June 8, 2011 – Mediterranean

LOL....phew and ...awwwwwww. Part of me would have been excited if it were closer to our date. hahahaha

On another note, we're looking at romeinlimo for the 3 Italian port excursions. Anybody else looking at them?

pxlbarrel -

You had asked about romeinlimo. We have booked with them for all three ports in Italy, based on reviews on disboards and tripadvisor. Haven't used them before, but hoping they will be good based on info from reviews!

Hello fellow cruisers:wave2: We are officially booked for this cruise! Not our first on Disney but 1st to the Med! It will be myself (Alma) and my DD (14).

We are definitely interested in private excursions especially for Rome and Villefranche (still researching the other ports) it would be fun to join with another family/families and split the cost.
Next on my list-- booking airline tickets:scared1:

Alma,

I'm glad to see you will have your DD14 with you, as I will have my DD13 with me, and she's hoping there will be girls her age to hang out with. (My mom will also be with us.) Like you, this is not our first Disney cruise, but it is our first to the Med!

Glad to have you aboard!

I am not that familiar with Naples as what to see or do but where is everyone planning on going?

I thought I'd post this in case others are in the same situation. I noticed my brother's passport expires September 2011. I told him to contact DCL to see if he needed to renew his passport before we went on the cruise.

This was DCL's response:

"Passports must be valid at least 6 months after the sailing has ended."

So ... he'll have to renew his passport. Mine doesn't expire until 2012 so I'm good. :thumbsup2

Though I'm aware of the passports must be valid at least 6 months, last time we used ours was this past July when we cruised to Mexico and i know 1 of ours is about to expire. My son's passport is expiring in Aug '11, so Thank you for posting , this serves as a reminder for me to renew his passport but i'll probably do it after the holidays.

Hi Chris,
We are so excited to be on this cruise! On our last cruise my daughter was able to chat by exchanging emails with other girls her age prior to the cruise. It turned out really well because when they finally met in person it was like they knew each other. One of the things my daughter enjoys the most is meeting new friends, she still keeps in touch with a few girls from past cruises.

I would love to see the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii. Still doing some research and checking out cruise critic for the best company for a shore excursion tour like this. If anyone is interested in this type of itinerary I can look into getting a van for a small group of 7 or 8?

I was at the dentist and after my cleaning the hygienist pulled up the calendar to make my next appointment. She asked "How's June 9th". I replied "Nuh-uh. Not gonna work. I'll be on the Magic in cruising the Mediterranean June 9th". For some reason it made me really excited... it's the little things.

Have you checked http://italycruisetours.com ?

My mother "Rose-MarieWilson" and two nieces (teens) will be on this sailing and are looking to join a private tour of about 10 - 15 total (to reduce costs). I also plan to research the Cruise Critic boards for them to see what experiences those folks have have with private cuise tours of Italy.

Received this e-mail quote below from RomeInLimo. Compare this to the Italy Cruise Tours (ICT) information in my earlier post...

The currency conversion I used from Euro to Dollars was the interbank rate +- 3% typical credit card rate from (http://www.oanda.com)

[My additions] are in the [square brackes], trying to make sense of the currency conversion and do the math for you.

I guess we're ok with the quote, hopefully we can do the tour with 15 people so it's cheaper since we still have to buy tickets (we are party of 3). Our main concern is to make sure we get to go inside the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and get to climb the tower in Pisa.

Looks like we are looking at the same company :thumbsup2 RomeinLimo has great reviews from customers from both cruisecritic and trip advisor. For this reason I also contacted them regarding a shore excursion in Naples. The tour is about 9 hours which includes Pompeii, and a drive to the Amalfi Coast with stops in Sorrento and Positano. I was quoted a rate of 600 Euros for up to 8 people. If we get 8 people that’s 75 Euros per person (does not include admission to Pompeii or gratuity). This seems less per person than for a bigger group of 10-12 you were quoted--- Am I missing something:confused3

<sigh> Exactly 1 year ago, we were preparing to drive to Port Canaveral for our cruise on the Magic. <double sigh>

Ok...so I'm gonna take a look at those tour quotes and figure out if they fit into our plans. LOL I'm very interested in Pompeii and my brother is interested in the Vatican so if the 3 tours satisfy those two needs, we'd be happy.

By the way, we're a family of 4 ummm... older adults (my mom, dad, brother and myself)

The 80 Euro PP is a much better deal than the quote I received. We need to sharpen our pencils and really look hard at what these tour operators are including and not including, so they may be compared accurately.

Another operator, RomeTravels sent me this today:

Dear Genie,

Good morning from Rome and thank you, thank you very much for your e-mail and lovely Skype message. I apologize for not getting back to you sooner but we had an incentive program with several people the last few days and it's just over. Ready to reply and help you step-by-step.

First, thanks for contacting us regarding your cruise excursions to Italy. And I am glad to tell you that, since you contacted at least 3 months ahead (your shore tours are scheduled for June), we may give you the 15% off on the total of the three shore excursions: from Naples, from La Spezia and of course Rome ( approximated to the decimals in each excursion of course! )
I took good note that your party can be of minimum of 10 and max 15 people travelling.

I have personally recently done an identical program and providing the same tours and land services ( in Naples, Rome & La Spezia) with 24 people from Utah coming on a Disney Cruise.

Important: especially because you will be traveling with children/kids (I assume), one of the main things will be our flexibility. I mean, if some of your children will get tired somewhere, we will adjust and slight change according to their needs.

Now below are the cost and what is included, calculated on minimum 10 full paying guests in each excursion:

1) Sunday: June 12, 2011 - Naples, Italy 9:00 AM 9:00 PM

Your guide & driver/minibus will be right at the pier where the Disney Magic will dock with a name on. You will then go straight to Pompeii (about 30 minutes drive) and then start your tour (about 3 hours). After that, light lunch right outside Pompeii excavations. After lunch, you will then go to visit Herculaneum for about 2 hours. At he end, a great tour with some walk too (being flexible) of the highlights of Naples from Posillipo enjoying the best view of the Naples Bay.

Back to the ship on time, not later that 18:00 (for your dinner on board).

Cost: EUR 220.00 per person less 15% for booking 3 shore excursions at least 3 months ahead= 190.00 EUR per person.

Not included:
- lunch with the Pizza ( with a supplement of 25.00 EUR per person );
- gratuities to the driver (appx. 50.00 EUR total) and the guide (about 100.00 EUR total);

If you want to go back to the ship later than 18:00 (our contract with the local guide/driver/bus is for 10 hours), please foresee a double tip for both.

Also included:
- entrance fees to Pompeii & Herculaneum.

2) Monday: June 13, 2011 - Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy 7:45 AM 9:00 PM

Your private driver/bus will be at the pier at 07:45 am with a sigh showing your name on, pick you up and transfer to Rome (the ride lasts appx. 1,5 hour). Here I will have the pleasure and the honor to meet you and guide you for the day.

We will see the Vatican highlights with the Sistine Chapel & St. Peter's Basilica in the morning. After a quick lunch, onto a panoramic tour including: Circus Maximus, Venice Square, Capitol Hill, Roman and Imperial Forums, Caesars' Palaces (Palatine Hill) and the Aventine Hill, + visit of the Coliseum and the Trevi Fountain.

Cost: EUR 250.00 per person less 15% for booking 3 shore excursions at least 3 months ahead= 210.00 EUR per person.

Also included:
- entrance fees to the Vatican & the Coliseum with no lines + the rental of the head-sets (being mandatory at the Vatican: transmitter with the microphone and you guys have the receiver).

Not included:
- lunch ( with a supplement of 35.00 EUR per person with a menu or lunch à-la-carte but it takes a bit more to eat than a lunch menu if you have individual orders of course);
- gratuities to the driver (appx. 50.00 EUR total) and the guide, myself (it's up to you if I will be doing a great job Bruce! );

At the end of the day, when you will be back to the port (Civitavecchia) with the bus/driver, I will be going to the train station to catch the train going to La Spezia in order to meet you there the morning after.

3. Tuesday: June 14, 2011 - La Spezia (Florence/Pisa), Italy 7:30 AM 7:00 PM
Myself and driver/bus at the port of La Spezia. Go to Florence (appx. 1,5 hour drive). Meet our local guide and be with her for an half day, introducing the highlights of Florence: Ponte Vecchio, Piazza della Signorìa with the copy of the Michelangelo's David, Via Calzaiuoli, etc.. She will be ending her guidance service at lunch time.

After lunch, onto Pisa (ride lasts about 1 hour a bit more) to spend some time to the Miracles Square to see from outside: Duomo, Baptistery and of course the Leaning Tower. Free time there for pictures. Of course I will introduce you Pisa on the way to Pisa from Florence and once there, we will go together to see these places.

Around 17:00, you will have the ride back from Pisa to La Spezia (about 1 hour drive) with the driver/minibus. I will be catching a train going back to Rome

Cost: EUR 225.00 per person less 15% for booking 3 shore excursions at least 3 months ahead= 190.00 EUR per person.

Not included:
- lunch ( with a supplement of 35.00 EUR per person with a menu or lunch à-la-carte but it takes a bit more to eat than a lunch menu if you have individual orders of course);
- gratuities to the driver (appx. 50.00 EUR total) and the local guide of Florence (about 50.00 EUR) & myself (it's up to you if I will be doing a great job Bruce! ).

The total per person for the three excursions, with lunch and gratuities not included as outlined above, already calculated with the 15% off the original price, is EUR 590.00 per person.

Note: above costs do not include the 20% VAT of any payment with cc or bank wire. If you mean to confirm and you want to save some money by skipping most of the 20% VAT, once you pay us a deposit ( of 90.00 EUR per person + 20% VAT = 108.00 EUR per person ), you may pay to me in cash on the second day while we meet in Rome the balance: EUR 500.00 per person x the total persons who will be travelling (from 10 to 15).

After all this long e-mail, I will be more than glad to call you if you need any help of clarifications. Anyway, I will be more than glad to speak to you in person on the next week.

Let me know your thoughts. My very best regards and I wish you a good week end.

Respectfully,

Cristiano Pellegrini

Thanks for posting that itinerary. It looks promising.

Just curious but which dinner seating are most of the people looking for excursions on? We have the late seating ... I picked it purposely so we didn't have to be back to the ship by 5 or 6....

We are on late seating as well. From our past cruises, it is better this way so we don't have to rush back to the ship and after a long day of excursion, we can still rest before getting ready for dinner.

We are currently booked on the early seating but I am a bit worried that we will never make it back to the ship. When we had the late seating on our last cruise, we couldn't enjoy the late-night buffets since we were still so stuffed from dinner. I didn't want that to happen again!!!!:rotfl::rotfl:
