June 8, 2011 – Mediterranean

Zoom,

Our flight is not until June 5, arriving on June 6, so we won't see you at the airport. :(

But I called DCL, and the lady said our flight info shows up correctly on her screen and not to worry. She is going to report it to their web people to get it fixed.

She also confirmed that I need to bring with me on the cruise the same credit card I've submitted at on-line check-in. I thought that was the case, but I asked to make sure.

Where are you guys staying in Barcelona?

I was wondering if anyone had any advice for travel post cruise to DLP? Is it far? Is it doable? I hate being so close and yet so far. If there is an economical way that avoids the airport, I would love to try to go for a day or two. We'll have until the 21st when we fly out of Barcelona.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Our family is planning to head off to Paris after the cruise via the overnight sleeper train (called Elipsos). We're buying multi-day train passes, but I believe you can reserve this train on your own for about $200 per person -- Which includes a bed, so no hotel cost for the night. Travel time is about 12 hours. Train leaves Barcelona at 9pm and pulls into the Paris City Center at 9am the next morning. (Go to: www.raileurope.com for more info.)

Good luck with your planning and welcome aboard!

DH and I discussed the excursions yesterday, and we ended up booking Malta and Palermo thru DCL, originally I wanted to do this on our own but DH insists to book this thru DCL, he likes the convenience, aren't all guys like that? lol... he didn't want to go thru the hassle of looking for bus, train stations or cabs...:confused3. We are also doing a private tours in Naples,La Spezia and Civitavecchia with Ssisk.

Which DCL excursions did you guys book? We booked Blue Grotto and Fishing Village in Malta (9:00am-1pm) and Mysterious Palermo.

I almost booked Mysterious Palermo but I didn't think my mom would like the mummies. LOL and I was right. We chose ... ummm... I can't remember... :rotfl2: One that takes us to a market and then a church (ha...the church doesn't help ... every excursion on this cruise takes you to a church!) For Malta we took the highlights tour (I think)... my mind is mush right now ... I'll have to go back into the reservations to find what I actually booked.

Zoom,

We are probably staying at Hotel Jazz, but we have reservations at the Renaissance too. I'm able to get a much better rate at the latter, but I think we'd rather be closer to Las Ramblas, etc. so mom would be able to get back to hotel easier if she gets tired.

What about your family?

We also booked the Blue Grotto & Fishing Village with DCL. You're on that one, too, right? I kind of wanted to do the catacombs in Palermo, but my daughter and I have already seen the famous mummy museum in Guanajuato, Mexico, so she doesn't seem interested in that. She keeps asking if there will be anything to see on this trip that's not "historical" . . . uh, let's see . . . there'll be lots of stuff on the ship that's not "old"!! Ha!

We plan on visiting the Capuchin Catacombs on our own, I think it will be quite interesting and a first for us to see mummies up close! This definitely is not for the fainthearted or small children. We plan on getting there by public transportation, which in itself can be an adventure.

With DCL we will do Corsica - Calanches, Palermo - Selinunte and Erice, Naples - Amalfi Drive and Sorrento family excursion.

Rome/Florence/Malta/Villefranche we will do on our own. We did Rome and Villefranche on our own in 2007.

We are going to DLP before the cruise. It's a short / cheap flight. We are paying like 29 Euro one way through Easy Jet. We looked into taking a train but it's well over 12 hours and way expensive.

Wow, I would not have thought you could get a flight so cheap, that is doable. Thanks!

And thank you too, Jeff, the overnight rail option would allow us to see Barcelona during the day, then sleep on the train overnight and wake up ready for DLP! Super cool. So many options, so little time and money! :cool1:

True - We have to pay 11 Euro per checked bag. We will have 3 bags that we can carry on to US Airways from the States but will have to check with Easy Jet. Fortunately my parents are meeting us in Barcelona before the cruise and have agreed to bring our big suitcase so that we don't have to haul it around Europe during the first leg of our trip! ;)

HA! I know why you don't remember what you booked.... DCL's website was down the time we are all ready to book and you had to stay up late :surfweb:, you were probably half asleep when you book your excursions...:rolleyes1 LOL!
For the Mysterious Palermo excursion, I'm not sure if me and my son will like the catacombs part of the tour but I figure if we don't like it then we'll just go outside and wait, I know my DH would love to see this.

For Barcelona, we are booked at U232 Hotel. I would love to stay at Hotel Jazz, it's just that its so expensive but I check once in awhile, if it goes down then i'll cancel U232. Royal Ramblas looks nice too!

Yes we also booked the Blue Grotto & Fishing Village with DCL. Hope we can be on the same boat. Before we book this cruise, DH talked to our son (11 y/o) and told him that the ports/excursions we're doing requires a lot of walking, he can be a little impatient sometimes, but he's really excited to see Europe in general.

hahahaha, you're so right. LOL

You guys are making me second guess not seeing the mummies. ROFL

We're late seating btw and we'll be staying at the AC Diplomatic the night before the cruise (unless I find other accomodation). We'll be flying into Barcelona with British Airways from London City Airport on the 7th. Our cabins are on the 7th deck (big port hole) right now but we're kind of hoping to be upgraded to a veranda. :thumbsup2

Hi ZOOM! I just wanted to add my husband's name to the roll call, Robert, and also add that we have late dinner seating. I'm not sure what our room is yet, and I think we do want to do the FE. I just want to make sure the "gifts" we bring are appropriate or compatible or whatever, so I'd love some ideas. And do we give one gift per person in the room or just one for the family. I know that sounds silly, but I wouldn't want to be a lame Disney gift giver. :sad2:

More excited with every day!

Wow thanks for the heads up, I just checked out the link, they're very specific. Too bad we can't borrow Amyren's parents. :) If the price is right and we can work out the details, it very well may be worth the extra hassle. I'm just glad to know ahead of time, I don't like surprises that come with a price tag attached.

Hi Michelle, For the FE, It is totally up to you if you want to give one per family or for every member of the family. If you do a search on the main forum, I'm sure you'll see a few threads regarding FE. I will add you to the FE list as well.
