The Broadway show thread where we discuss all things Broadway

If you are in NYC this Sunday, Dec 14, Fifth Avenue is having their 4th annual Holiday Open Streets. Fifth Avenue, 12pm to 6pm, from 48th to 57th streets will be car-free and open to pedestrians. Additionally, cross streets from 49th street to 56th street will be open to pedestrians only between fifth and sixth avenues.

The Rockefeller Christmas tree between at 49th & 50th St west of Sixth Ave.

This is a perfect time to see the stores along Fifth Ave all decked out in holiday splendor, before or after seeing a Broadway matinee.

For reasons we won't discuss here, I'm not a fan of the "Wicked" movies that have been released. Does anyone know if there's a video recording of the Broadway version with Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth? I would love to watch that version.

I have never heard of any video recording. I would be happy with a recording of the stage version with anyone in it.

Do be warned if you're in town on Saturday Dec 13, it is SantaCon. Lots of drunk Santas wandering/stumbling around and on the trains.

Not a legal one. There may be a slime tutorial, I'm not sure.

Broadway shows are filmed and archived for the NY Public Library for the Performing Arts branch at Lincoln Center. One can go in and watch any of the shows they have archived since 1970. (One cannot take out the recordings to watch at home. They have to be watched at the Library.) It is usually filmed with the original Broadway cast. I'm not sure if only those who have a library card are let in to watch though.

More details here:

I hope, after hearing how some paper works at the Louvre were recently flooded with water a few days ago, that this archive is well protected and backed up.

Local NYC's ABC news entertainment reporter Joelle Garguilo, who since last year, has been reporting entertainment news, got to make some personal news herself as she got to perform in Chicago on Broadway a couple days ago.

Here is a clip of her being coached and rehearsing behind the scenes, fitted for costume, etc. It's interesting to see her behind the scenes to her one performance.

(Yes, that's Sam Champion, the weather guy from GMA on the far right at the end of the segment. He's been our "local" weatherman forever.)

Just to be clear, you're supposed to be a theater professional, theater student, or other theater professional. It's not really available to the general public.

Hello, everyone! Wow! Can't believe that this thread I started back in 2009 is still going. Love this.

Anyone on here ever listen to Come From Away? I started listening to this show because my daughter loves it so much, and I'm blown away by the music. I love it! I pretty much plays on repeat in my office all day. Love this show. That's all, just had to mention that. Thanks

Theatergoers, if you're able to see Operation Mincemeat, DO IT! I absolutely loved it and need to see it again (and again and again...). It's super fast paced, very witty, intelligent - just a total joy of a show.

Also, I never thought I'd recommend this. But the Stranger Things play is a jawdropping spectacle. Absolutely worth seeing on Broadway if possible. I doubt it will tour, and even if it does they won't be able to do the spectacle they do in New York. A friend was talking with the associate director before and she said something about what you're able to do when you have Netflix money, and even then we got far more than we expected. It's really that incredible.

I was just about to say the same thing. I took my daughter and granddaughter (10) to see Stranger Things on December 18th....we were center in Row N. We all loved the show....that opening scene with the battleship was just breathtaking. The dominant red outline around the stage and sounds were spot on. We thought all the actors did a great job. Special effects were awesome!!! Netflix does do things right....our home was once used for a Netflix show and they went all out to make sure we (and all our possessions) were happy!! They took great care of us.

Come From Away is one of my favorite shows. Just joyful.

We saw it at Ford's Theatre pre-Broadway and then in London again 'cause we loved it so much! They filmed it on Broadway and it's available to stream on AppleTV - highly recommend :)

I saw the show during its original Broadway run (twice), and subsequently learned that my cousin’s wife is a literal Come From Away. She’s British and was flying home from visiting family. She wasn’t housed in Gander but another little Canadian town nearby. Just fascinating. She speaks very warmly of that time.

We LOVE Come From Away, it's my husbands favorite show, he gets super emotional every time, and he is not a cryer. We have seen it three times so far. The Guthrie in Mpls is doing a long local run next summer, so we plan to see it at least two more times.

I was typing my last post rather quickly and didn't mention, but I'll be auditioning for Come From Away at the local community college on Saturday. So looking forward to this show.

Break a leg! You’ll do great I’m sure.

Thanks. After having done back to back shows, Evita and Newsies, The Broadway Musical, I wasn't expecting to audition for the show, but my DD is obsessed with it and turned me on to it. There's also several cast members from Newsies that were planning on auditioning....so I had to. :teeth:
