If your looking to adopt a pet please look at www.petfinder.com//index.html

Petfinder helped us find Lucy, our adorable Miniature Schnauzer. She was returned to the shelter 2x before being pulled by a rescue. She was dumped at the shelter by her original owner, whom we assume bought her from a breeder.

Petfinder is the only way we'll add animals to our home again!

Thanks for this thread Debbie. I love seeing all the adopted animals. Keep the rescue stories coming people!:dogdance: :cat:

I didn't use petfinder but I did rescue my two basenji's from a breed specific rescue group.

Those poor babies had been in the shelter for so long and were so starved for love it nearly broke my heart.

Maybe I'm a "snob" but I like certain breeds and want them in particular so I choose to go through the breed rescues.

It's kinda sad when I think I'll never have another puppy again (although I won't miss the work!;) ) but it also warms my heart to know that someday I'll be able to give another dog a much needed home!

This is such a great thread, I love Petfinder. I always tell everyone about it, because alot of people never have heard of it. Here is one of my favorite rescues which does long distance adoptions. Even doing long distance if they have someone in your particular area they will do a home visit and of course vet reference. We adopted our King Charles Spaniel from them, she was rescued from a puppy mill in Arkansas. October will be her 1 year anniversary with us  . They do alot of Puppy Mill Rescues which is why I Love and Admire what they do. Here is the link.

Oh what a beautiful furbaby you have!!He's sooo lucky to have you too! It's so wonderful of you to save that beautiful furbaby.
The link you provided is great! Thank you.I'm in love with Molly but I don't think my 5 cats would appreciate a dog since none of them were brought up with our canine friends.I can see the hissin, spittin and big, puffy tails now!
Anyway congrats on your life long friend.

Thanks for jumping in and letting us know of your two furbabies that you rescued! A homeless animal is a homeless animal.Wether it's from your local shelter or a breed specific group they all need loving homes. And I'm glad you opened you home and your heart to those love starved furbabies.
I am so happy to read all the wonderful rescue/adoption stories.
They bring sooo much happiness to our lives.

I got my "girls" from Petfinder too! It's a great site.

Shameless Plug: If you have a PetSmart in your area, they also offer Pet Adoption days where homeless pets from local shelters are brought to the stores for adoption. Last weekend our store placed 57 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens in new homes!!

They are great for finding a new pet however, just as a caution, for those of you who need to find a home for a pet, you will get a lot of wacko replies from Petfinder.com.

I posted my sister's dog on there and had to cancel the posting after one day because every who replied wanted me to ship them the dog. They all were sleezballs trying to scam me. Just just be careful.

Yes that is right! I go to my local Petsmart every Saturday to see the pets up for adoption.I'm glad you jumped in to let everyone know!I just didn't even think of mentioning that.Petsmart does offer adoption days (ours is Saturday)
and they have a van full of cats/kittens and dogs/puppies.
57 homeless animals found a home!Yay!I am sooo thrilled for those furbabies!
Thank you for jumping in and letting people know about the Petsmart Adoption Clinics!!

Unfortunately there are always wackos around to answer any kind of ad.Even for pets.Like the above poster states just be careful and weed out the people that don't sound right. And always charge an adoption fee.I would even go as far as asking for a reference before I handed a pet over to anybody I did not know.

I just started working there part time last week, and I chose it partly because I admire their efforts for homeless pets. It's why I shop there, so why not work there? If you already have pets, every time you make a purchase, you can donate to pet charities that provide adoption, spaying and neutering services. We have donation boxes at every register and you can add it to your charge or debit.

We do have some live in kitties that are with us all week, but all of our adoptable dogs come in on the weekends and we usually get more kitties too. Last weekend we had adoption on Saturday and Sunday, but it isn't always both days.

I agree and that's why I posted a warning for those who may want to use Petfinder to find a home for a pet they have.

I did ask for an adoption fee and for the potential adoption family to agree to fill out an adoption application with references etc... and a contract promising to return her to me if they cannot keep her and not give her away or put her in a shelter.

It didn't stop the wackos from trying though. We did Craigslist (with a link to her Myspace page), a Myspace page, animal control website, Boston Rescue website and Petfinder and we got so many wackos from Petfinder that I took it down after one day. I did get a couple of wackos from Craigslist but untimitely found her a family that way.

We found our dog's rescue group through Petfinder 5 years ago and last year we used it to help my Dad find a senior dog. We both have lab mixes that are wonderful dogs.

My children were 5 and 7 when we adopted our dog. The volunteer who worked with us from our rescue group would only let us see dogs that had passed a specific temperment test and had the right personality for am active house. I too was surprised by the amount of info on our application but I now understand why.....placing a dog in the wrong type of situation is bad for everyone. My dog was 7 months old at the time and he thrives on an active lifestyle of kids, visitors, etc. My dad is widowed and adopted an older dog whose owner had passed away. She is a great dog but she would not do well in my busy household.

Many of the rescue groups here in Boston work with volunteers in other states to bring up dogs from high kill areas. Our dog came from WV and my dads from AL. They seem to have a high success rate of being adopted in this area.

It requires some patience with applications, etc. but it is so worth it!

I loooove Petfinder! In fact, Mom just adopted a new sweetie that she found on there last week. She was on her "last day" at the shelter. Here's Shadow on her way home from the shelter, she's a Bloodhound/Lab mix. :cool1:

I don't think I'll be allowed. I live in a condo complex so I have no backyard and the dog would be left alone during the work day (except when I come home at lunch and walk it). I want a dog so badly though!

Well, you could do what my friends did. They adopted a Yorkie-Poo and litter trained him! He's the cutest thing EVER. Because he's so small, the size of their apartment isn't really a big issue, it's plenty of space for him to get exercise beyond the daily walks.

I'm a HUGE believer in people having pets. I don't evangelize about my religion but don't get me going on animals because I'll evangelize about that until I talk your ear off!!
