Wk of Mar 2 - WISH Walking/Running Club

I just need some medicine help from Mel and Stephanie, our resident pharmacists. I am having trouble sleeping, I'm exhausted when I lay down, but I can't fall asleep, I lay awake for literally hours (last night I went to bed at 10:30, didn't fall asleep until close to 2:00) and think and worry about things. I've always had trouble falling asleep, but now it's a million times worse. So, now for my question: is it okay to take Tylenol PM to help me sleep on those nights? I know Tylenol anything is pretty much okay, not sure about taking sleeping pills. If you aren't sure, I'll e-mail my doctor later today, I just don't want him to think I am a druggie!!! Thanks!!!!!

The PM part of Tylenol PM is just Benadryl so you could just take that instead. You probably dont' need Tylenol PM unless you're having pain that is interfering with sleep. Benadryl is okay in pregnancy, but no more than 50 mg. Stephanie can correct me but I believe most adult dosing is 25mg per capsule/caplet/tablet so start with one to see if it helps. Generally, Benadryl is not a good sleep aid...it may help break the insomnia cycle but should not be used long-term (more than 7 days) because it does not promote good sleep and can make you drowsy in the morning.

As always, check with your OB before taking anything they haven't authorized. They may have some other options available that are better for sleep. Insomnia, anxiety, worry are pretty common in pregnancy (and parenthood ;) ) but you need to be sure there's nothing else going on that may be contributing (like your thyroid). If you haven't had a thyroid check, it might be worth a quick blood test to be sure.

Stephanie - Yikes, I am behind on my volunterring. :scared1: Glad you had fun!

Cecelia, Jeff & Betsy - COngrats on your races!!! :thumbsup2

Joan - Welcoem!!!

Mel - I thought I had heard abotu ChiRUnnign from you, but got confused when you weren't in on teh talks of teh book.

Z - PM WIndwalekr Dave to get on a Team. Great job for doing your personal 5K. If you were that tired, you needed your rest.

Helen - :rotfl: Tiara bruise? Comgrats n teh LR!

Ms. Duck - IF you are getign sick, upping the calorie count could not hurt fro a bit. Maybe you just need rest? SOunds liek your body went through a lot last week. Hope you're feeling better soon! I haev such sympathy fro long dental visits that end up looking like you were beatedn. I have been there. :grouphug:

ANgie - Congrats on teh marina! :wizaerd: for BObby!

Well, I had an outdoor 8-miler. In the 30s. SUn shining. Actually had to remove a layer. DOn't worry, it's going to snow today. :sad2:

Chi Update - Well, I finally attmpted some techniques on my run. I picked running upright adn movign the arms by twisting my spine. I found the arm movement kept my legs from going out too far in front. I found keeping upright HARD. Can't do teh lean yet, as I have awful form, bend at th waist badly, and need to be upright before I lean. I founf that I was so focused on form that I forgot I was running. I felt like I was working hard, but going slow. Actually, I was doing better than i had in almost a year. Pretty happy with that. My core hurts. Obviously, it's not used to holding mye up. No surprise that my breathing was much easier upright, though. The hard part is that I always bend over to avoid the wind. Hard for em to let it get me in the face. We get some pretty good wind going, so it's going to take a while fo me to break that. Felt good, though.

Hey everyone, I have been gone for a bit. Last week I took some needed rest and went with my mom to a quilting retreat (love doing that). I am the baby of the group, so the other ladies are just so nice (and pick on me!). Monday I came down with a monster of a cold, so no running for me after my LR on Sunday. Feeling a bit better today so I may venture onto the TM tonight. We had freezing rain last night, so with the thaw, cold, thaw, freezing rain.... there is 3 inch thick ice in places. Very sad that I won't be getting outside anytime soon if this keeps up!!!

Carrie - I have yet to try the Chi techniques, but very excited to hear of your results. I can only hope for the best for me also!

Jeff - YOU ROCK!!! That is an amazing time!!!

Cecilia - YOU ROCK TOO!

I know I won't get to everyone else so I will just say... KEEP ON KEEPING ON!!

Great. So that's what this rain is going to turn into. :guilty: Glad you had some good getaway time! You needed that!

Good afternoon everyone!

Cecilia, Jeff & Betsy - :thumbsup2 Way to go on your races! And Cecilia I totally agree on the March madness thing. Yesterday we got teased with 50 degrees and tomorrow another 3-5 inches of snow. Think we've all had enough this year.

Z - great job on the PR and the starting to get up then just going right back out sound a lot like my DS daily. However you have a far better reason than he does (he's 19...nuh said).

Krista - always nice to hear happy baby news.

Helen - tiara bruise :rotfl: I had one of those after a New Years Party and it especially hurts when brushing your hair out!

Congrats and way to go to everyone I know I've missed.

Yesterday was 50 here :cool1: so got out for a 3 mile walk. Had the same problem with my left shin again. Pain up the front and outside. Stopped twice to stretch it and massaged it the last time and shortened my stride a bit more. After that it was fine. Think I may have to warm it up then stretch it real good before heading out. Maybe even a light massage before hitting the road will help. Have a 5K this Sat and really don't want to have to stop multiple times. Just want to figure out what's up, ya know. :sad1:

Time going to be tight this week as we leave for WDW on Thursday afternoon so going to try to keep up but will definitely fall behind this weekend without internet.

Have a great week everyone!!

I have a question for you guys...

Tonight my knee started bothering me... It doesn't hurt when I stand or walk. I don't think it bothered me on my run yesterday. It started bothering me a bit on the bike tonight. It only hurts when I press on it, stand or squat. again...not when I walk. It's just above my knee. I've read about pains inside the knee, or just below, but above??? It's in the area that just as you squate, it's the very top there of the knee.

Any ideas what this may be? I do not want to injur it worse. I did the bike tonight and I'll aquacise tomorrow. My next run is supposed to be Wednesday. There is an aquajogger class on Wed night I could do instead.

Thanks for any input!!! I appreciate your wisdom!!!

Stacie
- I'm sure there are others who can tell you more than I can, but I have had my issues with my knee as well. I would recommend that you stretch it out really well after every run. I can tell a difference when I don't do that. It may just be fatigued from the run and then the biking. Try giving it a days rest. The aqua class sounds like a good option. Great job on the four miler! :thumbsup2 I just did my first one on Saturday. I never thought I would EVER be able to run that far. You are doing great!

Ok, now I have a question???????

Lately after my runs, I have peeling skin on the inside of my heels. It doesn't hurt or anything, and it just peels off. What could this be from? I have new running shoes, and they don't cause me any pain whatsoever, they are like running on clouds. :cloud9: Just wondering if it is something associated with my new longer distances, and quicker pace? :confused3

Wish I could help you more, but the only thing I can think of is making sure your seat to pedal distance is right (also how far forward or back the seat is. I've experience behind the knee pain, but never right above it. Hopefully, someone has someone has some experience with what you are describing and can help you out.

The weekly thread seems to be calming down now and I can almost keep up. Hopefully people aren't posting elsewhere and cause me to track them down. ;)

I went for the first training session after my half and did a little on the bike. I am going to try to keep off the legs until the race Saturday to make sure I don't hurt them like after Mickey.

Timmy seems to be better but we will know for sure after his appointment Wednesday. He is definately happier and back to his usual self.

Ice and snow, I guess I shouldn't mention that it is in the 70's here with a low in the upper 50's then. :lmao: I have given up on getting any snow this year but there is always the possibility for next year. :thumbsup2

Judy - When sliding around on the ice, one needs to wear ice skates. Then you are able to jump and twirl as much as you want and not fall down. At least that is what they show on TV all the time. By the way, who is Calgon and what have they done to Charlie.

Allie - Not sure about the skin peeling but it could be from getting calluses or your shoes rubbing when you run.

Stacie - I agree to take it easy on your knee. The water running would be better if you are injured.

TiggerJeff - Great job on the half. That is great you shattered your PR.

Mel - Did you volunteer for the race? Nice you took Jeff to the start instead of making him get a warmup jog in. ;)

Liz - Sorry to hear about your shin but glad you were able to get outside for your run. YOu might try a shin brace and see if that helps any.

Jen - Glad you had fun at your quilting retreat. There's that ice thing people keep talking about. I think it is just a figment on people's imagination. :rolleyes1

Carrie - Glad the Chi running seems to be helping. It sounds too complicated for me to attempt right now.

Shan - Great job on your run. 354 boxes of cookies, sounds like another party will be at your house this weekend. :lmao:

Heather - It counts as long as you jump up and down while singing. :lmao: Hope you enjoyed the concert.

Krista - Make sure you wake Steve up to let him know you can't sleep. It is important he shares in everything with the pregnancy.:lmao: Glad the doctor visit went well.

Angie - Great news about the marina. Hope Bobby can get over his back problems quickly and sorry he had to miss the half.

Helen - Sounds like you had a good time even with the tiara bruise. Good luck with your decision about Disneyland. I know those flights can get quite expensive.

Debra - Great job on staying with your training program. Glad you are breaking out of your winter blues.

Vic - Not getting out there with all this nice weather. Now it is going to get to the upper 90's with high humididty because you weren't grateful enough. :lmao:

Craig - Thanks for taking out the tour group for us. We locals try to avoid them like the plague although they are fun to people watch as long as you don't have to interact with them.

Lily - Glad to hear the staples came out and you have been cleared to run again.

Mightyduck - Hope you aren't getting sick but that is what it sounds like. Take it easy and you will be back out there feeling great again.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Bill

Bill - lol. I think that's the point. You fucus on so many other things that you forget you're running. ;) Hope teh doc's appointmetn goes well!

Allie - FOrgot ot look where you're from. EIther way, I'm guessing your skin just gets soft from sweat and rubs off easily. Maybe some powder in your socks? You have wicking socks, right? Maybe a thicker sock?

twowdwfools - Soudns liek you've got a good plan to deal with it. If it doesn't help, you may want to rest and find some other XT. Hop eyour plan works!

Stacie - I don't know about your knee. Hope soemone her edoes. Maybe one of our biling gurus knows.

Well, dh's achilles was bothering him adn I was sore from cleaning out my home offic. Yeah, I ran 8 miles fine, but I pulled something cleanig. :guilty: Told DAve my power housework should count. ;) ANyway, thinking of teams competitions, because I am too lazy on my own, I got out a yoga vidoe and dh and I did that for 50 minutes. Thank you teams ocmpetition!!!! That was big for me not to just call it a night.

Helen...a tiara bruise! Love it! Sorry it hurts, but that is a classic injury for a princess!

Carrie...about the running into the wind and having your head down...could it be because of the wind hitting your face/eyes? If so, wear sunglasses. They have some with lenses you can switch out for lower light conditions if it is too dark for regular sunglasses. I almost always wear mine running (except at evening workouts which last until it's dark). And I always wear them while biking outside!

Keep up the good work, everyone!

Vic - Not getting out there with all this nice weather. Now it is going to get to the upper 90's with high humididty because you weren't grateful enough.

Heat and humidity builds character. :rolleyes1 Yeah that's it, character. :rotfl2:

Hey everyone! Yes, the queen of drama is back. Ughhh... and my workouts are yet again affected by my crazy. I swear, one day I will have a normal life! So my receptionist/office receptionist turned into a nut case and was arrested a couple weeks ago and my brother has started his shenanagins again. Oh and my four year old was kicked out of pre-school for a day for being naughty.

On a brighter note... I made it 35 minutes on the TM last night after being down with the croupy cough. It was speed walking instead of running, but I was satisfied with that!

Bill - Maybe the ice is an illusion. Do you think I will fall on it if I pretend it's not there????

Helen - Tiara bruise??? Wow, I hope the tiara was stunning on you!!!

Carrie - how was your rain??? I hope you melt up soon (Wait... me first!!)

Betsy - I do wear sunglasses. Still don't like the wind hitting me in the face. Yes, I am a whimp. ;) I think part of it may be from trail running in hs and from runnign on ice and snow adn checking footing. Part of it's just cause it feels easier to me. No core. Have I mentioned I'm teh queen of excuses too? ;) Will just have to tough it out, but thanks for trying.

Jen - :grouphug: Hey you got your break last week. WHat do you expect? ;) The rain stopped, fro teh most part, before the cold, so not so bad. Really do wish sprign would come, though. You can beat me by half a day fi it helps. ;)

Krista--sorry I didn't see your post until now--but ditto what Mel said. And yes, the typical adult dose is 25mg. Hope you can get some relief

Oh, and speaking of "march madness" Look what we woke up to this morning
DSC01069.jpg

And this is after 75 and sunny on Sunday!

Did get a good TM workout yesterday. 3.6 miles in 35 min (two miles at 8:34, one at 9:14 and the rest of the mileage in warm-up/ cool down)

Hope everyone else is doing well! Need ot get DS down for a nap!

Jen- I am so sorry about all the drama! I think you need to give up and move to Florida. ;)

Carrie- WTG on the yoga!

Krista- I hope that you are sleeping better. I had a lot of trouble sleeping when I was pregnant (all 3 times). I bought one of those body pillows, and it helped alot.

Bill- I am so glad that Timmy is feeling better! I hope the doctor gives him a clean bill of health tomorrow.

No training for me yet today. We had a blast at the rodeo last night. Tim McGraw was awesome! My goal is to ride the exercise bike while I watch American Idol tonight.

Keep up the great work everyone!

On the question of pain above the knee, especially when biking. That could be where the quad muscle attaches to the knee. You may have a tight quad and need to work it out with some massage. If it's underneath the leg above the knee it is probably the ITband which attaches there. If your ITband is sore in the middle the symtom is pain where it attaches because that's where the tightness if felt. Run your thumb along that outside space between the quads and the hams and see if it's sore in there.

On the peeling feet. Keep your feet lotioned and as smooth as possible. Rough skin causes more friction than smooth skin. A nightly massage with lotion before bed works wonders.

Stretching regularly is helping my achillies. If I can just keep it up I should see big improvements in my flexiability and in my speed.

Hey Guys,
I’m a newbie on this thread. I am relatively new to running.

A little history> I was diagnosed with Cutaneous  T-Cell Lymphoma in Oct/Nov of 06. Went through chemo last year. Luckily the type chemo I’m taking (Rituxim) is not that bad of a chemo (not that any are 'good'). The bad part was I had to take mega doses of prednisone along with the chemo. A side effect of this was I ate everything in sight. Gained about 30lbs. Then I found out after my regular chemo that I need chemo every three months to keep the T-cells happy. All this while turning 50!

Well so happens I have a DS and BIL that are runners. She talked me into walking to maintain my health and lose some of that extra lbs. Long story short- we ended up doing the marathon relay at Myrtle Beach this year. I did my 5 miles at a 13 minute pace (oh yeah-I had to have a Garmin after I got started). Well we were so proud of our times and ready to train for next year when we found out, no more relay. Well one thing has lead to another and we said heck, if we are gonna do a ½ then why not Disney.
So I’ve got 2 rounds of chemo in April, July, October…. I figure that training is a great way to keep me going, lose the weight and have my Disney too! I’m up to doing the 5 miles at a 11:40 pace on my best days. Did 7 miles today just because we registered for the Disney ½ yesterday. Anyway glad to meet everyone and see all the different styles and personalities here. Thanks for letting me be a part.

MickeyT - Welcome to WISH!!! What an incredible story. I am so impressed by you're making the best of things. You're walking helps make those white blood cells too. Great job! Looking foreward to sharing more about training with you!

Allie - FOrgot ot look where you're from. EIther way, I'm guessing your skin just gets soft from sweat and rubs off easily. Maybe some powder in your socks? You have wicking socks, right? Maybe a thicker sock?

I'm from AL. I just bought some Hanes dri socks. It said on the package that they wick moisture away. I've been running in cotton socks. Could that have been my problem? It was really warm (75 degrees) when I ran yesterday. Can heat make a difference?
