Quick question - can you take the boat from the CR to Whispering Canyon as easy as you took it on the way back to CR? And is it an easy walk to MK (we will have small kids in tow)! lol TIA!

Yes, the boat is straight to the WL from the CR on the way back it stops at the campground.

It is an easy walk to MK and we preferred it when my son was asleep in the stroller, but it is 10ish minutes. In the heat or if they aren't up to the walk you might be happier on the monorail.

Somehow I had forgotten that the monorail wasn't a straight shot to MK in both direcitons, so on a particularly hot and humid morning this September, when DH wanted to take the path, I convinced him to take the monorail. I was nearly jumping out of my skin when I realized it was the last stop to the park! (TTC, Poly, Grand Floridian, and finally MK). Just keep that in mind if you are an anxious, excitable type like me!

So I probably should have double checked this thread to make sure Outer Rim was still open before my adventure this weekend....

My fiance and I were staying at BWV, but she had to work until 6 and was going to join me later. So I planned on watching the first quarter of the Gator game at ESPN, then cutting through Epcot to the monorail and watching the rest at Outer Rim. Yea I know I could have taken the bus to MK and walked, but I enjoy the monorail, and I was curious to see some of the F&W offerings. Anyway, after a half hour trek I get to the CR only to find OUTER RIM CLOSED! I knew it was due to close at some point for the Chef Mickey's expansion, but I didnt think it had happened yet. Is it gone for good, or just during the construction? Anyway all I could do was laugh and turn around and head back.

I was pleased to see that they are doing some work in the Concourse. More specificially they are painting the ceiling. It has always drove me crazy to look up and see the giant water stains on the roof.

I too hope that when all construction is finished on the concourse that they'll be a place for the Outer Rim again...

One of the nicest things is to sit in the big open concourse and enjoy the monorail going thru (Concourse Steak House was nice for that too)...the unique architecture of the CR:) There dosent seem to be any place to do that anymore...too bad..:sad2:

The way I understood it is that, at its former location it would close, then reopen somewhere else on the fourth floor...

Spaceace I sure hope that you're right...

The concourse used to have so many nice individual shops and restaurants...now it seem like its going to be one big Chef Mickeys and one big shop...

Been a CR fan for a very long time and while I love the new rooms and some of the other changes as well I've not been too happy with what I've seen on the 4th floor....

Trying to keep an open mind...maybe it'll all be great:confused:

I heard they would re-open it just a few feet away from where they have the Tempo Grab & Go, however they can not start doing that until they open the Contempo Cafe.

Besides that I don't think Chef Mickey's will be expanding. Now one Cast Member told me it will, however when I brought that up to every other Cast Member they said it's not. Plus if that were true how could they expand it without closing it for a while, since they would need to work over there during morning hours and etc.

The Contemporary also has the Bay View Gifts store and the Sundries store, however it's just that the new Fantasia store really stands out. Besides that the Contempo Cafe will be moving into the old Concourse Steakhouse location and it's lets hope it's true that the Outer Rim is moving a few feet to where they currently have the Tempo Grab & Go.

CR fan I know you're right there are a few shops still on the 4th floor but not like there used to be...there used to be the Contemporary Woman-lots of nice clothes kind of like Summer Lace at the GF and Contemporary Man-same type of thing..even an individual jewelry store...(as I said been going to the CR for a long time...)

And the old game room was great!! The new one is ok but dosent compare to the old one...

No matter what it is still one of the original WDW hotels that makes it special in itself...not to mention those most incredible views:)

Is the Contempo Cafe going where the old Concourse Steakhouse was? I probably should have added that they had a wall up encompasing most of the Outer Rim area, all they way over to the entrance to the Concourse. I could have sworn I saw a sign on the wall referencing Chef Mickey's, but I did not read it so maybe it was just a directional sign to the podium, and I assumed it was talking about an expansion.

The Wave had a bar you could sit at and enjoy but I don't know about a TV there to watch the game. Even better, you can get a drink to go. :thumbsup2

Yes the Contempo Cafe will be opening up inside the old Concourse Steakhouse location. I believe the sign you saw at Chef Mickey's was just saying where to check-in for your ADR because I saw the same thing, so I would not read to much into that.

For our December 2009, plan was for CR Tower MK view, but then began to worry that we could be directly over the Convention Center, which we would not enjoy. Have not gone back to CR b/c not sure we'd like the bown decor. Like light room decor, but love Poly and those =room are definitely not light and tropical.

Never thought of a room location request for the Tower, but haven't stayed in a Tower room since the late '80's!! Definitely time to go "home" - CR was our first Disney resort in 1981 and for yrs we went twice a yr alternating CR/Poly. Monorail resorts are a vacation within a vacation :)

Considering a CSR Club room (so affordable), but know we'll be sorry we didn't stay at a monorial resort...it's time to go back to CR. ::yes::

Any room location request suggestions?

TIA :flower3:

No matter what room you would get on the Magic Kingdom you will have an amazing view. Now there are some rooms on the Magic Kingdom side that will be over the convention center, however you won't see anything but the top of it. Anyway here is a link to the map of the Contemporary and you will see the where the Tower rooms on the covention side would be located. http://www.wdwinfo.com/resortmaps/contempmap.htm

Thanks much!

Nothing like pulling into the monorail station and being "home". We enjoy Poly and GF, but there is something special about CR.

Thanks again!
p.s. Would/could one request a room on the north end of the Tower, so as not to be over the convention center? Would that even make sense to the room assigner? Do not mean to be picky - have an medical eye issue - we were in a room at BC which was directly over the white roof - caused severe eye pain, so must try to avoid that kind of situation. Thanks!

Thanks much! We've stayed in a MK Tower view room, but it was long before the convention center or the rate for that view, so memory is not so good ...will check out the link. Definitely excited to stay at CR again.

You're welcome.

Yes you can make that request and the way you described it makes sense to me.

We're just back from a 4 night stay at the Contemporary... so I wanted to give you guys some info/thoughts since you all were so helpful before we left…

Check in was a breeze. I've read horror stories. :confused3 We walked in and were greeted by the gentleman who was stationed by the front door, he walked us to the front desk, and our room was ready when we got there at 11:00 am. The front desk staff couldn't have been nicer. The man at the door was there every day, greeting guests, directing them, handing out stickers to the kids and answering questions and the line at the front desk never seemed long when we passed through.

Room - I booked the cheapest room they have - garden wing standard view with a discounted pin code and I was fully prepared to be staring at the parking lot or a brick wall. Much to my surprise, we were upgraded (without asking) to the a 6th floor Tower room with a Bay Lake view. :cool1: It was all the way at the end of the building, basically above Chef Mickey's. It was great to be in the tower, close to the monorail and less of a walk to MK.

Now...had I paid rack rate of $350/night, or if this was a "once in a lifetime" type of trip, I may have had an issue with both the construction noise AND the Chef Mickey's noise from that room location. And I swear I'm not one of those picky, “everything has to be perfect at Disney” type of people – we've stayed at AKL during the construction and am not easily bothered. But I can confidently tell you that the staff at Chef Mickey’s starts setting up at 5:30 am, and the first round of “Celebrate” is at 7:30 am. The music and the construction were both much louder than I expected it to be. (They should re-name it Echo Canyon Concourse :rotfl: ) We discovered that turning the A/C fan to high instead of auto generated "white noise" just loud enough to drown it out...plus we were exhausted! And honestly, since I paid for a parking lot view in the back building, it was still fine with me! Hakuna Matata!

The much hated sinks didn’t bother me either – mostly because I invested $1.00 in one of those pocket toiletry storage thingy’s that hang over the shower bar – I just hung it on the outside of the shower and it held everything we needed. And I plugged my flat-iron for my hair on the counter above the ‘fridge to warm up, then just moved it when I was ready to use it. Other storage - we unpacked our clothes into the drawers – my son and husband had a drawer each – the ones on the side of the bed near the computer. I slid the computer and chair down away from the bed and moved the side part of the desk (on wheels) into the corner next to the TV to give us a little more room to get into those drawers. I used the small drawers in the closet and we were fine. But we’re a small family and this was a quick trip. Our mouse-keepers were wonderful. The room was always made up early, and she left a towel swan for us one day. Another day, we came back to the room to find the TV on and my son’s stuffed Rex (from Toy Story) holding the remote on the bed. He thought that was hilarious.

Contempo - no one I spoke to would commit to a time that it's opening. "In a few months" or "by the end of the year" was the most specific I could get out of anyone. I did see some actual progress though - there is tile on the floor (covered to protect it, but I saw them putting it down), there are cabinet-type things going in that appear to be the things that hold the cash registers. There's beige striped wallpaper up on the back wall – everything was mostly all neutral colors and dark woods similar to the rooms. And where are the pictures you ask?? Sorry…I warned you before I left…I’m not good about pictures. But I promise, there was actual progress since the last pictures that were posted, so I’m sure they’ll finish… eventually…

Tempo Grab and Go - For us, even with the amount of time we spent in the parks, having such a small quick service selection with a fairly picky child was an issue. We normally eat breakfast at the resort every day (except for 1 character breakfast), so having a choice of only scrambled eggs as a hot breakfast was not good for us. I heard lots of complaints, mostly from families and kids. And I realize it’s a temporary location, but the size and the way it’s set up is very conducive to people bumping into each other with trays. Also, I’ve done DDP before, so I know how it works. But based on my many years of experience in customer service, you cannot assume that customers “know the drill” and the staff should be able to respond with something other than a deer-in-the-headlights stare and barking about selecting from the badly marked “kids corner”. I guess I’m spoiled – I’m used to The Mara at Animal Kingdom Lodge with has a great selection and fabulous knowledgeable staff. I hope that the new permanent installation is more along the lines of what I’ve experienced there. I felt kind of bad for the people that had their first DDP quick service experience there – it was not good. :sad2:

Unfortunately it was a quick trip, so we were in the parks most of the time and did not set foot outside near the pool, dock, beach, etc. My son was dying to go jump in the fountain play area, and the hot tub in the middle of the pool looked great, but we just never got there.

All in all, we really enjoyed our stay there, and will consider it again - once Contempo is open and running. The location is FABULOUS – can’t beat it. We spent 2 of our 5 days at Magic Kingdom and 1 at Epcot, so having the monorail right there was terrific. We also loved being able to watch the fireworks from the 4th floor patio. I liked the décor – even though I’m at Disney, I like to be able to go back to my room at the end of a day at the parks and kind of escape from the whole cartoon-ish Mickey Mouse feel. So this (and AKL) fit the bill perfectly. It was like going to a higher end Manhattan hotel and not something campy and over-themed.

If anyone has any specific questions, fire away.

I enjoyed reading your review and it's great you enjoyed staying at the Contemporary. :thumbsup2

Wow thanks for the report. Congrats on the great upgrade.

We leave in 2 days and have a BL View. I hope we are high enough or far enough from CM not to hear the noise:scared1: My husband will not be happy for the amount we are paying per night.

We planned on bringing some breakfast foods since the new express restraunt is not open yet and after reading your review, I am glad we are.

What time did the constuction start and end? Did they work on the weekend?

Is it really hot and humid? All the weather reports have been saying yes :sad2:

All in all it sounds like you had a great time!
