Question for female cruisers only (Guys, really this will not interest you!)

I did natural childbirth for both children but could not sit through a Brazilian wax.

Yeah I sat through all of the first and most of the second births of my sons and know what you mean ;)

Grumbo, you are just too much!!!

Ladies, I am not a fan of waxing either, so here's a tip for shaving that I have found handy all though semi momentarily painful: Rubbing alcohol!!! Clean your razor frequently and your skin before and after. I also loofah or exfoliate regularly, it helps with the ingrown hairs, the alcohol does sting quite a bit, but it helps prevent the itchy irritation afterwards.

I can't believe I'm posting in this thread, but since nobody else has mentioned it - I will....

I use a product called Magic Shaving Powder (in the Platinum can). It is a depilatory that is recommended by the national Medical Association "as an effective shaving method for the relief of razor bumps in black men." Apparently, it was formulated for beards, but it works great for women!!!

I know it seems crazy, but I read about it on another message board (a scrapbooking one of all places!!), and the ladies there love it!!! Because I don't like to wax - I figured I'd try it out. It works for everything! Bikini, eyebrows, arms - pretty much anywhere. One caveat - the powder must be mixed with water. Once mixed, it is not as thick as say, NAIR or NEET. So when I use it I am very careful about not letting it run into my eyes (when doing my eyebrows) or into *any other parts* where it could cause irritation.

I've never had any bumps or allergic reactions (I have hyper-sensitive skin) with this stuff and it only takes 5 minutes, costs a little more than $2 bucks, and isn't too messy.

:p Grumbo,

Tried that! Didn't work too well for me although the part about the silk is true!:hyper:

The wax machine I use is called GiGiHonee and it cost about $45 for the machine and another $25-30 for the sticks, cloths and wax. This is the second machine of this same brand I have owned. The first one got tipped over under the sink and anyone who has ever used wax knows that it is almost impossible to clean. I had to throw it away because the wax was all over the controls. The first one I had for approx. 3 years and this one I have also had for that long.

One hint is that when you put the wax into the machine don't put in the whole container. Just about a 1/2 cup or so. If the whole container is put in it takes forever to heat.

Ladies, just a tip from someone who is recently recoving from the effects of "Veet." Don't walk, RUN away from the stuff. I tried it and it left red, painful BLISTERS...any those were the lucky patches. In a couple of places it completely ate through the skin and left open oozing sores. While it may or may not remove hair(couldn't really tell through all the swelling and blisters) the idea of smooth underarms was not a reality. I timed it for the 3 minutes as instructed, and actually removed it in part prior to the 3 minutes elaping because of the pain. That Veet is scary stuff. Hope it doesn't eat through the pipes where I rinsed away the product, or through the metal trash can where I promptly threw the offending can.

With all this talk about hair removal just a word of caution-all depillatories tell you to try it on a small area first to see if you are sensitive to the product.

And in many parts of Europe it is considered lovely for women to have hair everywhere and they think that Americans are nuts for shaving, tweezing, waxing etc. it away!

I had a patient who told me a story about visiting relatives in rural Germany. Her relatives were discussing a local woman who they referred to as a '*****'. My patient asked why they thought that because she had met the woman and she seemed very ordinary to her. They reply was that she shaved her underarms! I asked my patient what she did for the rest of her trip (because she did shave her underarms). Her reply was "I wore blouses with sleeves and kept my arms at my sides"! ROFL

I just love this thread! It is very informative, not to mention a hoot!::yes::

I had a similar experience with Veet although (luckily) not as bad as yours. It left terrible red bumps and burning. I have found Nair to be very effective for hair removal. It's the first time I've used it in many years and I don't know what they've done to improve it, but it's much better than I remember!
No redness or burning:D . Veet should be banned!

Just thought I would post a comment on different terminology!

In the UK a Brazillian leaves what was described as a landing strip by an earlier poster. The waxing that removes ALL hair is called a Holyywood over here!

I am not brave enough to wax anything but my legs. However we brits are with you and not our European neighbours on the hair removal front. It is considered unusual not to shave \ wax. Julia Roberts caused a storm over here at a premiere by waving to the crowd and revealing unshaven armpits a few years back.

I second this!! a friend of mine told me about and while Ive only used it on my legs it works wonders!!!!

This stuff is GREAT and no irritation! :)

FYI,
I tried this a few weeks ago and it really did work. For those of you that do get red bumps of rashes after you wax, try putting a little bit of Visene(sp?) on the effected area! It not only takes the red out of eyes, but out of skin as well! I was amazed!

Where did you find this powder? I've tried the Veet, and it wasn't that great. I've also tried Nair, and that wasn't that great.

So I mix the powder with water, and away it goes? Hmm...

Would it work for shaving a head? My DH does a very short buzz (a zero on the clippers), but wants totally smooth head. So then he needs to use a Bic razor on the head.. not a good scene!

I tried the veet wax, it was OK. Tried neet bikini cream, PAINFUL, red swollen and it did not remove all the hair. Going to Walmart today, will look for the magic shaving powder!

If that does not work, I think I'll break down and get a professional waxing. Leaving in less than 3 weeks though, so I'll need to decide very soon.

I have had a bikini wax prior---- go about 1 -2 days before you leave to go........It hurts like heck, but worth it. (Brings tears to your eyes, but it's over quick!)

Also - Nair has a new "4 minute" hair removal. I've had no probs with it at all -- tho that's not the case with everyone.
Just apply right before you go. Walk around for a few minutes then get in the shower with a wash cloth & it comes right off!
