Warriors WISHing for Spring!

Jeremy I think you're right- pacing is always the key! Congratulations on such an enjoyable run :goodvibes

Amy Makes sense to get your knee noted. Well done on your 5ks and new shoes wahooooo. Hope combined with the inserts that they help.

John ha I'm sorry that I made your head sore! Stats has a habit of doing that! I hope the slippage stops and you manage to avoid a fusion, can't believe you'd do such a long walk in that condition!

Jim thanks for feedback on EE questions- I've been wondering that for a while. Really pleased you're managing to get the tri-training in where possible. Fingers crossed your shoulder improves soon. Thanks for looking at the website too!

me i've spent about 17 hours doing stats this weekend. All I need is a stats person to answer 1 question then I'd be ok! Oh well, I've done all I can and submitted it to my lecturer. Went to an abs class on wednesday.... oh my word!!!!!! 30 mins of crunches!!!! I DON'T DO CRUNCHES OR SIT UPS! great work out though. Physio on thursday- fingers crossed I'll be allowed to run then :yay:

Take care everyone

Happy Sunny HOT Florida Sunday Warriors!!!

I did a 38+ mile bike ride this morning with a nice negative split. Speed was 16.8 after the first 24, then I tried to hammer the trip back hard and finished with an overall 17.7 average. Not where I want to be, but not bad considering my lack of bike miles over the last few weeks.

I was going to run this afternoon, but had I a busy night at work and decided not to kill myself too badly in the heat (94º in the sun). Went to a really nasty compound tib/fib fracture last night. Yuuuuuck! We gave this poor woman a LOT of morphine before even touching the leg to splint it. And the usual "wake me up in the middle of the night for no real reason" calls to go with it.

I had a work physical exam last week. A really GREAT doctor that takes the time to actually talk WITH you, not AT you. We were talking about my recent litany of aches and pains & when we discussed my shoulder issues. He really had no idea until I mentioned I was on a course of Cipro for my vestibular infection problems. He immediately zero'ed in on that as the cause of my multiple muscle/tendon issues. Says it can have that side effect. So no more Cipro for me. And I thought those side effect warnings on drugs were for the OTHER guy. Surprise, surprise...........

The race season is pretty much done except for some local Tri's & 5k's. Hopefully I will be motivated enough to do a sprint Tri this summer. Problem is I suck so bad at swimming I finish way down near the bottom of my age group on Tri's. My poor, frail male ego has a real problem with that. I really need to concentrate on the water, but have no one to blame except myself. Hopefully it will HELP my shoulder and not hinder it.

Hopefully it will be moderate enough to put in a few miles tomorrow morning.

Best to all the Warriors!! You Guys all ROCK!!

Almost broke 30:00 on my last 5K, and I think that's because I got there after the race started. Oops! :lmao:

Today, we ran 5 miles at a just-over 9min/mi pace. That's me running with the Chief the whole time. I know I can run a bit faster, but for the training, I don't mind running with her. Don't know what I'm going to do Wed AM - child-care issues may prevent doing PT with everyone.

Keep up the great work, fellow warriors! :)

Hi all

Kate - Hope the stats are done.

JimB - Hope getting off the Cipro helps. My aunt and mom were on Lisinopril for years for High Blood Pressure. This winter, they had both developed coughs they thought were from sickness and ended up being a side effect of the Lisinopril.

Amy - It's good to take it easy every so often.

This weeks been good for me. On Monday I did a fairly easy 5 miles. It was a warm and humid day, but did a moderate 3 before cooling down.

Wednesday went to the track and did 2x800m and 1x1600m. It wasn't hot but the sun was blaring so I went on to a trail nearby for an easy 2 miles.

Today. Near perfect weather. 60 degrees and overcast. 7 mile long run.

Jim So pleased to hear that your doctor realised the meds weren't helping. How long until you see some improvements in your shoulder? I hope super soon!

Amy hurrah for your sub-30! Nothing like hurried start line antics to get your adrenaline going.

Jeremy another solid week of workouts for you! Track work sounds awesome too. Yes thanks stats is well and truly done. I did it right so now it's just time to start writing it up.

me physio was ok this week- no more taping, just starting to do strength work now with therabands. Can't wait to get my running shoes back on.... but for now swimming most mornings for 30 mins.

Hi Warriors!

We're heading off to the Olympic Peninsula for the North Olympic Half Marathon on Sunday. We lost our babysitter for the event, but I won the coin toss. :lmao: Hopefully we'll find a backup Callum-minder (we're running with the charity we've run with for 3 years, now, and we have a possible option, but we'll have to see how things work out) so DH can run as well, but if not, I'll definitely be out there. I'm undertrained, but my goal is to run in under 2:45. I used to run 2:15 halfs, but my fastest half since I became pregnant with Callum is 2:48 (WDW 2010 at 11 weeks pregnant) and I can't seem to break that. This race is supposed to be flat and fast, but it's also supposed to be hot on Sunday, so we'll see. :wizard:

Have a great weekend, Warriors!

Sarah~ I hope your race went well!

Sorry for being gone for so long- no running depression, as well as a week trip to Fl to see my folks and this week we moved DD#1 and DSinL#1 from North Carolina to Wisconsin.

My knee issue is lasting way longer than I wanted it to (do we ever want them to last?)
Turns out I have a tear in the capsulary which is leaking fluid causing the knee to swell.

I can now run (slowly) one mile and then have to hit the elliptical for a few more. If I run for no more than a mile the knee only swells a bit and although it doesn't bend as well the day after I run it does go away.

I'm going to try to improve my fitness by taking a cross fit class starting tomorrow- the teacher is good and will work with my recovery so I'm excited about it.

I hope everyone else is doing well and is enjoying the warm (very warm) summer weather

Hi all.

Sarah - Hope your half marathon went well. BTW, I was able to use my 2:51 from Xenia to get corral placement at Disneyland I updated after the race to a 2:41 expected finish. I don't know what you put for your expected finish but your WDW half sould be good enough for "proof of time"

Pam - Hope your knee continues to imporove.

Kate - Hope you continue to mend as well.

Trainings been going fairly well here. Last week I did 5, 5, and 8. For Monday's 5 I did Run :30/walk :45 for a while then bumped up to run 1:00/walk 1:00, Finished with Run 1:30/walk 1:00.

Wednesday after warmup I ran 2 miles without walk breaks. Had a tough slow time on the trip back.

Friday, nice easy long run did run :30/walk :40 for a little over 7 miles then switched to run :45/walk :30 for the last 3/4 mile. So I could get use to doing something close to race ratio at the end of a long run.

Today. Did 5 miles with what Galloway calls a "Magic Mile". After warmup, my 1 mile time trial was 9:58. My previous best was 10:23. With summer comming, not sure if I can improve too much on that until fall but I'll try. I've been doing them every 3-4 weeks. I have my goal 5K on Friday evening.

Sending healing thoughts to those in need!
Great job Jeremy!
Sarah - I hope your race went well and you found childcare!

I've been in a bit of a slump. I was sick for 2 weeks. First a bad cold and then a wicked sinus infection. I made it to Monday night running clinic both weeks but did nothing else. Last week I made clinic and did a run on Wednesday but missed my weekend run. I made it to clinic last night and I want to do better this week!!! I'm getting killed at work right now and it's hard to find the energy to run when I'm on my feet 10 hours a day at work. I'm also exhausted and stressed out (running is good for stress but stress is bad for motivation!) so that hasn't helped. My next race isn't until October so I have enough time but I want to keep up my training.

Amanda

Amanda ergh sorry you've been feeling rubbish- you did well to get any runs in with work being tough too, be proud of that, but it is ok to take time out if you're unwell!!!!

Jeremy wow- that's a heck of an improvement in your magic mile! Is your 5k on friday an event? If so good luck!

Pam you'll be amazed by how much you can get from cross training once you convince yourself it'll make you a better and stronger overall runner. I'm sorry your knee turned out to be torn

Sarah oh young sarah ha ha ha, have you got over the age error yet? 23 is an excellent age, perhaps my favourite age of my (almost) 26 years! Awaiting more details on your run, but you did good!

Me had my first go on the treadmill.... warmed up on bike and all seemed ok, walked for a couple of mins and then took my first running steps to be greeted by a number of pops and clicks in my foot. It felt like it had settled so i managed 15 mins...... too long.... very sore.... stupid kate. :upsidedow Back to icing and abs class today! I will have a toned stomach for my honeymoon (maybe!)

Kate: I don't really mind "being 23" again (as I said on FB, 23 was definitely a good year.... just a little too many history-themed martini parties :rotfl:), but the problem is that it totally messed with my rankings. Apparently those 20-24 year olds are fast! :lmao: Not that it really matters whether I come in the bottom 20% or the bottom 40%... :rolleyes1 Hope the foot is feeling better, soon! And wow, your wedding is coming up quick, isn't it? :cheer2:

Amanda: I got hit with that same cold/sinus infection combo a couple weeks ago - brutal, isn't it? Ugh. Take your time finding your motivation; you have plenty of time to train for your October race, and it's no fun forcing yourself to run when you don't feel up to it. :goodvibes

Hope all our eastern/midwestern/southern runners are taking it easy in the heat! :cool2:

Alright, here's what I did on Sunday, crossposted on the Race Reports thread:

I ran the North Olympic Discovery Half Marathon in Washington State, and it's totally my new favorite half marathon. The first four miles are through a rural area, with fields of wildflowers and towering snow-capped mountains in the near distance. The next 4 miles wander through the forest and across bridges over streams and rivers. And the last 5 miles are along the waterfront, with the sea breeze blowing in from the Pacific Ocean. All 13.1 miles are along a winding trail, and the half marathon is capped at 1200 runners.

I have to admit that I was skeptical. We run with a charity (the Arthritis Foundation) every year, and the last two years they've chosen the Rock n Roll Seattle marathon/half. I'd only ever run large races (20 000+ runners) and I know that I prefer to run in the city than on the trail... when the AF chose the NODM for their 2011 event, I was afraid that I would be bored out of my skull during this half marathon and that there wouldn't be enough along the route to keep me interested. Definitely not the case. There were tons of volunteers out on the route, tons of spectators in the areas where spectators were possible (when the trail was adjacent to a road or when we passed by homes that backed on to the trail), and the route itself just felt... perfect. :cloud9:

The only challenge for the event was the weather. We've only had one day over 70 degrees since last August in the Pacific NW... and today it was 78 and not a cloud in the sky. It made the race feel VERY hot (even though you runners in warmer climates would laugh at us!) because we were just not used to the warmer weather. There was plenty of water (and snacks!) on the course, and spectators set up their own water stations and sprinklers to run through. Still, there was no shade at all for the first 5 miles, and I was really feeling the heat by that point. The race is point-to-point, and shuttles were excellent, and the staging and finishing areas were all really good. The race also boasts that every finisher gets a "finish line buddy" who gets you your medal and your drink, and makes sure you get aid if you need it. :goodvibes Great snacks (including popsicles!) at the end of the race!

My goal was a 2:45 race... my last few halfs have not gone well (RnR Seattle last year at 3:48 at 8 months pregnant, and then WDW half in January at 2:58, with major lower back pain from mile 7 on) and I mostly just wanted to run a clean race with no pain or problems. The heat slowed me down, but I still felt good all the way through... even though I had to walk through the hot sunny patches for the last couple miles. :lmao: I finished in 2:45:58, and I'm very happy with how I felt at the end.

Here are a few pictures from the race.

Coming up to the finish line along the waterfront:

The finisher medal. I LOVE the medal design... the image is a good representation of the path the trail takes you.

Stay cool, Warriors! We're not having that problem here in the Pacific Northwest.... we're back to 65 and rainy again. :rotfl2:

Sarah - Nice job on your race. It sounds like a very nice setting and (compared to us in Florida.......) lovely WEATHER.

Jeremy - Great improvement in your MM time. You are progressing very well. Keep up the good work.

Amanda - Sorry you have been sick. Hope you are recovering well. Being a whiney male, I absolutely hate being ill in any way.

AFM - It has been a**-kicking brutally HOT in Florida lately. No rain at all in the last month. Hot +dry +stupid people =brush fires. My second least favorite thing.

Due to the heat & my convoluted schedule, I have not been able to do more than about 3 1/2-4 miles at a time running in weeks. It's really a pain in the ***. I do not have the time or inclination to get up and run real early (additionally, it is not safe to run on the roads where I live), and I tend to run out of daylight if I wait until it's "cooler" in the evening (80º F at 11pm last night).

On a happier note, I DID get out and do a 40 mile bike ride yesterday. I am trying to make a real effort to increase my bike miles. I'm pointing to the Florida 1/2 IM next May & it's never too early to start I guess. Now, if I can just get my butt in the water................................

Hi all.

Amanda- Hope your feeling better by now.

Kate - Congratulation on your TM run.

Sarah - Nice job on your Half Marathon. That's pretty close to your goal time.

JimB - I know the heat can be brutal.

AFM - My 5K on Friday evening went as well as could be expected considering it was 84 (89 with the heat index) at the start. I didn't get the time I wanted but I did set a new PR of 38:39. Had the weather cooperated I was hoping for a 36:xx. I posted a more complete report Here.

This week on Friday I'm walking with relay for life. I'm thinking about doing my long run tomorrow so I don't need to worry about time or distances at the relay on Friday. Also, the weather tomorrow morning is supposed to be 55 in the morning. So I'm going to take advantage of it with my long run. I'm off from work next week for break between quarters.

Hello everyone! Glad to hear that some of you racers have run well and those that were ill are back on the mend! :)

We (my Chief and I) are in the beginning stages of our training plan. We ran 3-3-4 last W, Th, & Sat, and another 3 today, with 3-3-4 the rest of this week. Next week we bump up the numbers. The heat down here in FL has been BRUTAL, as Jim mentioned so it's made some of these 'easy' 3-milers pretty tough. I told Cheif we're going to have to make our starting times earlier than 0630 because the heat is only going to get worse!

I have an uncle who just went into hospice on Friday and I'm just waiting on the call from my dad to tell me he's passed. When the call comes, it's off to Maine I go. Not sure how much running I'll be able to get in while I'm up there, but I'll hopefully enjoy some cooler temps.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Hi Warriors,

Good news to report - after a full week of running 2 miles (sometimes on an indoor track , sometimes on the road) the knee is holding it's own and I hope to kick it up another half- full mile. I don't seem to have any more swelling today than usual even though I forgot to take my knee brace (mainly for compression) to wear while running. I love my cross fit class (even though it really kicks my butt and I'm probably the oldest in the class by 10-15 yrs).

I hope everyones last week has been as good!

Pam that's wonderful news! You're knee is behaving and letting you get right back at it. Great that you've found a class that you enjoy too.

Amy sorry about your uncle- I know it's a horrible feeling right now and hope you have tons of support.

Jim  for the 40miler! Ick your heat sounds bad- can't imagine having to go out so late at night. I'm tucked up in bed then!

jeremy sounds to me like you had a cracking 5k heat or no heat! Congratulations because your hard work is paying off.

Sarah thanks so much for sharing your race report, what a wonderful setting and medal. The pic with callum is gorgeous!!! I take it that means you didn't manage to get a sitter so DH could run? (can I just add that you are in incredible shape!!!).

me physio today- not allowed to run still.... review in 4WEEKS! I wish I could find someone else to see if their recovery is this slow. Abs class again yesterday and I've decided I need to practise during the week because it's still so tough. I'll do it though :yay:

Hi Warriors,

Hope all the Dad's out there have a good Father's Day.:cool1:

We are now in the stages for getting ready for DL. I purchased a smart phone and down loaded the run keeper. We walked today and it let me know the pace was a 15:57 for 5 miles. The temp was 80 and the humidity was 70. I am finally getting under the 16 mark. We have been doing some speed walk during the week and that is when I am getting in the the 14's.

John(DH) is still in his neck brace. He goes back again to the DR. next week and again we will see what he says.

Hope everyone else is doing well and being safe
Kathy

Hi all

Amy - Sorry to hear about your Uncle. Good job on getting your plan started.

Pam - Sounds like the return to running is going well.

Kate - Keep working at it. It sounds like your getting better. It's just going slow.

Kathy - The walking is really coming along. It might be worth trying to intermingle those speed walks with your regular walking. Almost Galloway style. i.e. 10 sec. speed walking/50 sec. normal walking. Good to hear John is continuing to mend.

Me - I ended up doing 9-5-3 for my normal training. The 3 was 2 miles of straight running with 1/2 mile warmup and cooldown. That same day I also did 5 miles walking for relay for life. So a total of 22 miles.

Hey Warriors!!

Happy Fathers Day to all Us dads out there!1

Not much goiing on down here. It's hot as Hades here. Have had a few days of intermittent showers. Get a bit of rain, a lot of lightning & as a result, MORE brush fires. Ugh. The smell and appearance of smoke is all too pervasive these last few days.

Getting in some really unproductive running lately. 3-6 miles in the blazing heat. I guess it's better than sitting on the sofa, but it can really be running in survival mode rather than fitness.

I WAS going to go on a nice, early bike ride this morning, but while putting my last good tube on my bikes rear wheel last night, I failed to insure the tire was properly seated on the rim & my inflation efforts culminated in a rather loud boom that scared the bejeebers out of the dogs, my DW, DS and myself. & Wally World does not carry 700 x 23mm tubes. Surprise.

Going to load up on tubes tomorrow while at work, and hit the pavement again on Tuesday. Time to get back in the pool, I guess.

Keep it up guys! You all rock!!

Happy Father's Day to the Warrior Dads!!!
I'm starting to get back on track. I missed running clinic on Monday because I was in the OR until late but I ran Tues and did 5 miles yesterday. Getting there...
I've also informed my DH that he is starting his half marathon training in 2 weeks. He will finish this time and I'm going to try to get him through the training. I'm making him start really slow - run 20 sec walk 40 sec because he has a tendency to do too much and get injured. I think it will also force me to stick with my training so I set a good example.

Amanda
