Expedition Everest Challenge May 5 @ 9:30 2012

Oh MY GOSH!!! THAT WAS AWEFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (my outside run in case your wondering) :scared::scared:

The temp was 13C which is about 55F and i thought for SURE i could do it but my lungs were bothering me AGAIN!!!! And i had a bit of a coughing fit about 20 minutes after my run :sad1: I'm still having to clear my throat now and cough occasionally and I finished my run an hour ago.

When I'm on the treadmill I can run through 3 songs without having to stop (I've even ran as long as 20 minutes at one point) but outside I can't run longer than one song?!?!? and by the end I can't even run the length of a song.

I cut the run short b/c I knew there was NO way I'd finish the 5K today and I was so dissapointed and thought for sure I would be lucky if I even hit the 2K mark so one good note is that when I mapped my run I was happy to see that I at least made it 3.1Km (1.92m) and my time was 26 minutes so it wasnt ALL that aweful after all BUT It felt like DEATH when my lungs were burning like that!!!

I really need to make a dr apt and tell her how this running is affecting my lungs. I wonder if a puffer would help me out at all? I used to have to use a puffer to get over colds b/c without it they would linger for months so I wonder if this would help to reduce the burning in my lungs.
Make yourself an appointment. You could have some reactive airways and an inhaler may help you if you take it before you run. I have similar issues if I run when it's cool out. Coughing spell after I run. I can usually get through the run, but after it hurts. Stubborn enough to not do anything about it as of yet. Have you been ill recently at all?

I had a cold in December and the problems lingered til sometime in January. I know that I have hyperactive airways but I havn't had problems with it or needed a puffer for my colds since oh YEARS ago. I was never an active person so that's why I never realized it might be a problem for running - i just knew it bothered me when i had a cold.
SIGH.... yes, we are all booking apts so we'll see what she says.

Everyone is doing so well with their training.
Y'all have me worried about the straggler dragger now though....
I did the Family Fiesta 5K in 58 minutes...better then the Kaiser which I did in 72 minutes....

GaRain, I completely agree about the times...I might be so slow that I open the park the next morning! :scared:

Seriously, though, all I've read from previous participants is that this is one of the more flexible races in terms of sweepers, since it is at night and they don't have to open for several hours.

Wow, that is scary. I'm glad you're getting checked out by a doctor. It is really impressive that you went as far as you did, in such a short time - that's a little over 13 minutes per mile. Perhaps you should go more slowly? :hug: I hope you feel better soon.

I just finished week 4 of the C2K program, running 4 minutes/walking 1 minute. I cannot tell you how amazed I am in myself that I can actually run for 4 minutes, and do it five times - still boggles my mind.

The problem is that, to make sure I'm running the entire interval, I'm keeping my pace really slow. This works to make me finish all of my intervals but I'm not seeing a huge improvement on my pace, which, at the fastest, was 18:49 per mile for 32 minutes. And, with that pace, I only go a little over a mile and a half. I can't imagine what I would do with a full 3 miles.

I think I've decided to stay at the 4:1 interval and work on endurance, up to 3 miles in the next couple of weeks. Then, I'll have two more weeks [ack!] to pick up some speed.

We'll see what happens. And, whatever happens, if I do become a victim of the slagger dragger, at least I actually got out there to run. I would have NEVER believed, a few months ago, that I would be doing something like this.

I am right there with you! Well, except that I'm two weeks behind, with the EEC being my "graduation" run at the end of week 9. But I can't believe I am actually running! And getting ready to do marathons!! Although, the thought of doing the Wine & Dine in November is still pretty scary. :scared1:

Let us know what the doc says!! Do you have asthma, by any chance? Not necessarily all the time, but perhaps because you had a respiratory infection earlier, it has been aggravated and bothering you now. It sounds like you might need an inhaler to help you finish up your recovery.

When I went to the allergist last week, she completely changed everything up on me. I was on Advair once a day, Albuterol as needed, and over the counter Allegra. Now I'm on Singular, Dulera, Albuterol, Nasonex and some other allergy med I can't pronounce. Yeah, it sounds like a lot, but after my scratch test, I was convinced that I need them. They pricked me with about 50 different things, and I had a strong reaction to 42 of them. Pretty much every tree, grass, weed and mold. But I'm okay with cockroaches - go figure. :sad2:

I'm feeling great and think I might be okay to run outside (just once per week!), but I'm staying in until she tells me I'm ready to go out. My next appointment is on 3/28, so hopefully she can see a big improvement and I can start training outdoors.

I am so right here with all of you! Yesterday was the first time I've jogged a complete mile in at least 25 years! I was able to get it done in 11:32. I smoked for over 30 years and never thought I would be here - thanks to Dsis for getting hooked on doing the 5K's :hug: - and we're so excited to be doing the EEC to celebrate her 1st anniversary as a non-smoker! :woohoo:

:hug:

I just love reading everyone's stories of success through and despite struggles. To be honest, I thought, at the 5K, I would just see folks who liked to run and be active, and just knew I would stick out like a sore thumb because all of this is not natural for me. It is so encouraging to read everyone's back story and I am so proud of all of us!

I so want to reach through the computer right now and hug you!! I am most definitely NOT an active person at all. I'm overweight with high blood pressure, so I NEVER would have EVER thought I would be signed up to run a 5K, let alone a 10 miler and 1/2 marathon later in the year!

To be completely honest, the thought of the other two still scare me quite a bit. Heck, I'm even scared about week 3 of the C25K, where I'm going to have to run for 3 minutes straight. :scared1: After I do my 2-ish miles each workout, I am exhausted and worn out. I can't imagine doing it 7 times in a row.

Honey, there's a lot of us here that are scared to death about not being able to finish. I think we should all hold hands and cross the finish line together!

Ordered some iron-ons this week for our race shirts.
Ooo, tell me more, please! I want to do something for our team name on the back of our shirts, but have no idea what to use. Making it extra challenging, it's got to work on stretchy tech-shirt material. Any thoughts?

My 11yo teammate is super excited for her first race too...I bought her a pair of running shoes for her b-day last week and she's already been "practicing" in them. Hopefully she follows my advice and "practices" regularly, or this is going to be interesting!
:thumbsup2 No worries - if my son was any indication, kids seem to miraculously turn it on come race day! Heck, I wish every day was a race day; it's like running with a sack of lead behind me during training runs. :rotfl2:

Oh MY GOSH!!! THAT WAS AWEFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:hug: I'm so sorry! Do see your doctor and ask about an inhaler. I've had bronchitis more times than I can count, plus exercise-induced asthma... Albuterol inhalers are the only thing allowing me to run at all for much of the year.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To all working on upping their pace - good work! :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2: I'm in awe of anyone who can run more than a couple minutes at a time.
As for me, I am now officially a Galloway fanatic. The man has got it right, at least for my body. Following his guidance, I switched my intervals from 1:00run/:30walk to 1:00run/1:00walk and, wonder of wonders, lowered my average pace per mile! It turns out that longer walk break means better recovery, which means I run faster during the run intervals. On top of it, I had no knee pain at all and ended a 3.3mi session with plenty of energy with that method. Think I'll keep it there for another week or two and then start increasing the run portion a little at a time. :thumbsup2
I've used both rhinestone and vinyl types of iron ons for several races...I just find them through online searches usually. They don't go onto tech material quite as easily as they do on 100% cotton, but it just takes a little longer and pressing a little harder with the iron, and it always adheres eventualy for me. For these one-time-only shirts, I use the Champion C9 brand sold at Target...they are comfy and cheap enough that I don't feel bad about buying them to wear only once. I like to pair it with a Team Sparkle skirt over my shorts just for fun...they are fun, sparkley and weighless! I should have the iron ons I ordered for this race in the next few days...I'll post a pic once I get the shirt complete...I'm wearing examples in all my pics below in my signature too, though it's hard to tell with all the race BLING in they way! :lmao:
Thanks and thanks to everyone for the encouragement. I don't have athsma but was given a puffer like 16 years ago due to hyperactive airways and having a hard time getting over colds. We'll see what my Dr. now has to say about it.
I DID get outside again - with DD thiis time and not even half way through our 3K (bc i know not to push it further than that right now at least outside) she says to me - "MOM!! Stop breathing like that - your just making it harder on yourself". Clearly she has never heard me gasping before :scared: b/c that's what I was doing!!! My lungs just can't handle the cooler air out there. I did do a tiny bit better this time than last time which shocked her b/c she thought i sounded aweful!!! lol.
I'm going to have to look more closely at this Galloway method. i've heard of LOTS of fans and with how badly I'm doing outside I think I could use a slow down so maybe pick it up in a week where i think i can manage and build from there.
I was doing 1:00run/1:00walk for a long time. When I switched to :30run/:30walk, my time improved from 16 min mile to a 14 min mile. I could run so much faster on my runs because they were shorter. But...I think that pace was giving me shin splints. I have slowed down some again and am doing stretches so hopefully will be able to get faster in the next few weeks.
Hee hee - I'm like a walking endorsement for C9! Literally everything in my workout wardrobe carries the C9 logo. :rotfl: Good to hear it'll work on those shirts - thanks! Think I'll see what our local craft store has on hand this weekend. Can't wait to see your outfits!
::yes:: Yep, I know that feeling exactly! The downside of it getting hot down here is that, well, it's hot! But the warm, humid air is soooo much easier on my lungs.
That's a HUGE time improvement! :cool1: But it really is a fine line, isn't it? I'm struggling to stop thinking about pace and focus on what's best for keeping my body healthy. I did 1:00/1:00 again last night and it went really, really well. I went 3 miles and just about the halfway mark felt terrific, so I did an extra :15 for each run, reducing the walks to :45... The first half was slower than I'd like because my son wasn't very energetic (and I figured it would be poor form to leave him behind on the golf course ;) ), so our total average pace wound up 13:26. Not the sub-12:00 I'd like to see, but I also still had enough in me to do another few miles, so there's definitely something to this method!
hahaha, you know it's pretty good stuff...especially for the price!
I got my iron on's in the mail last night...they are soooo cute! I'm planning a rest day today so I think I'll put my shirt together at least this evening. I'm having a very hard time finding a children's black sleevelss top for my teammate though...hopefully I'll find one soon for her...she may just have to go short-sleeved rather than sleeveless like mine because that's about all I can find in black.
Oh and I have a couple of tips for you that I've learned from doing all these iron ons...most of them come with directions that say to make sure you use a thin cloth between the iron and what you are ironing on...this is very important on these tech shirts especially! The material doesn't react well to direct heat against the iron! Also, if you're having a hard time getting something to adhere well, it can sometimes be helpful to turn the shirt inside out and iron (with the thin cloth) from the back side...especially with a rhinestone iron on...this will get the heat closer to the adhesive and pull it into the fabric better. And remember to give your piece a minute or two to cool and dry before checking for adhesion. Good luck!
All that you posted, ME TOO!!!!!!!! :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug:
This has already been such a helpful thread....who knows, I might have given up without it!
Kigerkat, I know what you mean about the longer races and intervals...but think how far you've already gone in such a short time. If you keep this up, you'll surprise yourself at how well you'll do.
I was looking at some races here at home. I'm thinking about participating in a 5K a couple of weeks before the EEC...might be good practice. Then there's this 4 miler in May, half-marathon in October, 10K in November....the possibilities are endless! Still thinking I would walk those longer distances, though.
Have I lost my mind?!?!?!?!?!?
So, this morning, I used my brand new interval timer [thanks Jeff Galloway!] and ran a 1:00/1:00 walk/run interval for 2.79 miles. This distance is a full mile longer than my longest walk/run and I managed to drop a minute per mile off my pace. :woohoo:
Not that the snails aren't still passing me, but they are having to work harder to do so. ;)
I'll have to keep this interval for a while, though, so I can get used to that distance....in the middle of that 'run', a minute seemed so much longer than it should have been. I can't imagine running 4 minute intervals for 3 miles. :scared1:
I agree! This thread has been very helpful and inspirational :) You guys are GREAT!!! You are all doing such great work and Im so proud of us all for keeping at it!!
what a celebration it will be when we cross that finish line hey??? :banana:
We need a meet-up at the party and take a group picture!
I agree!!! :goodvibes
What time would work though? Gotta make sure everyone has finished and it's hard to say how many waves there will be. Then as soon as we are done DD will want to get on EE for a few spins before she's ready to let me wander off for a pic. LOL
Start time 9:30. A wave sent off every 5 min from what I've heard so if there are 6 waves the last one will leave at 10pm
Anyone know how many waves there were last year?? I know it's full now so it will be maximum amount. Wonder if it sold out last year???
So for generosity sake let's say there are 10 waves...
Final wave runs at 10:20
give 50 min for run completion we are at 11:10 pm (gosh that's late!!)
give another 40 min for scavenger hunt we are at 11:50 pm (oi!! it's REALLY getting late!)
Give 20 min to grab a bite to eat and ride a ride we are at 12:10am
Awards announced at 12:30 so maybe it would be good to meet up just before the awards arre given?
When i went to check on the awards time I noticed that this portion looks to be worded differently AGAIN...
NEW in 2012! You will need to search for clues along your 5K Trek to help you solve the 5 Clues at the end before you can complete the 5th Adventure Expedition Everest Challenge. At the completion of the run, trekkers will return to the Butterfly Lot to complete their clues for the scavenger hunt. Remember those 5 clues along the way, they will help you reach the summit. After the clues have been solved they will reveal an answer that will lead trekkers to the party.
It almost sounds now like we won't even be going INTO the park to do anything with the clues. It says return to butterfly lot to COMPLETE clues.
Is that how your all reading it??
