The Good, the Bad, the Ugly of Your Dog's Breed

My dogs: 2 English Shepherds (picture a black and white border collie)

The good: Freaky intelligence, rule followers, alerts me to unlocked night door, oven light left on, ignored pot on cookstove, intense focus on me, wants to be with me 24/7, touching me, staring at me, following me, looks like a painting so beautiful

The bad: Attracts a lot of attention from strangers, so aware of surroundings will bark or huff at silent kitten sitting in street in front of house, gets upset if feed time is different, anything is different, some house rule didn't get followed. Can't go to dog parks due to need to police other dogs' misbehavior

The ugly: The amount of hair shed would clothe every naked child in the world (one week's worth of shed) Master World Champion shedder. (but worth it)

beautiful dog

I have two great danes.
Good: Amazing personalities, fun, happy, giant goof balls
Bad: They will sit on everything and anything
Ugly: Their stomachs. They have the most sensitive stomachs. Even just an extra 1/4 cup food turns to raging diarrhea. have tried every trick in the book of pumpkin, rice, chicken, etc. NOPE. Doesn't work. So they tend to have icky butts I have to wipe.

ugh, the sensitive stomach would be stressful, I'm sorry that happens

We have a Snorkie which is a Miniature Schnauzer and Yorkshire Terrier mix. She is the most wonderful dog we have ever had. She was a 9year old rescue. She never sheds which is nice. Her hair grows quickly so she has to be groomed more often.

She never leaves the yard which we have never had a dog we could trust not to leave if somebody left the gate open. I am a shut in and fell yesterday and she never left my side and when someone came to help me, she barked so they would find us.

what a sweetheart to stay by your side, I hope you are ok!

I have two dogs. A female cocker spaniel and a male cockapoo.

cocker spaniel:
good - sweet as sugar, amazing family dog, loyal AF, beautiful, healthy, smart, just lovely.
bad - she likes to bark. her farts smell like death.
ugly - cockers are amazing at making weird little growths on themselves. Hers have been benign but it seems like as soon as we get one removed, another pops up.

cockapoo:
good - perhaps from the poodle side but he is the smartest dog we have had, very fast to pick up tricks and training. Doesn't shed at all.
bad - his health. He's only 3 and he's already cost us a fortune in vet bills. Immune mediated thrombocytopenia, something poodles are more likely to suffer from, he needs daily medication and regular blood work to monitor so he doesn't bleed to death. And then this past weekend he suffered another poodle related illness, IVDD, and now he's paralyzed in his hind legs. Hoping he can come home tomorrow and we will get him a doggie wheelchair and just start calling him and our other dog "wheels and the leg woman".
the ugly - the barking! OMG I love him but he never shuts up. Mostly when he sees the neighbors dog outside. He really dislikes the neighbor's dog.

We have a muppet-y looking mix. Best guess is Whippet/Dachshund/Terrier. Perhaps a bit of house-elf thrown into the mix as well.

The Good: He's a GOON & has a great sense of humor. He's smart. He's a total mumma's boy. He is the cuddliest and LOVES to sleep. You literally have to wake him up in the morning. He's FAST and LOVES a good run on the beach. He's super easy to clean. Bath time lasts about 7 minutes and he dries quickly. He's not a big eater (unless it's cat food or people food). He's a perfect size. About 25 lbs and doesn't take up too much room while sleeping in between us (head on pillow and all). He's great in the car! We take him wherever we can. He's really good with kids and dials his energy back when little ones are around.

The Bad: Him. He's bad! As in NAUGHTY. He's my first dog and I clearly had no idea that I was creating a spoiled, naughty monster. He was a handful as a puppy. At 4yo his energy level has gone way down and he's a lot easier to manage. But if he isn't getting your attention he will find the nearest roll of toilet paper or pen and start frolicking around the house with it. He will steal food if given ANY opportunity. "Burt-proofing" the kitchen is the first place we do anywhere we go. He will wait however long (10 mins, 45 mins, 2 hours) for his opportunity to take it.

The Ugly: the BARKING! Drives me CRAZY. He's very protective of me and where we live. We have been working on "quiet" and using a squirt bottle which is actually helping a lot. His CRAZY greetings when I come home; when I walk into a room; when I come back from the bathroom. Sighhhhhh...apparently this is a Whippet trait.

I love him though and he makes me smile and laugh no matter what is going on. If we ever have another dog some day (years from now since Burton will live until he's 48!) I will def. not create such a spoiled monster.

Shichon- ****zhu and a bichon mix

The good- she rarely barks, is super sweet, very cuddly, doesn’t shed, sleeps in on weekends, loves everybody she meets both people and animals. Doesn’t require long walks but can do 2-3 miles if we want her to.

Bad- sometimes runs away when we let her off leash to play with the neighborhood dogs (we need to train her better) and she needs to be brushed and groomed pretty frequently. She also will not go the bathroom in our yard so we always have to walk her.

that SMILE!!

Beagle/Cavalier King Charles Spaniel mix (I'll be honest, I'm copying a few of these from PP who have beagles/beagle mixes...because my guy is much the same)

Good: Incredibly loyal and sweet. Lap dog who loves to cuddle with us. Very smart and enjoys training. Does great in the crate (actually loves going into his crate). Really great at sticking to a schedule, but will go with the flow oddly well if we need to change something.

Bad: Not super destructive, but if he's able to get to paper/Kleenex/paper towels, look out (somehow he has not yet destroyed any super important papers). He is SO STUBBORN! He *knows* how we want him to behave, but if he doesn't feel like behaving that way, he just doesn't do it. Health-wise, he has done pretty well with a few exceptions: he does have a pretty sensitive stomach and has an intestinal condition that he needs daily medication for (not at all expensive, costs us less than $100 per year, and not difficult to give to him), but he is a puppy mill rescue and our vet thinks it's something he picked up in the mill and will just have for life, so I don't think that is breed-specific (though I know Cavaliers are prone to diarrhea). He seems to be somewhat prone to ear infections (those big floppy beagle ears), he gets maybe 2-3 infections per year. And from the Cavalier side, we need to be extra on top of brushing his teeth. He just broke a tooth on a toy and we had to pay to get that extracted, but we knew that tooth was dicey from our very first vet appointment when we adopted him.

The Ugly: He barks...and he is LOUD. SO LOUD. So much sound out of a little body. He barks at people walking by the house, but the big problem is how he barks at people that are *in* the house. It's clear that he's scared of strangers (in and out of the house) and wants anyone that is not me or my husband to get out. He seems to have endless energy when it comes to barking at visitors. He's a puppy mill rescue, so I think it definitely is due to his time in the puppy mill before we adopted him. :( I just hate hate hate that he is so scared of people coming to the house. This is something we're working on that we thought he'd grow out of...I wish we'd known better when we adopted him, because we would have starting addressing this with our current trainer right away.

He's not perfect, but we love our little guy soooo much and cannot imagine life without him! :lovestruc

YES! My beagle is good with leaving pretty much anything out now except for paper products!!!! He cannot help himself it seems. Being sick and needing Kleenex around him is the worst, I just want to be able to be sick without having to worry about the great tissue caper!

We have a German Shepherd. He’s a great family dog and the 3rd GSD we have had ( first two were rescues). We got him as a puppy from a couple who have search and rescue dogs; their oldest was retiring so they bred their younger female to replenish their working dogs as well as provide S&R dogs for another individual. Griswald doesn’t have the drive and was offered as a family pet and we jumped on welcoming him into our family.

Good: He is very tuned into his family and always up for anything his people are doing, yard work, swimming, hiking, watching tv in the evenings. He is well socialized, but will turn on the protective response if someone/thing seems off. Griz is very smart and easy to train (Good and bad tricks).

Bad: ugh the shedding! Thankfully it’s really only at its worst twice a year. He has a sensitive tummy, which is common for the breed. He is also the biggest wimp, which is also common for large male dogs according to our vet.

The pup is a mix of several things, but primarily Beagle and Lab. The internets tell me this makes her a Begador. Whatever.

Good: She's smart, sweet, playful and athletic.

Bad: She needs significant exercise (both physical and mental) or she becomes destuctive. I've had to put her in agility classes just to give her something to do with her mind. She is a bolter and, if she gets free, uncatchable. She learns quickly and generally obeys....inside the house. Once she's outside, all bets are off. She's got a bit of guard dog in her, too, which can be a bit difficult to deal with. She has trouble warming up to men she has not yet met (women and children are fine).

Just out of curiosity, I'm wondering how much it costs to feed them every month? Keep in mind I had a small 35 pound dog for 15 years and we bought him a new bag of dog food maybe every 6 weeks.

OMG that's the cutest dog ever!!!!

^ The one thing I don’t miss about my GSDs is the shedding!

The Cairn Terrier

CB79C724-3EE4-4D5C-A1C5-C988832C8A29.jpeg

The Good:
- Great family dog, smart, friendly, funny, rugged, watchful.
- Awesome companion.
- And no shedding.

The Bad:
- Grooming is challenging. We keep his coat natural and it’s a lot of work.
- They also can be difficult to train, but he’s pretty good because we’ve spent a lot of time with him.

Funny, but true, lol:

il_fullxfull.1032243512_e53m.jpg

The Ugly:
- If he takes off, it’s hard to get him back. This is a Cairn trait. We try to avoid it at all costs!
- As terriers bred to hunt vermin, they are obsessed with small animals in the yard.

As our first dog that isn’t a German Shepherd, he had some very big shoes to fill, and he has. We love him to pieces!

Right?? It’s ridiculous...he’d eat an entire box if we let him. :rolleyes2

Dixie Belle. 10 year old Black and Tan Dachshund

Good: Minds very well and actually answers us by shaking her head yes and no. Great with our 2 girls. She lets them play dress up with her. She Loves everyone and has the best personality.

Bad: Separation anxiety. She can't stand to be away from me.

Ugly: If we need to put her up for a few minutes while we have someone come in like a plumber or the other day our Directv tech, she will try to tear the door down and had destroyed our bedroom door. But we still love her :)

This is my husbands dog, Chewy. He’s a mutt but was sold as a purebred shih tzu. I’m not a dog person and even I know they got fleeced lol

Good- quiet, hardly barks, sleeps a lot now that he’s older, doesn’t eat a lot, doesn’t shed at all

Bad- sensitive stomach so he gets $20 a bag food, can be stubborn, very very needy, doesn’t act like a dog (no fetch, doesn’t like toys at all),

Ugly- stupid. I’ve taught him sit and get to your mat and tats about all. A year or so ago I tried to teach him shake a paw and even after treats and repetition of over an hour I was still met with a blank stare when I tried the command. He’s from a puppy mill so I do think he’s stupid from too much inbreeding. He also knows I’m the alpha so I do give him points for that LOL

We just adopted a coon hound / lab mix from the humane society a month ago. She's now 4 months old, and I think she's just gorgeous. She looks just like a Redbone Coon hound.
[GALLERY=][/GALLERY]
Good:
She's so smart and has been really easy to train. Within days, she knew sit, stay, lay, and heel.
Super easy to potty train. Considering she'd never been worked with and lived in a crate/kennel until we adopted her, she took no time to train.
She's extraordinarily friendly. My coffee shop is dog friendly, I brought her with me last week and a lady knelt down and asked to pet her. Before she could get the request out, Abbie had crawled right into her lap. Hounds are not typically good guard dogs.
She doesn't seem to shed much. Compared to the cat hair around here, she doesn't leave much.

The bad:
She is stubborn. If she wants to do something, watch out! It's hard to convince her not to.
The hound smell is overwhelming at times. She has sensitive, dry skin so too many baths are not great for her. However, my house smelling like an old hound is aggravating.

Sadly, we found out last week that our older one, Katy who is 10 has hemangiosarcoma in her shoulder and we are heartbroken. :(

I am so sorry!:grouphug:...it is a horrible feeling...I've lost 4 of my 6 (English) bulldogs to different kinds of cancer-it is heartbreaking:sad1:
