Wk of Apr 1--WISH Walking/Running Club

Hi, everyone! I am so sorry I have been MIA. I have been working all sorts of crazy hours at all times of the day and night (ask DH about me wandering in to sleep a couple of hours at 3 a.m.) It has been 2 weeks of H-E-double hockey sticks, but I am finally through the storm and now just trying to catch up.
Thank you to all my WISH buddies who kept me "company" and "entertained" at various hours of the night over the past 2 weekends!
Hoping to catch up on all the WISH posts, but here's what I remember right now:
Bill & Lynnda and Billy -- THinking of you guys and hoping all went very smoothly today. Can't wait to "meet" our new little WISHer.

Sunny -- I have been thinking about you so much. Sending you a  and pixiedust: and :goodvibes:

Christa -- that picture is adorable!! :lovestruc

Judy -- You made me cry! I am so glad I helped you find your way to my "happy place" -- among the WISH team members. But you have to pat yourself on the back, sweetie! Remember that no one but you could have stuck it out, stuck to the training and come as far as you have. No matter how much you might have liked being here, if you weren't willing to work hard and put in the steps, you could not have achieved all that you have. I am so happy to call you my friend and my teammate. I am so proud of you!

Craig -- as always, your post struck a chord in my heart and my soul. I remember so well 2 years ago, thinking there was no way I could achieve what I'd set out to do -- the 1/2 marathon. You and many others here encouraged me to keep working toward that goal, and you made the whole experience so edifying and enjoyable. I cannot stress enough to our new teammates how important the journey is. And there are so many who have helped me on this journey over the past 2+ years, but somehow, my friend, yours are the words that I so often call to mind in the difficult moments. I thank you for being a voice of wisdom and encouragement. You are one special man and we are all better for knowing you.

Ooohhh, I am so impressed with all this amazing training and the awesome race performances. I am really looking forward to getting back into a regular training program. So much seems to have gotten away from me over the past 2 weeks, including my diet  and my ability to keep up with the posts here :sad1: and my DS13 who somehow managed to grow taller than me while I was otherwise distracted!!! YOWZA!!!!!!

Training report: speed work. 3 miles, 30:53, 2 min at 10:30 mile pace, 2 min at 10:00 mile pace. I cannot believe I did that! Whee for me!!

Carrie: pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust:

Cam: glad to see you back!!!

Bill: sooooooo? How is everyone doing?

To everyone who had a great workout: woo-hoo!!

To all those thinking about doing the ToT race in the fall: DO IT!!!

Cindy - Flying with you! Isn't it great? Glad you had such a good run!

Colleen
- Got that same email. Isn't it cruel?

Disnutt - SoccerDog is being dramatic. She'd originally planned to do the Half with me, then decided she doesn't want to do it. I suggested to her this morning that I might go to WDW solo in January. Fireworks? OMG!!! WISH friends in Canada probably heard the explosion! I don't think I'll be coming alone...

Jackie

I've told Lynnda and Bill good form in his own post, so it's worth it again, so good form!

I have to admit I'm more excited right now about my running than I've been in many a year. Maybe it's the progress so many people are making, maybe it's the Halloween race, maybe it spring and outdoor running, but I am ready to go and then some.

Cam, I have to tell you that you and Rhonda made an appearance in my sophomore finance class last Thursday. In a tangential discussion of means and standard deviations, I drew up the likely distribution of finishing times for the Boston Marathon in 2 weeks and the Disney Marathons that I run. I asked them why I chose Disney, and they correctly pointed out that the average runner was slower, making me look faster. All true. After this I talked about the early runners and the runners at the end at Disney, and without naming names I told them of my close relationship with the 2 ladies who came in at the end, the many trials and tribulations they went through to get that result, and how proud I was of both of them for sucking it up and earning that finish. I didn't go into great detail, but without exception a bunch of 19 and 20 years olds showed the appropriate response that anyone who comes across the finish of a marathon has done something pretty special. I hope you don't mind my talking about this with my students, but I must admit, I'm pretty proud of bucking you up in those not so long ago times. You wanted it so much, but rightly it looked so daunting. Anything I and others did to help you makes us all feel good, but remember who did all the work. Not us, you. You earned the result, we were just there to be pleased for what you did.

As the shirt says DLF>DNF>DNS. All my life I never wanted to be that guy who at age 70 said, "I wish I had tried that." The day I'm not willing to try something fun, and maybe a bit dumb, is the day I'm done living. Hopefully that day is a long, long way away.

Good for you Judy, that's a huge relief. Now get out there and bust the Minnie.

I biked 35 hard minutes today and my legs felt so strong the entire time. Maybe I'm actually getting stronger, fitter, and faster. What a nice thought.

Craig

If you want to read about a guy who did a 100 miler (yes you read it right...100 miles) in less than 24 hours then go to

Scroll down a bit and click on Umstead 100 mile trail race! Joe is the guy who posted the report! WOW! He is da man.

Bill and Lynnda – congrats!

Martha – great job on your training run…sounds like a great 3 miles and way to pick up the speed on the last 2!

Craig – thanks for the inspiration and I’m glad to hear you’ve got that extra motivational push going on these days. It’s a great feeling and I’ve been having it a lot lately too…I just hope it sticks around through January so I can finish this race and maybe even at a decent time. Since you seem to have a great deal of knowledge, would you care to take a shot at what a realistic finishing time for me might be? I’ve got a pretty good base right now and can run 8+ miles comfortably at a 10:00 min pace. I’m going to incorporate some speedwork and maintain a good base through the end of the summer until the real distance buildup begins. At least that’s my plan right now. I’m just wondering what to aim for…of course, like many my main goal is just to finish but if I could have a time goal too and meet it, that would be awesome.

Kelley – great idea rescheduling your LW around the holidays and travel…it’s better to get it in early than not at all

Becky – Welcome! I’m rather new to this board/thread as well but I already love it and I think it’s a great place for us newbies to get advice, support, and encouragement :)

I’m not sure if I posted in response to some of the comments on last week’s thread but just in case:

Mel-thanks so much for setting up that discount for us!

Got in some good training yesterday – 4 miles on the treadmill due to a rainy day. I finished 4.2 miles in 40:40 and that included my initial warmup of about 0.2 miles. I ran about 25 min of that at a 9:15 pace and the initial 15 minutes were working up to that pace. It felt great but I’m ready to get back into the outdoors…hopefully tonight for my 5 miler :)

We have only done a few races and no fulls yet just two 1/2's but I would definately say with the really good base that you have, and such a long time to train that you could expect to do awesome. When we were training for the 1/2 a lot of our shorter runs 6 miles or less were done at about a 10 minute pace, we NEVER broke 9 before our first 1/2. Our long runs averaged an 11 minute pace and we did the race at about a 10.5 min pace.

I would definately check out runnersworld training calculator

http://www.runnersworld.com/cda/trainingcalculator/0,7169,s6-238-277-279-0-0-0-0,00.html

It asks you for a recent race time and then will calculate estimated finish times for other races and reccommended training paces. Even if you don't have a recent race time just put in an average run time i.e. 8 miles - 10 minute pace

angie :)

I actually ran today!!!! I'm not sure how far I went (probably around 4 miles) I did 20mins out and back.

Hello Everyone!

Cindy - Great pace! I'm sure chocolate cake is an excellent pre-run snack. Or post-run... or mid-run! That kind of reminds me of a story I read last fall about a local running club that had a doughnut 5k - They got to subtract 2 minutes off their time for every doughnut they ate during the run. I think the winner only ate 1 doughnut. Lost opportunities!

Laurie - Great job on your run. Having the last mile be the fastest is what turns a good run into a great run. BTW, I've been to Martinsville a couple of times (once was a wash-out and I had to eat the tickets because I had to be back to work the next day :headache: ). It's one of my favorite places to watch a race.

Martha - You are flying!! Be sure to tell Craig where to meet you after the race because while he is expounding on all things philisophical you are going to leave him in the dust!

I took one of my WISH shirts out for a test run tonight...

My run report: BY THE NUMBERS

7.54 - Average pace in miles per minute
5.2 - Miles run
4 - Tacos ate IMMEDIATELY prior to running :scared1:
2 - # of DD's that told me I "glowed in the dark" as I ran down the street.
2 - # of dogs that had an unnatural reaction to the phosporescent glow.
1 - # of surprised adolescent boys that screamed like a little girl as I ran past.
1 - # of Amphipod Xinglet reflective vests that looked dark in comparison to shirt.
? - # of calls to Homeland Security reporting an erie glow on the horizon west of Washington D.C.

Ok, I'm going to try to catch up here.

Cam—Hi! glad to see the storm’s almost over at work for you. Hope you can get back to “normal life,” whatever that means, right?

Martha—wow, great pace! Way to go!

Craig—more and more, your posts just make me smile. It’s like reading Chicken Soup for the Soul (which, no, I DO NOT read, by the way—I just now realized I was starting to sound like a very sappy male  ). But anyway, I really am enjoying your posts.

Mel—good job on the run! Are you recovering ok from your adventure race?

Mike (Optimator)--you crack me up! Great post!

Carrie—hope you feel better today. It couldn’t possibly be due to the temperature swings of plus or minus 50 degrees we’ve been seeing, could it?? :confused3

Laurie—welcome back! Glad you guys had a good time at the race. Nice job on the “first run back.” I wouldn’t worry too much about your last mile being faster—I think that’s much better than your first mile being the fastest and then slowing after that.

Judy—YEAH!!! I’m so glad that you’ll be able to do Minnie. Way to go, girl!

Christa—so are you going to run as Spot for the Disney Halloween race?? :thumbsup2

Cindy—way to go for getting out there on that run!

Dave—Hi! Hope training’s going well for you.

Colleen—nice job on the 10 miler! Please, please promise you won’t detest me if I end up not running MCM this year. Let’s just blame it on Craig. :rolleyes1

Well, I should probably go get some work done now. Hi to everyone I missed! Hope training’s going well. I’ve managed to get in a decent amount of biking the past few weeks with my running, which I’m really happy about. Maybe it’s just the fact that it’s warmer outside so biking doesn’t feel like an exercise in Arctic climate adaptation. :) But I do feel like the runs have been easier now that I can keep up with biking and lifting. Now to just get back to the pool for some laps in the near future….

Have a great Wednesday, guys!

Steve

Morning team! Got in a 4 miler on the TM last night in 35:40. We had some pretty crazy storms here last night,so wasn't taking my chances outside. Today will be an easy/short run and some weights while DD is at gymnastics. Is packing considered xtraining??? If so,then I'm getting some xtraining in today as well!

Mike(optimator)--you must have an iron stomach! 4 tacos!!:scared1: Oh, and your post had me:rotfl:

melr--WTG on getting out there!

Martha--great speed workout!

Kelley--Have fun in Ft Myers. My SIL lives there--but instead of visiting her this weekend, she's driving up to meet us in Siesta Key. Goodluck getting your LW in before your trip

Christa--What a cute doggie you make!!!

Steve--sounds like your training is going great!

Well, I should get off of here and get ready for the gym! Have a great "Hump" day all!! 2 days until vacation!!!!!!:dance3:

Bill & Lynda-- Congratulations! What a precious baby:cloud9: Big Bro looks proud as a peacock!

Carrie-- My shirts arrived! Thanks so much for another valiant effort:thumbsup2

Still battling LTO, but I actually got up at 4:30AM this morning and ran on my new TM. For some reason, I can get up 4AM without a thought for LRs on weekends but the thought of starting a business day 1.5hrs earlier is:scared1: Anyhoo, ran 5.5m. Love the TM.

OT: It was this time last year that my fitness and health took a nose dive, resulting in the first bout of pneumonia mid-May '06. I blame it all on beyond bearable stress that I was under at work (80+ hours, first panick attack in my life, etc). Well, I usually can't say much, but this made it to the public domain. This is what I was working on. Major disclaimer: I had nothing to do with the genious end of the project. We basically created a "brain" for Fido for a particular mission. But it was very rewarding to see it in the news this week:

Fido

So here I am again, stressed to the max over another project.

Sunny

Good morning Wish Team!!! Happy Hump Day! :cool1: Last night I had 40 minutes on tap (during the week, I have 2 mileage runs and 1 timed run), we were supposed to get some pretty strong storms last night. When I got home at 5:30, the sky was dark, but it wasn't raining or thundering and lightening, so I decided to see how far Hines and I could get before the storm hit and I had to move it in to the treadmill. We got 10 minutes in (.91 miles) when I saw lightening on the horizon. I could have probably done another lap of the neighborhood (about 10 minutes), as it wasn't raining yet, but I don't really like messing with lightening. :) So the last 30 minutes were on the treadmill, I did 2.75 miles with a total of 3.66 miles in 40 minutes. I still have some pain in my legs, but only when I run, never at any other time. And when I run faster, it doesn't hurt, so I guess that means I have to start picking up the pace! I have xt today at the Community Center where I'll probably bike and definitely lift weights.

Cam--I'm glad that work is letting up some for you and you can get back to your family and training.

Craig--I have to agree with Stephen, I really enjoy your posts too, they are so thought-provoking. You're right, I don't want to live my life thinking "I wish I would have...." or "I wonder what that would have been like". So I guess that means you'll see Stephen and I in October. :)

Mike/Optimator--:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: By the way, did I miss the post where you talked about your 18 miler? I know Kathy said it was good, but that's all I ever heard. How was it?

Kristin--I think you are in excellent shape and will rock the marathon in January. I think you could safely shoot for a sub 4:40 marathon. But seriously don't put too much emphasis on your time goal, your #1 goal should be to cross that finish line. Of course we're going to set time goals for ourselves because that's human nature, but I hate for you to set a 4:40 time goal, run the marathon in 4:50 and then be disappointed and feel like you failed because you didn't meet your time goal when in reality you just ran a freaking marathon!

Melissa--How are you feeling today? Still sore and tired? Awesome job on getting 4 miles in.

Martha--You are very fast! I am so excited for you because I know you are going to do so great at Minnie and blow every goal you set out of the water. You are the perfect example of what a little hard work, determination, and elbow grease can do for a person. I can't wait to read your race report.

Cindy--I see nothing wrong with chocolate cake as a pre-run meal. Think of all the energy you got from the sugar! Great run. :)

SoccerDog--I can't wait to meet you in January!!! I wouldn't let my Mom go to WDW with me either. :)

Colleen--Awesome job on your 10 miler!! :woohoo: :woohoo: It sounds like you still got it! I am so sorry that you aren't able to run the Flying Pig with us, but I understand that you want to be with your daughter.

Stephanie--I definitely think you can count packing as xt! Have a great trip, I wish I were going to FL!

I know I didn't get everyone, so to those I missed:  . I'll be back later. :)

Sunny - that is so cool! :thumbsup2 And try not to get too stressed out, ok?

I still don't have much to contribute. I finally can walk normally again though! I was going to wait until tomorrow to start working out again. I may do some light walking today while Zack is doing his gym class at the Y though. His class takes place in the center of the track, so it would be easy to keep an eye on him as I walk.

Sunny - very cool!

Thanks for asking but I didn't post about it. It was a good run though. 18 miles at around an 8:30 mpm pace. I kind of had an internal goal of seeing if I could do all 18 without walking any and was able to achieve that. Every split was within 15-20 seconds with negative splits for the last 5-6 miles.

Now that I've proven to myself that I can do that, my goal for the rest of my long runs is actually simulate walking through the water stops. I haven't mastered the run/drink combo so end up drinking very little and gagging quite a lot.

Take care everyone.

Colleen--Awesome job on your 10 miler!! :woohoo: :woohoo: It sounds like you still got it! I am so sorry that you aren't able to run the Flying Pig with us, but I understand that you want to be with your daughter.

. :)

Krista, come closer... SHHH!... Don't tell anyone, but I really don't want to go to this girl scout camp!:rolleyes1 I would much prefer hanging out with the Pig group. (Camping with 15 seven year old girls in the great outdoors is not my idea of fun! I am sure there will be a lot of DRAMA! )

Hey Steve, no problem about MCM, there will be many others.

Mike, I enjoyed your "by the numbers".:rotfl:

Stephanie, good speed on that treadmill.:)

Speaking of treadmills, Sunny, did you set up/assemble the treadmill by yourself?

Melissa, yeah on your 4 miles. What race is next for you?

Colleen

Kristin--something Krista just posted jogged my memory about "goals" for a 1st marathon. I was training and was running much faster than I had originally thought I could. So, my goal went from just finishing to finishing under 4:30. Then I got sick, missed my 20 miler, then had some pretty bad foot pain and was a complete basketcase. Since I changed my original goal of just finishing, I was all upset b/c I didn't think I could now make the new goal I placed in front of me. With a lot of support from the WISH team and my wonderful father, I went back to the original goal of just finishing. My spirits went up, training got back on track, and then I ended up finishing ahead of that 4:30 goal too! I guess from my experience I would just have an ultimate goal to finish your 1st--and then if you want to set a secondary time goal, go for it--but that way if life gets in the way or the weather on race day is less than desirable, you won't be disappointed! Hope that made sense!:goodvibes
