Question for female cruisers only (Guys, really this will not interest you!)

Cuzisayso2 . . . Can you give me a ball-park range for the pricing of laser hair removal?

And,

Someone at the beginning of the thread talked about dying their eyelashes. I have been thinking of this. How do they do it? Do you go to a dermatologist or a hair salon!? Is it perm?

Thanks.

Just a word of warning for those using Veet or Nair. Do not under any circumstances put the cream round your bikini line and then lift your leg up on the bath or other high surface while you remove the cream and hair from the lower parts of your leg.

Why not?

Because the action can bring the creamed area round your bikini line into contact with your lower body and the result is not so much brazilian as coconut with alopecia. Trust me; I speak from bitter (and patchy bald) experience.

I can laugh about it now but at the time, it was hard to see the funny side.

Have had my legs waxed a few times, but for the cruise I used nair and it was just fine.

If you are going to get waxed, remember that you have to let the hair on your legs grow out so it's long enough for the wax to grab on to! My wax tech told me that means at least 1/4 of an inch. Also, definitely go have it done well before the trip. The first time, I had red spots all over my legs (looked like I had the chicken pox) and when I told someone else about it, she said it could be a reaction to the wax. The second time I went, I asked for a soy-based wax and there were hardly any red spots at all.

Am not brave enough to wax anywhere else, although it would be great to not have to shave the pits for a bit. Unfortunately, my hair and nails grow very fast and I don't get several weeks out of a waxing like others do.

I have a correction to make on an earlier post after talking with my DW. She said her treatment was called IPL (Intense pulse light) and not Laser as I had previously mentioned. It has now been two weeks since she has had her underarms done (only one treatment, some people need four) and she is completely satisfied. Next week she is getting hers legs and bikini area done. Hope you ladies out there do not mind a gentleman posting in this thread. - Mike

For those of you who are waxing virgins and worried about modesty, I would say it is more invasive than an exam from the GYN. And, much more interesting positions. There is the "frog" and the "stink bug". Use your imagination. The skin has to be taunt to really get in there and pull out those hairs. It is very painful but like childbirth you quickly forget and enjoy the results. It does become less painful if you keep up with it. Plus, I have rarely heard from a husband who doesn't appreciate it. My fiance was totally against me having it done but when I surprised him after our wedding, lets just say, he doesn't mind me going on a regular basis now. Those tech are very professional and a good one should make you feel at ease. Talk to your friends and find someone you trust. Also, if you get red and irritated when you do other areas, that area will get red as well.

One other bit of knowledge, I asked my tech who her male clients consisted of, she said they were all married men who's wives had talked them into doing it. As I heard on TV the other night, when you trim the hedges, it makes the tree look bigger. LOL

I am interested in an estimate price is for the bikini wax and for the laser treatment. How much? Do I need to take out a loan..or just try not to buy another outfit!!

I'm doing bikini laser treatment right now and it was $499 for "unlimited" treatments - this was a special the dr was running. It typically takes 5 sessions to see permanent results. I just completed session 2 and there is a definate difference.

Waxing was running about $30/treatment -- treatments last about a month.

I can't believe I'm posting on this thread, but here it goes.........

Ok, I'm no stranger to waxing ( do my eyebrows & upper lip regularly), but have never had anything else done. We are taking our first cruise in Sept & love the thought of not having to shave (anywhere!) during the trip. I wasn't exactly sure of what a brazilian wax was (although I had a pretty good idea), but my question to those who get just a bikini wax is "just how much of the area gets waxed"? Any info is great appreciated! Thanks!:wave2:

As a 20+ year veteran of waxing, how much you want removed is up to you. I have an old swim suit that I wear (but similar in how much it shows) to my waxing appointments. All the technicians that have waxed me have always gone just inside the line of my suit. So, the smaller the suit, the more to remove!

I've gotten 3 bikini waxes....since I'm a tad shy, I wear a thong, the only one I own. This works well, because the bathing suit I wear is NOT a thong!!! ;-) So the area I need removed is established.

The first time I got my lower legs done too, and I left the salon looking like I'd been in a mosquito house for a month. The next morning they were gone, and I was very happy. A lot of people say they'll just do it themselves, but I just do NOT have the nerve to rip away at my bikini line. I did do my underarms once, and while it hurt like hell at the time, the results were nice. I just don't have a problem shaving my underarms like my bikini line.

This last time, I had a gal new to me, but she said she'd been doing waxes for a long time. I wasn't impressed with how she did my bikini line. No after oil/lotion, and she didn't press down after she removed the strip. I also had more bumps than I have before. She gave me her card, so I'll use it next time, to schedule someone else!!! The laser thing, while I'm sure well worth it, is not something I could justify unless I won that amount somewhere. I couldn't find $500 to do that....

Also, someone was asking about more modest bathing suits, and I haven't seen a reply. Land's End has such a great variety. they even have mastectomy tops, that get right up to your armpit. They have 3 different hip heights, so you can get one up to your waist, or one that basically goes straight across your leg. Also, the skirt/short options that are popular right now! They'll cost you at least $50-$70, but if I find one I like, and am confortable in, I'm willing to pay it.

Thanks for starting this thread, Kelli

I did natural childbirth for both children but could not sit through a Brazilian wax....ouch! But I do have a question, everyone talks about "getting" their wax done. Has anyone done the waxing themselves? Is there a differance between the ones you can buy at the drugstores and the type done at the salon?

After listening to a couple of the girls at my salon argue over who was going to do a particular client's bikini wax ("oh, GOD, not *her*!" "You get this one" "No, you do it" "No way, I'll quit first" to the receptionist: "Make sure you call her and tell her to bathe and trim first or I'm not touching it" etc etc) I decided that I would never be "the one" they were talking about. I agree with modest suits and anyone who's looking there better be my DH!

i've never waxed 'down there', bikini or otherwise.....
however i have completely eliminated the hair using my own methods.....
and yes, DH was surprised but most appreciative....
the GYN however, (whom i hadn't thought i would be seeing any time soon) did a triple take when he saw me.....i had to bite my tongue to keep a straight face.....i laugh every time i remember the look on his face...;)

So, I know "curiosity killed the cat", but I have to ask anyway.....

You said you've never waxed "down there" but have eliminated all hair by your own methods. Do you mind sharing your "method". I'm thinking shaving, but if you've got any other ideas, please share. If you don't want to post, please feel free to pm me your ideas. Thanks! :hyper:

Krystina'sMommy--
yes shaving.....i use LOreal hair conditioner in place of shaving cream.....it works like a dream.....no rash or anything like what shaving normally causes....the first time i did it, it was kind of a joke sort of thing......
i really hadn't thought about the GYN....then i got a nasty breast infection and for some reason the GYN decided he should examine me completely (could it be i hadn't been there for 3 years????)....
i thought i was going to drop dead when i remembered my plucked chicken appearance.......but then when i saw that look on his face...well....i almost laughed out loud....i thought his eyes were going to quite literally pop out of his head....
i'm laughing now thinking about it...

gshoemate

I use a wax machine at home that I purchased at a beauty supply store. I do my bikini area and facial areas at home. I have seen the same machines in the salons near our home. I chose to do this at home because there is only one salon in the town I live in that does bikini waxing and the woman use to be my husbands secretary.

So I thought I was done with this thread & had all my questions answered. BUT, I have another question. Do any of you do your own underarm waxing? Wax up or wax down (direction of removing strip)? Again, any and all answers will be appreciated!

OK - here's another one who thought they would not post on this thread -

For those who do it themselves - could you please post the name of the wax machine and the price? Thanks
