So we just got news that DH is being transferred to Orlando for work for the next few years, it doesn't seem to be permanent unless we want it to be, and while I've always wanted to live in Florida, I've never wanted to live in Orlando, and we've also talked about settling in the Carolinas or Georgia, so at this stage in the game, it doesn't appear to be a permanent thing.

What would you do with your DVC if this happened? Rent it out, or bank the points? I've thought about renting the points but I am a little leery of doing that. I was thinking we could try HHI to use up some points, but if we wanted a get away for the two of us, we'd use my Uncle's timeshare in Key West or go to the west coast of FL since we really like it there....

Any suggestions?

I'd keep my DVC so I had somewhere to house the relatives when they come to visit. :)

Exactly my thought! :thumbsup2 But....I would stay at the DVC resorts and let the relatives have my house!!

DH and I are planning to move to FL sometime in the future. We do not plan on getting rid of DVC. We will keep it and use it for 2-4 day trips, stays at Vero Beach, and HH.

I could never give up my DVC!!

I would go visit Disneyland or go take some weekends at the WDW resorts anyway! What a fun way to take some fun weekends and try out some of the resorts!

duh! why didn't I think of this earlier?! And we are going to be moving in the area of UCF which is about 30 minutes away from wdw from what I understand, so if we moved a little farther away from UCF (by 15-20 minutes) that could put me almost an hour away, so short trips could be a definite thing. I wouldn't want to commute an hour each direction if I could use my dvc for a studio or something. I would definitely get to use my DVC to its true value!

I'd keep it and use it for ourselves! You don't have to travel far to have a getaway. You don't even need to go to the parks when you're there. Lounge by the pool, go to the restaurants, etc...

We will be moving south someday. Undecided between FL, GA or the Carolinas but hopefully no further than a half day's drive to WDW. Not only will we finally be able to enjoy a better climate year round, we'll also be able to use our DVC even more! Can't WAIT for that day.

Enjoy Orlando! My SIL moved there a few years ago and loves it. She kept her DVC too by the way. :)

Thats exactly what I do. I also use my points at Vero fairly often for a cheap getaway or sometimes just take a relaxing "weekend" (I don't work a typical M-F job) at the World. Even though I'm only about 10 minutes away from the Epcot parking lot, I still love staying on property sometimes.

I live 2 1/2 hours away and own DVC. I use it in Vero, 1 1/2 hours away, and Orlando. We love Disney and the Orlando resort area so it's just nice to get away from home. If you didn't want to do that you could bank and borrow points to cruise deluxe style every other year and of course there is still Hilton Head. You could also bank points and do some of the cool trips they advertise, like the hiking, bicycling or white river rafting, there's a world of possibilities!

We are up in Longwood (Seminole County) and primarly stay for long weekends. We stay for our birthdays, Candlelight Processional, and New Year's Eve. We will still go just for the day.

This is exactly what I would do. I would love it that I would be that close and be able to be staying on property more often. To us, it's so magical just being on property without even going to the parks.

A friend of my (Hi Kamy) works for WDW and lives about 45 minutes away. If she has an early morning or a late night meeting, she uses the points to stay on property.

One of the best hidden trip ideas is to vacation in your home town. When you settle in you may find you actually visit Disney less than you'd expect. The drudgery of shuffling around a work day, taking care of the household, grocery shopping, etc. saps all the energy you'd have for a day's outing at a park.

But if you can book a weekend or just a night's stay (especially if it's last minute) then you suddenly become like an out-of-town tourist again.

When 4th of July was on a weekday and my dad had to work in town July 3 and 5th, we booked an overnight stay in the city. It's a 30 minute drive for him and 10 minutes from work, but he never gets a chance to just roam around and visit. (There's sports games but that's it.) This way he was able to "get-away" and tour the aquarium, science center, Inner Harbor area, watch fireworks, have a nice dinner and see Fort McHenry for the first time since gradeschool. All he needed was an overnight bag and he never missed an hour from work.

If Disney was in our backyard, I'd be staying a weekend a month just to use the pools or have a night out watching fireworks. There are so many things to do at Disney you never have the same vacation twice.

I'm 35 minutes from the DLR and added points at the VGC so my vacations will be cheaper in the future. No more airfaire, no need for passes(already a AP holder) and I'll bring food from the house.

Now your WDW vacations can be dramatically cheaper for all the same reasons. :)

I'd do this ^

You said its not permanent. Use them for Disneyland, Adventures by Disney, or DCL. Or, heck, it'd still be fun to go stay on property for a weekend or more. If you move away, you'll still own them.

I live in Tampa which is about an hour drive. I bought so I can hang out at the pools 2 or 3 days on the weekends several times a year. Thats is the the advantage we have living in Florida.

My friend lives right in Orlando, and uses her points for pool days with the kids. Sometimes she teams up with other moms, and they get a villa for overnight, so the kids swim two days, and they stay overnight on points. They go over to the ocean(Vero), up to the Carolinas(HHI), to California. They can't wait for Hawaii to open up, and have even planned a trip to France to Disneyland Paris! I could never give up DVC, it's what keeps me sane.:goodvibes

We live in Orlando and bought last year while on a cruise. We have used our points to go to Disneyland (Grand Californian) and will go again this year. We also spent five days over Spring Break at Vero Beach and would go there again in a heartbeat. We have talked about spending a weekend at any of the resorts - a getaway without going away. Trust me, it's just as wonderful if you live nearby; maybe better because you are spared the travel expenses and can run home if you forgot something! :goodvibes
