The Running Thread --2025

QOTD: It's late in the day, but it can work for tomorrow as well. I am curious how many miles you folks are getting out of your running shoes?

ATTQOTD: I aim for about 350 miles. Same pair or shoes, one made 350 without much issue, the other pair made it to about 310 before I noticed a difference and finally retired them to walking and hiking when I got to 325.

September miles 86.5. Pretty good month for me. Half marathon coming up in about 3 weeks. Hoping to finally get a time under 3 hours again.

ATTQOTD: I don't track the miles. When they don't feel good anymore I get new ones. I usually have 2-3 pairs in rotation so they generally last 8-12 months.

I’ve put a lot of miles on my shoes over the past couple of years (250ish a month at this point) and have found that my middle aged body lets me know if the shoes have “turned”…especially my Achilles. To that end…the general consensus I find is 400 miles on the shoes but the cushy foamy shoes tend to last a lot shorter before they turn. Hoka Bondis went bad on me with he foam breakdown sub 300 miles. More standard trainers like the Brooks Ghost workhorse and Hyperions (and my Clifton 9s so I am not just mean to the Hokas) can go much longer. Ghosts are easily north of 400 miles. IMHo, watch the foam for significant striations on the side as well as obvious wear on the bottom of the shoes (or a new leg/joint/connective pain).

Good shoes, i have found, are critical to keeping my body going.

I track every shoe, every mile, every run. Usually have 3-4 pairs in rotation, long run, daily trainers, speed days. I try to alternate so no pair runs two days in a row and aim for 400 miles. I’ve had a couple go 500 but lately with both Saucony and Mizuno I can feel them wearing out around 350. Over 300 I just use them for shorter runs to save my body a little.

ATTQOTD: I usually retire shoes around 300 miles. I could probably get more out of them, but I usually have a few pairs in rotation, so I’d rather use the newer shoes that feel better.

ATTQOTD:

I aslo have several pairs I rotate through. I do track my mileage but as others have mentioned, my body usually tells me when a shoe is ready to go. Normally that's around the 300 mile mark. For most shoes I've usually consigned them to shorter runs well before the 300 mile mark.

Interestingly - I've had my first shoe "failure" last weekend. I've been doing my long runs in a pair of (race retired) Nike Vaporfly 2s. After my 30k long run Saturday, I noticed the foam on one shoe is starting to split right at the carbon plate (from the back). If I wanted to I'm sure I could pull the whole outsole off below the plate. They only have 260 miles on them - I'd been hoping to get them to around 350. I have a 25km long run this weekend and I think I might be able to get through that - but then I will retire them (and try to see what they look like when I pull them apart)

That’s borderline ask for new ones based on what they are…dude.

I am a very neutral runner so with even wear, I get a bit more miles out of my shoes than most folks.

I have run in Asics Nimbus for the last 9+ years - starting with the Nimbus 17 through the 25. I usually retire them just before or just after 700 miles. The last pair - the Nimbus 25 bothered my heel so I am in the process of converting to the Saucony Ride 17. I have one Nimbus 24 pair left with about 150 miles and the one pair of 25’s which I have not run in for about a year with 100 miles (I am not sure what I am going to do with those). I have 3 pairs of the Rides in rotation with the oldest having 150 miles on them. It should be interesting to see how many miles I get out of them.

I also have 2 pairs of Saucony Endorphin Pro 3’s. The first pair only has about 150 miles and the outsole is pretty worn so I have retired them for long races and I am using them for 5k’s and 10k’s and soon they will move to speed trainers before retiring them for good. The other pair just has a half on them and I plan to use them for my marathon in October and for the Disney marathon in January.

ATTQOTD: I’m usually out around 200 - 250, and a whopping two made it over 300. I’m light, but a forefoot striker running in extreme heat on very rough asphalt: the forefoot outsoles wear smooth on my shoes pretty quickly, while the heels look nearly untouched. And by the time the outsoles are worn completely down, the midsole has lost its oomph, so time to replace. I only buy on sale!

I really should be better about tracking distance on shoes. I have never done this and have just gone by feel. I just use the free map my run and there isn’t a shoe tracker I have seen on there. Just started back running this year so distances have been on the shorter end. 🤞 I will be able to train for all the races on my bucket list so maybe I should properly track it when I purchase my next shoes.
