Hi all,

My DD7 wants to try Soarin' but is afraid of heights. I want to make sure I get this right...I need to ask to be placed in Row 3, right? That's the one that doesn't go far off the ground? I know that one is the worst for having people's feet in the way, but I'd rather she not be scared the first time. Then, if she likes it, maybe we can go again on Row 1!

Judy

Rather than try to remeber which row to ask for, I'd just tell the CMs that yo want to be in the row that will be nearest to the ground during the show.

DUH! That's a good idea! I need to back off of my "obsessive overplanning" a little bit!

Honestly, Soarin' is a pretty intensive ride which feels like you are flying very, very high in the air, no matter how close to the ground you really are. It really isn't a ride for those who are afraid of heights. If she chooses to ride, make sure you use the loop between her legs for the seatbelt for shorter kids even if she is tall enough. It will ensure she can't wiggle out of the seatbelt is she panics.

Yup, row three!

How exciting that you leave today!!! Have a WONDERFUL trip!!

And look at you, going to MVMCP! Have you ever been before? We went twice last year and had a great time. We were a little disappointed that it was so crowded though, after hearing reports of just walking onto all the rides! But we chose to go the last 2 party nights, so I guess that's what happens! But that was OK, it still made for a special Christmas!

Maybe I should ride first, so I can judge whether she will be scared.

I think that's a great idea! you know your child best.

I am very afraid of heights but do just fine on Soarin' if I lean back and just enjoy the show.

To be honest, the bottom row (closest to the floor) is still high up and being able to see the floor (like you can from that row) made me much more uptight than sitting on the upper row. I abolutely HATED the bottom row because I could lean forward and judge just how high off the floor I was and I paid more attention to that then the show.

How does this ride work? do you go in and sit in a seat like normal, and then the seat rotates so that you are leaning on your stomach? I really have no concept of how this thing goes :confused3

I rode Soaring a couple of days ago for the first time and I am afraid of heights. This 37 year old baby kept her eyes closed for most of the show and hogged the handle bars on the sides. I was scared to death. I was in the 2nd row. I wish I'd known you could see the floor in the 3rd row, I would have chosen that instead. I don't intend to ride again.

Judy, there are three rows of seats. Each row is raised against a huge curved screen in a seated position. The rows in front are raised higher so that they don't block your view, although if you look up, you will see their feet.

The seats you sit in are upright like regular chairs. There's a seatbelt type restraint. Honestly, it's a movie theater where the seats are raised up. I didn't find it "intense" at all.

I used "intense" in reference to someone who is afraid of heights.

Let me try to describe the ride:

You are seated upright in a row of seats like this:

Soaring%20Ride.jpg

You are strapped in with a seat belt and smaller "flyers" put their belt though the crotch loop (which you can see on the first seat).

The whole row of seats is lifted into the air and you are suspended over the ground. There are 3 rows of seats, so the ones in front are lifted the highest and the one in back the lowest. They end up "stacked" one above the other, but they don't touch.

There is a very large, curved screen like an IMax screen and they show a movie about California. You are almost surrounded by the screen so your entire field of vision is the movie. Like many IMax movies the camera swoops in and out, left and right. The whole row of seats also moves to reinforce the illusion that you are flying with the camera.

I hope that helps :).
