Kids stole the keys from the dog at POTC

We saw a girl jump off the boat in Mexico and jump back on, no one cared. We were shocked.:confused3

We rode today and spoke with a CM about it. He happened to be one of the CMs there the night it happened. He stated that none of the sensors went off to alert CM's that there was someone out of a boat. He said they do have pictures and video of 4 young men. He felt excess alcohol was involved.

The keys have been replaced. You can tell they are different but most would not notice that.

So sad to see such poor behavior in some people these days.

In general MK was a mad house today. I am completely disliking the fast pass system. It did not work well for us at all. Way too much walking from one part of the park to the other and too many bad return times for us to try to ride and have a dinner. I have blisters on my feet for the first time in 10 years! It sucks!

College age kids have been doing stupid stunts like this from the beginning of time. They are usually drunk. It is usually on a dare. They are usually caught--they cannot help bragging. It does not signal the downfall of civilization. It sounds almost like a frat stunt to me. Does not excuse the behavior and I hope they do get caught, but I think some are making what they did sound like it was SO excessively evil.

They must have been pretty athletic to jump all the way from the boat to the shore; that's further than I could ever jump!

Does anybody else notice how Disney seems to be slipping on safety? We had the Soarin problem with the kids wiggling out of the restraints, then the adult almost getting away with having a kid on her lap on the same ride. Now this. I will always love WDW, but I think Disney is starting to slack.
Or guests are getting bolder and stupider.

It's kind of like things like "the shoe bomb" -- no one in a million years would have thought to have people take off their shoes and check for explosives until some guy tried it. Now ... we all take off our shoes.

For years and years, incidents of "stupid guest tricks" were few and far between. Then the internet happened and now people feel the need to populate their FB pages with photos of them doing things that they would have never attempted before the advent of video cameras on phones. Or people read about how this ride or that ride is particularly strict on safety or height requirements and so they decide that they're going to "prove all the 'experts' wrong" or whatever. People spend too much time trying to either get around the rules or one-up each other, just so that they can put it on the internet.

Even here on th DIS -- how many people have you read about who brag about being able to carry a pocketknife into WDW? Or how someone managed to sneak into MVMCP without anyone even checking for a wristband? Or how they "stood their ground" and "got Security involved" because someone took their table at Pecos Bills. Some people relish being able to tell others about some daring feat or whatever that they did. How much of it would be done if it couldn't be bragged about on a large public forum?

:earsboy:

I don't know what upsets me the most, the fact that they walked around the attraction and stole something, or the fact that they weren't noticed at all by CM or Security. I can see them possibly not watching the monitors since it was the last of the day. But I wouldn't think that they would turn the sensors off already. Anyway, when people do stupid things everyone else has to pay for it.

Well said.:thumbsup2

I teach high school and I see this type of behavior every day. It boils down to a complete lack of respect for anything or anyone...the world revolves around them and Mama agrees with him/her. Parents approve of this behavior by never correcting this behavior and pitching a fit when someone else corrects this behavior. Sad that it has now extended to WDW.

Any now they are growing up to occupy Wall Street.

This is what I was wondering. There is a bit of a distance from the boat to the 'land.'

I've never, thankfully, in all my trips seen anyone do such a thing. Crazy! :furious:

I think the story is incredulous and hard to believe, but I believe you. If you had ten posts--not so much. ;). :goodvibes

I am really surprised that people find this so hard to believe. The comment about perhaps not believing someone with only 10 posts made me laugh.

Personally, I have lurked on this board for years, and I probably have never really said thank you to everyone who has posted over the years with various tips. While I have had under a dozen posts myself, I am a DVC member, AP holder, and throughout my life, I have probably lived at Disney World for probably close to a year (Bi-annual trips as a kid, annual trips as a young adult, and two to three trips a year in more recent times).

Not only do I find the OP’s story plausible, I have seen similar things over the years. People out of the boats on IASW, people grabbing at things from many rides. I have seen people steal the red timing cards they hand to people to monitor the line length. I have seen people hit the magic button on the back of the fast pass machines when nobody is looking. I have seen people steal from the stores, many times.

The fact of the matter is when you have tens of thousands of people together, there will be a few bad apples. We actually even had stuff stolen from our room once. Yes our Disney hotel room! (as a side note, I was very impressed with how Disney handled the situation. Then again, I was very easy going with them. Sometimes, you get what you give.)

I think the surprise wasn't in that people attempting it, but in Disney not stopping them in the act. There are security cams on that ride, it's just surprising to many that gaps in coverage occurred.

I find it hard to believe that the attraction CMs were that asleep at the switch. Simple as that. Do you not? The same CMs that announce in the middle of a ride not to take flash photography (as they should)?

As for post count, as a long-time lurker surely you understand the number of trolls that come here looking to stir up lively debate. Since the OP doesn't fit that profile--and post count is a big component of it--I reassured them that I believe them, as if they might even care.

From what I understand, there are quite a few levels of security at Disney. Besides the cast members that we see, and uniformed security, there also appears to always be a sheriff’s deputy around, and several dozen plainclothes security people.

I agree, it sounds like this was just the perfect storm, an end of day ride on a very empty ride. Cast members probably starting to clean up and do their end of day activities, and not watching the monitors. Sensors not working, and people acting like idiots. The perfect storm.

Go back a few posts where the one poster spoke to a CM that stated the sensors never went off. It was the same thing we were told by two different CMs when we reported what happened. It wasn't them "asleep". The sensors failed.

Well if these drunk idiots were idiot enough to do what they did, they're probably idiot enough to brag online about it. I hope Disney is scouring Google and the interwebz for the eventual "Look what we did!" post.

No, I agree. As I just posted, it sounds like the perfect storm.

Yes, I understand, there are a lot of trolls out there (a big part of the reason why I rarely post anywhere). But I do point out that even at Disney, things are not always so magical. When we are there, we let our guard down. I personally have never had an incident in the parks. I have forgotten our camera and/or phones inside our stroller, and never had an issue.

But, I have seen quite a few people doing stupid things over the years. As much as Disney may have great security, they cannot be everywhere. I see plenty of people stealing soda from the soda fountains (i.e. not using a Disney cup or mug). I have seen kids (teenagers) steal candy and chips from various stores on a few occasions. I saw one adult go over and steal fruit from one of the “portable” stands in the middle of a downpour (I was standing with the cashier and her register under the tiki room waiting area).

My point is, incidents like this probably happen much more than we hear about.
