My Trip to NYC-

I am going to leave out all the drama. (Missing train, DD crying a lot, MIL complaining a lot, sunburnt lips, and really sore feet.) The garment district is so cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My MIL and her sis went to Grease. Hannah and I went to the World of Disney and ribbon shopping. It was a beautiful day and we had a blast. Hannah picked out the Sleeping Beauty gown and managed to get the purse, gloves and cape too. I still do not know how she swung that????

We had two hours to go ribbon shopping. The first shop we went to was called So Good. And it was SO GOOD! OMG!!! OMG!!! OMG!!! I fell in love. I do not have pics but it is a hole in the wall with nothing but fantastic ribbon. (I will take pic of my new ribbon later.) He was so generous with the yardage. He said normally he give a least a yard over. (He may have been flurting with me know that I think about it. :cutie: ) He gave Hannah free yellow velvet ribbon and extra red polka dot ribbon. My total came to $67 and he just said $60. I handed him the cash and we were on our way.

Next we went to Tinsel Town Traders. They have been featured in ME Home Comp mag and Martha. They are vintage fab! I could have spent two hours just in there. We ended up buying only a vintage flower. I am going to make a pink for a sundress out of it. They had fabric that was vintage French gorgeous fabric for $200 a yard!

You could not really take photos but I snuck a flower wall pic.

Next we went to MJ Trims. This was a floor to ceiling warehouse of trim and ribbon. Some of it was great some was really expensive! I actually bought one yard of ribbon for $11. Very cool place. I do not know how I will ever go back to Jo Ann's or gasp Wal Mart!!!:confused3

As we were walking I noticed the Atlas. That is where everyone from Project Runway lives. We took a pic.

Next we went to Mood. That is where everyone on Project Runway shops. Two floors! For NY designer fabric I expected to be more expensive. The cheap stuff was $14 a yard and the average was $30 a yard. Hannah was pretty much spent by Mood so we searched only one floor to find polka dots. It was cool because in Mood I was treated like a designer. Everyone buying fabric were clothing designers. The girl who cut our dots thought my three year old picked a very sheik fabric. Only in NYC can you have a fashionista at three. Since it is designer fabric we only needed half a yard so my total was $5!!! Woo Hoo.

Here is my sneaky picture.

As we were leaving I spotted on little store. We had about five minutes so we ran in and I found the best Epcot ribbon ever. I have to take photos to show everyone.

DROOL! I'm so green with envy! I really want to go to NYC and take an empty suitcase or two now! Glad you had a great time shopping.

UtahMamma! Your report cracked me up! As I was reading I thought surely you will post a pic of you finished project! I guess I will have to wait to see it later! DD loves the full on horizontal twirl skirts!

The one thing that determines if the skirt is twirly enough, is the dizziness factor! If DD doesn't get dizzy enough to almost "throw up" I know that I haven't done it right!:rotfl:

You can get just about anything! My Pfaff has a warning light for when you're about to run out of bobbin thread.

How cool is that! I secretly keep hoping my 100 yr old machine croaks so I have an excuse to get a new one!

On the subject of t-shirt dresses, who's had success a the tank top that holds up to the weight of the skirt? I made DD one she's been wearing all summer. The Walmart tank's stretched to the point it's starting to look like a muscle shirt. It's also starting to get a few holes near the seam. I've promised her I'll remake it and want a tank that will last. Of course, the skirt's got a high twirl factor - the skirt is 20" tall by 3 yards long and all 3 yards is sewn onto a ribbed size 6X tank.

Deb

I would think an Old Navy one would be super durable. I just bought a solid white shirt there and it's so think I don't think it's possible to stretch!

i have learned that it is very hard to sew with 5 kids a dog and a husband who all need mom or a wife. i sew at night while my kids are asleep, but i mess up so bad that i think i seam ripped more than sewing, due to exhaustion . so my hat is off to all those who have created these beautiful outfits.. so here is my idea. be gentle , my next ones will be better..
jayedyndress.jpg

I can totally relate. I WOH full time and most nights I'm dying to get to sewing but by the time everyone's off too bed, I'm too tired to concentrate.

Your dress turned out great! I love how you made the loops in the back!

You'd never be able to afford it!;) :rotfl:

You'd be surprised what I can afford if I get bored or have an itchy "bidder finger" You should see my daughters closet! But I didn't take offense at your joke! I have made Audrey 2 dresses, and trust me...THEY are priceless!!! Someone a while ago was making Wiggles outfits, and they said something like "even if I was offerred 1000.00 bucks, I wouldn't sell!" I totally understood her feelings!

Astro - I haven't thought of that with the tanks and the weight of the skirt/dress. Maybe next time you could use a "lining" the same color as the tank. Or use 2 tank tops in different colors ... you know that is the style now anyways layred they may be tough enough. Sorry, only ideas I have. You may also be able to remove the previous skirt off the tank and use a new tank ? ? ?

Another general question about ruffles. I don't have a ruffling foot. I was wondering how long a ruffle you tend to use on your skirts. I have a twirl skirt I want to add a ruffle to. It is a complete circle, so I know I will need A LOT of material for a ruffle. Does everyone double the measurement or 1 1/2? Can I please get some opinions on this ? :confused3 Thanks a bunch.

-Michelle

Ohhhh.... the dreaded itchy "bidder finger"! My DW has that same problem!

I have threatened amputation if she uses it again! She says go ahead!, I have nine more fingers, and I WILL use all of them!:rotfl:

Heather - LOVE the Simba dress!! Excellent work on the applique and the fabrics are great!

The closeup of nemo, I was so tired by the time I got to his eyes so they're a little wobbly....
IMG_0076.jpg

I love your Nemo!! I have that fabric and have been toying with the idea of a Nemo applique, but I haven't been brave enough to attempt applique yet. You are giving me courage!

Ok, dh got home with the good camera! And here are some good pics of the Nemo skirt... plus my latest creations!

That skirt is fabuous!! I adore orange and blue together and the tulle truely does give it a wavy water effect!! The tee and accessories are perfect too.

Has Anyone Created A Mickey Head 9or Any Other Design) From The Crystal Beads, Like The Bead-dazzler? Was Wondering How That Worked. If Anyone Has Done This Do You Have A Diagram Of How To Evenly Space The Crystals, Also, Do They Come Of In The Wash? Thanks Alot!!!!

Ok, I bought some of this for several reasons (hairbows, rhinestones, etc.) and I'm scared to use it. Reading the package it says to use in "well ventilated" area. Does that mean I should use it outside, is it going to fill my house with toxic fumes? And I think I remember Lisa making a comment about it sticking to your fingers! I'd appreciate any tips and experiences with this stuff!
:thanks:

I put the machine on “speed Racer” and am thrilled at the progress. When my final stitch was stitched, I raised the needle and raised the foot and discovered I was out of bobbin thread about 3 miles ago. Uh Huh!

Ha ha ha I think most of us this is how our sewing goes. I totally ran out of bobbin last night about 2/3 around my 10 mile skirt hem. But, did I notice? Nooooooooooooo

You are too funny! :lmao:

Eeyore's Tiara- I woke up in the middle of the night realizing I hadn't told you how much I love your Nemo dress. Sorry I DID think it, you should have gotten my ESP message that it is ah-maize-ING! I love the ribbon details and sea-plant on the bodice.

Tom- your purple number is so cool too! I think I'll try adding ribbon to some of the patches too. Very good job.

aimee- WOW! I've never been to New York. The ribbon shop alone was FIERCE! I had to fan myself while looking at all your pictures!

Heather- I had to look twice at the bodice fabric...it's leaping zebras! I had thought it was an animal skin print...very cool! LOVE your baby simba! Very cute!

TNmom- Ok, the "good camera" picture is even better. Your Nemo skirt is great! It looks like water! Very Twirly. I really like the orange with the Nemo prints. (mental note, need orange)

Camping Griswalds- ITCHY BIDDING FINGER!!!! :lmao: (I think I have one of those...)

Misty/Spongie- Daizy dog looks so cute in your siggie! LIME bows of course! Tell Jayedyn she looks so grown up and beautiful!

Everyone in General, No One in particular- THANKS! Glad to make you laugh with my tale. I'll have to post a picture when my personal GEEK SQUAD gets home later from work. It isn't that cool, but it was my first full-twirl and I'm happy dd's happy.

Seriously, I wish my machine had an alarm or auto shut off when it runs out of bobbin thread. As if it's the machine's fault I didn't keep checking :rolleyes1

[BThis is INCREDIBLE - -the skirt is -- 3-D!!!!! [/B]

Hey UTAH -- you totally crack me up!! But I AGREE -- would be much better with pics

:thanks:

I have used E6000 for a number of things and never had a problem with the fumes. I have always done them in the house. Maybe that is what is wrong with the kids!:rotfl2: :rotfl2: It can be stringy but I was always able to rub it off pretty easy. I have only used it for sequins for costumes and the ribbon shorts. I use hot glue for hairbows.

Evidently, y’all wear your best smarty pants when sewing. A factoid no one enlightened me on.

Yes, I just Trip Reported my skirt!!!

Thank you for letting me know others have these same problems. I am still working on a dress that the pattern said would take an hour. I started this dress on Monday. I should say I altered the pattern so that might be part of my problem.

Utahmama::love the trip report on the skirt:laughing: sorry about your mishaps.
i was at walmarshey earlier also but i did not see ya in the fabrica dept.

i have cut out the pattern for the mickey romper for ds2 that i am CASE ing(thanks ):cutie:
he is obsessed with the mouse, i will post a picture of how he organized my pins in the tomatoe (let's just say i have a ton of Hidden Mickey's ) i figure that 5-3 =2(there is my math for the day) is alot better than trying to deal with all of my kidlets.
Love the outfits posted today very cute and all the accessories... good night all and happy sewing (remember just keep ripping ) :rotfl:

That is so funny! My DD3 did the same thing. It is funny because I took a pic too. You know we really have them trained. Whenever my DD sees changes she says- Let's put this in the Mickey Mouse jar!

Also, I run out of bobbin thread all the time  :headache: There should be a warning or something!!!!

You can get just about anything! My Pfaff has a warning light for when you're about to run out of bobbin thread. Love it! It also has a built-in needle threader. Love it again!

I've also run out of bobbin thread enough times that if I'm sewing I can HEAR the difference in the sewing machine! How bad is that? :rotfl:

Gymboree has fantastic tanks. I bought a bunch of plain white and green tanks in July for $4.99

Yeah, I can see how busy NOT sewing you've been!! This is GREAT the patterns and colors are wonderful.

This is so fantastic and unique!! I wish I would come up with something original- it'll probably all be C.A.S.E ed.
Hi everyone! Just a quick note before I go to bed.
Thanks for all of the birthday wishes for Ireland, she read them and those she didn't get to see, I will show her another day.
She had a great party, and fell asleep with her new sponge bob under her arm. We are off to Sea World, in their Sea World customs with matching bows...I will take some photos before they get soaked from the big fishy...:lmao: Enjoy your sewing time everyone... I can't wait to get back to my projects...I'm so jealous....

Only in this sick and twisted thread would a person rather be sewing than at SEAWORLD!!!! You have deeply disturbing issues woman!

UTAHMAMA: Hello, pictures? Yeah, my hubby does all my web stuff too:rotfl: I'm here to tell ya you are NOT the first one to sew for 20 minutes w/ no bobbin. I hate those little things. On my MIL's machine the bobbin holds like 2x's what my moms or mine does so I stop checking and then BAM- no bobbin.

Okay. My sister is 2 CM's dialated and 50% effaced AND having regular contractions. I haven't worked on her afghan in 2 weeks out of shear annoyance. So, I'd better get crackin' I'm only about half way done.

I am going to my workshop (otherwise known as my inlaw's) and take all of my fabric and figure out what I am going to do for each outfit. I am still deathly afraid of apliqueing so you may not see any of that. My goal is to have 1 completed project for you all by monday-I'll keep you posted

...t.
