I'm a little peeved.

Maybe the insensitive clod delivery was intentional -- he may have indeed been trying to shame your kid out of a concern he was smoking and he was genuinely concerned for your son? I know, I know, it wasn't maybe the best approach, but consider maybe it was coming from a good, although clueless, perspective.

1. the kid with smoking parents should tell his parents that their smoke makes all his stuff smell and I think that's child abuse.

2. Any teacher who attempts to discourage their students from smoking is ok by me.

I agree. A freshman can't speak? I know mine would. Sometimes she just doesn't stop.

LOL, mine too! I think OP's ds handled it just fine. I know if that was my dd, she would die of embarrassment if I called the teacher or school about it. There has actually been a time or 2 since middle school that I was going to call and she convinced me to allow her to handle it herself:thumbsup2

I am also thinking about how this may have come about. The teacher probably came up behind Cam and was hit with the smell of smoke so he just asked him if he or his parents smoked without really thinking, yk? I doubt he was trying to embarrass the kid.

I think that...of all the other perspectives, I agree with yours the most.

If person A decides to smoke, great. But they affect all the people around them. And now A's choice is actually affecting the classroom of A's child. A probably has no clue, and A's child might not always be aware because they live with it...so why NOT say something about it?

This isn't a hygeine problem, it's not a *personal* thing. People who smoke or live with those who smoke have a cloud of smell around them, no matter what. And if no one makes sure the smokers know this, how CAN they know it?

So glad my mom quit when I was 10...dad quit when he had a heart attack 10 years ago...the stepmom, who is a nurse in the NICU and should know better, still smokes, and continues to live under the assumption that just b/c she holds her cigarettes outside the window, she doesn't smell like them and it's not bothering other people. My half-sibs don't notice, they don't even care anymore. My oldest half-brother has started to smoke, just like his mom, and she realizes she can't say anything to him about it...it's just sad.

So, and I"m not usually on the side of teachers, I'm with the teacher on this one.

Maybe the teacher's delivery wasn't very good, but I think his intentions were. If your son was in college (or over 18), then the teacher chould have kept his mouth shut. Since your ds is 14, I think it is acceptable and shows concern for an unhealthy, and at that age, illegal, habit.

To call someone out for "smoking" in front of a whole class is just wrong. You're supposed to pull the student aside, I thought all teachers knew that...

that's terrible, i'm sorry he singled out your son!!

sometimes i think teachers get on this power trip and think they can say whatever they want to students.

when i was in high school i had this teacher who accused me of drinking and doing drugs because of the "way that i dressed" and because my "hair changed every month" and i was the most straight edge kid you could meet.

my mother got upset, called the BOE, but who would you believe? a nice old Christian woman teaching English, or the student who wears a lot of black and has wild hair colors?

One teacher is a jerk and all teachers are on power trips. Get over it.

Why does EVERYTHING have to be an issue. For crying out loud, the teacher made a comment. We don't even know exactly how the comment was stated. Maybe the teacher was discrete and it SEEMED like he yelled it out to the class.

I REALLY feel sorry for the kids have have parents that will "REPORT THE TEACHER" for every little thing. Do you really think that it helps your child to get involved in non-issues like these? When do your children learn to stand up for themselves? Are you going to go running to the president of your child's company when his boss says something mean to your snowflake? Also, WHY does everyone automatically assume the teacher is in the wrong. Kid lie (not that the OP's son is lying but in other cases), get over it.

Then, next week there will be a parent at school ranting and raving about how the school didn't let them know they suspected their son was smoking.

All you "report it" people, spend a week in the schools and your view will change dramatically on your opinion of what REALLY goes on in the schools and you will feel pretty foolish over some of the comments you have made here.

Not a big deal. You shouuld be thankful the teacher cared enough to say something.

I agree 100%. No matter what a teacher does it seems like people will complain. No wonder why teacher's jobs are so tough. Not only do they have to deal with students, they have to deal with every parent too.

People wouldn't dare spend a week in the schools because they already have their view on teachers and nothing will change that. They have no experience teaching but will not waste 1 second telling them how to do their job.
