Wk of Mar 2 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Shan....sending some well wishes on the ankle! :goodvibes Check in when you get a moment and let us know how you are doing!

Don't forget R.I.C.E....Rest, ice, compression, elevation. I also like to add advil or aleve to that mix. But that's a personal choice :). Take care of it and don't sweat taking time off if you need it. You ARE prepared for the big race. Have faith in that and don't push through injury.

Shan, Awww, I do WISH that ankle is ok. RICE is right.

Amy, you are a machine.

Jeff, what a great thing that your little one wants to follow your footsteps. I do hope she has the most fun!

I haven't done the TM today. I tried my hand at washing clothes. I've got them in the washer, folded but not carried up to put away. Progress

Did you see this on the news yet about the 101 yr old man going to do the marathon? Amazing. He's already completed the half. People inspire me daily.

Wow, that is awesome Tiger Lily! Thanks for that story - definitely inspiring!

This made me laugh, though -
Martin says that in the last weekend, he's completed a 13-mile half marathon that took him a little more than five hours. It would have been faster, he says, but he says he stopped for a beer and a cigarette.

Ankle feels OK right now! Must have been all the good vibes you guys were sending me today. :grouphug:

I'm gonna ice it again tonight and see how it feels in the morning before I head out.

To My Training Partners:

THANK YOU :worship: !

Years ago in another life, we lived in Austin, Texas, and I had 3 running buddies. 2 were much faster than I and the other was a perfect match to me. We ran together maybe twice a month, but what we did as a group made my PR's possible in every distance.

For the past year or so, as I've met many of you many times, I've come to feel you are my training buddies. True, we only run together 2 or 3 times a year, always at races (In the words of Carrie: why do I run in Florida? Of course, I get to run with my friends! Wonderful comment Carrie), but when I see results like Jeff's sub-2:20 at Sarasota, and Dana and Steve's sub-4:30 on January 13, plus people posting great workouts, it truly inspires me to train a bit harder. Then when I'm out with my friends at races I can produce a result that both makes me proud, and represents my club well.

So today was my first outdoor run of the season. YES! It was also a scheduled tempo day, so I went to the high school track, ran 1/4 easy warm up, and took of for a 5K. My hope was 26-something. I went through mile 1 in 8:12 and felt okay, although that pace was pushing it. Mile 2 went by in 16:06, and I was sure feeling the pace and stress. I hoped to hold this for 1800 more meters, but I couldn't be certain. Each 400 meters that went by I calculated a likely finishing time, and made sure to leave something in my body for the remaining distance.

I went through 3 miles in 24:03, and finished 5000 meters in 24:51 :scared1: . Honestly, I never imagined at my age I would ever go under 25 for a 5K again. I haven't run a 5K this fast in at least 10 years. So this was my over-50 PR (actually an over-40 PR for that matter). To say I'm feeling good about this is an understatement. In fact, I figured it was sufficient reason to get out a bottle of champagne.

I picked up this running thing again 3.5 years ago, and I'm still making progress and improving. Listening to people I like and respect get good race and training results makes me want to get out there and do the same thing.

This applies to people in the club who are faster than me, run pretty much the same pace as me, and especially those I love who finish a bit behind me in races. You all improve and surprise yourselves, which excites me and makes me want to match your achievements.

Thank you. I am so ready for the Minnie 15K and seeing my running mates. Can we do it this coming weekend?

Craig

Chi running DVD:

I'm waiting for a training buddy of mine, who is trying to locate his copy of the Chi Running DVD. :happytv:

Once I get it and watch it, I'd be willing to mail it to the next WISHER who wants to view it. The one condition is, when you're done with it, you have to mail it to the next person, and keep it going. Think of it as a traveling library.

I'll post once I get it.

Craig - YOU ROCK!!! :cheer2: :worship:

Jeff - great idea with the Chi video. I'd love to be part of that. Chad has an autographed copy of the book, but I don't think he ever did read it.

Speaking of swapping - I have a bunch of marathon-related books that I would love to mail to someone(s) that would like to read them. I offered up Dean K.'s book awhile back and had no takers. If anyone would like to read it, PM my your addy and I will get it right out. I have quite a few more running books and once I get through them, I'd be happy to pass them on as well.

You would also be helping me. I am going to majorly declutter this house this spring if it kills me! So, if it's not nailed down, it's getting eBayed, yard saled, donated to Salvation Army, or tossed. I'd rather pass on something to someone who would appreciate than do any of the above though.

Oh, and on a training note - I did get in a 7 miler last night. I was exhausted and it wasn't a fabulous time. But, I got 'er done. And that's all that really matters. :thumbsup2

Way to go Kristi. They do not award style points on long runs. Getting in is all that matters. Congratulations.

And by the way, I am feeling that 5K right now. Getting out of bed tomorrow morning should be a trip. I hope Martha doesn't film it and post it on You-Tube.

Craig

WOW CRAIG! :worship: Awesome run! I'm thrilled for you and can only hope to run that in my next 5K. You are an inspiration.

Kristi...Great job with your 7 Miler!

Aloha Jeff....What a great idea. I'm TOTALLY in for the Chi Running DVD.

Sooo...as for me....after a visit to the doctor about my hip today I'm on the IR for a brief time. Actually..I feel SOOO much better after seeing my own personal miracle-worker/medicine man/guru...my awesome chiropractor. He got me through goofy and I stopped seeing him on a weekly basis after i finished the big marathon weekend in January. Well...obviously that was a BAD idea ;). So back to weekly visits with the best chiropractor in the world. And per his advice I laid off the bike trainer, spin class, pilates, yoga, running, ski machine, etc etc etc today. *sigh* Being smart stinks sometimes.

Craig--Wow, that is a smokin' 5k! Scott and I will be in the group to go sub-2 at the half in January--my fastest half to date (actually halfway of a full) was 1:57--would love to get sub 1:50!

Shan--take care of that ankle!

Amybeth--take care of that hip! And yes, being smart sometimes is not very fun!

Kristi--I've read DeanK's book--what else ya got? Great job on the 7 miler!

No training for me today (guess I should just say running and not training--still haven't gotten any races on my calendar) had to stay at work 2 hours later than expected. Don't they know it cuts into my workout time! geez!

Just wanted to mention that I bought some Balega brand socks from Fleet Feet. Love them! If you're looking for something new I would suggest them.

Kristen

Thanks Kristen, I guess I'm gonna need to get over there and get me some MORE new socks. The dry wicking ones from Wallyworld are cotton, so maybe not the best. :sad2: I want to go over there and look at their Garmin's. We tried going Saturday, but they were absolutely swamped. I will look for those socks while I'm there.

Thanks everyone for your sock input. I think my peeling feet are mainly due to my cotton socks. I guess I'm evolving into a "real" runner bit by bit. Thanks for all your help. Y'all are the bestest! :grouphug:

Oh, Yeah, Congrats Craig! That is awesome!!!!

Craig - That is a great time and pace. You will be smokin up the course in May. Keep up the great work.

Timmy went back for the follow up visit and it was confirmed that his ears are still infected. :sad2: Apparently when he finished the medication, it came back. We are now on round two and go back in 2 more weeks. If the same pattern holds as happened with Billy, they will still be infected and we will go to the final round of drugs (which I thought they should have started with anyways :rolleyes1 ). I think the doctor needs some new toy to keep this up.

Bill

Bill - Poor Timmy! Lots of :wizard: for his little ears!

Stephanie - I have 4-5 more running books, I just haven't read them myself yet. They are the only perk I have ever gotten from working here! Probably since I am the only one who would be interested in them. Anyway, once I get another one read, I will let you know. One of them is "26.2 Marathon Stories."

Dean's book has been claimed, btw.

Even after a rather uninspired 3 mile run today, I came into work and signed up for the 2009 half-marathon. I must be nuts! Something about that 95% full stat that got to me. But then I figured, well, I'll really need a little warm weather vacation by then, and if I can't run the whole thing, I can always walk. And I will have an Annual Pass (thanks to my Minnie visit in May), so what the heck.

I've lost it, I've truly lost it. My only consolation--lots of you guys have lost it, too!;)

Now I just have to tell my DH..............

Maura

Hi everyone!

I have been very bad since my race on Sunday. I blame my new computer. :goodvibes Its just so speedy fast!

Shan - How was the ankle when you ran on it today? You are going to start feeling fantom pains as you get closer to the race but phantoms don't go "pop". I hope everything is okay.

Craig - Where on utube will I find that video? I could have used that laugh to that on Monday and Tuesday since I was a hurting puppy too.

Bill- I have been through the endless ear infection thing both personally and with kids. It is no fun at all. I have had 3 ear surgeries and both my girls had tubes put in because of ear infections. Dd11 is allergic to almost every antibiotic so it made treating her very tricky. I wish you luck. the good news is that spring is coming and ear infections tend to be less frequent in warmer months.

Oh Socks - I use Balga socks. I love them.

Off to run!
Cecilia

I've lost it, I've truly lost it. My only consolation--lots of you guys have lost it, too!;)

Now I just have to tell my DH..............

You might want to hold off on telling your husband too much about "us guys." Break him in slowly. I know my wife has been slow to accept that I have a lot of friends "on the internet" (many of whom I haven't met yet) who are crazy/have lost it (they're like me:upsidedow ). Oh, and these crazy people I've never met say I can do this marathon thing and we'll all have fun at WDW limping around after.

Amy, good vibes for your hip! :wizard:

Good for you Maura!

Bill, hope his ears clear up soon! :goodvibes
I agree with Cecilia, once summer comes the ear infections should be less. My youngest went thru two sets of tubes in her younger years.

Cecilia, ankle feels OK! I just got back from a 6 miler (1:05:02) and it felt fine. I'm icing it right now, though just to be safe. I'm gonna switch to my new shoes on my next run for the ING! :woohoo:

Yo!

Seems many of us are getting in some better runs this week, which is way cool.

I have to say AlohaJeff, you honor our shared name. 6 miles in 57 minutes? That is a great pace, especially for 85 degrees on the beach. So you think that's slow? Nah, you totally rock. :thumbsup2

Carrie: I'll have some more Lenna-isms coming up - she's been a wee bit maniacal lately! I guess that happens when you turn the big FIVE.

Liz: Jacque Penney? No! have not heard of that one!:rotfl: I will have to remember that when we go there. Ever notice that places are now known better by their nicknames? IHOP, WallyWorld, Mickey D's, Taco Smell, DQ, etc.? Do you know some more?

Shan: Glad yer ankle is getting better - you must have felt the WISH Love.

Craig: Your 3 miles in 24:03 is, well, in the words of my DD15, "DUDE!" Geez, I need to get offa my rear and get some speed-training in!

Maura: you signed up for the half? Great! You'll have a large contingent of WISHers to meet up with before the race that morning (at a frigid 4am).

Take Care, y'all!

- Jeff
