Kids stole the keys from the dog at POTC

Don't know is a valid excuse. Not everyone pours over the Internet, discussion boards or even park maps before the trip. it may be common knowledge to people who have been around here for a long time but not in the real world.

I do think there is an announcement prior to the boats launching where it states no flash photography if you listened carefully so don't know really isn't a valid excuse.. no one needs to read these boards to know that you aren't suppose to use flash photography on the attractions in the park... Disney tell you this..:upsidedow

I have not read every post in this thread. It is sad that people act this way. It is wrong too. What is even worse is that the security cameras were not ON!::yes:: OMG as another poster in the start of this thread commented, what would have happened if someone had a seizure or a heart attack.. there was no way of anyone knowing! There is a real lack of security when those cameras are not working. Disney should take more of a proactive course of action in safety..it is not just for preventing senseless idiots from creating havoc and or stealing.

After the kid stole the keys, the dog shoulda bit him on the ankle. ;)

Who says the cameras weren't working? And if someone had a seizure the quickest way off the ride is... riding it to the end.

This is all true, to a point, but it's important to remember that what is described in this thread is not the behavior of "people" as a whole. It is something that happens very rarely and is certainly not something that is a daily occurance. The overwhelming majority of guests are very respectful of the rides, parks, property and resorts. But, as is true everywhere in the world -- from the local playground to the great churches of Europe -- there will always be some foolish tourist trying to do some outlandish prank.

No one is making an excuse for the college kids behaving badly -- they're simply saying that there are certain things that not even Disney can control.

:earsboy:

Unfortunately, it's not as rare as it used to be. A large portion of guests go to WDW for the experience, the history, the magic, and to get away from reality. A lot go to just ride rides and have some fun. The majority are very respectful. But there are more and more that go and treat it like it's just an amusement park and could really care less about it in any form. They believe that they paid their money and should be able to do what ever they want because WDW owes them. Some, like the idiots on POTC, just want to see what they can get away w/ to brag online or post video to youtube etc.

This thread is just one example of what someone witnessed and decided to share. But I can almost guarantee that things like this occur, maybe not to this extent, on a daily level now. WDW cannot control everything, they do their best, but this POTC incident was a major miss on their part this time.

And like I said, if said idiots got hurt, here comes another lawsuit because WDW did not have the proper retraining devices in the POTC boats. WDW will always be to blame even though it's not there fault.

I can't wait for the day when WDW will need to screen guests like the airports and every ride will need some kind of harness, belt, lapbar etc. What time does MK open, 8am for EMH?, okay got to get there by 6 to get through security. Don't laugh, could happen.

While reading this thread I keep thinking about the kid with the harmonica thread over on the Community Board. The only real difference is the age of the offenders. This is what happens when there is lack of accountability and kids get to do whatever they "want" with no regard for others.

No there wouldn't.

Say a stupid college kid decides to try and jump off the boat and grab the keys on POTC. There are rules posted everywhere. Constant reminders from the CMs. Undercover security on the ride. Armed guards in the queue. Whatever. That kid is still going to try and get away with it. It's a dare. Or it's stupidity. Or it's bravado.

So, he tries to jump the boat and makes it to the jail scene. The ride stops, lights go on, alarms sound, CMs appear. The kid is arrested for trespassing. He has to pay a large fine. It gets written up in the paper and online -- people are posting about how this kid got hauled off the ride and arrested for leaving the boat.

Do you really think that that's going to stop anyone else from trying to do the very same thing? Of course it won't. Because someone else out there who is just as dumb as the first kid is going to read that and think, "That's BS! I'll bet I could jump that boat and get those keys and not get caught!" and the cycle begins again.

It's nice to think that "if Disney cracked down, this would stop" or "if we all stopped excusing this behavior, it would stop", but it's not true. Because, unfortunately, there's always going to be one more person who thinks they can do something dumber than the last guy.

:earsboy:

I never said that Disney needs to "crack down". It is the parents, society, the schools that need to instill a respect for rules, society and the individual. It (sort of) cracks me up to read on here how bent out of shape people get when someone decides they'll park at a resort to beat the parking fee and then how they snicker when people sneak booze into MK. Selective morality. Someone noted that since Disney doesn't enforce their rules they are just suggestions. Can you imagine the hue and cry if Disney does "crack down" and begins to stricktly enforce the rules?

TL;DR, but you know that in 1975, a group of college kids did the same thing but were killed by the moving animatronics (back then they moved faster and less predicably). One was found with the dog's keys in hand! Ever since folks occasionally report seeing a group of "kids", usually on the last few boats, doing the same thing. Security chases them but they are never caught and the keys seem to reappear not long after!

So creepy! I heard it from an uncle who's college roomate was the best man of a guy who married a girl who's sister was the childhood friend of a boy who's dad was a castmember in Space Mountain when he heard the story.

The whole "they didn't hear/understand the announcement about flash pictures" thing doesn't wash for me. If you've got at least one eyeball and two brain cells to rub together, you know that taking flash pictures in a dark ride isn't a good idea.

Agree 100% :thumbsup2 Recent example of what you said is the FP enforcement. Always was a rule, just not strictly enforced. Now that it is :scared1:

Good thing i wasnt there for this because POTC is my all tim favorite ride and these jokers would have had to deal with a Pirate from NJ

:lmao: I was wondering when Robo was going to post!

I just think it's great how this thread has turned into a thesis on flash photography during dark rides.

There will always be idiots in this world that we have to deal with. Unfortunately the OP had to witness them. Thanks for sharing the story even though you were scrutinized within an inch of your life. :flower3:

I read that and thought. . WOW how fun would that be! I want that job!!! Then I thought about it again and realized with MY luck I'd be the undercover rider for "It's a Small World" !!!:rolleyes1

I'm picturing the undercover security guard disguised as an animatronic, mingling with the other figures in the scenes. You're noticing how realistic the pirate's hairy leg looks, you try to take a flash picture of it, and bam! It kicks the camera out of your hands!

Now I have to picture him dressed as a can-can dancer, singing the "ooh-la-la" chorus of "It's a Small World After All" while he keeps his eye peeled for hands dipping in the water.

I'm keeping a close eye on Martin van Buren next time I'm at the Hall of presidents. He's always looked a little sketchy to me. ;)

For some reason I just got a flash of Joe Swanson from Family Guy in this undercover roll...

LOL Now THAT might even be MORE fun!!!

I haven't read all of this...and I'm obviously late to the game, but it makes me think of the movie, "Exit through the Gift Shop" about graffiti artist Banksy.

The Disneyland scene is the reason I posted. (Easy to find online with ten second search.)

While I think this thread is about an incident of straight vandalism, the film is applicable because Banksy climbs into the BTMRR attraction to create his art. (and puts up an infaltable doll)

The whole film begs for a discussion of where we draw the line between creation and destruction.

Finally finished reading it all. I will never understand people. I work in the service industry and deal with people all day long. The things that come out of peoples mouths and their actions blow me away.
I find it sad that people cant follow the rules. Do we really need to steal things or even get out of a ride when you know to keep your butt seated?!?! There is always someone that ruins it for the rest of us. Good thing I was taught manners and respect!
Hope the guys do brag about what they did on FB and get caught.
