Warriors WISHing for Spring!

Hi there Warriors!

Amanda: How did your running clinic go?

John: How are you feeling?

Kate: ICK! I dislocated my cuboid a couple years ago. It HURT! I also didn't get diagnosed until after it had already popped back in, so I walked around Vegas for 3 days (WDW quantities of walking) with it dislocated. And then ran the WDW half a week later. I paid for that one for awhile. Hope things are feeling better, soon!

I have a half in just over a month, but i'm in tri mode. Whoops. My longest run since the WDW half was 7 miles... need to do 8 miles this weekend, and I need to do better with my week day runs. But I have been biking and swimming! :rotfl: I'm going to join our local YMCA this week so I can work out while Callum plays in their child care center... then I won't have any excuses! :thumbsup2

Good luck to all injured Warriors for a speedy recovery.

Sarah, the half and tri will each be a piece of cake.

AFM...Clavicle is slowly healing and feeling fine. I see ortho Dr. tomorrow.

When neurosurgeon walked into room last Thursday and looked at X-ray for C6 injury he was not happy. CT Scan this week with office visit ASAP and possible fusion. :sad2:

Hope all injured warriors are on the mend and back on the running trails soon!

Since I last posted, I convinced my Chief to sign up for the W&DHM, and we're going to begin a half marathon training plan when she returns from leave in 2 weeks. I'm looking forward to that - mostly 'cause I'd rather not do organized PT. :)

We ran 4 miles on Monday and I missed PT today. Oops!

Hope all is well with everyone!

Happy Wednesday Warriors!!

I guess I need to take a number & join the Warrior Battalion of Injured Athletes.

Fortunately for me it's a shoulder and not a leg. I have a nice case of bursitis in my right shoulder that blew up a few days ago. Fortunately (for I am a WIMP!!!) there is no pain, just restricted mobility in the effected joint. Had a shot of cortisone monday & orders to take it easy on the weights for a while. Ugh.

Had a great day at work yesterday! The day was filled with a bunch of BS administrative junk, the evening with a bunch of medical calls, and to top it off a local bar caught fire at 2:30 a.m.. We FINALLY got our first (brief) sleep of the shift at 5 a.m.. And a fun time was had by all!!

John - hope the "neck thing" works out ok and that you can avoid a fusion. I have had 2 surgeons invite me to their tables for a L3 --> S1 fusion in the last 18 months. Thus far I have graciously declined their invitation. Hopefully forever.

Kate - Hope the foot gets better! Don't push it and cause more damage!

Rock on Warriors!!

Oh my.... we really are a bunch of walking wounded warriors! Such a great advert for exercise :rotfl:

Jim sorry that your shoulder popped! I'm amazed that sort of thing is not painful, it sounds sore! Your shift sounds wonderful to me, a good mix of things

Amy great work on signing up an accomplice for the 1/2. It makes such a difference being able to train with someone.

John so sorry that your neurosurgeon was not happy- they don't seem to bring good news on this board! Pleased to hear your clavicle is healing, but throwing a ton of pixie dust at you to help your neck.

Sarah cross training is wonderful for running too, so perhaps you're more trained than you think? Great plan getting into the YMCA though, I'm sure it'll be easier working out whilst Callum plays. OK- I'm sure my pain is nothing like if it had been dislocated- you are insanely brave!

Kathy good job on the 5k and keeping in 16mm pace. I hope you're taking lots of time for you too.

Amanda how was the running clinic? :cheer2:

Pam how's the brace holding up for your knee?

Me lots of swimming, can't bike it hurts. I smell of chlorine and my hair's frizzy so all is good :D Imagine a fluffy shark.... that's me :goodvibes I can walk better in my trainers, really struggling in my flat work shoes though so applying a ton of ice. On a more positive note we went away for a night in a wonderful spa- my first ever spa experience and I loved it!!!! Especially being wrapped in algae and thoroughly scrubbed :woohoo: What a fantabulous treat.

:grouphug:

Jeremy - Good point. That was my very slow and very short "long run." :lmao:
Kathy - Glad you were able to get out.
Sarah - Wow! A tri and a half. With a baby! I'm impressed.
John - I'm sorry to hear about the cervical spine issue. Sending thoughts and prayers!
Becky - Training for the half sounds like a good alternative! :thumbsup2
Jim - Sorry about the bursitis. And the crazy day of work!
Kate - I'm sorry that you're still having so much pain. Glad the spa was a good experience!

I loved my running clinic on Monday! It was fun to meet a completely new group of women. We started at the running store with a little talk. Then we divided ourselves into group. They had a run/walk group, a run 1-2 mile groups, and a run 3-5 mile group. I've been doing Galloway training so I normally do run/walk but I got the feeling that the run/walk group was a bit more beginner than I am. I picked the run 1-2 mile group and I think that was the right choice. I felt good at the end of the 1.75 mile run. I don't think I would have felt as good if I had picked the higher mileage group. I did a treadmill run today (rainy and cold out) and it felt pretty good. Sunday I'll do a 4 mile "long" run. I'm really looking forward to the Monday group again!

Amanda

Wow! We Warriors are seeming to be a hurting kind of bunch these days.

Thanks everyone for all your kind thoughts. It has been a week since surgery. Turns out there was a meniscus issue involved too. So all supposedly cleaned up and healing is underway. Bandages removed yesterday. He said the stitched didn't look ready to come out. I have swelling that is borderline in need of drainage. Going back Monday to have stitches removed and evaluate on drainage. I am doing everything icing, elevating and the limited mobility exercises then icing after. Hoping it will look better Monday.

I walked for 15 minutes today covered about .5 mile and it felt wonderful to be out there. Slow though, and I hope it was not considered over doing. I just had to do it.

Lily, glad you made it out. :cool1:

I got good news from orthopedic surgeon this morning. As of next week, no more figure 8 brace or sling. Clavicle is healing fine and 1 month back for a visit. Dr. was running very late so I had Kathy drop me off 5 miles from home at food store since she had to back-track to get to work on time. I bought a banana and a 20oz. Mtn. Dew, started walking with a 12mph wind pushing me and made it home in 1hr. 20min.

We brought my neck x-rays with us so Dr. could have a look at my C6 fracture and he said right off the bat that a fusion from C5 to C6 to C7 looks to be in order. CT-Scan is tomorrow with neurosurgeon visit next Thursday and I expect the same diagnoses.

Just a passing thought, STAY HEALTHY OR GET HEALTHY, WARRIORS.

Hi Warriors

Kathy - I'll make it to DL. When things get closer we may need to see about plans for a WISH meet on Saturday Evening.

Sarah - Hope the 8 miler this weekend goes well. I agree Vegas can be lots of walking.

JohnVN - Good to hear the Dr. visit went well.

Amy - Good luck with the W&D training.

JimB - Hope the shoulder heals quickly.

Kate - Keep taking it easy and let things heal.

Amanda - Glad the running clinic went well.

Lily - Glad to hear the surgery went well. Keep it up slow and steady and you'll be back to 100% soon.

AFM - It been a pretty good week. Knees feeling good. It must have been just a fluke a couple of weeks ago that took a little bit to workout. Continuing with 5K training combined with keeping miles up for Disneyland which has led to at least 1 strange workout.

Monday - 6x400 speedwork + easy running/walking for 3.75 miles (was wanting 4 but miscounted laps)

Wednesday - 1/2 mile warmup, 1.25 miles all running, .25 miles recovery 1.5 miles run 1:40/walk :40, slow run :30/walk :45 for cool down (I've found I really like the :30/45 better than my run 1/walk 2 I was doing on easy days.)

Friday 7 miles run :30/Walk :45.

It. Is. REALLY. Hot. Here. Low 90's right now I think.

I did 6 miles today, running 5 minutes/walking 1. I ran till my water was gone, then said "That's it, party's over" & came home.

While taking a shortcut through the woods I came within about 1 second & 2 inches of stepping on a diamond rattlesnake blocking the path. Fortunately, I missed him. He went his way & I went mine. No harm done, but I think I may avoid that way from now on............

Had fun w/my DD @ EE, but she needs lots of cardio work.

Don't have another race on the books until the W&D Relay in the fall. It's also time to start some serious Tri training. I've decided to point to the Florida 1/2 IM in May 2012. Lots of work ahead, and I need my shoulder to clear up to really get some decent swim work done.

Ya'll are healing great!!! Keep it up!! :rotfl::rotfl:

Jim don't play with rattlesnakes!!!! My word! I'm glad you both went your own way. Excellent news that you have a 1/2 IM to aim for- take care in the build up though. How hard were the EE clues this year? I'm hoping it might be on when we're there next year!

Jeremy great that your knee's holidng up. Looks like a cracking line up of exercise regimes there!

John :yay: for your clavicle healing, sorry about the anticipated fusion though. Let us know how you get on. Brilliant walk back home though!

Lily I'm watching your progress and it looks fab- fingers crossed you'll be pain free very soon.

Amanda sometimes there really is nothing better than a social run and it looks like you've found a really good group. Really pleased for you  Boo for having to hit the treadmill though!

me physio today- he's certain now it's fractured, but still doesn't see the point in xray or scan as treatment apparently wouldn't change. Guess I should trust him as he's been my physio for 3 years now! We've ruled out cycling as the push down action hurts, no kicking in the pool now either as he wants it to heal more quickly. So.... what can i do?!?!?! My dissertation :lmao: perfect time to be stuck in with stats! Actually I love it, spent some time in the local University library as I am a true and happy little geek at times :rolleyes1

Hi all

Kate - So are you a SAS or SPSS kind of lady. I got tripped on in the comprehensive exam stage of my doctoral program 10 years ago.

Jim - I don't know if I could live in Florida in the summer with that heat. It was 78 outside when I finished my run this morning and I thought that was hot in the sunny parts.

AFM - I'm still in hybrid 5K/ half marathon training mode.

May 9th Magic Mile (with walk breaks every 400m) then easy run:30/walk:45
May 11th 2x1,600m race rehearsals first 1 run 1:20/walk:40, Second one Run 2:00/walk 1:00.
May 13th Warm but easy 7 miles.

Jeremy: Have fun with your 7 miles tomorrow!

Kate: Hope you recover quickly! Summer dissertations are no fun. :D I had to write my MA thesis during the entire month of July a couple years ago.... it was torture being inside with my research while the weather was nice!

Jim: I still don't know how you Floridians train in the summer! Here in Seattle, it hits 75 and everyone hides in the nearest Starbucks and complains! :rotfl2:

Lily: Hope you're healing! Take it easy on that knee!

I'm still swimming and biking and not running nearly enough. :lmao: I'm going to head to the gym as soon as the kid wakes up from his nap for a bit more biking, and then I have a 6 mile run tomorrow with the Arthritis Foundation. It looks like I'm going to be the most undertrained I've ever been for my half marathon in a couple weeks, but I'm strangely not concerned at all. :lmao: It'll get done.

I also joined a tri club this week, so I'm looking forward to some group bikes and lake swims. They have a few indoor tri's this summer, but I'm going to be out of town for all but the last one. I'm also thinking about adding another tri to my schedule in July.... it's really close to where I live, so it would be a good one to do.

Kate - So are you a SAS or SPSS kind of lady. I got tripped on in the comprehensive exam stage of my doctoral program 10 years ago.

I am an SPSS lady! Well it's PASW now, but the same thing. I'm totally flummoxed by an online tool my supervisor has sent me for working out interactions on multiple regressions-

http://www.people.ku.edu/~preacher/interact/mlr2.htm

If this makes sense to you then PLEASE do share! I can't work out which bits on the tool refer to which bits in the PASW output :surfweb:

Anyway, stats over! Well done running in the heat and for keeping it going. Lots of rehearsals are wonderful. Great stuff!

Oh Sarah I missed your post! Fantastic attitude about the half, I'm finding you super inspiring at the moment!!!! The new tri club sounds great, sad that you miss out on 2 of the events though :headache:

Kate - unfortunately, it's been too long since I looked at any high level statistics to make out anything in that website that would be useful.

Happy Sunday Warriors!!!

Not much going on down here. We had our first rain in weeks yesterday afternoon. Thank Goodness! At least a day or 2 without fighting brush fires.

I'm (sloooooowly) trying to start some serious triathlon training. Did a short, slow 30 mile ride yesterday. My life was then overcome by events and was unable to run.

Bursitis in my shoulder is making it difficult to swim for a bit.

Kate - your website was frickin' swahili to me. Sorry. BTW - the EE clues were ok. 2 were easy, 1 was medium & 1 my DD & I were just a couple of morons on. But it was still fun!!

PS - No snakes lately!

I'm in a group discussion and asked, "Well John, what do you think?"

My reply, "I stopped thinking because it gives me a headache".

Kate, one look at the site and I need whole bottle of headache pills. :lmao:

Jim, got some much needed rain yesterday afternoon and this AM before Kathy and I got out for a walk. Maybe the temps might stay in the low to mid 80's now.

My neurosurgeon visit on Thursday was not too bad. C6 fracture is healing, 6 more weeks at least in neck collar but back in 4 weeks after another X-ray. He is not happy with slippage of C5 and C6. Has not ruled out fusion yet.

Yesterday was 6 weeks since bike crash so I walked 10K to meet with the guys I rode with. Fast walk out, 66 minutes, then took it easy on way back home with a short cut so totalled 11.36 miles.

Hoping everyone is healing and will have a good week.

Hope all who are in healing mode are healing well!

I had a 5K on base last Wednesday and have another this Wednesday. My Cheif and I should be starting our W&D Half training very soon. I also went to Fit-to-Run last Saturday and bought new shoes, as well as some inserts. Hopefully this will reduce the post-run knee pain. One of these days, I've got to get in to the clinic just to have that put in my records. I don't want to get on a no-running profile - I just want it noted in my medical records in case I have problems after retirement so it can be covered by the VA.

Happy training this week everyone!

Hi Warrior

JimB- Glad to hear your getting some rain. You can have some of ours, or maybe I should say borrow it. Last couple of years we've had wet springs followed by dry summers.

John - Keep working on healing up.

Amy - Congratulations on the 5k's

It's been a pretty good week this week. Still doing modified 5K training getting ready for a June 10th 5K then transitioning into Training for the DL half.

Monday 4 miles with a 1.25 mi and 1 mi. stretch of all running.

Wednesday- 4 miles total. Was going to be 2 1.5 mile race rehearsals. Did 1st 1.5 miles too fast, Walked .25 miles did second 1.25 miles closer to the pace I wanted. Finished my fastest 5K section is 37:30 a new best for me. I'm hoping for 36:xx in the race June 10th. I think pacing is going to be the key.

Today- did 6 slow easy miles. I'd been doing 7 the past 3 weeks so this was a nice easy cut back week.
