Fell off the ride?

An ex-coworker of mine JUMPED off Splash Mountain a few years ago. Going up the last hill before the big drop, he became convinced he wouldn't survive it, saw the steps over to the right, stood up and jumped over!!! The ride immediately stopped and someone came on a loudspeaker and told him not to move in a very stern voice. He was escorted out while his mortified wife and son had to wait on the ride for like 20 minutes for it to get started again.

OT, but same trip, he also had a piece of firework land in his eye during Illuminations. Needless to say, Disney is not a favorite destination of his!

Jumping out of the logs on Splash happens on an almost daily basis.

I just hope that if anyone does fall out (whether it be accidental or out of fear, like most people on Splash) that they're safe. Getting seriously injured isn't all that magical.

If Kingdom Keepers is right, The current gets stronger as you progress leading up to the drop.
It is not.

PS: I know the guy who was the inspiration for the character of Wayne the Imagineer in "Kingdom Keepers". His name is also Wayne, and works (ironically) at Splash Mountain -- Ridley Pearson thanks him in the book's acknowledgements.

Hey Buzz! Fancy meeting you here.

Wayne. I miss that guy SO much. If it wasn't for him (and the other regular CMs at Splash - I'm sure you know who they are), I really think the poor CPs would have went insane. Not that we already weren't...

Anyway. Splash is really scary, folks. I didn't know it was THAT dangerous until I trained there. To be honest, it sort of freaked me out. Especially the reservior. I avoided that thing at ALL costs.

As far as deaths on Splash - it's so unfortunate. Any injury is unfortunate on WDW property, really. But, some people DO get scared and jump out. The intrusion system is set off and usually a CM has to go fetch the guest. However, if one were to slip in the flume, it's not clear as to how deep it will be. The depth varies from place to place in the flume. Also, each log weighs in at 1 ton. During an evac, they are a CHORE to move, and quite scary, too.

And as far as logs sinking... I can only recall 2 instances that I've heard about. Guests jumping out... Daily. Splash breaking down... That's about every 2-3 days, sometimes more.

I get so sad hearing all the stories of people being killed or seriously injured at WDW. It's such as shame.

OK, Enough about Splash Mountain PLEASE!

I already heard about that when it happened. I started this thread because I was more interested in stories of people falling off rides like IASW or POC, or Maelstrom, ....or if someone WITNESSED someone falling in.

Im asking mainly out of curiousity, and because I have a faint memory from almost 2 decades ago about hearing a story of a kid falling out of the boat on IASW and the mom jumping in after him/her.

I was just curious because all these types of stories are always told to me by either the news, or someone new someone, who new a Cm, who had a friend, etc.etc.etc..... I was just curious about the boat rides because it would be pretty damn hard to stop a boat ride like you could HM or Spaceship Earth.....the boat would keep going, and what would happen to you? would you have to climb onto the set and go through a back exit, or would you have to get back in the boat ?

(for all you knit pickers, Yes, i know a CM would be there immediately)

This thread is intended for personal stories about something like this........

As of June 2006 there had been 15 deaths at WDW since 1989 and none of those were officially blamed on Disney, altho two of those were CM's and they were questioned at the time (Source)

About 10 years ago I came across a document that was a WestLaw search of injury and death lawsuits against Disney. Almost all of them were won by Disney.

In a few instances Disney was partially blamed for things like slow response to the emergency.. apparently this happened with a child who put their hand in the water at Pirates and lost a thumb when the boat bumped a metal guide in the water.

Deaths at DL are better documented online for some reason. Basically there were a few people who did very questionable things and paid with their lives. Standing up or trying to wiggle out of the restraint devices on roller coasters for example.

At DL, one castmember was crushed by the America Sings (formerly Carousel of Progress) attraction when the theatre rotated and she was caught between two walls, one moving and one stationary.

At WDW, an employee was killed prior to park opening, when the Skyway started up while the CM was cleaning the loading deck and he was scooped up for a period before falling some distance.

And at DL there was the Columbia ship accident where a guest was killed when a large metal thing that the boat was tied to broke free and hit the guest and his wife.

Most of the injuries or deaths at Disney can be attributed to : (in order)

1) Pre-existing health conditions : Heart problems or other undiagnosed conditions in children and adults alike can cause problems. And they do.

2) Guests Who Defeat Safety Mechanisms: Guests who do things they are advised NOT to do, sometimes get injured in the process.

3) VERY rarely.. something goes wrong. This happened once when a Big Thunder car separated from the rest of the train.. that kind of thing. This kind of operational failure is extremely rare.

While any death or injury is to be avoided, still, assuming an average of 10 to 12 million guests a year at MK alone from 1989 to 2006.. that's 204,000,000 guests.. and only 15 deaths.

That works out to a 0.0000000735294 % chance of death from any of the above causes while at WDW.

That's an enviable safety record by any standard.

They overloaded a boat with to much "weight" on Malestrom and it caused the boat to sink to the bottom of the track. filling it with water. it didn't totaly submerge but it couldn't move either.

OMG, when did this happen? Do you know what part of the ride it was???

My worst fear is falling in the water during the troll scene or the rig scene.....i 've always been freaked out by that

This thread is not inteded for injuries or deaths, just goofs of people who fell in, saw someone fall in, etc.

not interested in Statistics and stuff.

Yes, God forbid you should ask a question about falling in the water at a water ride and people start talking about a water ride.

I know you're "not interested in Statistics and stuff," but the point here is that when people fall in (and at Disney, it's pretty darn hard to accidentally fall in), they can quickly become statistics.

I don't think you should ask a question if you only want people to give you the answers you want instead of the answers you ask for. But maybe that's me; I get cranky after a long day.

Can I get an AMEN!?!?

Must have been filled with Americans. The most well padded people in the world :rotfl:

If you are dumb enough to "Guests Who Defeat Safety Mechanisms"
or " Guests who do things they are advised NOT to do" like standing up while a ride is moving or allowing your kid to stick his hand in the water, then i feel little to no sympathy for you when you get injured or killed. You just make things more difficult for the rest of us who are capable of following rules and still have fun.

However, if you are minding your own business working or having fun and some ride hurts or kills you I feel terribly sorry for you and your family.

Not totally thrilling, but my mom and I were getting on IASW once (in Disneyland), and there was absolutely no one on line. So it was just us in the boat. We obviously wanted to sit up front, but just as the boat started slowly moving, some CM started yelling, "No! Wait! Go to the middle!" We were stunned, but he (and two other CMs who ran over) literally made us stand up and tiptoe back to the middle WHILE the boat was moving. I was laughing the whole time, I think my mom was terrified. I assume they thought it would sink. How kind of them ;)

OMG! That is so scary!!!:scared1: I would have flipped out. I've never ridden maelstrom and I was gonna try for the 1st time next Saturday while I'm in Epcot before it goes under refurb. I'll still try it, but I'll probably be a little nervous. Thanks for letting me know.;)

Are you serious? Aren't all the boats on an underwater track? Where did you see this?:scared1:

One of the Jungle Cruise boats at WDW sank a year or so ago. Maintenance apparently forgot to check the bilge plug so while it is on a track the hull was filling with water throughout the day and finally just sank the poor thing. The skipper was new and evacuated the guest off the boat to the left, which was the island where the "natives are attacking". They had to send out a "rescue boat" and then figure out how to get the guests back into the boat from the island. Now if she had gotten them out to the right, they could have walked out of the ride into the boat storage area backstage.

As for "people" falling into the water, I have never seen a guest fall into the water, but I have seen my share of CM's take the plunge (which requires a tetnis shot... ). My favorite was at Jungle when the CM was coming back from break, she was a little late getting back and her boat was about to leave, she came running up on the dock, hit a slick of water (it had been raining) and slid right into the river between two boats. Funniest thing I have ever seen.

OK I am going to admit it I was so afraid of that drop - I saw those steps and thought about jumping off the ride too. Good thing I embarass easily. :rotfl2:

:rotfl: :rotfl: I wish I had the guts to jump off- I hate that ride! Yikes I can't believe the firework landed in his eye. :scared1:

I can't imagine being killed if I was hit by a car at that speed. I could see a bad bruise maybe.

I know a guy whose father was killed when his truck slipped into gear and moved forward (at "idle" speed), pinning him to a fencepost. When you're stuck between a heavy moving object and a stationary object, you're going to get squished.

I have a random question.....

Has anyone ever seen someone fall off one of the boat rides at WDW or DL?
I always think of this whenever Im on one of them, considering all the people that go through those parks every year, its got to have happened at some point.

If so, what happened?
