can anyone help me with this?

Here is what I do. I could be wrong but it works for me.

I make a 5/8" narrow hem. I then fold over about 1 inch and press. I sew along the bottom of the fold and leave around three inches open. Next I insert my elastic with a safety pin. The safety pin gives me something to hold on to. I pin the second end to the end of the opening. When the elastic is through the channel I sew the two ends together. Then I sew the three inch opening up.

I will post a photo of the pirate skirt channel I made. That was the most successful. For some reason it took me a couple skirts to figure this one out!:scared:

HELP WITH A TWIRL SKIRT QUESTION PLEASE :scared:

so I am sitting at my desk for lunch actaully cutting all the fabric I marked out last night to make one of the patchwork twirl skirts...I have been reading and lurking for weeks and hope to pull out my MIL hand-me-down sewing machine tonight and take the plunge....(I don't sew I hot glue !!!)

so I read with great interest UtahMama's sewing report and hope to have learned from Lisa's follow up suggestion to start from the bottom....

still have 2 questions....

#1-do you sew each tier into a circle before you sew it to the next teir? If so why? why not sew straight and then sew up a side?

#2-do the teir skirts usually have a ruffle also at the bottom or is it too heavy to add that too and should I just do a straight hem...

thanks...I am sooooo nervous

BTW my co-workers think I am crazy - they have never heard of someone making an outfit just for a trip....if they only knew.....

#1 Because!
J/K, I have no idea why but The tiers may not line up right if you do the side seam last? Hmmmm...

#2, is up to you! I've seen them just hemmed, bias tape edged, fancy ruffles, ric-rac...etc. I made a cool ruffle with lime green tulle I'm needing a break from at the moment. Any weight is coming from the 50 yards of fabric being used ;)

Hopefully someone more experienced will answer your #1 question.

What kind of fabric are you planning on using? :yay:

ok, I was busy while I was away from the board for a week. Here are 2 of the outfits I finished! oh, and Josephine always feels the need to wear sunglasses. of course we are in AZ and sometimes the glare is huge - no clouds for days!

Hi! I finally thnk I have enough posts to post a photo but I'm unsure about how to do it. I have cute outfits of my girls from our trip to WDW in their custom outfits that I would like to share but I have no idea how to do it. I've been lurking around this thread for weeks and I love everything that everyone makes and I think I'm ready to make my picture debut! Thanks for any help you can give me!

Go to photobucket.com. You can upload your pics there. The ask you to select the file and all you do is hit upload. When they are uploaded copy and paste the IMG code located under the picture.

Have fun and we all love photos!

This is FINALLY finished. It's taken me much longer that I had hoped. It does have a great twirl factor. I'm considering doing some kind of embellishment on the bodice - maybe a tiara in rhinestones? What do you think?

Please excuse the floor that is in desparate need of vacuuming, and th hair that is in desparate need of styling.

Any help with this? I am confused on how this fabric with "meet up" if they are different lenghths?!!?!?:confused3

Do you mean the legnth of the tiers? (i.e. teir 1 is 25", tier 2 is 50" etc.) It's the gathering that makes it match up and gives the skirt/dress/top the fullness to twirl. In other words, the 50" tier is gathered to 25" and sewn to tier1. Using the doubling formula the next tier would be 100" and then gathered to 50 inches. Does that make sense?

can anyone help me with this?
I stitch my elastic together with the 'box X' technique.

Overlap the two edges. Sew a box (square, rectangle). Sew an X in the middle of the box. I usually do this in one continuous line of stitching and just stitch one side of the box twice.

If it keeps Airbags tethered, it'll keep elastic together...even with one tough 5-year-old wearing yards of fabric.

HI! I think I can help.

I made this dress for DD and the bottom ruffle is twice as wide as the dress. Once you gather the material up though they are the same length and then you can stitch them together.

Hope this helps answer your question.

Very cute! I love the ruffle at the top of the bodice. I want to try that on my next dress.

Very cute! I love the fabrics on the dress you made. Both your DD's are too cute!

Here's my skirt I just finished.
These are taken with a cell phone camera, so they're not the best.

Here's a pic of it on my desk. Yes, it stands up on its own. :rotfl2:

I used this tutorial
http://www.kukyideas.com/journal/2006/07/tiered-skirt-tutorial.html

and it was very helpful because it has photos. You cut two strips for each tier. Lay them down with right sides together and sew up the sides. Then hem the bottom tier and make a casing on the top tier. Then you have to ruffle tier 3 and tier 2 and sew the tiers together.

These outfits are so cute. I love the sunglasses!

I ruffle tier 3 (by hand which means sewing a basting stitch and pulling the threads) then lay it against the bottom of tier 2 and fuss with it until it is the same width as tier two (this is a pain, imo). Then I pinned the right sides together with the ruffled top of tier 3 matching the bottom of tier two and machine basted before going back around and sewing a regular stitch, THEN I flipped it down and top-stitched for a finished look. Repeat with tier 2 to tier 1. Tier 1 isn't ruffled because it has the elastic.

As I just posted, this tutorial:

was very helpful to me because it has photos.
