OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

I am registering tomorrow after the money I deposited in the bank goes into the account. I'm going goofy, training is well under way and currently going for time improvements, I know I can do the distance with a run/walk and mostly walk for the half. I walk nearly 10 miles every weekend and do a long training run as well, EPCOT keeps your legs moving good and keeps you in good shape, especially when I have to dodge the slower walkers (I walk rather fast, 12-13 mm). :rotfl:

Should - with 28,000 half slots it will take a couple weeks, I would think. The relay is the great unknown. Slots are limited. 10 years ago we were still operating partially on paper entry forms - thus the %full indicator did not exist.

I would look at the website Friday AM and Monday afternoon. If it goes off the scale, it should start registering on the indicator soon.

So there's 28,000 spots in the half or is that an educated/experienced guess? I don't think I realized just how big that event was!

I'll definitely follow your advice and keep an eye on it. I assume that (given enough notice to runDisney) if they can, they will indicate if the relay goes beyond 50% but I won't wait on it any longer than I have to.

Thanks!

My friend Carissa (carissanboys) and I are doing the relay! yay! But we both have a lot to learn about how relays work! Here are some questions we have if anyone knows:

The Start. Do both of us have to arrive to the start area at the same time? Or can the second runner sleep longer and arrive later?

Medals. When do we get them? After each of our legs or both at the end?

Exchange. Is there anything we have to pass between each other at that point? Do we each have a shoe tag or is there a different kind of timer for relays?

Thanks!

Regarding the start, I don't think the second runner can sleep in. If anything, they need to be on the shuttle bus way before the race starts.

Also, you will both have a shoe tag.

I'm so tempted to register for the Goofy right now but the plan all along has been to see how I feel after my first marathon this Sunday - assuming I will need to get through the I-am-never-doing-that-again phase to the oh-it-wasn't-that-bad stage before I'm ready to pull the trigger.

I was talking with the management folks at runDisney... 28,000 for the half, 20,000 Full, and 2,000 Relay teams (4,000 folks). 5,500 Goofies are included in the half and full allotment.

First year I ran the half and full together were 17,000, i think

Based on my experience at the Wine & Dine relay, this is what I think:

The Start. Do both of us have to arrive to the start area at the same time? Or can the second runner sleep longer and arrive later? Both of us had to be at the start, and the 2nd runner was bused to the exchange zone. Since the relay is near the TTC, I could see it being possible that a runner could get there instead of going to the start, but it would be risky to try since it's an inaugural event. You may not being able to get to the relay exchange area if you don't take the bus. There was no check in for us to make sure both runners were at the start, but we also couldn't have gotten to the exchange zone any way besides a bus.

Medals. When do we get them? After each of our legs or both at the end? Each runner gets their medal after they finish their leg of the race.

Exchange. Is there anything we have to pass between each other at that point? Do we each have a shoe tag or is there a different kind of timer for relays? there is no baton like a typical relay, you simply 'tag' off and go. Once the first runner passes the timing mats, the second runner can cross the next set of timing mats, so technically you don't have to wait to tag your relay partner. As long as you see them pass the timing mats before you go, you should be fine. Disney has their timing d-tags (I think that's what their called...) attached to the bibs. Each runner will get an individual time, then you will get a combined time for your team.

Ok, I have a question for the veterans. Is it possible to get the half done and get back to the room in time to shower before 11 check-out? I'd like to fly home that night but really don't want to after running 13 mi without a shower. This will be my first half but I'm doing a 10K in Sept so hopefully I won't be too far back.

Any input would be appreciated!

I guess that's a possibility if you remember to give your bag to the first runner.

There was a bag check at the exchange zone, and since the bag retrieval area at wine & dine was a nightmare, it worked out great that I checked our bag at the exchange point, and my partner picked it up when she finished.

That works if you only have one bag for both of you.

I did, in both January and for the Princess. I am not a speed demon either, around 3 hours for my finish. I didn't lounge in the shower and I had all my luggage ready to go, but I was able to go back to the room, get cleaned up and feel really refreshed.

I found the bag check bags to be generous in size. We both fit a change of clothes in our bag, and had a ton or room left. You do have to have a partner who is willing to tote your stuff around while you run though. I threw my park bag into our checked bag last minute since I knew we'd be walking around epcot after the race, and that made the bag a lot heavier. I felt bad knowing I'd made her tote my stuff around for an hour and a half while I ran:rotfl:

Has anyone heard if the relay will be set up in that one can be waiting with kids at the swap and then the first runner can take over with the kids? If I can get confirmation on this I'm gonna sign us up!

Disney is working on the transportation details for the relay. I am guessing that we will not have firm answers on the exact logistics until late summer/early fall. I would bet that you could walk over from TTC, if one were there early enough. It can be a tough walk upstream from the TTC through the tramway tunnel on race day morning due to all the spectators lining the narrow pathway. I am assuming, based on the language on runDisney that one may be able to head directly to the relay point from the resort. ((Charles’ Assumption)) Do not count on that until you read it on the website.

After thinking, I am guessing that the relay area will be a runner's only area, similar to the area after the gear check tents. That would preclude having friends/family in the area. I do not have an official word on this but if you think about controlling a crowd, getting runners 1 and 2 paired up and the logistics of bag handling, one would not want non-essential folks in the area.

Relays are electronic. The exchange point is near the entrance to the MK Pluto Lot off of Floridian. More details to follow on the exact set up. The final question and I am sure some W&D folks will correct me if incorrect; I think Runner 1 will get their medal at the relay end. The logistics of waiting until Epcot would be huge in my mind. I think that is the way W&D did it…. I would assume they will follow that procedure.

For the relay, I wonder if you can skip the shuttle and just go to the TTC?

Here is your timeline - last runner to cross the line , around 6:10. Finish 9:40... Out of the finish area 10:10 ... to the room 10:40 ... out of the room 11.

More likely scenario would have you complete well in advance of the check out time.

I stayed off property for the Princess at the Rosen Inn. Amazing $69 room. Thank you Expedia. I just asked for a late checkout. They gave me 12noon with no extra charge. It was great getting a shower before heading out to Fuddruckers for a gigantic burger and then hitting the road for an hour drive home.

We stayed at the BW during the princess last month, and we showered, checked out, and were in Epcot by 10:30 that morning. I was surprised at the transportation back to the resorts after the race. I literally got on a bus, and was at the hotel less than 20 minutes later.

That is good to know as that will probably be my first day in the parks.

I don't know if that is the case for marathon weekend since all the resorts provide transportation, but it was nice only waiting a short time, and even nicer that they had a nice air conditioned charter bus waiting when we walked up. Our bus wasn't full when we left, so I think another bus going to the YC/BC and BW was pulling up to park for awhile. I hope they do the same thing in January!
