I'm doing Galloway too and the only way I could pick up speed was to switch from 1 min/1 min to 30 sec/30 sec. But about the same time I did that I started running outside instead of on the treadmill and I think the pavement is too hard on my legs. I may end up walking a lot. My goal is just to finish though.![]()
i'm dreading outside running! I already find it hard on my treadmill and I've been at it since November!!! I'm like you - I just want to finish and be within the time requirement and that'll make me happy and proud of myself![]()
I'm trainng on the treadmill too my time has gone down from about 42 minutes to 34-35 minutes so it's getting better all the time.
Somedays are harder than others but I know that on the day with the atmosphere it'll help carry you along, my treadmill looks at a white wall as you can imagine not that inspiring lol. I picture the AK in my head and imagine running around it
AWWWWW!!! That's SO awesome of them to give you that. and I agree, that's a GREAT motivation to get well fast. Sending speedy recovery vibes your way! Thanks! I have to tell a story. If this helps, I trained for the Princess half last month solely on the treadmill. I only did one run outside, a 10k in November, 2 months after my training started.
For me, adrenaline made up for the fact that I didn't run outside. Every time I would try to run outside, I would make it a mile and feel like I was going to collapse! It really hurt my confidence in my running abilities. But, I felt great on race day and only started to get worn out at the overpasses near the end.
I would say if you can make one of your 30 minute runs at an incline each week, that will help you when it comes to any hills and hopefully your adrenaline will kick in and help you out! Mine did!
You can do it! Good luck!

I find that when I'm on the treadmill, I keep staring at the clock. I'm using a treadmill at a fitness center in my neighborhood, and there are televisions in there to distract me, but I found that if my mind is distracted that my feet also get distracted. Our treadmills face a window, so I get to watch cars coming and going. I couldn't imagine just staring at a blank wall!
I'm using the Get Moving and Nike + GPS apps on my iPhone, and I do love the constant updates on the GM app. You hear a "coach" update you on when you need to run, how much time is left to run, how many runs you have done and how many runs you have left to complete. The Nike + GPS app will track my distance (I'm surprised how close it is to the treadmill) and will calculate my average pace. Friday, my pace was 16 minutes, 15 seconds per mile!!I was super excited to be almost within the pacing limits!!
I'm curious if they allow you to use headphones during the event. I know this event is different because of the obstacles, but I would like to have the "coach" tell me when to run and when to walk. DH says that a lot of events don't allow coaching, and that would be considered coaching. And I know there will be a lot of people cheering and music playing, so I probably wouldn't hear it anyway. I'm just curious if it's allowed.
Thanks for telling me this b/c i'm pretty sure i'm going to feel so discouraged after running outsideAnd i will think about the incline thing but as of right now i couldn't even imagine getting through with an incline!!! lol
WOW!! Good for you - that's an amazing improvement!!! I started at 46 min in Nov and have it right around to the 41 min mark now but I can't seem to get any faster than that - I'm sure it has to do with my hyperactive airways b/c when i push myself my lungs just seem to want to explode!! That's why i'm afraid to add incline on the treadmill too. I think i can improve some day but it's going to take lots of time for my lungs to improve - my legs want to go faster but my lungs hold me back. I'm counting on the environment to give me extra motivation and energy tooI will talk to my dr this month too about my lungs and see what she has to say.
Yay, new shoes are ALWAYS exciting! FWIW, I got my new ones on Thurs. and ran my race Sunday in them and they were terrific - I know that's like a cardinal sin in running, but I'm so glad I broke that rule47 days to go
and I bought some new runners finally! YAY!!!
I know - not all that exciting really but i've needed a new pair for running the Expedition Everest 5K challenge b/c my old running shoes are 2 - 3 years old now and I knew I'd need time to get them worn in b/c it's NOT a good idea to run a race in brand new shoes so it's a relief to FINALLY have this taken care of.
I'll join in! Have to wait until later to catch up, but I took a quick peek at your new shoes - nice! Funny, I wound up in Asics, too - Gel Phoenix 4. Looove them!Oh well, If you'd like to see them (mine aren't all that exciting but DD14's are pretty darn cool i must say!) then have a look at my pre trip report at this link.

I do the same - I need my Runkeeper coach and music, but don't want to miss an announcement or passing runner's signal.I run with headphones (have ran 5 disney races with them- including everest) but typically only keep it in 1 ear or keep the volume lower (loud enough to hear but not loud enough it blocks out outside noise) to hear announcements (typically 'course narrows' or 'speed bumps ahead') and other runners/spectators (cause thats half the fun!)

You know, I find that I don't have any troublesome "break in" period in my shoes either. (I wear the Asics Cumulus) I think they feel the absolute best to me straight from the box before they are broken inI wore a new pair for the Tinker Bell half this year...they only had about 10 miles on them at the time of the race...and they were fine. No blisters, no pain and I even got a PR! I know everyone says "don't do it!" but I think you just have to know how your body reacts and know the shoes...I'm on like the 4th or 5th pair of the same shoe, so I was pretty certain I wasn't going to have any problems.

Yes - I read that headphones are discouraged but not banned.
Shin splints are what is holding me back - my legs kill me when I push too hard.
Someone just told me that you should run at an incline of 1 on the treadmill and that will help you transition better to the road. Not sure if that is valid or not, but I think I could probably do that incline OK.
I think I'm most scared of it being hot. It's cold here when I run outside - and inside the heat is set to 18 degrees Celsius - so it might very well be warmer than that.
