre important than the 2 miles that you didn't run is the fact that you found a way to get out the door and do those 10.

As for me, I bagged my 12 miler til today. (Like 20 minutes or so from now). But it will occur at some point soon.

BTW, I just read your trip report from last year's 1/2 - great job! and I have no clue how you are being (a) a physician; (b) mother of three; and (c) full marathon. I'm an attorney with one kid and feel like I'm barely hanging on by my fingernails - kudos to you!

You're too kind! After years of never having "me" time I realized that my DH supports exercise differently from other types of me time. I've learned to use that to my advantage! :lmao:

I also need injury advice. My left calf has been troubling me since my 20 miler a few weeks ago. At that point it just felt tight. I cut back on my running. 2 weeks later I did 15 miles. Around mile 8 the calf felt tight again. By mile 9 it was hurting. I took longer walk breaks and cut the distance to 15 miles. I took another easy week. Stupidly on Thursday and did a race pace run/walk. The first 20 min were great and then the calf started hurting. On Saturday I walked 6 miles and the calf was bothering me all day. Today it just feels tight but doesn't hurt.
Do I quit all running until race day? Take it easy all week and try to walk a few miles next weekend? This is my 1st marathon so I'm nervous about finishing. I'm a Galloway girl so I do run/walk anyway. Even at its worst, I definitely could have run thru the pain (say on race day) but obviously that would be foolish at this point....

Thanks! I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!!M

Amanda I would tend to give it a rest. Maybe do some XT if you feel the need. But with 1-1/2 weeks to go there is no down side to resting. When I ran my first full at WDW, I took most of the last 3 weeks off to try and rest my ITB. It's more important to rest it and maybe do some light stretching.

A couple things I forgot to mention. I'm sure you don't need to stop running entirely, just keep your runs to easier, shorter walks/runs until race day. and when walking, try not to overstride. Hope this helps!

Sorry if this has been asked before, but...

1) How many people are in each corral roughly?

2) How long does it take each corral to be released?

3) DH and I are new runners. When I signed us up, DH's expected finish time was 2:15 and mine was 3:00. We intended to do a 10K in the fall to get proof of time for him, but we had to cancel. Since he has no proof of time, he has been placed way at the back (his bib number is in the 50,000s while mine is in the 41,000s). We want to start together, but we are both running way under our original estimates and would rather not start with the walkers.

So, for the actual question: How difficult will it be to get him moved up into the 3:00 corral with me at the expo?

You won't be able to move him up without a proof of time, I don't think, unless someone takes pity on you.

I agree with Maura... rest, ice, elevation and compression. Well maybe heat at this point since is is a few weeks out.

Grab a foam roller from Target and roll the muscle. Concentrate on the point where it early hurts. Look into compression socks for race day. They are pricy but the compression will help support the muscle and keep blood from pooling post run.

1)about 3000 per corral in the half
2) I think about 5-8 minutes. The waves actually run out faster than listed in the final instructions. (or it feels faster)
3) without a 10k as a proof of time you will need to move back with him. a 5k is not going to be accepted.

ADDED - If you push to the front of his wave, you will not be too encumbered due to the separation of the waves. Once on World Dr it opens up. Actually, you will feel the same effects in the 3 hour corral as the 3:30 corral

I was confused because you said you had no proof of time :)

The Run Disney site said they will only accept proof of time from 10K or higher. I figured they would't use our 5K times, so I never submitted them.

Has anyone gotten 5K times accepted?

5-8 min isn't too bad. Thanks for the info everyone.

You are correct, a 5k time is not going to be accepted.

Just move back to his spot, move to the very front of your corral, and stay course center in single file for the first 1.5 miles. You will find it not so crowded there. Once over the overpass move course left as the course bends right... you will then be the first to see the course open up wide once out of the turn

Thank you everyone for the advice! I got compression socks and a roller for Christmas. I will try to be a good girl and rest it! :thumbsup2
