I am glad I sold some of my points.

I used to have as many as 550 points. I now have 340 points. I think, at least for me, this was a good decision.

I did not sell the points because I needed the money or because I think DVC is going to hell in a handbasket.

I sold them because I was feeling that I had to arrange to use points for every vacation that went on. I first realized that it was a problem when DVC dropped some of my favorite Concierge entries. (The Grand Hotel, the Plaza and the American Club). I realized it again when I preferred to go on a cruise that was adults only.

Many of you have been smarter than me all along. You have realized that DVC should be a PART of a person's vacation planning. It should not restrict your planning, nor should it make your planning harder.

It should never make you feel that you have to use up your points nor that you have to go to somewhere that is OK rather than the place you really want to go to. :thumbsup2

We have taken a similar approach. We never used points for non DVC options but we did own as many as 885. By selling down to 330 and adding back 100 (4*25) at AKV, we are better set. I had intended to sell the 330 BWV points but the combo of economy and other additions at DVC have caused me to rethink this though I likely will still get down to 100 at some point. We have other timeshare interests which we use mostly and even for DVC stays, most of our stays are through exchanges. We find ourselves renting out our owned points much of the time even now.

So, you CAN have too many points!;) I have 180 and wish I could afford more. It is comforting to know that you can sell contracts and get a pretty fair price for them if you choose to do so.

I know your kidding, but the question is still a fair one. It depends on your focus and how you use them. Some might not have enough at 1000 and another might have too many at 150. IMO, many people that have a lot of points would be FAR better off in a number of ways diversifying themselves into other systems instead of relying on DVC only but it's certainly their decision to make.

I love having only a 100 point contract.

Sure I would love to have many more points, but know that for the long haul that this is excellent.

We may buy more points later if we ever need more than studios, but I can't imagine ever pulling the trigger for more than 300 points.

We had 500 and now have 325. We still hope to get rid of at least 50 more. Then in a few years, we'll sell them all.

Glad it worked out for you. DVC is a "tool" for great vacations. It's never made vacation planning "harder or easier for my family but we only have 200 points so using them up is not very hard.
It was definitely time for you to sell if you really felt that you were "settling" for some place you really did not want to be.

Not sure I'm that much smarter than anyone, Change is an unavoidable part of life, Next year my vacation preferences have changed (I've been a bit disillusioned with so many cutbacks at teh world) so I'm renting out my points and heading over to gay Paris for vacation.

After that who knows :confused3 I'll always probably be a little in love with wdw but there may come a time when I too will want to sell.

I am trying to read this thread with my head and not my heart. We currently have too many points (1150) because circumstances make it hard for us to travel. We are hoping that things get better but our ages (62 and 76) mean that health stuff could enter into the equation at any time. This year I was forced to rent out some of our points. I was lucky to find 2 wonderful families as customers. Somehow I felt guilty doing this. It was never in my plans to rent out points when we bought the points. It seems that it would make a lot of sense for us to sell some points but how do I get past the sick feeling I have when I seriously consider this? Maybe if we had a couple of 50 point contracts but ours are mostly 100 and 150 points. Did any of you who have sold some points go through this emotional issue or am I the only one so addicted to the Disney kool-aid?

A little. We sold all of our OKW points and OKW is still our first love and our favorite in many ways.

We added on with VGC and BLT this year. The original plan was to sell some of the points to cover the new points. :lmao: The most logical points to sell would be the BCV points, but I can't seem to let go. One reason is the resale prices are down--no idea if they will rebound. Another is we have a ressie for NYE which I don't want to cancel. Finally, we are planning to go again in APR 2011 and I need a bunch of BCV points!

The other contract we thought of selling was the SSR points. We originally bought mainly to cover trips to DL (but now we have VGC). Again, the resale market has gone down-not a good time to sell. But, it also turns out the SSR points have really come in handy when we book at T-7 months and all points become equal. If all that is available is SSR--no big deal, they are SSR points anyway. :confused3

One thing we did was to buy the new contracts in smaller increments. I wish I had done that with BCV because I would still like to have some BCV points... we love to stay there for NYE and it would most likely be impossible to stay without BCV points.

So far, we haven't really had to pay for MF for the new points--so it hasn't been that noticeable to carry the extra points. Next year, when the full year of MFs on all our points kicks in, I may change my tune. :)

That's a good way to look at it. This is the first time I've even been considering that there might be a time at which I might want to sell some points. Right now I'm borrowed up the wazoo but am thinking no Disney trips next year until September or October if they don't have Star Wars Weekends in May (big move for me). If a lot of upcoming years are going to be like that and I don't get into using them for cruises or Disneyland it'll be time to dump one of my Beach Club contracts.

Has taken a year for the absence of the Adventurers Club to catch up with me but next year I think it will.

We bought into SSR with 150 points. We are thinking about adding a small contract in the future (25 or 50).

Our reasons for holding off are that I want to get the 150 paid off before buying more. We have done pretty good with 150, but have begun borrowing as we like having the 1 Bedroom.

Second - with our DD5 just starting Kindergarten, it has not been a problem to travel when we want. But we know in the next few years taking her out of school will become difficult. So - we will either need a few more points to go during the higher point times.

Third - we may do more things seperately. My wife is a runner and already went down for the 1/2 Marathon last March. So - a few more points would help us to stretch them out. I would like to go on a little golfing trip sometime too.

Finally - we never wanted to get too many points, as we like to go other places for vacation, so we can always bank (even though we currently borrow) and go every other year.

I think getting to 200 would do us fine, but with the economy and our changing vacation planning - we will need to think this through before buying more.

:grouphug:

We're still aquiring, but I'm 62, and we bought when we were both in our 50's and I figured at that time if we had 10 -15 years of DVC it will have been worth it. It's hard for me to realize that we've owned for 6 years so far. They've been amazing years. Our family has expanded, but DM and some others who have shared our points can no longer come with us. I will be sad when we begin to divest our DVC, there's no question of that in my mind. These years, these points, going to WDW has been a great experience for us.

We have 200 points and originally thought that we wanted to add on more at BWV and VGC. We decided that our SSR 200 points are just fine and we don't need the 11 month window for BWV for anything. If I'm able to book my birthday and anniversary weekends at VGC at 7 months, then we'll stay at 200 points.

We have 200 BCV points, and really it has been enough, and we booked 2BR rooms most of the time (4 kids). They are older now, ages 17-23. The older ones are done with Disney for now.

We may move out west, and if we do, maybe we will sell and get GC points, or better yet, wait and see if they make a DVC at the Disneyland Hotel.

I could go to Disney over and over, and I DO. But I also enjoy other travel, like a recent trip to Wash DC, and to Chicago for example. There is a great big world out there to see.

We have a family of 6. The 200 points we have now are working fine so far. However, the time of year that we travel and the unit size will have to become more fluid in the coming years. Already, my oldest DS(14) does not travel with us because we always go about the time basketball practice begins (fall break, kids only miss 3 days of school). I think that 250-275 points would allow us to be flexible enough to get the family there as a whole. I think that DW and I could use those points efficiently down the road.

We have 315 points (150 BWV and 165 AKV), which is about right for our WDW travel. However, DM and DSF have discovered the wonders of "Central Florida Golf Vacations", particularly with the great DVC golf membership discount, and want to come along or use the points regularly. (DM is on our membership for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the DVC golf card.) The original plan was that they would join us every other trip, but now they are asking to use points to take some friends golfing!

We have a 4.5 year old and we're currently waiting to adopt, so we'll have children who (hopefully) love to go to WDW for many years. Plus, considering how often I went before we had children, I'm not worried that our DVC points will ever go to waste.

I think we'll end up needing enough points for about two 6 or 7 day trips in a two bedroom a year, which is a few more than we'd originally intended. We really do enjoy other forms of vacation, particularly relaxing in Hawaii and cruising, so we don't want to be so locked into Disney that we don't have the time to go elsewhere. We're likely to eventually get a Hawaii timeshare; we're currently waiting to see what DVC Hawaii turns out to look like before we decide between getting it or buying HGVC or Marriott.

We certainly can imagine having too many points (more than 500 just doesn't make sense), but at the moment, we're still acquiring.

We are in our 50s and have 300 points. It is more than enough for a nice trip in a 2BR with family some years, a 1BR at HHI or VB for just the two us, or a studio for a short stay to get out of PA during the winter. Having more points would stress me out because we do like to go other places as much as we love our DVC trips. Good luck and good health to both of you-I hope you have a vacation in the works to look forward to. :)
