Early flight-what do you bring for breakfast?

I used to do the muffins/pop tart thing but as I've gotten older  that sugar rush in the morning doesn't make me feel too well so now I've had to change my strategy and it is a little harder bringing along food that will travel well. We have a two hour drive to the airport and they want you there two hours early for a 6:30 a.m. flight so it's hard to think of making much at 1:30 in the morning. I'll hard boil some eggs the night before (if they have been in the refrigerator they will last for hours), or take some almonds and fruit, or some protein bars, maybe some string cheese and cheese curds (what do your expect from a "cheese head"). Can't think of anything else right now, although I know I have brought other stuff along. Hope these suggestions help.
There is no need to be at the airport at 4:30am in the morning. If my flight departed at 7am I would be at the airport no early than 5:45am. Check in online the night before. Checking bags that early in the morning should be a breeze.

Also since you have quite a drive to the airport, pack a small cooler to keep your breakfast at the proper temp. Remove breakfast from cooler upon arrival and leave cooler in car and all should be fine. Other good options are string cheese. Also think outside the box. I make ham and cheese rollups and put in a ziploc bag. Ask for a glass of milk from the drink cart and instant breakfast.

That is a very busy time of the morning. I would check to see what time the ticket counter at your airport opens and be there at that time.

I know here in Orlando the security line doesn't open until 5 AM and there are always long lines. You don't want to miss your flight.

I would also pick up milk once you are through security. Not all airlines have small containers of milk to pass out.

I think the OP needs to tell what day of the week, airport and airline she is flying out of to determine how early to be at the airport, otherwise we are all just making guesses. If I understand correctly the 7am flight is out of her hometown airport, not MCO.

Drink choices on board the aircraft vary by airline but on morning flights I have always had a minimum choice or juice or coffee. Milk was either offered from a larger half gallon container or in small boxes, just like the juice service.

Another "think outside the box" breakfast is left over pizza wrapped in tin foil. High in protein and calcium and fairly filling. We always called cold pizza for breakfast "Italian cheese toast."

WOW! You're lucky! Depending on our airline, if we should up at Lambert airport (St Louis) that late, we'd never make it through security and to the gate in time! Yes, even that early in the am!!

Op...sounds like you have some yummy suggestions for breakfast! I now have some new ones myself!!! Have a great trip! :goodvibes

We have flown at this time of the morning, and sometimes earlier quite a few times (for other destinations) and have followed the advice of the airlines of getting there two hours early every time. A few times we had about an hour to kill. But there were a few times when we had about fifteen minutes to hit the restrooms and then wait to board the plane. It's amazing that the security lines and luggage check-in areas can be a zoo at that time of the morning. We had to arrive at 3:30 a.m. once and it was still swarming with people. Never a down time anymore I guess. Years ago at O'Hare it used to be dead in the wee hours of the morning and you couldn't even get a cab if you arrived at the time of "night" - now there are people everywhere. Oh well - it beats wasting our vacation time driving in a car - I'd rather spend it with Mickey. Even if I have to eat cheese for breakfast. :lmao: Thanks for all the good suggestions for food choices, I think I will have to try some of them.

It is all a matter of knowing your airport. I regularly fly out of DCA which is regularly shown on TV as a "busy" airport but I have never waited more than 10 minutes on a Monday morning to clear security. Monday mornings are historically the busiest travel times since this is when most biz travelers are flying. I fly EVERY week for work on a 7:20am flight and can leave my apartment at 6AM, drop my bag (with $2 tip) at the skycap, walk thru security and still find time to pick up a coffee and bagel to bring on the plane past security.

I have to thank you for posting this recipe. I made these for my son and he has a new favorite food and something healthy he can reheat before school. I have to admit I only did the muffin ones one time and now I just do whole pies because my son eats it as a snack as well. Everyone who's tried them loves it. It's nice that you can put whatever filling you want as well. :woohoo:

I have a special breakfast recipe that I make the night before we leave for vacation. We always have an early flight as well so it is nice to have a good breakfast.

Mini Breakfast Quiches

-Spray muffin tin w/cooking spray
-Take refridgerated pie crusts & cut into 3 in circles w/top of a glass
-Press into muffin tin
-Put some shredded cheese and chopped ham on the crusts
-Beat 7 eggs with 2/3 c. milk
-Spoon egg mixture over ham & cheese to within 1/2 in of the top
-Bake in a 400 degree preheated oven for 20 min or until golden brown
-Pop out w/fork

I usually bring fruit along too and we grab milk or OJ at the airport

I think that depends on where you live. If I tried that at JFK or LGA, I'd miss the flight.:lmao:

Does the airport/TSA have restrictions on food items....or is it only liquids? I'd hate to go to all this trouble and have them take it away from us, lol.

I was thinking of prepackaged stuff like Muffins and such, but hate the idea of all that sugar and then having to sit still. If TSA allows food (non-liquid) I'll probably bring us some fruit and cheese.....healthier and enough fiber and protein to keep us going for a little while.

I am in the process of looking at airlines now...and Jet Blue says to bring along your own lunch......so now I have to think of that too! It's a 5 hour flight plus whatever layover.....maybe I should work harder to find a flight that DOES have a layover so we can eat in the airport. I have been looking for non-stops to make the time we have to sit shorter.

There are only restrictions on liquids, so items such as yogurt, cottage cheese, etc are out. I would go the snack route if it were me and just snack your way to Disney. Even with a layover there is no guarantee that you will have time due to late outbound flights for a lunch. Think of grab and go foods.

Trail Mix
Nuts (Almonds, Pecans, Walnuts)
String Cheese
Raisins
Apples
Bananas
Fruit Rollups
Granola Bars
Pretzels
Crackers
Protein bars (Luna, Cliff)
Bagels
Turkey Jerkey

If you are going to be on the plane a while, you might want to freeze a sandwich the night before and by the time you are hungry for lunch it should be defrosted. I would think heartier breads that would withstand a mushing in a bag such as bagels, hard rolls, french bread. Avoid the super soft white bread.

With four kids, we stop at Dunkin Donuts on the way since it opens at 5AM

We have an hour ride to the airport, so I always get the individual cartons of OJ, and some mini-muffins/donuts for the ride, (We leave at 4am).

When the kids see those go into the grocery cart, That is our official "we're going to Disney" indicator.:yay:

I think that the quiches are a great idea, I think I might hardboil some eggs & freeze some uncrustables too.

You are so welcome! The muffin version is more portable, but thats a good idea to make a whole pie for eating at home !
