OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

The Disney Parks Blog has a cute video announcing the TOT Race is back (but is a 10 miler instead of 13K.) I mention the video because I think you can see what the tech shirts look like for the marathon weekend! I could be wrong - but Mickey gives Donald one for the half, the host one for the full, and of course, Goofy gets the Goofy shirt. Take a look and see what you think.

To all those nursing injuries, heartache, or emotional upheaval - hang in there! I hope everyone can still participate in the weekend. It's no fun having a setback - hope things work out!!

I like that the shirts are in color this year. I'll probably still be tempted to get an "I did it" shirt, but these shirts do look nice!

So with just 2 weeks left until the Marathon my GF of 4 years left me. I walked into our apartment and with no warning or good bye all of her stuff was gone. I called her figuring I have been neglecting her while working many hours and training for this marathon. But she said she needed some space and for her mom to take care of her for a while.

We had reservations for the weekend, a room at the POP, now I cant find the motivation to train.

 I am so sorry for what you must be going through, and I pray that it gets better. Don't worry about training now, take care of yourself mentally and physically. The majority of your training is done, even if you don't run a step until the marathon you'll still be fine.

Come to Disney and run the race - my best race happened when the rest of my life had gone to pieces

YOU CAN DO IT!:cheer2:

Fortunately (?) though it might not feel like it, the hard part of the training cycle is over - you could go into race day not running a step and you'd probably be ready and well rested to boot. But if you can get out there and do some lighter running between now and then, it would do you some good both mentally and physically.

Thanks everyone. I did try to run a 4 miler yesterday, felt pain in my chest, a high anxiety. It turned out to be a 2 mile walk instead.

I said to her, "are we still going to Disney?" and she asked me if one of my friends can go instead to support me. Hurts bad.

Hang in there guy. It's been a long time since I had to go through something like this but I do know that you will be better for making it through. Who knows you may find your true princess at the race!

I like the fact that the design changed this year. We went through a 3-4 year period with only a date change on the shirt. Though I do wish that the Goofy shirt was not the white one. Regardless, I never wear Disney race shirts since Champion became a sponsor of the race. I find the fit off (still true to size but things like collars cut funny, sleeves short or differing lengths, etc).

These are so much better than the early times when I ran. One of the first events I had a baby $4!7 yellowy brown color. The desgins were just terrible on freebies while the marketed shirts were really cool. One of my favorite marketed shirts is from the 04 race. On the back it says "RUNNING SHOES MANDATORY, MOUSE EARS OPTIONAL" with a small set of ears hanging off to the side.

Oh, I'm so sorry. Keep running, though. You'll need that exercise to help with your emotions. My warmest thoughts are with you at this awful time. Keep your chin up.

I wish they had separate shirts for men and women. I've been to races where you could get a women's shirt, and they fit sooooo much better!

I'm tempted after the Goofy to take some of my race tech shirts to a seamstress to get them tailored to fit properly. (I'd give it a go myself if I thought I could (a) make them look good, and (b) get the seams right so they aren't likely to chafe.)

I am so sorry. I can't imagine how that must feel. Come on down to Disney and we will do our best to cheer you up!

Do not run again until the half. Initially, it sounds counter intuitive and I know that you really want to try out the ankle to see if it is better. Don't. You may want to go for a short run on the first morning you are in WDW but other than that, take NSAIDs for pain and ice regularly.

On race morning, you will get further than you expect. Your training to date will carry you at least that far and any remaining miles are just not all that hard if you focus on getting to the next mile marker. If that is too far, then the next street light, road sign, crack in the road. Break it up as short as needed to keep the momentum moving forward.

Finally, on race day, if the ankle just does not want to work, then bail at an aid station.

Hang in there

Thank you for the tips. The funny thing is that i havn't been training ever since the wine and dine run back in october. I started to train the beginning of november for a 4 miles run and a couple of days later the ankle started to hurt. I did go to the doctor and the doctor said i got ligament and tendon em balanced issues. From then on it improved from swelling to normal but still having stiffness. I tried to make normal strides but the pain is still there. I have been wearing the compression socks every day to see if that improves. I am also trying to ice it when i get a chance. I am wondering if i do the race would my ankle gets worser? Left ankle is stiff as of now and trying to rotate it when i get a chance to loosen it up. While rotating i feel and hear it cracking every once in a while. Just depressed that this has happen.

I had a similar injury back this Summer. While I do not have any miracle cures, a couple other things to try...

First of all, if it is real bad, see a doctor. That aside, try some of the following...

Soak the foot and ankle in ice water. You can try holding ice on it, but I found taking a small trash can, filling it with ice water, and soaking on occasion to work much better. I still do this after "hard" runs.

Keep the foot elevated as much as possible. I work on a computer most of the day, so I used to sit with the foot elevated often.

Once in a while, lay on your back with your butt touching a wall. Let your legs go up the wall. This gives a nice stretch on the back of the legs. Do it for about 20 minutes. Your feet will kind of start going numb. Then get up. This essentially drains the "bad" blood and fluid. When you get up, you get a rush of new blood to help with healing.

As far as the race and training. Weight lifting helped me pass the time. Helps maintain some conditioning. If a bike or elliptical is an option, use it.

If there is no way to make it, contact runDisney and see what options they offer.

Good Luck.

thank you for the recommendations. I tried the foot elevation with the but against the wall last night. I dont feel the difference but will do it twice a night. The weight lifting is a maybe cause i also injured my left wrist tendon and has been 4 months now since i have been to the gym lifting anything. I just hope i am ok by Christmas and start to feel confident at least walk the 1/2. good thing is that the swelling is gone. thanks

Does anyone have experience with these? My 85-year-old mother-in-law cannot walk very well and she will be coming out to see me race and finish. Will the seating be helpful to her? Is it difficult to access? What do they mean by private restroom? Is that just a private bank of portalets? Just trying to decide if it is worth the price. Is the Cheer price per person? Thanks!

My runs have been all fouled up this week. After the 20 last Saturday it should be 5, 3, 10. I've done 3 and 6. Don't know what I'll get in this weekend. We have to drive and celebrate Saturday. We have to worship and celebrate Sunday. I hope to run between mass and celebrating. Weather Sunday looks good and the partying doesn't start until mid-afternoon. No problem! Traffic should be non-existant, too.

Simba - hang in there. I agree with a PP, there can be value in running mad/hurt.

Yea red! Excited about this year's shirt. Getting excited about the trip. We're not there very long, but packing a lot in. WISHES dessert party will be the highlight!

I'm feeling pretty healthy. I had a cold a month ago and am now washing my hands a LOT. Hand sanitizer sitting on my desk, too. I've NEVER done that. Tops of my feet hurt, but they did that last spring and just need some tapering. Trying to arrive healthy ; ) To everyone nursing injuries take it easy and trust your training. We can do this.

Till this day, my left ankle is trying to heal and i am having 2nd thoughts of canceling the run cause its not getting any better. I tried to jog for a couple of feet and every time i hit the pavement it hurts. I am wearing compressions socks every day just to get the blood flowing. I can kinda walk but not for long cause then i feel the pain. Does anyone know what else i could do with this short period of time before the 1/2 starts? If not, i know that i can't get a return for the registration but can i transfer it to the wine and dine 1/2 for 2012?

The folks at KT tape will be at the expo. They helped get me through the Vegas 1/2. You could give them a try.

Yes, the package offers bleacher seating at and near the finish. I think the packages are a great deal for those who may be mobility challenged.... Note that the seating is a reserved section but individual spots are not reserved. So getting there kind of early is better than arriving just in time.

Is it difficult to access?

Kind of. The finish line is in the Imagine parking lot. It is under a quarter mile from the monorail and bus stop... But it is across a parking lot. You may want to consider something to assist getting from transportation to the finish line.

What do they mean by private restroom? Is that just a private bank of portalets?

Precisely, they are a set of porta potties that are reserved for package users.

Just trying to decide if it is worth the price. Is the Cheer price per person? Thanks!

Yes, the package price is per person. Again, I think in the case of your MIL this will be something that she would appreciate. I am not sure that the upper package is worth it as if I recall correctly, the runners retreat is the adder to the next lower package.

Note that is you are staying at an Epcot Resort you may do better by having her come out by the Atlantic Dance Hall to the beginning section of the YC. There are a few benches and if you coordinate vis phone, you should only have her out there for a short time. (

Hope this helps.

I hate hearing about all these injuries...

I really hope everyone can recover fast. Hang in there.

Quick transporation question ... After the races, how often to the buses back to the resorts come by to pick up people? Is it every 15-20 minutes? Do the drivers wait until the buses are full before leaving? If I finish the full between 5-5:30, will the traffic back to Pop be really bad? I haven't used the buses after a race before so I just wanted to get an idea of the timing so that I could make a lunch ADR.

From what I remember, they send the buses off as soon as they're full so it could be a hit or a miss with an ADR. I honestly don't remember the traffic being bad, but I was only going to Beach Club.

But this is only my memory speaking, and I forgot miles 10-21 completely...
