OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

I don't remember anyone other than cast members in AK when I went through. In DHS it was mostly cast members other than one table handing out candy I think. By that time I was pretty much just concentrating on finishing so I wasn't paying that close of attention. I was through all the parks pre-opening I think too which I'm sure makes a difference.

'Cause you're faster! :goodvibes
Plenty of people in DHS at least, and some in AK, for the 5-7 hour crowd. Let's see...I did the marathon in 6 hours last time (but was nursing stress reaction in my foot...not that I'll be much faster anyway). But then...I was sort of hurting and zoned out in DHS. And it was so flippin' cold (2010) that I felt worse for the spectators than for us.

Nancy....2 or 3 margaritas is fine...I'll take 3 since I'll do the Dopey again! We'll definitely be in touch on this! Too much fun!

Your peeps may get to watch from AK and then the finish...
OR...maybe watch from by the Grand Floridian...then outside of DHS? but then, you'd get to the finish too fast for them to be there.

There is so much going on...DJs, the parks, other runners...you won't get too lonely or feel unsupported. The long stretch after AK...towards WWOS...I think is the toughest, because it is just one long road, but it seemed to go fairly quick last time I did it. Also...a few spectators with cars manage to get out on that road somewhere (no idea where they park) and cheer.

so my "absolutely, no way" stance on 2012 is slowly changing to a "maybe i should think about it after all" for the full

folks up here in the northeast - how bad is it to train for the full in the late fall/early winter? i feel like the bulk of the miles will fall in november-mid dec and you end up tapering before christmas anyways....the weather won't be quite so brutal then especially if you do your long runs in the middle of the day, right? or maybe i'm just deluding myself. i have trouble with running in temps below the 30s...but running 20, even 16, miles on a treadmill would really, really suck.

My wife and I ran our first marathon and Disney race this January. We trained in Syracuse NY. The snowiest city in north america with 100,000 or more people. A tread mill helps. So does having good winter running gear like a hat, gloves, under armour, wind proof jacket. Most of all, a desire to suceed. After running in that past December and start of January, I have the confidence to run in just about any conditions. It was funny to read southerners comments about how cold 32 degrees was for the marathon back in 2010.
Best of luck and hope to see you there in 2012 when I'm on to my first goofy challenge.

i was just looking at the spectator tool that rundisney's site has. looks like the viewing locations are really in the first half and then at the end. um, yeah, so....is there anyone in AK and DHS cheering for you? the tool doesn't really offer how to get to AK and DHS except to say that if you want to see runner's there you should do that park.

i am actually going to have people cheering for me at the full and i feel like the second half is where i'm really gonna need it. you know, at the "wall"!

My friend and I were in AK cheering on the marathoners this year. We were by Expedition Everest and it was a great spot to be! We had so much fun cheering the runners on. (And so many runners were generous enough to congratulate us on the half (we had our medals on) as they ran by!!) It was also fun to see some of the runners decide to ride EE! LOL! How cool is that to be able to say you rode a roller coaster during a marathon?!

Anyway, there weren't a ton of people there cheering in AK but there were some, and some great CM's.

Ah, HoCo, my once and future home (lived there as a kid, will move back there some day). The only comfort for weather worries is to know that statistically, our snowiest month in the midatlantic is February. Last year's storms were a probably once in a lifetime anomaly (as much as it kills me to say that as a snowlover). And shoveling is great cross training!

I did the Shamrock Race today too! I finished in about 27 minutes, which was a full minute PR for me! My birthday is St. Patty's Day, so it's an early birthday present to myself!

Awesome!! Great job! :goodvibes

fyi, i was poking around on the site, and caught this under the race retreat page...

"Race Retreat packages will be available for purchase March 15, 2011"

so i guess this year they are letting you register for the retreat while you do your race registration

Ok, cool! I didn't even notice it.

I was able to register for the half just now using the Chase Disney Visa discount link. Now I have to decide about the 5K and the new relay!! I'd love to earn 3 medals that weekend, one of them commemorative and one of them inaugural!

You can ride EE during the full marathon?!?! That would be so awesome!

Yes I know, isn't that so cool?! It was funny, at one point there was a group of three runners, a man and two women. The man and one woman were all ready to get right on EE, but the other woman was hesitant...she was afraid of the ride. They said, "c'mon, let's do it!" And I gave her some encouragement to go for it too. She went! It was fun and inspiring to see someone not only doing a marathon, but also conquering a fear! :)

That's so cool! I definitely want to do that. Is there a line at all, or can you jump right on?

They had the runners go through the Fast Pass line! :) Though there wasn't much of a line at that time anyway. But still, nice that they could skip it.

If only that would work for TSM! But I don't think we run exactly by it, like we do EE.:rotfl:

I'm in the full marathon 2012 here I come!!! It's my first marathon ever... I can't believe I'm doing this but, so excited!

For the people who are saying they are already registered, is this a Disney Visa thing?

That's how i registered was thru the Disney Visa website. I read on FB that others are signed up but not sure if it's thru Visa or thru the regular Disney link. Give it a try.

I'm doing the Full too! Officially in!!

I contemplated the Goofy...but this will be my first Full, and I want it to be special! If that makes sense!

This is totally stressing me out. I need my payment to my credit card to go through before I can register. I'm terrified that this is going to sell out before tomorrow.
