Wk of Mar 2 - WISH Walking/Running Club

I'm from AL. I just bought some Hanes dri socks. It said on the package that they wick moisture away. I've been running in cotton socks. Could that have been my problem? It was really warm (75 degrees) when I ran yesterday. Can heat make a difference?
Yup. DIdn't finish my thought on where you were from. The heat will make your feet sweat more. The wicking socks should help a lot!

Yeah, that's where the al in aldisneygrl comes from. ;) Real original, huh? :rotfl2:

Now these new socks I have are still cotton, but they did say they would keep your feet dry, and they had more cushion in them. Is there a better style of sock out there that I could try? I was thinking it may be the friction of my foot, the sock and the shoe. :confused3 Maybe I just need tougher feet? I'm a newbie runner, so they have never "tread" this way before. :rotfl2:

Hey Guys,
I’m a newbie on this thread. I am relatively new to running.

A little history> I was diagnosed with Cutaneous  T-Cell Lymphoma in Oct/Nov of 06. Went through chemo last year. Luckily the type chemo I’m taking (Rituxim) is not that bad of a chemo (not that any are 'good'). The bad part was I had to take mega doses of prednisone along with the chemo. A side effect of this was I ate everything in sight. Gained about 30lbs. Then I found out after my regular chemo that I need chemo every three months to keep the T-cells happy. All this while turning 50!

Well so happens I have a DS and BIL that are runners. She talked me into walking to maintain my health and lose some of that extra lbs. Long story short- we ended up doing the marathon relay at Myrtle Beach this year. I did my 5 miles at a 13 minute pace (oh yeah-I had to have a Garmin after I got started). Well we were so proud of our times and ready to train for next year when we found out, no more relay. Well one thing has lead to another and we said heck, if we are gonna do a ½ then why not Disney.
So I’ve got 2 rounds of chemo in April, July, October…. I figure that training is a great way to keep me going, lose the weight and have my Disney too! I’m up to doing the 5 miles at a 11:40 pace on my best days. Did 7 miles today just because we registered for the Disney ½ yesterday. Anyway glad to meet everyone and see all the different styles and personalities here. Thanks for letting me be a part.

Are you still walking or are you running now also?

Congratulations on not letting your illness stop you. Your courage is very inspirational.

Welcome! :flower3: Congrats on all that you have and are accomplishing. Looking forward to meeting you in Janaury!

Just wanted to mention that I bought some Balega brand socks from Fleet Feet. Love them! If you're looking for something new I would suggest them.

Well, I need to hit the showers. Made it to the gym and had a fairly successful run/walk. I'm slightly discouraged with my time but I know that will come with practice and consistency. Patience is not one of my virtues though!:upsidedow

Welcome MickeyT! :goodvibes

I just bought some socks at Target - Champion brand. I really like them. They're short, but come up a tad on the heel. Wicking.

I wasn't using any kind of special socks before and have never had problems with blisters, but my poor DH's feet are whacked!

Shan: Good for you for running even when you feel sluggish, making sure you're getting in your training. That's what runners do, you know! ;) And I think delivering--or helping to deliver--that many Girl Scout cookies should count as XT!

Helen: Tiara bruise! :rotfl: Congrats on your hour run, and I really do hope you get to run DL.

Cecilia: You're right, there's definitely March madness going around these parts. Thanks for giving this newbie some perspective on how the seasons might affect my running! :thumbsup2

Stacie: WTG on the 4 miler & figuring out your pacing per mile! I do hope you've gotten some good advice on the knee--meanwhile, take it easy.

Angie: Whoo-hoo on the marina news!! No wonder you were pumped. I'm sorry about your DH, but hopefully the MRI will provide good news or new insights.

Krista: Great news about the baby and having scheduled your sonogram appt. I'm sorry you're having problems sleeping.

Heather: I just knew you'd have a great time at the Houston show; American Idol just can't compare to Tim McGraw!

Carrie: I'm impressed you even tried the Chi techniques on the run. I'm still doing the form exercises & trying to incorporate some techniques into my walking. My core protests, too! Hopefully your yoga helped alleviate your pulled cleaning muscle--I don't have one of those--and will work your core as well. I second the huzzahs for the challenge.

Jen: Glad to hear your quilting retreat went well. It seems like your winter is never-ending, though, and that means you need a retreat to WDW! And you can't drop tasty hints about your life--arrests, shenanigans, expulsion--without a follow-up with details. Can you? :confused3 ;)

Liz: That shin pain sounds horrible--I hope the stretching helps & your 5K is uneventful.

Allie: I've never heard of that condition--never heard of a lot of things--but I'm glad there's no pain. Btw, cotton kills--as you'll hear over and over and over again. :lmao:

Bill: Yeah for you and Timmy! You're both on your way to recovery! I'm so happy for you that I don't even begrudge you your weather (okay, maybe just a little).

Stephanie: Wow--no wonder you were on a TM!

MickeyT: Welcome & wow! You story and you are both so inspiring! :worship: I look forward to getting to know you here on WISH and cheering you on at the 1/2! Encourage your DS and BIL to join us, too; we're all family here.

Kristen: I'm so with you--I'm even impatient trying to practice patience. (And don't ask me about moderation.) Good job on sticking with your plan, though.

As for me: I apologize if there are awkward or even obscene typos in this post; I burnt my finger cooking tonight and am now typing one-handed. I don't know why I'm even allowed in the kitchen when there's a Thai place right around the corner. :rotfl:

I had another great run yesterday, and since the weather was especially pleasant I'm fully on board with Cecilia's March madness idea. Yesterday was sunny and in the 60s; I was bouncing around like Tigger. Today, rain all day & flood conditions, with snow expected tonight. And I'm more Eeyore than Eeyore, although I did manage to squeeze in soma extra yoga since they dovetail nicely with those Chi running exercises. I'm hoping the local meteorologists are wrong about tomorrow--what do you think the chances are of that?

MickeyT, Welcome to the WISH Team! You have an incredible story and a fantastic attitude. I look forward to meeting you in January.

Allie, the running store near me has started carrying Balega exclusively. I like them. I've tried Thorlos and do not like them at all since they were too thick. I really like the Wigwam socks that I had gotten from the running store. I WISH they would still carry these along with the Balegas. Anyway...the thing that seems to be consistently coming up in my post is I get my socks at the running store. Have you checked your running store? For the longer events I've just begun wearing the Injinji toe socks that you can get from REI dot com. I really love these and use them now for all my long runs. No toe blisters when I wear them.

I've learned the mantra about if it's cotton it's rotton and I do make sure to not use cotton socks ever again while running.

DKP, ow on the burned fingers. Dial out...that's what I like to do when it's my turn to cook!:yay:

Today I managed 35 min TM and stretching. I'm creeping up on the getting better. Doc said I couldn't use TM until tomorrow--what's in a day. I didn't run though. I'm being really good about that rule.

More of a run/walk run/walk. When I got it the time down below the 12:00 mile pace it is more running than walking. (If you could see my 'graceful' stride you may wonder what the heck it is!):rotfl:

Hi All!

The thread this week is really entertaining, from Tiara bruises, 3-inch thick ice hazards to the Sock Discussion. I love this gang :grouphug:

I, too, just get the Champion socks from Target (pronounced Tar-jay, of course), but I get the wicking/antimicrobial version. I've used them for a year, rotating out with new ones about every 4 months. I don't know if the women's socks are the same as the guy's?????

Anyway, glad Timmy's better, Krista's got a SG appt, and folks got in some great runs this week already. So Cool!

See ya!
Jeff

Good Evening everyone!

MickeyT Welocme. You are an inspiration. Ok so when the rest of us feel bad remember that we have one person battling cancer and another running around Iraq. Hopefully that will give me perspective!

As for socks. I have some "good" ones (wigwam and Under Armour) that I wear for my "Longer" runs :rotfl: And I wear Champions the rest of the time.
I want some more "running" socks but I have to admit the running stores intimidate me..... All those "skinny" professional looking runners!

And was there a female Wish Member wearing your Goofy Shirt at the Alpharetta Marathon this past Sunday. Randy just told me talked with someone about the races. (OF course if I hadn't told him, he would have had NO idea what the Goofy was, but I know he's impressed....Even if he does think the name fits!)

I ht the TM tonight for 3 miles in 38.50 so not too bad. Accoding to my schedule tomorrow is 35 minutes cross. Just have to figrue something out!

Have a great Wed everyone!

Debra - Ouch! Yeah, I cooked twice this year. Burned myself 50% of the time. WIll remind dh of that if he ever thinks to tell me it's my turn again. ;) Oh, BTW, I'm still reading before bed. HAven't done exercises yet. Just started trying to use a couple techniques anyway. I did look at my shoulders, hips adn ankles before I left teh house, though. Oh, and I tried about 2 steps of walking like there's a ople sticking out of your ankles. He's wrong. You cannot practice that at work!

Allie - lol. At least your name can eb pronounced. Mine's original, yet less than memoprable and just a jumble of letters.

Lily - DOn't make me tell teh doc. ;) So, you're working out every day now? Cool!

Jeff - SO, you're seeing why Mel loves us? ;) BTW, love your Lenna-isms!

Kristen - I'm great with bweing patient. Just as long as I get what I want NOW! :lmbo:

Carol - Good point. I'll have to remember that before I whine about the TM. Not saying taht I won't whine, but I will think about others who have it worse first. ;)

Did my 75 min of very gentle yoga. yeah, after my gentle cd, I realize that my instructor's really gentle. WOrks for me, though.

Hey WISHERS,

Today, I cranked out 6 miles in 57 minutes. Sorry so slow, it was 85 degrees hot out, so we cruised. (LOL, I know you're all hating me right now.) :rotfl2: I ran on the sand of Waikiki Beach, making the workout a little more strenuous.

When I got home, with very little prodding on my part, Princess #1 signed up for a May kid's tri-athalon. Her very first tri! (She did 1/2 of the 2007 Great Aloha Run).

Whoooo hoooo, I'm excited to help her train. It's a pretty easy kids race. For her age group, she'll swim 50 meters in the ocean, bike 1.1 mile, and run 0.3 mile. Very dooable for her.

My Honolulu Marathon training group meets for the first time this season on Sunday. I'll be a volunteer staff member, helping guide new members to finishing their first marathon in December.

Have a great week, and safe training everyone.

I too bought the Target/Champion wicking socks and noticed mine were Made In USA!!! So unusual these days.

Good morning, everyone and welcome MickeyT! You're an inspiration. May your upcoming chemos be easy.

Nothing terribly newsworthy to report. Did 5 miles on Tuesday at a 11:32 pace. So far so good with mixing in some running with my walks.

Have a great day.

Hi Wishers

I've been busy and haven't had time to post. Wow...going to be tough to catch up LOL!

Jeff, Betsey and Cecilia....Congratulations on great races all around. :thumbsup2

Mickey T...Welcome :). You're an inspiration...so nice to have you on the team.

Lily...You're recovery is amazing!

Debra: OUCH! on the burned finger. With good Thai nearby...never a reason to cook ;). Mmmmm...Thai food....me likey!

Carrie: I tried the arm swing Chi Running thing too. Not sure if it worked or not LOL. :confused3 But my breathing was very relaxed. I'm trying to incorporate changes but old habits die hard!

PD and gentle hugs to everyone under the weather or fighting illness!

As for me...training has been fine. I seem to be cycling more than running these days..my run mileage remains in a bit of a slump. Yesterday I *WAY* overdid it and now my hip is sore. Taught two classes of Pilates, worked with my Pilates trainer for 90 minutes, did the bike trainer for 30 minutes at a fast clip then ran 3 miles. I ended up doing way too much of my own classes...so now my body isn't happy. I'm hoping spin class will work out the legs today and ease the soreness in the hip. :headache:

Hey everyone!

MickeyT - Welcome and you are an inspiration. Looking foward to getting to know you and meet in Jan (I'm doing the 1/2 too).

Jeff - I thought my husband was the only one who called it Tar-jay. So at your house is it also Jacque Penney? :lmao:

I've also found the Champion socks to be my fave.

Got in 2 miles on the TM last night. Not at the speed I wanted but started out too fast and the shin pain started again so stepped off, stretched and slowed it back down. Much better.

Have a great day!

Morning everyone! I did 30 minutes on the elliptical this morning. I have a dentist appointment at lunch time, but it should be very uneventful compared to WWDave's adventures. I will try to channel WWDave, be strong, and try my best not to bite the dentist.

Jeff- Did you grow up in Hawaii or are you one of those lucky ones who found a job & moved there?

Have a great day everyone!

Just got back from a 2 mile run, 21:06. Felt my left ankle POP! and now I'm sitting here icing it. :headache:

I will not get hurt before my half!

:wizard: Hope that ankle's ok. Remember, at this point, you have done your real trining. If your ankle hurts at all to run on, yo are better off resting it to heal than putting in training time.
