Sum of All Thrills to Close

One I worry about is Spaceship Earth. So far so good but if Disney decides to turn Epcot into MK Light or even just a shopping and dining venue as some have said then what does that mean for Spaceship Earth?

I believe the Siemens (current sponsor of Spaceship Earth, among other things at Disney) partnership agreement with Disney expires some time in 2017. It seems to have been a win-win to-date. Siemens makes a lot of use of the VIP space there for meetings, and, it is a pillar for brand-awareness. But, who knows if the apparent, current Disney take-everything-you-can and give-as-little-as-possible mentality is spilling over to it's partnerships to where it would sour things for a renewal of that partnership.

I've not heard one way or the other if the partnership agreement will be renewed in some form or not. And, not sure if Disney would elect to operate it on their own absent a sponsor. But you'd hope they would keep it open given Spaceship Earth is the very icon of Epcot.

So what you're saying his my 6ft 5 1/2in husband (who is a skinny bean) likely wouldn't be able to ride it? He usually tries everything once if he thinks he can fit. We won't be back til next Sept so it may be a moot point but it might make him feel better if it was a ride he likely couldn't ride anyways cuz of his height.
My grandson is a 6'6" beanpole and had no trouble riding it! It was his and my granddaughters favorite ride.

I haven't read everything, but I have been hearing for a while that building was going to shut down. I use to work in those buildings and lets be honest there isn't much left there. They got ride of a whole section of workers for that building and most of the people that still work there are retiring or moving to a different location. I can see if SUM closes then the rest of the building will not be far behind.

Nothing going on in future world except Soarin, Spaceship Earth and The Land.

Why not rip the rest out and make room for more nations.

Please excuse my stupidity. Where and what is The Sum of All Thrills? I go every year to WDw and I did not even know it existed. Is it a ride?

It's in Innoventions at Epcot. It's a simulator based attraction. You first design your ow n roller coaster and then the ride vehicle simulates the coaster you just built. There are two stations and each station has room for two guests.

Oh that explains it! That must be why I blocked it out I hate roller coasters! Thanks!

Its such a shame that Epcot has become a shell of its former self. When I used to go in the 90's as a kid with my family, I used to love going to Epcot as there was something special about it. Loved the modern feeling of the place along with the fireworks of course but now it sounds like its become stale. Im off to Orlando next June and I never thought I'd say this, but I'm probably going to stay away from the place as it doesn't sound like its worth bothering with now which is so sad.

As a kid in the 90s, I absolutely resented going to EPCOT Center. "Modern feeling?" It had more of a late 1970s/early 1980s vibe and even the renovation to Future World in the mid-1990s didn't help much. My last family vacation with my parents and siblings to WDW was during the Millenium; the only times I've been back since are the ones when work gave me an "after 4PM" ticket that Disney used to heavily discount to convention traffic (although they stopped when it became an after 5PM ticket and was only $20 less than a one-day admission).

It felt modern to me as a 5 year old as it was something I'd never seen anywhere else before. In hindsight, it wasn't very modern by today's standards, but at the time, I remember it feeling like that.

Epcot feels like it's just being left to rot and that Disney are basically waiting for the ticket sales to get so low that they have an excuse to close it and turn it into some sort of smaller version of Disney Springs.
