My daughter will be 6 in June, but is tall for her age and is always is about 1 size up from age which means we are leaving 4-6x and going into the world of 7-14 clothes.

I used to get our smocked/dressy items at a boutique store, dinner and going someplace nice, but not quite dressy from Belk, Dillards (Department Stores) and our everyday play from Kohls and Target.

I've checked all of these places to prepare for spring/summer, but I don't like any of the clothes in the 7-14 sizes (well the boutique doesn't even carry 7-14.) AT the other stores, all of the clothes in this age group are either too grown up looking or sloppy.

She's only 6. I still want her to look like the little girl that she is.

Where can I find cute clothes for girls in this size range.

Have you checked Gymboree? I have also had some luck at Children's place.

I also dress my Daughter in smocked dresses. She is turning 5 at the end of March. I fear her getting any bigger. The clothes are horrible. I am totally interested in hearing where people suggest going.

I love smocking, but Easter last year was the last smocking I bought for my 7 year old. *sob*

Kid's clothes are kind of my "thing" so we have quite a variety. All of these brands have a lot of younger looking stuff, but if you pick and choose you can find plenty of "big girl" stuff as well. Some of these brands are a bit pricier, but I shop good sales and also resell most of my kid's items.

For school clothes/casual stuff:

Land's End
Naartjie-though we're wearing less of this now that she's older
Mini Boden
Gymboree -Again less of this as she gets older, but we still have quite a bit
Children's Place
Crazy 8 (crazy 8 is to Gymboree as Old Navy is to Gap :thumbsup2)
Gap Kids
Osk Kosh (I don't buy much from here, but my MIL does :))
Dressy/church stuff

Naartjie again
Janie and Jack
Chez Ami (their stuff is quite expensive though, so I only buy on clearance)
My Mom just bought both girls some dresses from Matilda Jane. Their stuff is lovely and funky, but generally too expensive for me. My mom got a wild hair and decided to splurge. :)

Strasburg has nice things and they go to size 14. They also have outlet stores. I think Toy Soldier is another with 7+ sizes.

I think you mean Wooden Soldier. :) AFAIK Strasburg has mostly gone out of business. Their site has been "under construction" for a good six months and all the stores within a few hours of us have closed. I was broken hearted, as I really wanted to buy DD1s First Communion dress for this year.

I thought of a few other brands though.

Hartstrings -they also have an older girl's line called K.C. Parker with some lovely things

I feel the same way. Ugh. Why oh why do retailers think I want to dress my 8-year-old daughter like a risque college student?!?!? My daughter is 8, but has always been very tall for her age (and thin). She wears a 10/12 now. I shop a lot at Gymboree, but she is phasing out of it now. Your daughter is at a great age for Gymboree though. Also Janie & Jack.

Some favorite online shopping sites are Mini Boden, CWDKids, Next direct has some cute stuff, Garnet Hill, and Chasing Fireflies.

I am big on several lines that are sold thru Home Shows, but also online! My #1 is definitely Just Ducky Originals, which carries numerous style outfits that you customize 100% to get the look with numerous fabric choices. You pick your child's style and she won't look like the next girl (as is a big problem for my hometown since we run in such small circles in a small town). I also like Ragsland, Hanna Kate & Kelly's Kids! These are very conservative lines & very classic look which is important to me! I also love the fact that I can dress my 5.5 year old DD to my 9.5 year old DS!!

I'm going to agree with the others that Gymboree is great. My DD is 5 and tall for her age - she's getting ready to go into size 7s and so much of it is trashy. I tend to buy a season ahead with Gymbo stuff. I can buy things cheaper than I can get them at Target if I wait for sales and use the 20% off coupons they put in the parenting magazines. (I.e. I paid around $15 for each of her swimsuits from Gymbo which is a couple dollars more than what I would pay at Target.) I also love the fact that their clothes are a good quality and I generally have no problems getting stains out of them.

I also like Crazy 8. The only downside is they do combo sizes. Their medium is a 7/8 which is just too big for DD right now.

My 6 year old dd started wearing a size 7 at age 5 1/2. I completely agree with you about the stuff you find in a lot of the stores. She wears a lot of Hanna anderssen. They aren't cheap, but they have lots of sales and pretty much every time you order you get a 20% off coupon with your order. The clothes are good quality, comfortable cute and hold up well in the wash. We recently got a couple of things from garnet hill and really liked them. I like gymboree too and dd used to wear a lot of it when she was younger, but dd doesn't like their styles that much anymore

We shop at Target - just have to keep looking and checking back, they rotate stock quickly.

Justice - yes, it is possible to dress fairly conserative and buy clothes there, just need to try things on and look frequently.

Gap.

Places like Gymboree carry up to a 12 so, if you want clothes with a style geared to younger kids, that might be a good option. I think Crazy 8 has bigger sizes too. My daughter was 6 when she decided she would no longer wear that kind of stuff though. She wanted jeans and t-shirts. She wore Gap and The Children's Place for a bit after that and now wants Aeropostale, but she is 12.

Just wanted to add that I'm another one. My daughter is 5 1/2 and has been in size 7 since last summer. She's really tall and I have a hard time finding stuff that doesn't look risque. I do most of my shopping at Gymboree, The Children's Place, Old Navy, Gap... but I'm going to check out some of the others listed because the kids in her school dress up a lot and I have been sending her in wearing jeans and t-shirts most of the time! Sad, since right now she LOVES frills, the more the better!

Considering that children are getting bigger and bigger, you would think that this issue would be addressed so that 5-year old can still BE 5-year olds. I had the hardest time finding a cute, frilly bathing suit for her for our upcoming Disney Trip! She wanted the frills, but it's very difficult to find in sizes 7+!

Hanna Andersson is great. They dress kids like kids and I love that. They are a little expensive though. I have been fortunate enough to live near a Hanna Andersson outlet (once in Portland OR and now we are by one in Kittery ME) Check and see if there is one by you. They have killer prices on monster sales. I have 4 kids and my clothes budget is small. I have gotten dressed there for $5, shoes on sale for $5, tops for $2. And it is all organic cotton and nice enough that my older two have been able to hand it down to the younger two. Even the tights! I wouldn't pay full price for anything, because I think it is too expensive, but the sales are really great.
I used to love Gymboree because you could get good sales but the quality in the last 2 years has really gone down and I find I don't get my moneys worth.
I really use Marshalls and TJ maxi a lot too. Yes, you never know what you are going to get there, but their markdowns are great. I have never paid more that $10 there for anything.
I also like Oshkosh online...also does great sales. They have a outlet as well and I have had great luck there.
REI is great if you are a member too. You get a rebate at the end of the year. I wait for sales (but you don't get a rebate on sale items). However, they have great outdoor gear for a good price. Nice jackets, ski pants etc. Sales are great there as well.
And last but not least, have you tried a used clothing store? I know, that isn't as attractive as new, but we have had good luck at Goodwill or our local consignment store. I have gotten a lot that look almost like new and every so often I have even gotten $5 off coupons from Goodwill.
Good luck!!!

Have you looked at Lands End? My dd loves frills and sparkes and she found a swim suit there she likes - it is pink and has ruffles on the top and a little skirt that matchs. As for clothes, she loves Justice, we just have to be careful and try on clothes to make sure they are appropriate - most skirts require leggings (but they make shorter ones for summer).

Thanks for the suggestions. We do have a Gymboree and Children's Place Outlet in North Charleston. I just never seem to get up there, but I will make a special trip for this. It may be my new place to shop. We have several Gymboree bathing suits and I bought all of her school uniforms from Children's Place.

We used to buy alot of Chez Ami and Ragsland when she was smaller, but I haven't ordered anything from them in a while. I'll also check out all the on-line suggestions as well.

My DD who is almost 4 is the same way and I'm already buying size 5 or 6 for her. Luckily I have some of her sister's clothes to use so I don't have to buy everything. And yes I am also one of the parents that are amazed that retailers want our little girls to look like naughty schoolgirls!:scared1: I am very picky about the girls clothes and make sure that they look stylish, but still like little kids.

I can't say that I'm cheap, but I don't spend on the kids what I would spend on adult clothes. They ruin their clothes with rips and stains and grow through them too quickly to spend tons of money on them. I absolutely adore the clothes at Mini Boden and Hanna Andersson but I just can't justify spending that cash on kids clothes, unless I had an unlimited budget.:cloud9: I let their Grandmom buy them clothes from there.;) I don't buy them poor quality though, just to save some money.

I usually shop at Target, Kohl's, Gymboree, Children's Place, Justice, and Lands End, and usually only buy at the last 4 places when there's a sale going on or from the clearance rack.
