Wk of Mar 2 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Jeff, Cecilia,Betsy Way to go on your runs! PR's or not, they are great results.
I have the benefit of knowing the Minnie 15k will be a PR--it has to be when it's your first race!

And spring must be coming because it was a balmy, beautiful 35 today and I saw 7 robins all together when I was out walking the dog.

Maura

Good Afternoon!

I have been MIA! I just kind of wimped out last week....

But I dug out a 15K training plan, stuck it on the wall and went out today and did 2 miles.

Cecelia, GREAT time. Randy did the race this morning and he said the conditions were great. Last year I think he froze LOL! I went with him to get his stuff yesterday and that had to be the most pathetic "expo" area ever LOL! Do lots of runners buy gutter guard systems? (There were two gutter guard places, two small retail booths and some place peddeling "Salad pie" or something like that!)

Jeff, Great time for you too.

And Kevin, Way to go on the PR. (I love the story... are you sure you just didn't dream about getting up?)

WTG to Z for the 5k PR!:cool1:

WTG Cecilia, Jeff & Betsy for the 1/2 mary PRs!

We all are getting so fast!

Cool Mel for the great 3 mile run.

I only ran 8.1 today...my ave MPM was a little slower than normal (may have been the 5 pcs of pizza I had for lunch:goodvibes ) I did the run in 1:11:40...8:51 MPM.
It was a perfect day to get out on the trails....:yay: Oh, I also danced about 3 hours b/4 the run too...

Well here goes...I'm new to running (have been a walker for years). I signed up for the Minnie Marathon, pull Hal higdons 10 weeks to race work out off the internet. Today I did my first outside run (have been on the treadmill). I had hoped for a 10 min mile. but pulled off 8 miles at 10.31.

I'm totally impressed with you other and you help to motivate me. I feel if I can do it this year. then I can do it next year, etc.

I hope it's okay to post this and that I'm not breaking any rules, but I did want to share this with my Disboard buddies and fellow walking and run/walk enthusiasts. My brother and I both carry the diagnosis of MS so I do the MS Walk every year, but there is a new (actually I think it's been around a couple of years now) "Challenge Walk" that is 30-50 miles over 2-3 days. In case you're interested or have friends who are, here's a link:

http://www.nationalmssociety.org/site/PageServer?pagename=HOM_EVENTS_ms_challenge_walk

It's a cause dear to our family for obvious reasons--plus I think the walks are just plain fun. It's inspiring to see folks with MS even doing the 1-mile walk.
I just thought I'd respond to your post. Your post about the link to finding the race event in our area is as far as I am aware just fine to post. We are always looking for events in which to participate. The problem according to these board guidlines is that we are not permitted to ask folks to contribute to our fundraising efforts unless permission is granted from the owner of this Website. It is a difficult nerve strike here since most of us do raise funds for our causes.

Good job everyone for getting out there.

Yesterday I did my 30 minutes on the gerbil track. Today I rest. Recovery is progressing. Snow is melting here today.

Public Service Announcement: To our event participants, don't forget to please post your race reports on the Race Reports/Encouragement/Kudos thread too. I look forward to reading about all that everyone did.

Another Public Service Announcement: Dont forget to post up your events to the WISH Team Calendar. I do think we've got the hang of that much better this year. Did you SEE what we're doing so far? Fantastic!

Last Announcement: WWDave, good luck with your procedure tomorrow and speedy recovery.

Thanks Lily. Not asking for any funds since I don't know if I could pull off the Challenge Walk, but I know there are excellent walkers on the boards who could! Which raises the question for me: What are the best exercises to strengthen the fast walking muscles? Anyone? :)

Cecelia:  Nice job! Woohoo!

Z: Well done! You need all the sleep you can get over there. Great job on the run when you did it!

Beckie: I've been sluggish since the marathon, too. Of course, I was sluggish BEFORE the marathon, having only started exercising since the week after the marathon! :) I blame it on the winter blahs. Spring will rejuvenate us (I hope!).

Jackie: That errand running puts you ahead of me--I sent DH out for bread for sandwiches!

Mel: Woohoo! And, you are so sweet to be the early drop-off driver!

Jeff: :cool1: Excellent on the race!

Martha: Glad to hear you are out there--take care of that IT band!

Vic: That's almost teasing, you know. I woke up this morning and the weather said "33 degrees. Feels like: 19 degrees." And I did not leave the house until it got over 35! Do some slacking for me out in the sunshine if you get a chance.

Craig: Sounds like your training is going well! I had a confrontation with a tour group from Uruguay once: I got pushed up against the metal stantions in the preshow at RnR and had a nasty bruise and cut on my leg. Security refused to do anything at the time, but guest relations made it better when i got home. :) Darn tour groups! My pet peeve is when one dude steps in front of you at the fast pass machine and whips out a two-inch stack of tickets.

Betsy: :cool1: Way to go!

Maura: I saw crocuses in a neighbor's yard this morning! Spring is coming!

Carol: Way to go on finding a way to get on track! I would never work out if not for my training plan (and posting here).

GatorPhipps: Was the dancing part of a duathlon with the running? :confused3 :lmao: Three hours! Nice job getting out there today!

Joan: Welcome!

Larah: I'm finding a lot of the drills in Dave McGovern's book are helpful; WWdave recommended it.

WWDave: Best wishes for tomorrow!

Oh, WISHfriends, I feel like I'm falling apart. After weeks of trying so hard to stay on track, last week (and today) have not gone well.

After that ridiculous 3-hour dental appt. (which left me with a bruise that my students were pretty sure came from my husband!), I missed Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday I had a lot of work to do for work, and Thursday I dragged myself to the gym to do my tempo work. It was, as Helen says, a stonker of a walk. I couldn't do 20 minutes at pace on the TM; I could only do 10 and while I felt better than when I did the tempo work the week before, it sucked (can I say that here?). Friday night and Saturday I had obligations at my school. I felt run-down Saturday morning and slept and then left for school a little after 12. I got home after 11 p.m.

Today when we went for our walk, it was a cutback week--only four miles (and I can remember being so proud when I made it to five miles! Now four is "only"). Sadly, I got lightheaded less than two miles out and came home. I ate a clif bar, drank more water (it's cold out and I had drank plenty before we left), and took a nap. DH thinks I'm getting sick. He made me hot tea and soup for dinner, and my stomach is unhappy about it (in a way that made it clear).

I am wondering if I'm not eating enough--I was on the run all day yesterday; clif bar and banana for breakfast, half a cup of chick peas for lunch (!), and dinner of meatballs, salad, dinner rolls, and some gnocci and broccoli (catered dinner at the school). I drank enough water. The problem? I'm so small, my daily calories should be about 1200, not hard for even me to get. And an hour of walking only burns 200 calories even if I push myself, so I hadn't worried about it.

Any ideas on how I can tell if it's my calories or I'm just fighting something?

Cecilia, Jeff and Betsty--WTG on some smoking times! You guys rock!

Well, I spent almost 8 hours at the finish line of the Little Rock Marathon today. I got to hand out finisher's shirts and it was loads of fun. Here's me when the half winner crossed the line at just over 1 hour:worship: The full winner crossed at around 2:20. It was a great day and loads of compliments on how the race was put on--So if any of ya'll are looking for a great race in march of next year, come see us! We'd love to have you!

Now I'm jazzed again about running--now I just need to get a race on the calendar. Hope everyone has a great week!

Welcome joan!

I'm gonna brag on Jeff since he didn't say everything about his race. Not only was this a PR but he beat his WDW time by 33 min!!! And 2:21 was his clock time...chip time was 2:19:50! And he's only been running for a year! Getting up to drive him to the start was certainly no problem...he's done it for me the last 2 years for this race. WTG Honey!!!!

Jackie: I'd be cranky too, being told to rest. I'm glad to hear you don't have a stress fracture, though!

Lily: Congratulations on getting your staples removed. I'm sooooo impressed with how quickly you're getting back on track. (Sorry, I couldn't resist the pun!)

Becky: Welcome Back! It sounds like you needed a little post-event, post-training vacation. Good to hear you're back to 4 runs/week--that's more than me! And you're getting your miles in every week 1, or 3, miles at a time.

SamSam: Jogging, huh? Well it sounds like whatever you were doing, you were definitely moving! I hope your Cali/Vegas trip was filled with anecdotes & memories that you can share, that don't have to stay in Vegas.

Martha: I'm with you on trying to see the positives in snow shoveling. That said, I'd trade it all in for a little spring break with sand, surf, and slogging. You must feel so good that you're running and taking care of that IT band, not to mention yoga.

Maura: I'm sure some folks here will suggest how to strip down for the Minnie--not me, though! I'm too busy giggling at your "eat and run" wittiness.

Stephanie: It's so great to hear about your volunteering experience at the Little Rock Marathon. I'm keeping it in mind for next March for sure--as it sounds wonderful. The 3-1 ratio of racing to volunteering also gives me something to think about and aim for. I do so appreciate all the volunteers give to us.

Casey: Oooh, the Run Away With Cirque du Soleil? Sounds interesting. What stands out about it, in your experience?

Aloha Jeff: Thanks for sharing your pictures. You've got some great views and I do admit to being particularly fond of the penguins. Given my Bingham adoration, I don't think that's so surprising. And you always look so calm and relaxed....Hawaii does a body good, I think!

Mel: WTG with the run! Have fun spectating! And you are so right to give more details, because Jeff is way too modest.

Tigger Jeff: Good luck with your Sarasota race! Oooops, I guess that's CONGRATULATIONS on your PR! 33 minutes faster than Disney! And running a year. I say everything about the event and your performance deserves much more bragging than you'd done.

WWDave: What's all this about ToT social events? I haven't been paying too much attention, but the other day DOOD said, "You want to do ToT, right?" I don't know what that means, but I'm hopeful. :upsidedow

Z: A guilt run, huh? I'd call it dedication, but guilt works too (and motivates me, as well). Whatever you call it, yea for the PR! :woohoo: Oh, and I don't think it's ever too late to join a team, but PM WWDave for a team assignment!

Cecilia the still somewhat sane: You're a crazy woman, and that's so cool that you signed up because you got the inside scoop. You've got guts & legs of steel. And you set a PR??!!! YOU ROCK!

Kelley: Good for you for finding your groove back with a new challenge. I look forward to hearing your progress toward the HM. Are you going to stick with a 4/1, do you know?

Lara: Thanks for the link to the MS Challenge Walk. I'm going to float the idea of a MS event to my local SparkPeople team!

Vic: What beautiful weather you're reporting. Can I beat YOU with a stick for taunting me with it? :rotfl2: :goodvibes

Craig: Excellent training report! I laughed at your 8:20 per mile "just for fun." Not because it wasn't, but because it would kill me! I definitely think you're going to be celebrating at the Minnie if there are no Brazilian touring groups getting in your way.

Betsy: Your 1/2 time sounds really good and like you could be headed toward a PR in the near future, whether in similar or more favorable conditions. Me? I'm just in awe that you can remember all the details--I tend to blank out and say, "That one was HARD." I guess that's what experience brings, huh?

CarolA: Yeah for the run, and for committing to the training program. I'm like you--I need to put it on the wall (I use a grease board) to make it official.

Christa: Yeah, your run was a little off and maybe dancing for 3 hours beforehand *might* have something to do with it? :rotfl2: No, I really do think it was the pizza.. :rolleyes1 Seriously, though, great run & I'm happy you're a trailblazer!

Joan4Mickey: Welcome! And wow--first time outside & you did 8 miles at a 10.31? :worship: I"m sure you're going to have a great time (in both senses) running the Minnie!

Lily: Thanks for all the PSAs; it helps make me aware of the rules & rituals of the WISH board that I'm not always aware of. I need to give Kudos much more often to my WISH team--I admire you all so much. And I'm especially happy for you, Lily, for getting on the gerbil track and recovery road so quickly!

WWDave: Good luck tomorrow. We'll miss you for the next couple of days! The boards won't be the same without you.

Ms. Mighty: Oooh I'm sorry you had such a stonker of a week. (I'm now adopting that term, too.) I'm not sure about whether it's calories or illness, so I hope others might know. I do wonder if your extensive dental work might have had a lingering effect or lowered your body's defenses; that is, on top of all the exercise you've been doing, the physical effects of the appt. & the stress surrounded it might cause your body to temporarily "break down"? At any rate, I hope you feel better soon & get back to your training program.

As for me: I've completed another C25K day on Saturday--ending week 7!!!! I finished with some R/W to meet my training program for the Cleveland 1/2. And I have to say, it felt good! Making I'm breaking out of my mid-winter blues. Today was XT and yoga, which reminds me how little flexibility I have. (In so many ways...;) )

Cecilia, Jeff & Betsy - awesome job! :woohoo: :yay: :woohoo:

I was thinking about you this morning Cecilia. It sure was a beautiful day!

I ran 3 miles this morning in 32:08, felt a little sluggish and now I think my family is coming down with something. Hope we get over it soon since both DH and I are training for late this month.

DD had her 10th birthday party today, it went well. I also picked up 354 boxes of Girl Scout cookies yesterday that I have to deliver. Wish me luck!

Another fly by post as between late night calls again - did my first 1 hour run since the Goofy this weekend, I'd had no inclination to run longer than 30 minutes at all, until this weekend when I went out planning to do 40 mins and just kept going, the entries opened for the first half of the season here this morning (May 18th) so tomorrow I will enter that - and after my week's hols training begins again (and finally I will start pulling my weight as a bunny!)

I do however have a minor injury - I have a tiara bruise - this weekend was Sydney's Mardi Gras festival which is a huge parade here full of glitter, dancing (and lots of men in very scary outfits - I won't say any more for fear of offense). So in the spirit of the thing I had my best Princess Tiara on - which is made for the head of a six year old!!! One side is fine, but the other one feels like someone punched me!!!

Hope everyone is okay - at the moment, I only have time to catch up with the posts in gaps between my nightly interviews - and I only work three nights a week so by Thursday I have no clue what anyone is doing. Off on holiday this week too so won't be about for a bit - going to Thailand - via Singapore sadly though I'm only there from about 3pm till 7am - and I won't have a suitcase - so I can't have a WISH meet with Vicky (it is Vicky that's out there now not Leona isn't it?) !!!!

When I return, I have to decide if Disneyland fits into the calender - well actually the budget, it's a lot more expensive to fly that way to London, as I have to get a round the world ticket (uggh, even typing that sounds pricey!) so need ot do maths - thankfully I'm not very good at maths, so I may be able to convince myself of anything!!! . Helen

Lots of people are wondering if they are coming down with something. Its called March madness (and I am NOT talking basketball) You WANT it to be spring and its not really here yet. It makes everyone feel "off." You go out to run and the grass isn't green and the bushes are blooming. The dreariness affects you in strange ways.

Also, some runs and some walks are just plain not pleasant. You feel like you are running up hill when you aren't or you just never get past that first mile blah. It happens. And a lot of time it happens on those short little runs because we didn't spend any time psyching ourself up for the run. Perhaps you didn't eat right the night before, or you just didn't hydrate enough, but chances are, you won't find any reason for it other than it was just one of those runs.

That said, there is a LOT of crud going around out there. If you do get sick, take a least a day to RESTand hydrate. It is not wimpy, it is smart. Your body has amazing healing powers if you allow it to function as it was designed. I can not tell you how many colds and viruses I have managed to ward off by simply planting myself in a chair for the day.

Spring is coming. hang in there!

Cecilia, Jeff & Betsy...Yay!!! Great job you guys! That is awesome!

I did my 4 miler yesterday... in 62 minutes...Apparently I slow Way down when adding that additional mile. Oh well... I got in it. That's the good part!

Hope to get in some XT today w/ the bike!

Have a great day everyone!!!
Stacie

GOOD MORNING TEAM

So I submitted a really long post, or so I thought :confused3 yesterday, wasn't my computer this time. The server maybe. Anyway, here is the condensed version.

Jeff & Cecilia GREAT JOB -- YOU GUYS ROCK!!!
Christa I never responded last week, yes DH back is hurt again, he had to give up his spot in Sarasota 1/2 yesterday which he was well on his way to MAJOR PR'ing!!! Going to call doc today to get appt for another MRI. Once again I am just sad because I have lost my running partner. :headache:

As for me: TRAINING: Is going well, had major good run on treadmill Friday after work cause I was PUMPED up!!! Looks like I will get to build that marina after all!!!! :woohoo:

Speaking of, have to get some work done. BUT I WILL BE BACK LATER !!!

I just need some medicine help from Mel and Stephanie, our resident pharmacists. I am having trouble sleeping, I'm exhausted when I lay down, but I can't fall asleep, I lay awake for literally hours (last night I went to bed at 10:30, didn't fall asleep until close to 2:00) and think and worry about things. I've always had trouble falling asleep, but now it's a million times worse. So, now for my question: is it okay to take Tylenol PM to help me sleep on those nights? I know Tylenol anything is pretty much okay, not sure about taking sleeping pills. If you aren't sure, I'll e-mail my doctor later today, I just don't want him to think I am a druggie!!! Thanks!!!!!

Oh, and for some baby news, I went to the doctor on Friday for a check-up, the heart rate is in the 140's (boy) and my sonogram is scheduled for 3/21!! :goodvibes

I'm off to read the thread, I'll post when I get caught up!

Krista

Morning WISH team! I went to the gym this morning and did 55 minutes on the TM. Tonight is the opening night of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. Tim McGraw is singing. I can't wait! Will singing loudly and off-key count as cross-training? :lmao:

Have a great day everyone!

I think you're right Cecilia.

I think alot of my problem is mental. Go figure! :lmao:

Another tough short run this morning.

I ran 3 miles in 31:28 - good for me, but it felt like I was barely trudging along...
