Expedition Everest Challenge May 5 @ 9:30 2012

I'm right there with all the 1st time 5k'ers and runners!

Much luck to you and wishes for a quick recovery!
Thanks! I have to tell a story. I came out of surgery, woke up enough for family to come in, and they brought me a gift! A yeti! What a great motivating gift to get well! Love them kiddos!

What a fun gift to wake up to!! I hope you have a fast recovery!!

I'm doing Galloway too and the only way I could pick up speed was to switch from 1 min/1 min to 30 sec/30 sec. But about the same time I did that I started running outside instead of on the treadmill and I think the pavement is too hard on my legs. I may end up walking a lot. My goal is just to finish though. :)

i'm dreading outside running! I already find it hard on my treadmill and I've been at it since November!!! I'm like you - I just want to finish and be within the time requirement and that'll make me happy and proud of myself :goodvibes

If this helps, I trained for the Princess half last month solely on the treadmill. I only did one run outside, a 10k in November, 2 months after my training started.

For me, adrenaline made up for the fact that I didn't run outside. Every time I would try to run outside, I would make it a mile and feel like I was going to collapse! It really hurt my confidence in my running abilities. But, I felt great on race day and only started to get worn out at the overpasses near the end.

I would say if you can make one of your 30 minute runs at an incline each week, that will help you when it comes to any hills and hopefully your adrenaline will kick in and help you out! Mine did!

You can do it! Good luck!

I'm trainng on the treadmill too my time has gone down from about 42 minutes to 34-35 minutes so it's getting better all the time.

Somedays are harder than others but I know that on the day with the atmosphere it'll help carry you along, my treadmill looks at a white wall as you can imagine not that inspiring lol. I picture the AK in my head and imagine running around it

I find that when I'm on the treadmill, I keep staring at the clock. I'm using a treadmill at a fitness center in my neighborhood, and there are televisions in there to distract me, but I found that if my mind is distracted that my feet also get distracted. :scared: Our treadmills face a window, so I get to watch cars coming and going. I couldn't imagine just staring at a blank wall!

I'm using the Get Moving and Nike + GPS apps on my iPhone, and I do love the constant updates on the GM app. You hear a "coach" update you on when you need to run, how much time is left to run, how many runs you have done and how many runs you have left to complete. The Nike + GPS app will track my distance (I'm surprised how close it is to the treadmill) and will calculate my average pace. Friday, my pace was 16 minutes, 15 seconds per mile!!:banana::banana: I was super excited to be almost within the pacing limits!!

I'm curious if they allow you to use headphones during the event. I know this event is different because of the obstacles, but I would like to have the "coach" tell me when to run and when to walk. DH says that a lot of events don't allow coaching, and that would be considered coaching. And I know there will be a lot of people cheering and music playing, so I probably wouldn't hear it anyway. I'm just curious if it's allowed.

AWWWWW!!! That's SO awesome of them to give you that. and I agree, that's a GREAT motivation to get well fast. Sending speedy recovery vibes your way!

Thanks for telling me this b/c i'm pretty sure i'm going to feel so discouraged after running outside :sad1: And i will think about the incline thing but as of right now i couldn't even imagine getting through with an incline!!! lol

WOW!! Good for you - that's an amazing improvement!!! I started at 46 min in Nov and have it right around to the 41 min mark now but I can't seem to get any faster than that - I'm sure it has to do with my hyperactive airways b/c when i push myself my lungs just seem to want to explode!! That's why i'm afraid to add incline on the treadmill too. I think i can improve some day but it's going to take lots of time for my lungs to improve - my legs want to go faster but my lungs hold me back. I'm counting on the environment to give me extra motivation and energy too :) I will talk to my dr this month too about my lungs and see what she has to say.

I'm like you and if I try to watch tv and get distracted my feet want to get distracted too OR my brain can't function b/c it's telling me to sit down and relax b/c that's what i do when i watch tv!!! Too much for me - i'm better off listening to music or like you said a coach.
Unfortunately i'm pretty sure i read that your not aloud to plug anything into your ears. They want your full attention - i guess there are safety messages and music along the way so it's a safety issue if you can't hear the messages.

I run with headphones (have ran 5 disney races with them- including everest) but typically only keep it in 1 ear or keep the volume lower (loud enough to hear but not loud enough it blocks out outside noise) to hear announcements (typically 'course narrows' or 'speed bumps ahead') and other runners/spectators (cause thats half the fun!)

They don't forbid it just discourage it as they don't want someone to have it so loud they ignore the warnings and crash...

I can NOT wait for my new shoes to get here so I can start training again (coming off my 2 week post princess rest.. Getting anxious to start running again!)

No need for incline then! :) I was able to do the Princess without any incline and I made it. So if you do end up running outside, don't be discouraged! You will be able to cross the finish line!

Yes - I read that headphones are discouraged but not banned.
Shin splints are what is holding me back - my legs kill me when I push too hard.
Someone just told me that you should run at an incline of 1 on the treadmill and that will help you transition better to the road. Not sure if that is valid or not, but I think I could probably do that incline OK.
I think I'm most scared of it being hot. It's cold here when I run outside - and inside the heat is set to 18 degrees Celsius - so it might very well be warmer than that.

Thank you. I struggled with breathing for a while too (it's also way I don't run outside) but on my white wall view (lol) there's a small black spot when I start to find it difficult or my breathing is all over the place I focus on this spot and really concentrate on steady breathe in, breathe out. It seems to really help.
I'm really excited for this event it seems so much more fun than just a run, environment will definitely be a helping getting me over the line lol

Here's what is on my white wall...

47 days to go
and I bought some new runners finally! YAY!!!
I know - not all that exciting really but i've needed a new pair for running the Expedition Everest 5K challenge b/c my old running shoes are 2 - 3 years old now and I knew I'd need time to get them worn in b/c it's NOT a good idea to run a race in brand new shoes so it's a relief to FINALLY have this taken care of.
Yay, new shoes are ALWAYS exciting! FWIW, I got my new ones on Thurs. and ran my race Sunday in them and they were terrific - I know that's like a cardinal sin in running, but I'm so glad I broke that rule :thumbsup2

Oh well, If you'd like to see them (mine aren't all that exciting but DD14's are pretty darn cool i must say!) then have a look at my pre trip report at this link.

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2853212

It's on page 9. oh and please say hello. (is there a begging character?? lol)
I'll join in! Have to wait until later to catch up, but I took a quick peek at your new shoes - nice! Funny, I wound up in Asics, too - Gel Phoenix 4. Looove them!

Thanks! I have to tell a story. I came out of surgery, woke up enough for family to come in, and they brought me a gift! A yeti! What a great motivating gift to get well! Love them kiddos!
:goodvibes What a great gift!

I do the same - I need my Runkeeper coach and music, but don't want to miss an announcement or passing runner's signal.

I updated my blog (link in signature) with my 5K race recap from yesterday, but the short version is this: I ran, I finished, and I wasn't last! Knee was fine, shoes were fantastic and the race itself was a lot of fun. Chip time: 37:40. I'll take it!

You know, I find that I don't have any troublesome "break in" period in my shoes either. (I wear the Asics Cumulus) I think they feel the absolute best to me straight from the box before they are broken in :) I wore a new pair for the Tinker Bell half this year...they only had about 10 miles on them at the time of the race...and they were fine. No blisters, no pain and I even got a PR! I know everyone says "don't do it!" but I think you just have to know how your body reacts and know the shoes...I'm on like the 4th or 5th pair of the same shoe, so I was pretty certain I wasn't going to have any problems.

:thumbsup2 Come to think of it, the handful of running shoes that've been my absolute favorites all had that in common: perfect-feeling, straight out of the box. All different brands, from some 700-series New Balance's, to my Mizuno Wave Nexus's, to the new Asics, but with each pair I loved them immediately. That needs to be a lesson for me from now on. ::yes::

Putting the treadmill at an incline is supposed to help compensate for the lack of wind resistance indoors.

My DH works in fitness and has been to some Cooper's Institute training classes, and he has always told me shoes don't need to be worn in. Up until I met him, I always thought I had to have my shoes for a couple months before I wore them in race, but I eventually learned otherwise. :confused3 But, like you said, you have to know your body and shoes. If you buy a pair that's not right for your feet, I don't think any amount of "wearing in" is going to help. :wizard:

Everest is SOLD OUT!

Should be a great run :)

Wow!!! I remember looking at the site a few days ago and seeing that it was 85% full. Filled up fast!:thumbsup2

wow! it's full?!?! That's cool :) Feel bad for those that would want to join last minute though.

I ran with my new runners and it was GREAT!!! I didn't get the sore spot by my big toe like I usually get and i had absolutely NO aches the next day even though i went more than 3 days between runs (that usually means some stiffness for me). So I'm totally happy with my Asics!!!

Only problem now though is that I word DH's big clunky rubber boots to help my DD with flyers today and really cut up my ankle bones from the boots rubbing :sad1: I wanted to do a run today so i think I'll still try. I have band aides on them right now but I'm thinking I'll put some moleskin on TOP of the bandaides to avoid any friction from the shoes.

Wish me luck!! At least I was just going to do a smaller run today.

:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana: Woo-Hoo!! :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:

According to my Nike + GPS app, my average pace today was 15 minutes and 59 seconds per mile!! I'm in the pacing limit, and I'm only in week two of the C25K!! This is so reassuring for me, since I was worried in the beginning about the pacing limit and getting picked up by the "Draggin' Wagon."
