OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Holy macaroni, cewait! I guess I shouldn't be shocked at those prices but geez! I wanted to to do the half next year...if they do a special medal and maybe the relay the next day. I'm hoping to do the full again in 2013 for the 20th anniversary...if I can afford it. Where's that going broke smilie!

Little more digging since I forgot about he relay..

Relay costs
$280.00 on or before April 24, 2011
$300.00 between April 25 – July 3, 2011
$320.00 on or after July 4, 2011

Two person teams w/ an Inaugural Medal. Says 'new' half marathong courses but I believe that they are unsing the old half course from runner 1 and the back half of the current full for runner 2. Expect a little confusion in front of the MK parking lot at mile 13.

AND not leaving the 5k folks out....

$50 for the 5k and $55 for the 5k stroller division. I guess the added $5 is for the extra wear and tear on the pavement. It's in Epcot, again.

Hmmm, definitely a two-person team, huh? I was hoping for a 4-person team for the relay.

Meant to add - thanks, Coach Charles, for digging up this info for us.

You did not get a code. Disney will send an e-mail to the January folks before registration opens.

Thanks Coach! I didn't think I'd seen a code, but I couldn't find the email at all. Good to know I didn't miss it or delete it.

You understand that the Goofy fee COVERS both the full and half, right?

Yes, I know that it covers both races. I just paid for DL half and I need to pay for W&D too. I was going to try to do a Tri this summer, but that is looking like it might not happen just so I can pay for all my Disney races.

It is a seriuos amount of cash, I dont know whats goofier, actually running it or the cash were paying to do it!!! I havent even paid the flights yet thats on the cc!!!

I figured that was probably the case, just your comment begged a response; mainly for those who casully read it and come to the conclusion that you had to pay multiple entries.... Disney races tend to need a separate budget category in my race budget.

i'm surprised that the cost for the half and the full are the same! i was thinking i'd need to pay more for the full than i did for the princess half. what a pleasant surprise. you don't get those kind of $$ surprises when it comes to disney!

Are those the prices before the discount code? I don't like to assume anything. Thanks!

so my "absolutely, no way" stance on 2012 is slowly changing to a "maybe i should think about it after all" for the full

folks up here in the northeast - how bad is it to train for the full in the late fall/early winter? i feel like the bulk of the miles will fall in november-mid dec and you end up tapering before christmas anyways....the weather won't be quite so brutal then especially if you do your long runs in the middle of the day, right? or maybe i'm just deluding myself. i have trouble with running in temps below the 30s...but running 20, even 16, miles on a treadmill would really, really suck.

Having trained for the Disney full and now training for Boston, I have to say it's better weatherwise to train for Disney. Not nearly as many worries about having snow covered roads, etc. Right now, I'm just toughing it out. Almost makes training for Goofy next year look easy (I said ALMOST!)

Yeah - the winter weather woes are a huge scare for me when it comes to Boston (not that I have any real reason to stress about that because the times are so tough for me now. I always joke that my bq strategy is to hold the same pace for the next 30 years ha) that's amazing you can train through the winter, especially this one)

How would you say training for the full compares to training for a fall marathon? Easier/tougher/similar?

Lots of great info on this already! Any ideas on how much the VIP area would be? The only other really big race I've done (besides Baltimore) was Frederick and I really wish I would have signed up for their VIP area. I might want to put up the extra cash for that.

I'm also worried about weather (being in MD). We didn't get hit with a lot of storms back in November/December but it could happen.

In the neighborhood of $100, if I recall correctly. Of all the years I have been coming, 2010 was truly the only year that I think it would be a good spend....but even then, it was not all that bad. Well, I guess 03 and 06 were not so warm, either.

In all honesty it's what you make of it. I have several friends who I look up in the staging area. For me it is just not a great spend. For many, since it is carpeted its a great place to stretch out and wait for the start. It has a few hidden potties that the masses cannot get to and does have early access to the start line...though I am not sure that is a privilege on a cold and windy morning.

i haven't trained for a full yet but i did train for the princess half which was at the end of feb....which meant alot of training in the freezing temps of jan and feb. i ran a ten miler in 14 degrees and 20-30mph gusts and it was pretty miserable. but, i kept thinking to myself, "this sucks but at least my actual race won't be this bad." i tried to tell myself that i should be prepared to run in anything and that the awfulness of the running through snow and freezing rain would make running in the "cold" of florida a treat. turned out the princess had record high temps...lol.

I'm in Baltimore too, and I think I would much rather train in the cold (it never gets THAT cold in Baltimore!) than in the heat of the summer. I'm currently contemplating doing the Atlantic City marathon in mid October, and I'm not looking forward to doing long runs in 90+ days with the humidity!

That is true!! I'm more worried about snow then cold.

That's good to know! Can you register for the marathon and then add VIP later? Or do you have to get both at once?

Usually the Retreat will not open for entry until the fall. Though I notice that the Spectator packages are going on sale this week, so maybe they will. I seem to recall that the retreat package does not have a fullness ticker so it starts to be a gamble the later you go. Generally the tent will not sell out until the 15 day forecast comes out.

writedisney--where do you train? I live downtown, and I run a lot on the waterfront promenade, which is normally okay unless we get a LOT of snow. if you're in the suburbs, you should be okay running in the road if you get some good reflective gear. I've also had people in more northern climes recommend yaktracks. my cousin in VT uses those to run outside year round.
