Expedition Everest Challenge May 5 @ 9:30 2012

Yes, I noticed the wording last time I checked it too. I can't remember to buy stuff on my list at the grocery store. And it's written down! How the heck are we supposed to remember stuff while we're running? I suppose everyone will be in the same boat, so we'll all become very good friends in the parking lot. ;)

I'm up for a group picture, but my DD and I won't be sticking around for very long after we receive our medals. She'll be exhausted and she's not a thrill ride girl either. So that eliminates much of the after-party for us! Perhaps we could have a meeting place, and then a staggering of photos for early birds and night owls? Just a thought. (and why are both phrases referenced to birds?) :rotfl:

I am up for a group picture - but I am a slowbie!
I do plan to take a camera with me - hopefully will help with those clues.

Interesting wording - and if you take a look at the map of the 5K route - some of the clue areas are not on the route (ie: Camp Minnie Mickey). So, would that be an extension of the 5K, making it more like a 6K? Or would we go around again? Hmmmmmmm:confused3

Hello, neighbor! :wave2: What part of Atlanta are you in?

::yes:: :rotfl: And heck, I have no shame - I'll post pics of the clues and ask for help from the Twitterverse, lol!

Same here. The latest my DS's been out was 11:30pm for MNSSHP... I doubt we'll stick around for more than a ride on EE and Dinosaur afterward. But I'm up for a gathering/pic if we're able!

Good question. My original thought was that we'd go around twice, once running the 5K, and again to do clues, but that would push things soooo late! Now I'm thinking the map is maybe a little off and the clues are off the course, but within sight while running??? :confused:

So, this morning, I used my brand new interval timer [thanks Jeff Galloway!] and ran a 1:00/1:00 walk/run interval for 2.79 miles. This distance is a full mile longer than my longest walk/run and I managed to drop a minute per mile off my pace. :woohoo:
That's fantastic! :banana:
I can't imagine running 4 minute intervals for 3 miles. :scared1:
Me neither! And yet... a couple months ago, I couldn't fathom ever being able to run for a full minute, and here I am doing 1:00/1:00 and a few 1:15/:45 intervals each run. :)

Just popping to say that I'm all about a group picture. But I don't know enough about logistics to make a suggestion....just tell me when and where. I'm a EE junkie so will be there until they kick me out.

Princess V, thank you for your kind words. And I love your blog! You are such a fun writer and you've inspired me to look into buying some compression sleeves [although I had told myself that I had bought enough workout stuff already!].

Hi! I am registered to run with my husband. It is my first time doing EE and I am so excited. It will be my husband's first 5K.

Good luck to everyone!

Michele :goodvibes

My friends and I signed up for this race, Yay!! it will be the first time we've done Everest and we are kind of nervous, but it looks like a lot of fun.

I am OTP!
(Kinda near Decatur)

I'm up in the Buford/MOG area. Howdy!!

There was a neat 5K in our area a few weeks ago that I can see DH and I doing next year:

http://runforyourlives.com/locations/atlanta-georgia/

DH and I are big fans of the show, and this seemed like such a fun idea!

OK...update: Today totally sucked! I ventured outside, because I was starting week 3 of the C25K, and I knew I was going to have to run for 3 minutes. Big mistake. Not because of my horrendous allergies (pollen count was over 9000 yesterday, almost 6000 today), but because of my ankle.

I have noticed a couple of times after doing my workout that my right ankle hurt a little bit. I never thought anything of it, since stretching would help and the pain would be gone the next day. But OMG, not today.

I ran the roads in my neighborhood (which is VERY hilly), and I nearly died on one of the big ones. It was time for me to run, and I thought, "British lady in my headphones, you have got to be kidding me!" It was on one of the biggest hills in the neighborhood. That hill seemed much steeper today than I recall, and my legs felt it. I walked up the hill and when I got to the top, my ankle was killing me. I thought that if I stopped to stretch a bit and walk around a nearby park once, it would work itself out and I would be good to go.

Nope. I almost stopped at one of my friend's house to ask for a ride home, but I stuck it out and limped back home. :sad1:

When I got home, I could hardly even stretch. Nothing could take the pain away from my ankle. So, I didn't get a very good stretch in at the end. I ended up icing my ankle and decided to only run on flat/semi-flat surfaces in the future. I guess it's back to the treadmill for me!

I'm thinking I must be doing something weird when I run - like how my feet are hitting the ground. I need to find one of my local runner friends and have them watch me to give me some pointers/advice. In the meantime, I might need to go visit the sports medicine doc DH went to last week for his knee.

I have no doubt that I would be fine with the 5K. I'm positive that I could walk/powerwalk the 5K and be fine. I'm just worried about the bigger runs we have planned at the end of the year.

I thought about doing runforyourlives - but nah....
I am doing the SPCA run/walk this Saturday in Suwanee...

Well, I think a pic would just be SOOO cool so I'll figure out how to get to the spot at whatever time no matter what. You'll all forgive me if I forget who you are though b/c I'm AWEFUL with names and to remember code names and transfer it to real names will mess me up so badly. You might have to say something to remind me who you are. LOL. Like "I'm the one with the blog who told you about the compression sleeve thingies ;) LOL. I'm sure we'll be able to select a more accurate time closer to the race. If we knew how many waves it would be SO much simpler i think.

I'm so sorry your run sucked :( Maybe you should have stopped and had a friend drive you home. Now it may take longer to get over it :( I hope your back up and running very soon!!!
Do you buy runners according to what type of foot you have? Maybe look at this site - it has lots of info and helped me figure out which shoes to buy. I am an overpronator so I had to get a shoe that helps to stabilize my foot - it will help avoid problems b/c of the way my feet move when I run. Here's the link...

http://www.runnersworld.com/shoeadvisor

anyway, in the meantime - ice up and rest that ankle. There's still time to get back out there once you've given it a rest to heal. Hopefully it's a shoe issue and it can easily be corrected.

OH!!!! and I see a few more newbies - WELCOME :) Glad you joined us!!!

Has anyone received any email updates for this race? I wasn't sure if they were sending them out periodically the way they do for the halfs. For some reason, the last race I ran (Tink) I never got any of the email updates that went out other than my registration receipt as soon as I signed up...so just wondering if anything had gone out for this one. I guess we should be getting an email to download waivers in the next week or two though! :cheer2:

:rotfl2: Yeah, I've told myself that very same thing... it hasn't worked very well. :rolleyes1 Oh, and I may or may not be wearing my compression sleeves right now, under my suit pants. :teeth:

Thank you so much - I really appreciate feedback! :goodvibes I'm a writer by trade, but what I do all day is business-focused and, if I'm being honest, pretty much a snooze-fest. Writing outside of work keeps my creativity flowing.

:cheer2: I think you guys will have a blast!

:yay: It sounds like there'll be a lot of us first-time Everesters!

I'm so sorry your run sucked! :hug: I had friends living in the ATL and I visited often; I tried running up there once and thought I might die, too. Those hills are steeper than they look!

Say it with me now, Ice, Ice Baby. ::yes:: And definitely see if a different type of shoe is needed. I keep reading not to stretch, that it does more harm than good for runners. That said, as a former ballerina and present-day yoga devotee, I pay no attention to that advice. :rolleyes:

Has anyone received any email updates for this race?
Nope, nothing yet. I didn't get our waiver emails for Tangled until a few days before the race! Luckily I'm a DISer and saw the link here to go get it myself, all stealthy-like. :cool2:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Right. So I went for a run last night after work, around 5:30. I was scheduled for some speed work. It was still hovering near 90-degrees, full sun and getting humid before rain moved in later in the evening. I won't mince words: it SUCKED. Hot, hot, hot. Had I stuck to our shady subdivision streets, it might not have been so bad, but I decided to run down two major roadways. You know, at rush hour? When heat from 8 lanes of asphalt and endless streams of running vehicles added to the unshaded sun? Gah! I'm going to have to either get up earlier (fat chance - I'm already up at 5:30am!) or run later as we head into summer. :scared:
I just got an email! CREEPY! :laughing:
I just got an email! CREEPY! :laughing:
Me to!!! :scared1::rotfl2:
Um, I'm completely perplexed by the clue it contains. This does not bode well, lol!
Anyone?
ETA: LOL, I showed it to my boss and she got it - she'll be my lifeline! Take the letter number shown for each color:
1st letter of black = B
3rd letter of green = E
2nd letter of blue = L
3rd letter of orange = A
1st letter of yellow = Y
BELAY. Yeah, I still wouldn't have thought that was it, except that my boss explained it's a climbing term. I'll be brushing up on climbing lingo ASAP. ;)
oh no :( what about later runs?? Then you'd really be used to a 9:30 start time for the race. LOL but I agree - there is NO way on earth I would wake up early to run either :scared1:
I just got an email! CREEPY! :laughing:
yep!! I JUST got mine too and headed right here b/c um.... I don't get the clue :confused3 I only glanced at it briefly - got freaked out and headed right here. I'm going to go look at it again a little more carefully and see if I can figure it out. I'm hoping when DD looks at it later today she'll get it instantly b/c I'm depending on her brain power ;) LOL
